RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There are several international guidelines for foetal anomalies scanning at 11-14 weeks' gestation. The aim of this study is to present our first-trimester specialist neurosonography protocol with examples of pathology in order to develop a systematic approach to evaluating the first-trimester foetal brain. METHODS: Women undergoing a first-trimester foetal medicine ultrasound scan between 2010 and 2020 for multiple indications underwent neurosonography according to a set protocol. 3D transvaginal brain examination was performed in all cases (2000 pregnancies scanned). We retrospectively reviewed all imaging to develop this protocol. RESULTS: We propose that the following five axial-plane parallel views should be obtained when performing neurosonography in the first trimester, moving from cranial to caudal: 1. Lateral ventricles; 2. Third ventricle; 3. Thalamus and mesencephalon; 4. Cerebellum; 5. Fourth ventricle. Examples of these images and abnormalities that can be seen in each plane are given. CONCLUSIONS: We have presented a specialist protocol for systematically assessing the foetal brain in the first trimester and given examples of pathology which may be seen in each plane. Further work is needed to prospectively assess detection rates of major abnormalities using this protocol and assess the reproducibility and learning curve of this technique.

This article suggests a way in which specialists scanning babies at 1114 weeks of pregnancy can check the brain in a structured way. This involves looking at the brain at five levels or planes to view the developing structures. The suggested scan protocol is similar to images produced of the brain and heart at the second trimester (20 week) scan. We hope that specialists will find it useful to check the brain in this way if there are concerns raised at the dating (12 week) scan, and that this will lead to earlier detection of brain abnormalities or differences.

RESUMO

Subtle but demonstrable movements in the expectant mother's pelvis occur during vaginal delivery in all the pelvic joints and anatomical planes of the body (sagittal, frontal, and transverse). The purpose of these movements is to gradually expand the space in the lesser pelvis via widening of the individual pelvic planes so that the newborn's head can enter the pelvic inlet, safely pass through the narrow planes of the pelvis, and through the pelvic outlet. From the point of view of biomechanics, these movements are described in literature as counternutation and nutation of the sacrum and iliac bone. The counternutation of the sacrum helps to expand the plane of the pelvic inlet. The nutation of the sacrum assists in expanding the plane of the pelvic width, height, and outlet. These physiological movements are affected by the body constitution, the state of the myofascial and skeletal systems of the mother, and furthermore, by hormonal disjunction of the connections in the expectant mother's pelvis together with the progress of the delivery mechanism itself. The main factor that determines the range of movement in the individual joints, and therefore adequate expansion of the individual pelvic planes, is the position of the mother during delivery. Engagement of active movements of the mother together with application of passive stretching of the soft tissues in the lower lumbar area and in the hip joints are both needed for maximum expansion of the individual pelvic planes and utilization of the maximum useful capacity of the mother's pelvis during delivery. These movements help invoke the abduction forces on muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the pelvis that lead to the optimum setting of the joints during which delivery movements happen. The specific movements in the pelvic joints predetermine whether nutation or counternutation is possible, and therefore if the newborn's head can progress to the pelvic inlet or pass through the narrow and wide pelvic planes, and the pelvic outlet. The knowledge of these biomechanical principles and movements in the pelvis during delivery enables obstetricians and midwives to understand how the movements in the hip joints of the expectant mother can positively impact the spatial ratios in the lesser pelvis, and how to support further progress in the event of non-progressive labour.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of the present research was to assess the mesiodistal angulation of the maxillary anterior teeth utilizing Image J computer software, a Profile projector, and a Custom-made jig. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 34 subjects (17 males and 17 females) were chosen from a group of 18-30 years old with bilateral Angle Class I molars and canine relationships. One manual approach (Custom-made jig) and two digital methods (J computer software, a Profile projector) were used to record the mesiodistal angulation in incisal view. The individuals had alginate impressions made, and a facebow was used to capture the maxilla's spatial relationship with the cranium. The articulated cast with the help of mounting ring moved to the specially customized jig, then the angulations was measured in the incisal view after the casts were placed in a semi-adjustable articulator. Data were recorded and statistically analyzed. RESULTS: The mesiodistal angulation in the incisal view via three methods between the 17 males and 17 females has statistically significant different. Although the mesiodistal angulation for maxillary lateral incisor and canine did not show any statistically significant difference, the maximum and minimum values obtained were always greater in males in comparison with the females. This indicates that the positions of six maxillary anterior teeth in the males resulted in the creation of upward sweep of incisal edges of central and lateral incisors which was also referred to as "smiling line" producing masculine surface anatomy more squared and vigorous while feminine surface anatomy being more rounded, soft, and pleasant. There was no statistically significant difference between the right and left sides, indicating bilateral arch symmetry and the symmetrical place of the right teeth compared with the left side's corresponding teeth. CONCLUSION: On conclusion, according to the current study's findings, all three approaches can measure the mesiodistal angulations of maxillary anterior teeth in incisal view with clinically acceptable accuracy. The digital methods, which included using the Image J computer software and the profile projector, achieved more accurate results than the manual method. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The outcomes of this study's mesiodistal angulations can be used as a reference for placing teeth in both fully and partially edentulous conditions. This study contributes to a better understanding of the importance of achieving the ideal occlusion in the Indian population by placing the maxillary anterior teeth at the proper mesiodistal angulation. RESUMO

Background: The lumbar plexus (LP) is a group of nerves located at the fourth lumbar vertebra level, between the anterior two-thirds and posterior one-thirds of the psoas muscle. In this study, the researchers aimed to investigate the spread of latex in injections of LP, suprainguinal fascia iliaca, and circum-psoas planes to assess the different regional techniques for blocking LP nerves (LPNs). Methods: The study involved performing ultrasound-guided injections of three different colored latexes in six cadavers. The researchers observed and compared the spread of latex in each plane by taking cross sections at the levels of L4, anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS), and sacral foramina (SF). The spread of latex and LPN staining was documented and analyzed through photography. Results: The results showed that the latex spread within the psoas muscle and fascia iliaca plane (FIP) during LP injections, whereas suprainguinal fascia iliaca injections showed latex dissemination in the FIP at both ASIS and SF levels. On the other hand, circum-psoas injections spread beneath the iliopsoas fascia at both levels and medially toward the external iliac vessels. Despite this spread, there was no communication between the three planes, and there was no mixing of latex from the different injections at any level. Conclusion: There are distinct fascial planes, for the three approaches, with no communication between them. While latex diffused from LP plane to FIP, no mixing of dye was observed and also the reverse could not be achieved. These findings suggest that different regional techniques for blocking LPNs have their unique planes of action.

RESUMO

The electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline electrolyte of hexagonal spinel Co3 O4 nanoparticles derived using scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) is correlated with scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images of the droplet landing sites. A unique way to deconvolute the intrinsic catalytic activity of individual crystal facets of the hexagonal Co3 O4 spinel particle is demonstrated in terms of the turnover frequency (TOF) of surface Co atoms. The top surface exposing 111 crystal planes displayed a thickness-dependent TOF with a TOF of about 100 s-1 at a potential of 1.8 V vs. RHE and a particle thickness of 100 nm. The edge of the particle exposing (110) planes, however, showed an average TOF of 270±68 s-1 at 1.8 V vs. RHE and no correlation with particle thickness. The higher atomic density of Co atoms on the edge surface (2.5 times of the top) renders the overall catalytic activity of the edge planes significantly higher than that of the top planes. The use of a free-diffusing Os complex in the alkaline electrolyte revealed the low electrical conductivity through individual particles, which explains the thickness-dependent TOF of the top planes and could be a reason for the low activity of the top (111) planes.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of the present study was to evaluate labiopalatal angulation of maxillary anterior teeth using Custom-made jig, Profile projector, and ImageJ computer software methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The subjects for this study were selected in the age-group of 20-30 years having permanent dentition, including 2nd molars and bilateral Angle's class 1 molar and canine relationship. Recording the labiopalatal angulation in proximal view was carried out by using one manual method and two digital methods namely using Custom-made jig, Profile projector, and ImageJ computer software, respectively. Alginate impressions were made for the subjects, and the spatial relationship of the maxilla to the cranium was recorded using a facebow. The casts were mounted in a semi-adjustable articulator, and the articulated mounted casts with the mounting ring were transferred to the Custom-made jig, and angulations were measured in proximal view. Digital methods of measurement were recorded by using Profile projector and ImageJ computer software methods. Data were tabulated and statistically analyzed. RESULTS: In males, the mean labiopalatal angulation of maxillary right and left maxillary canines of Custom-made jig was 91.94 ± 1.47 and 91.70 ± 1.68, in Profile projector method 87.41 ± 3.75 and 87.58 ± 3.79, and in ImageJ computer software 84.23 ± 5.72 and 83.29 ± 6.74, respectively. In females, Custom-made jig was 91.82 ± 1.55 and 92.17 ± 1.84, in Profile projector method 86.70 ± 5.58 and 86.94 ± 5.57, and in ImageJ computer software 82.76 ± 6.34 and 83.05 ± 6.12, respectively. There was a very high statistically significant difference found between different methods. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the values obtained in the digital methods (i.e., both the Profile projector and ImageJ computer software) were more accurate than the manual method. However, the ImageJ computer software was most reliable in comparison with the values obtained in Profile projector. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The labiopalatal angulation of anterior teeth will act as a guideline in re-establishing the correct angulations and the anatomic contours of the maxillary arch to achieve the desired esthetics that provide adequate lip support and to restore the required functions.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this retrospective study was to assess the effect of the nail to canal ratio and the number and configuration of distal locking screws in bone healing in tibial shaft fractures. METHODS: We analyzed 223 consecutive tibial shaft fractures treated with reamed intramedullary nailing between January 2014 and December 2020. We recorded and evaluated the nail to canal ratio (NCR) and the number and configuration of distal locking screws. Median NCR was 0.87 (IQR 0.82-0.94). Ten (4.48%) fractures were treated with one distal locking screw, 173 (77.57%) with two, and 40 (17.93%) with three. Uniplanar fixation was used in 63 (28.25%), biplanar in 150 (67.26%), and triplanar in 10 (4.48%) cases. Uni-, bi-, and multivariate analyses were performed to compare patients who achieved bone union with those who did not. RESULTS: Bone union was achieved in 195 (87.44%) patients. Uni- and bivariate analyses showed that bone union increased significantly with larger NCR (p = 0.0001) and a greater number of locking planes (p = 0.001) and distal screws (p = 0.046). NCR > 0.78 (OR 48.77 CI 95% 15.39-154.56; p = < 0.0001) and distal locking screw configuration (OR 2.91 CI 95% 1.12-9.91; p = 0.046) were identified as independent variables for union. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that in tibial shaft fractures treated with intramedullary nailing, NCR should be equal to or greater than 0.79. Additionally, distal locking screws should be used with a biplanar or triplanar configuration.

RESUMO

Metallic zinc anodes in zinc-ion batteries suffer from problematic Zn dendrite chemistry. Previous works have shown that preferred-orientation crystal planes can help dendrite-free metal anodes. This work reports a nanothickness (≈570 nm) AgZn3  coating to regulate the Zn growth. First, AgZn3 @Zn anode avoids the problem, in Ag@Zn anode, that the rate of electrochemical Ag-Zn alloying is slower than that of Zn dendrites growth. Batteries life increased from 112 h (pure Zn) and 932 h (Ag@Zn) to 1360 h (AgZn3 @Zn) at 2 mA cm-2  and 1 mAh cm-2 . Then, plasma sputtering can remove nonconductive ZnO and improve Zn-ion affinity, which brings a longer life for AuZn3 @Zn (423 h), CuZn3 @Zn (385 h), and AgZn3 @Zn (1150 h) than pure Zn (93 h) at 1 mAh cm-2 . More importantly, AgZn3 (002) has a high matching with the Zn (002), which can guide ordered Zn epitaxial deposition, thereby achieving dense and dendrite-free Zn growth. This work clearly captures the fascinating structure of the densely stacked Zn layers on the AgZn3  layer. This strategy not only improves the performance of zinc-ion batteries greatly but will also help one understand the matching mechanism of the (002) vertical crystal plane.

RESUMO

Zinc metal has a severe dendrite issue caused by the uneven Zn plating/stripping during continual cycles, which hinders the practical application of ZIBs. The surficial atomic structure of zinc anode plays a decisive role in solving dendrites and improving the electrochemical performance. According to the density functional theory results, Zn (100) plane possesses a much stronger adsorption energy of zinc atom compared with the (002), thus zinc atom preferentially nucleates on the (100) surface. It subsequently continues to grow vertically on (100). Herein, the zinc anode is designed with hexagonal-hole patterns (h-Zn) through a phosphoric acid etching reaction. An abundance of Zn (100) crystal planes are exposed perpendicularly to the anode surface, while the (002) surfaces are at the bottom of these hexagonal holes. Zinc prefers to deposit in hexagonal holes at the (100) surfaces, favoring the restraining of the surficial dendrite growth and accelerating the Zn deposition kinetics. Thus, the symmetric cell using h-Zn exhibits a long cycling lifespan for over 1200 h and extremely low polarization voltage of ≈80 mV at 5 mA cm-2 and 1 mAh cm-2 . This work provides an insight into the surficial structure design and crystal plane regulation to fabricate brilliant zinc metal anodes.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Development of a quantitative model and associated workflow for predicting the mechanical deformation properties (plastic deformation or cleavage fracture) of organic single crystals from their crystallographic structures using molecular and crystallographic modelling. METHODS: Intermolecular synthons, hydrogen bonding, crystal morphology and surface chemistry are modelled using empirical force fields with the data integrated into the analysis of lattice deformation as computed using a statistical approach. RESULTS: The approach developed comprises three main components. Firstly, the identification of the likely direction of deformation based on lattice unit cell geometry; secondly, the identification of likely lattice planes for deformation through the calculation of the strength and stereochemistry of interplanar intermolecular interactions, surface plane rugosity and surface energy; thirdly, identification of potential crystal planes for cleavage fracture by assessing intermolecular bonding anisotropy. Pentaerythritol is predicted to fracture by brittle cleavage on the {001} lattice planes by strong in-plane hydrogen-bond interactions in the <110>, whereas pentaerythritol tetranitrate is predicted to deform by plastic deformation through the slip system {110} < 001>, with both predictions being in excellent agreement with known experimental data. CONCLUSION: A crystallographic framework and associated workflow for predicting the mechanical deformation of molecular crystals is developed through quantitative assessment of lattice energetics, crystal surface chemistry and crystal defects. The potential for the de novo prediction of the mechanical deformation of pharmaceutical materials using this approach is highlighted for its potential importance in the design of formulated drug products process as needed for manufacture by direct compression.

RESUMO

Proper control of postoperative edema in rhinoplasty matters significantly, both regarding patient satisfaction and preventing loss of definition and aesthetic surface contour in the dorsum and tip. The "3 points compartmentalization" technique described in this paper aims to fulfill the above goals by (1) dissection in a subperichondrial-subperiosteal plane and (2) reducing the dead space by three strategically placed key sutures that compartmentalize the nose and redrape the single-plane dissection in an anatomically correct position.Level of Evidence IV This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Standard planes (SPs) are crucial for the diagnosis of fetal brain malformation. However, it is very time-consuming and requires extensive experiences to acquire the SPs accurately due to the large difference in fetal posture and the complexity of SPs definitions. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to present a guiding approach that could assist sonographer to obtain the SPs more accurately and more quickly. METHODS: To begin with, sonographer uses the 3D probe to scan the fetal head to obtain 3D volume data, and then we used affine transformation to calibrate 3D volume data to the standard body position and established the corresponding 3D head model in 'real time'. When the sonographer uses the 2D probe to scan a plane, the position of current plane can be clearly show in 3D head model by our RLNet (regression location network), which can conduct the sonographer to obtain the three SPs more accurately. When the three SPs are located, the sagittal plane and the coronal planes can be automatically generated according to the spatial relationship with the three SPs. RESULTS: Experimental results conducted on 3200 2D US images show that the RLNet achieves average angle error of the transthalamic plane was 3.91±2.86°, which has a obvious improvement compared other published data. The automatically generated coronal and sagittal SPs conform the diagnostic criteria and the diagnostic requirements of fetal brain malformation. CONCLUSIONS: A guiding scanning method based deep learning for ultrasonic brain malformation screening is firstly proposed and it has a pragmatic value for future clinical application.

RESUMO

We study the symplectic Radon transform from the point of view of the metaplectic representation of the symplectic group and its action on the Lagrangian Grassmannian. We give rigorous proofs in the general setting of multi-dimensional quantum systems. We interpret the Radon transform of a quantum state as a generalized marginal distribution for its Wigner transform; the inverse Radon transform thus appears as a "demarginalization process" for the Wigner distribution.

RESUMO

Recovery and conservation of threatened species require adequate institutional responses. We tested an approach to systematically identify and measure how an institutional framework acknowledges threats and required responses for the recovery of endangered species. We measured institutional functional fit with a drivers-pressure-state-impacts-response (DPSIR) model integrated with a quantitative text mining method and qualitative analysis of statutory instruments to examine regulatory responses that support the recovery of 2 endangered species native to Australia, the bridled nailtail wallaby (Onychogalea fraenata) and the Eastern Bristlebird (Dasyornis brachypterus). The key components of the DPSIR model were present in the institutional framework at statutory and operational levels, but some institutional gaps remained in the protection and recovery of the Eastern Bristlebird, including feral predator control, weed control, and grazing management in some locations. However, regulatory frameworks varied in their geographic scope and the application and implementation of many instruments remained optional. Quantitative text mining can be used to quickly navigate a large volume of regulatory documents, but challenges remain in selection of terms, queries of co-occurrence, and interpretation of word frequency counts. To inform policy, we recommend that quantitative assessments of institutional fit be complemented with qualitative analysis and interpreted in light of the sociopolitical and institutional context.

Oxygen vacancies are known to play a crucial role in tuning the physical properties and technological applications of titanium dioxide TiO2. Over the last decades, defects in substoichiometric TiO2 have been commonly associated with the formation of TinO2n-x Magnéli phases, which are extended planar defects originating from crystallographic shear planes. By combining advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques, electron energy-loss spectroscopy and atomistic simulations, we reach new understanding of the oxygen vacancy induced structural modulations in anatase, ruling out the earlier shear-plane model. Structural modulations are instead shown to be due to the formation of oxygen vacancy superstructures that extend periodically inside the films, preserving the crystalline order of anatase. Elucidating the structure of oxygen defects in anatase is a crucial step for improving the functionalities of such material system and to engineer devices with targeted properties.

RESUMO

Near-infrared (NIR) light-triggered hyperthermia has exhibited promising prospects in oncology therapy due to the unique merits including minimal invasiveness, monitorable, excellent therapeutic effect, and negligible side effects. Especially, the second NIR biowindow (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) with less absorbance and scattering by skin tissue, and deep tissue penetration, has received extensive attention for photonic hyperthermia. Unfortunately, the dissatisfactory photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) and cumbersome preparation process of photo-driven heat conversion nanomaterials seriously hamper the future clinical application. To combat the aforementioned challenges, high imaging performance and desired therapeutic outcome 1D nanorods are constructed based on gadolinium-integrated tellurium nanorods (Te-Gd). In this system, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging-guided photonic hyperthermia can be easily implemented in cooperation with Te-Gd. Importantly, Te-Gd possesses high PCE (41%) in the NIR-II biowindow because the transition of the excited electron can easily occur from the valence band (VB) to the conduction band (CB) on (1 0 1) and (1 0 2) crystal planes. Furthermore, the distinctive photostability, high tumor accumulation, as well as low systemic adverse effects of Te-Gd guarantee the potential in the clinic.

RESUMO

Bias toward legally protecting and prioritizing charismatic taxonomic groups, such as mammals and birds, and against others, such as insects and plants, is well documented. However, the relative costs of conserving various taxonomic groups and the potential of these costs to interact with existing biases have been much less explored. We analyzed conservation programs across more than 2,000 species in 3 countries to investigate the costs of conserving species within taxonomic groups and how these costs might affect conservation planning. For each data set, we tested for differences in mean annual cost among taxonomic groups. For the data set from the United States, recovery plans differed in duration, so we also tested for differences in total costs among taxonomic groups. Although the costs for individual species varied widely, there were strong international consistencies. For example, mammals cost 8-26 times more on average to conserve than plants and 13-19 times more to conserve than aquatic invertebrates. On average, bird species cost 5-30 times more to conserve than plants and 6-14 times more to conserve than aquatic invertebrates. These cost differences could exacerbate unequal resource allocation among taxonomic groups such that more charismatic groups both receive more attention and require more resources, leading to neglect of other taxonomic groups.

OBJECTIVE: The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a three-dimensional (3D) software tool (smart planes) for displaying fetal brain planes, and the secondary purpose was to evaluate its accuracy in performing automatic measurements. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective study included singleton fetuses with a gestational age (GA) greater than 18 weeks. Transabdominal two-dimensional ultrasound (2DUS) and 3D smart planes images were respectively used to obtain the basic planes of the fetal brain, with five parameters measured. The images, by either two-dimensional (2D) manual or 3D automatic operation, were reviewed by two experienced sonographers. The agreements between two measurements were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 226 cases were included. The rates of successful detection by automatic display were as high as 80%. There was substantial agreement between the measurements of the biparietal diameter, head circumference and transcerebellar diameter, but poor agreement between the measurements of cisterna magna and lateral ventricle width. CONCLUSIONS: Smart Planes might be valuable for the rapid evaluation of fetal brain, because it simplifies the evaluation process. However, the technology requires improvement. In addition, this technology cannot replace the conventional manual US scans; it can only be used as an additional approach.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To identify opinions of Primary Healthcare nurses on the use and usefulness of standardised nursing care plans and traditional nursing language systems in the practice settings. DESIGN: Multicentre, observational, cross-sectional study. SETTING: Primary Healthcare centres in Catalonia. PARTICIPANTS: Sample size was estimated at 1,668 registered nurses. Consecutive sampling was applied. INTERVENTIONS: On-line survey containing questions on ease, usefulness, and use of nursing care plans and standardised nursing language systems. MEASUREMENTS: Descriptive statistics, including percentages, central tendency, and dispersion measures. Statistical significance was set at P≤.05. RESULTS: The final analysis included 1,813 questionnaires. Participants stated that care plans have a medium added value, however their use is frequently incorrect. They stated to have a fair level of knowledge on traditional standardised nursing languages, and most were of the opinion that these languages are difficult to use in practice (81%) and not useful to represent nursing care provision and its outcomes (78%). Regardless of their education level and years of experience, the participants assessed as insufficient the clarity (P=.058), ease of use (P=.240), and usefulness (P=.039) of these language systems in practice. CONCLUSIONS: Nurses say that urgent changes are required in the use of care plans. This includes changing the language systems, and improving data and information that positively impacts on the provision of nursing care, as well as to enhance the health outcomes of the individuals receiving Primary Healthcare services.

RESUMO

Let x and y be two unit vectors in a normed plane R 2 . We say that x is Birkhoff orthogonal to y if the line through x in the direction y supports the unit disc. A B-measure (Fankhänel in Beitr Algebra Geom 52(2):335-342, 2011) is an angular measure µ on the unit circle for which µ ( C ) = π / 2 whenever C is a shorter arc of the unit circle connecting two Birkhoff orthogonal points. We present a characterization of the normed planes that admit a B-measure.
