PURPOSE: To describe adherence to sustainable healthy diets among a sample of 958 Chilean pre-schoolers (3-6 years) and explore associations between adherence and child and maternal sociodemographic and anthropometric characteristics. METHODS: Children's adherence to sustainable healthy diets was calculated from single multiple-pass 24-h dietary recalls using the Planetary Health Diet Index for children and adolescents (PHDI-C). Higher PHDI-C scores (max score = 150 points) represent greater adherence. Adjusted linear regression models were fitted to explore associations between PHDI-C scores and child and maternal characteristics. RESULTS: Children obtained low total PHDI-C scores (median 50.0 [IQR 39.5-59.8] points). This resulted from low consumption of nuts & peanuts, legumes, vegetables, whole cereals, and vegetable oils; a lack of balance between dark green and red & orange vegetables, inadequate consumption of tubers & potatoes and eggs & white meats, and excess consumption of dairy products, palm oil, red meats, and added sugars. Mean PHDI-C total score was significantly higher (50.6 [95%CI 49.6, 51.7] vs 47.3 [95%CI 45.0, 49.5]) among children whose mothers were ≥ 25 years compared to those with younger mothers. Positive associations were observed between scores for fruits and maternal education, vegetables and maternal age, added sugars and child weight status, while negative associations were observed between fruits and child age, and vegetable oils and maternal education. Scores for dairy products PHDI-C component were lower among girls. CONCLUSION: Adherence to sustainable healthy diets was low among this sample of Chilean children and was significantly associated with maternal age, being lower among children whose mothers were younger.

Questionnaires to detect emotional and behavioral (EB) problems in preventive child healthcare (PCH) should be short; this potentially affects their validity and reliability. Computerized adaptive testing (CAT) could overcome this weakness. The aim of this study was to (1) develop a CAT to measure EB problems among pre-school children and (2) assess the efficiency and validity of this CAT. We used a Dutch national dataset obtained from parents of pre-school children undergoing a well-child care assessment by PCH (n = 2192, response 70%). Data regarded 197 items on EB problems, based on four questionnaires, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), the Ages and Stages Questionnaire: Social Emotional (ASQ:SE), and the Brief Infant-Toddler Social and Emotional Assessment (BITSEA). Using 80% of the sample, we calculated item parameters necessary for a CAT and defined a cutoff for EB problems. With the remaining part of the sample, we used simulation techniques to determine the validity and efficiency of this CAT, using as criterion a total clinical score on the CBCL. Item criteria were met by 193 items. This CAT needed, on average, 16 items to identify children with EB problems. Sensitivity and specificity compared to a clinical score on the CBCL were 0.89 and 0.91, respectively, for total problems; 0.80 and 0.93 for emotional problems; and 0.94 and 0.91 for behavioral problems.    Conclusion: A CAT is very promising for the identification of EB problems in pre-school children, as it seems to yield an efficient, yet high-quality identification. This conclusion should be confirmed by real-life administration of this CAT. What is Known: • Studies indicate the validity of using computerized adaptive test (CAT) applications to identify emotional and behavioral problems in school-aged children. • Evidence is as yet limited on whether CAT applications can also be used with pre-school children. What is New: • The results of this study show that a computerized adaptive test is very promising for the identification of emotional and behavior problems in pre-school children, as it appears to yield an efficient and high-quality identification.

BACKGROUND: Previously, we have reported on the efficacy and real-world effectiveness of a parent-oriented mobile health intervention (MINISTOP 1.0 and 2.0), which have shown improvements in pre-school children's lifestyle behaviours. However, there is a need for implementation evidence. The overall aims of this study are to: (i) compare two different implementation strategies for MINISTOP 3.0 (Basic vs. Enhanced) on: acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, organizational readiness to implement MINISTOP 3.0 within Swedish child healthcare (primary outcomes) as well as reach, costs, and adoption of MINISTOP 3.0 (secondary outcomes); (ii) evaluate cost-effectiveness of MINISTOP 3.0; (iii) explore the sustainability of MINISTOP 3.0; (iv) evaluate the determinants of effectiveness of MINISTOP 3.0 on children's key lifestyle behaviours; and (v) investigate the long-term effects of MINISTOP 3.0 on children's body mass index. METHODS: A hybrid type III implementation-effectiveness design will be used. A cluster randomized controlled trial will be conducted to compare the effects of basic versus enhanced implementation strategies on the outcomes at the child healthcare level. A minimum of 50 child healthcare centers across Sweden will participate and we aim to recruit 120 nurses. Child healthcare nurses in both groups will offer the MINISTOP 3.0 app to the families at the 2.5/3-year routine visit. Basic implementation strategies include educational meeting with nurses, formal implementation blueprint, develop/distribute educational materials and enhanced implementation includes all aforementioned strategies plus auditing/providing feedback and ongoing training for nurses. All outcomes will be assessed at baseline and 12 months post-implementation. Implementation outcomes will be assessed quantitatively using questionnaires and sustainability will be assessed qualitatively at 12 months. Children's key lifestyle behaviours will be collected through a parental questionnaire within the MINISTOP app at baseline and 6 months after they have received the app. Children's weight/height will be measured at routine visits at 2.5/3 (baseline), 4 and 5 years of age. DISCUSSION: This study will provide important implementation evidence with regards to implementing mHealth interventions within Swedish child healthcare at scale and these results have the potential to be generalized to other digital interventions being implemented in child healthcare. Child eating behaviour traits are associated with several aspects of dietary intake of pre-school children, however the associations between child eating behaviour traits and overall dietary quality in pre-school children has not been examined. Additionally, it is unknown how these relationships vary by age. This study examines the associations between child eating behaviour traits and pre-school children's dietary quality and whether children's age moderates these associations. This study utilises cross-sectional online survey data collected from mothers (n = 1367) of pre-school aged children (2-5 years) from across Australia. The survey included a validated measure of four child eating behaviour traits and a validated measure of diet quality. Multiple linear regression assessed associations between child eating behaviour traits and dietary quality, including interactions between child eating behaviour traits and child age. The average age of the children was 3.3 years, with 50.2% reported as males. Enjoyment of food was positively associated with dietary quality (B coefficient: 2.51, p < 0.001). Food fussiness and satiety responsiveness were inversely associated with dietary quality (B coefficients: 2.59 and -2.25, respectively, p < 0.001), while food responsiveness was not related to diet quality. Child age moderated associations between food fussiness and dietary quality (B coefficient: 0.38, p = 0.025). The difference in dietary quality between lower and higher food fussiness is most pronounced among 5-year-old children. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that it is important for future interventions aiming to improve dietary quality of pre-school children to target children with lower food enjoyment, higher food fussiness or satiety responsiveness as possible ways to improve child dietary quality. Future interventions should also have a particular focus on strategies to reduce food fussiness for older preschoolers.

The ability to regulate emotions is vital to successful social interactions. This study explores whether visual attention bias is associated with emotion dysregulation (ED) in early childhood. Parental reports of child ED (Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) and Temper Tantrum Scale) were examined in relation to child visual attention bias whilst viewing emotional faces. Results indicated that the level of eye gaze fixation towards emotional images and faces was associated with ED when social function (measured with the Social Responsiveness Scale), gender, age, and attention problems (measured from the CBCL subscale), were adjusted. The modifying effect on visual attention bias was evaluated using interaction analysis in the generalized linear model. The level of visual attention bias, indicated by the proportion of eye gaze fixation time on areas of interest (AOIs) in images displaying unpleasant emotions (such as anger), was inversely associated with the level of externalising problem behaviours (p = .014). Additionally, the association of eye gaze fixation time for AOIs displaying negative emotional cues with the level of externalising problem behaviours varied by age (p = .04), with younger children (aged < 70 months) demonstrating a stronger association than older children (aged ≥ 70 months). Findings suggest that young children with greater ED symptoms look less at unpleasant emotional cues. However, this relationship is attenuated as children become older. Further research to identify objective biomarkers that incorporate eye-tracking tasks may support prediction of ED-related mental health issues in the early years.

Background & objectives: Research studies in the 1970s reported that in pre-school children, undernutrition increased the risk of infections and infections aggravated undernutrition. Over decades, there has been a reduction in prevalence of undernutrition and improvement in access to healthcare for treatment of infections. A mixed longitudinal study was undertaken to assess whether over time there were any changes from the earlier reported effect of undernutrition prior to infection on the risk of morbidity and effect of morbidity on nutritional status in pre-school children. Methods: Pre-school (0-59 months of age) children from urban low- and middle-income families whose parents were willing to allow their participation in the study were enrolled. Information on sociodemographic profile of the families was collected at enrolment. Weight of all children and length in infants were recorded every month; length/height in children 12-59 months of age was recorded once in three months. Morbidity information was collected through fortnightly visits. Results: 3888 pre-school children were followed up in 74636 home visits. Among these children, underweight and wasting were associated with a small increase in risk of infections. The odds ratio for risk of infection for underweight children was 1.09 (95% CI: 1.02 to 1.16) and for wasting was 1.18 (95% CI: 1.08 to 1.29). The deterioration in Z scores for weight-for-age and body mass index-for-age in children during illness and convalescence was small but significant (P<0.001). Interpretation & conclusions: The increased risk of infections in undernourished children living in overcrowded tenements in areas with poor environmental hygiene was not significant, perhaps because the risk of infection in normally nourished children was also high. The deterioration in nutritional status following infection was small because of the ready access to and utilization of health and nutrition care.

BACKGROUND: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends medical home care for children and youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) for health needs. Children and youth with ASD also receive educational services for cognitive, social, and behavioral needs. We measured whether inadequate medical home care was significantly associated with current educational service use, controlling for sociodemographic factors. METHODS: We analyzed the 2016/2017 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) on 1,248 children and youth with ASD ages 1-17. Inadequate medical home care was operationalized as negative or missing responses to at least one medical home component. Educational service use was defined as current service use under individualized family service plans (IFSP) and individualized education programs (IEP). RESULTS: Inadequate medical home care was significantly associated with higher likelihood of current educational service use (aOR = 1.95, 95% CI [1.10, 3.44], p = 0.03). After adjustment, older children (aOR = 0.91, 95% CI [0.84, 0.99], p = 0.03), lower maternal health (aOR = 0.52, 95% CI [0.29, 0.94], p = 0.03), and children without other special health care factors (aOR = 0.38, 95% CI [0.17-0.85], p = 0.02) had significantly lower odds of current educational service use. CONCLUSIONS: Inadequate medical home care yielded higher odds of current educational service use. Child's age, maternal health, and lack of other special health care factors were associated with lower odds of current educational service use. Future research should examine medical home care defined in the NSCH and improving educational service use via medical home care.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of developmental delay (DD) in preschool children is crucial for counselling parents, initiating diagnostic work-up, and starting early intervention (EI). METHODS: We conducted a register study of all preschool children referred for EI in the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland, in 2017 (N = 1,785) and used an online survey among primary care physicians (PCPs, N = 271) to evaluate the care service of DD children. RESULTS: PCPs accounted for 79.5% of all referrals by physicians and had correctly referred over 90% of the children in need of EI at an average age of 39.3 months (SD 8.9). In the survey, which represents 59.2% of all pediatricians and 11.3% of all general practitioners in the Canton, PCPs reported performing a mean of 13.5 (range 0-50, SD 10.7) well-child visits per week to preschool children and estimated well-child visits to be the most frequent type of consultation (66.7%) for the identification of DD. Parents' hesitancy in accepting further evaluation or support were reported by 88.7%. CONCLUSIONS: Most preschool children with DD are identified in well-child visits. These visits represent an ideal opportunity for early detection of developmental impairment and initiation of EI. Carefully addressing parents' reservations could reduce the rate of refusal, thus improving early support for children with DD.

Parent feeding practices influence a child's dietary intake. Many studies examining how parents react to children's fussy eating behaviours have been limited to questionnaire measures, which assess a limited number of feeding practices. There is a lack of research exploring the range of strategies parents use when their child is being fussy and/or refusing to eat. Therefore, the aims of this study are to describe the strategies used by mothers when their child is being fussy or refusing to eat, and to assess differences in the strategies depending on the child's trait fussiness levels. In 2018, 1504 mothers of children aged 2-5 years completed an online survey. Trait fussiness was assessed using the Children's Eating Behaviour Questionnaire. Mothers were also asked the open-ended question "What are the strategies you use when your child is being fussy or refusing to eat?". Inductive thematic analysis was conducted using NVivo. Themes were compared by child trait fussiness levels. Seven main themes were identified: child-led feeding/trust in child's appetite, spectrum of pressure, home or family strategies, different types of food offerings, communication, avoid certain strategies, and never or rarely fussy. Mothers of children with severe trait fussiness levels reported more pressuring or persuasive strategies. This study provides novel information regarding the diverse range of feeding practices parents use in response to children's fussy eating behaviours. Mothers used more feeding strategies typically associated with unhealthy dietary intake for children of high levels of trait fussiness. It is important that future interventions tailor the information to provide support to parents of children with high levels of trait fussiness regarding the use of feeding practices recommended to support healthy dietary intake.

The aim was to compare the emotional status and problem behavior of pre-school children according to their mother's occupational status in two groups before the pandemic and during the pandemic period. Mothers were asked to fill out a survey form containing sociodemographic characteristics, the Emotion Regulation Checklist (ERC) and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) . Total ERC and Emotion Regulation Subscale scores were significantly higher and Lability-Negativity Subscale scores, conduct problems, peer relationship problems, internalising scores and total SDQ scores were significantly lower in the pandemic period group than in the pre-pandemic group. The occupational status of mothers in the PanP and Pre-Pan groups did not significantly differ in ERC scores, peer relationship problems scores, and prosocial behavior, whereas, internalization was lower during PanP and was associated with the mother's occupational status.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors influencing the utilization of oral health care among 5 years old children. METHODS: We conducted two observational cross-sectional studies. The studies were conducted in 2005 and 2015 and included 5-year-old children who underwent dental examination by trained dentists and the caregivers of the children were requested to answer the questionnaire. Multi-level stratified sampling method was used. Chi-square tests were used to analyze the utilization of dental care and other socio-economic variables. Logistic regression models were employed to explore the primary factors influencing the use of dental care among pre-school children. RESULTS: In 2005, a total of 399 and in 2015, 492 child-caregiver pairs were included. The majority of the caregivers in both surveys were females, comprising 68.2% and 74.8% of the caregivers in 2005 and 2015, respectively. 75.2% and 87.0% (p < 0.05) of the respondents had an education level of lesser than 9 years. The prevalence of caries was higher in 2015 (63.2%) (p < 0.05) than in 2005 (53.4%). In 2005 and 2015, the utilization of dental care services was 20.8% and 20.0%, respectively. A statistically significant association was observed between caries and dental care use in 5-year-olds over the past decade. After adjusting for confounders, dental service usage among children in urban areas was 1.62 times higher than that of rural areas in 2005 (95% CI 0.069-0.571), and the self-assessment of caregivers regarding their child's oral health significantly improved oral health use in 2015. CONCLUSION: The utilization of dental care services over the past decade is insufficient among pre-school children in northwest China. Hence, with the decreasing gap about economic and health service resources, policymakers should place greater emphasis on raising awareness among caregivers about the oral health status of their children.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities on electroencephalography (EEG) results have been reported in a high percentage of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The purpose of this study was to explore the prevalence of EEG abnormalities in a clinical population of pre-school children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and the differences in terms of the following phenotypic characteristics: adaptive behavior, executive functioning, severity of Autism Spectrum Disorder core symptoms, and comorbidity symptoms. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 69 children who attended the Autism Spectrum Disorder early diagnosis program with electroencephalography and clinical diagnosis was performed. A battery of questionnaires was also made to parents to evaluate emotions, behavior, and functional skills for daily living. RESULTS: Out of 69 pre-school children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, twenty nine (42%) had abnormalities in electroencephalography results. The group with abnormal epileptiform electroencephalography exhibited more impairment in executive functioning and social-relationship coexisting symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of an abnormal epileptiform electroencephalography in pre-school children with ASD already suggests a worse development in clinical features.

A good assessment of dietary methyl-group donor intake (folate, choline, betaine, methionine) is needed to investigate the effect of methyl-group donor intake on children's health. The aim is to develop and validate a food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to estimate the daily intake of methyl-group donors in preschoolers. For the relative validity and reproducibility of the FFQ, a 7-day estimated dietary record (7d EDR) and repeated measurements 6 weeks apart (n = 77) were used respectively. For the validity (n = 75), a moderate ranking ability was obtained (de-attenuated Pearson correlation = 0.43-0.70; weighted ƙ 0.10-0.40), but the FFQ tends to overestimate the real intake. Cross-classification analysis showed that 38% (choline) and 28% (betaine) of the subjects were misclassified. The FFQ shows a moderate to good reproducibility, intra-class correlation coefficients range between 0.67 (betaine) and 0.76 (choline) with a maximal misclassification of 6.5% for betaine (weighted ƙ 0.37-0.69) (n = 77). CONCLUSION: The FFQ is a tool with a moderate validity and reproducibility to estimate the consumption of dietary methyl-group donors in preschoolers. This tool might be used in future research epidemiological studies including preschoolers. WHAT IS KNOWN: • Poor dietary habits during childhood have been associated with chronic disease in adulthood. • Methyl-group donors are important for DNA methylation, which is the underlying mechanism of disease development. WHAT IS NEW: • For the first time, a food-frequency questionnaire that can assess the intake of methione, folate, choline, and betaine has been developed and validated for the use in preschoolers.

BACKGROUND: The amount of time children spend outside of their home environment has increased over the past decades. Therefore, the quality of the health behaviour environments where young children spend time is likely to impact their health behaviour opportunities. The aim of this study was to describe the proportion of mothers who consider it possible to make changes in their local communities to increase opportunities for children to eat healthily, be physically active, and limit screen time exposure, as well as the proportion who have attempted to do so. The characteristics of mothers with differing advocacy beliefs and intentions were explored. METHODS: Cross-sectional data collected using questionnaires from 307 mothers who participated in the 3.5-year follow-up of the INFANT cluster-randomized controlled trial were used. Frequencies were used to assess the number of mothers who thought it possible to bring about change in their local communities and for the those who had attempted to do so. Binary logistic regression analyses were used to compare sociodemographic characteristics of mothers with differing responses. RESULTS: Most mothers thought it was possible to bring about change in their local community with regards to providing more opportunities for their child to eat healthily (83.7%), be physically active (90.9%) as well as limit exposure to screen time (63.5%). However, less than 19% and 11% of mothers have thought about or tried to bring about change in their child's childcare centre or local community, respectively. No sociodemographic differences were found between the mothers who thought it was possible to bring about actioning change (p-values > 0.1) or for those that have thought about change (p-values > 0.1). CONCLUSION: As children are continuously being exposed to obesogenic environments future quantitative and qualitative studies are needed to describe how to promote parental advocacy and engagement, in order to provide children with environments that support healthy lifestyle behaviours.

BACKGROUND: Safe and healthy learning environment in pre-schools has received increased attention in promoting the well-being of pre-school children. However, pediatric injuries have remained one of the leading causes of childhood morbidity and mortality around the globe. Empowering pre-school teachers with first aid competencies have been identified as being of potential strategy against pediatric health burdens of problem. This study tested the effect of established pediatric first aid training on pre-school teachers' knowledge, attitude, and intention to practice first aid management to pre-school children in Zanzibar.  METHODS: Uncontrolled quasi-experimental design with a quantitative research approach was conducted in Teachers' Resource Centers among 120 preschool teachers at Pemba Island, Zanzibar. First aid training was facilitated based on the prescribed guidelines and standards of materials adapted from the American Academy of Pediatrics and implemented. The intervention was preceded by a baseline assessment using structured questionnaires adopted from previous studies that served as the main data collection tool. RESULTS: Participants' mean age was 32 years ± 6.2 with 84.2% of the sample being females. Given the training, post-test findings demonstrated a significant increase (p < 0.01) in participants' first aid management scores with mean differences of M = 15.08 ± 5.34 (Knowledge), M = 26.99 ± 6.587 (Attitude), and (M = 4.76 ± 0.648 (Intentional practice). CONCLUSION: The established pediatric first aid training can enhance the spectrum of managing pediatric injuries among preschool teachers in Zanzibar. Ongoing public health services opportunities should be structured within teachers' continuous learning against pediatric injuries in Zanzibar-Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: The assessment of preschoolers' motor skills is essential to know young children's motor development and evaluate the intervention effects of promotion in children's sports activities. The purpose of this study was to review the motor skills assessment tools in Chinese pre-school-aged children, compare them in the international context, and provide guidelines to find appropriate motor skill assessment tools for developing children in China. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was carried out using the WANFAGN, CNKI, VIP, ERIC, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and SPORT Discus databases. Relevant articles published between January 2000 and May 2020 were retrieved. Studies that described the discriminative and evaluative measures of motor skills among the population aged 3-6 years in China were included. RESULTS: A total of 17 studies were included in this study describing seven tools, including four self-developed tools and three international tools used in China. TGMD-2 appeared in a large proportion of the studies. The international tools used in China were incomplete in terms of translation, verification of reliability and validity, item selection, and implementation. Regarding the self-constructed tools, the CDCC was the most utilized self-developed tool, but it was mainly applied in intellectual development assessment. By comparing Chinese self-constructed and international tools, the construction of the CDCC and the Gross Motor Development Assessment Scale contained relatively complete development steps. However, the test content, validity and reliability, implementation instruction, and generalizability of self-constructed tools are still lacking. CONCLUSIONS: Both international and self-developed motor skills assessment tools have been rarely applied in China. Available tools lack enough validation and appropriate adjustments. Cultural differences in motor development between Chinese and Western populations should be considered when constructing a Chinese localized motor skill assessment tool.

Parents' feeding practices are associated with children's food intake. However, little is known about the patterns of feeding practices used by groups of mothers or how these groupings of practices influence children's dietary intake. Therefore, the aims of this study are to classify and describe groups of mothers according to their patterns of feeding practices and to examine the associations between the groups of maternal feeding practices and pre-school children's dietary quality. In 2018, 1349 mothers based in Australia of children aged 2-5 years completed an online survey including validated measures of nine feeding practices and dietary quality, measured using thirteen summed dietary items. Latent profile analysis was used to identify distinct groups of mothers who shared similar feeding practices. Linear regression models were fitted to examine associations between the feeding practice profiles and child dietary quality. A three-profile model was chosen based on interpretation, profile size and statistical model fit criteria. Profile 1 had lower mean scores of structure-related feeding practices than the other profiles; profile 2 had mean scores reflecting slightly higher use of most structure-related feeding practices and lower mean scores of some non-responsive feeding practices; profile 3 had higher mean scores of non-responsive feeding practices than the other profiles. Profile 1 (-2.95, CI: 3.97; -1.92) and profile 3 (-2.81, CI: 3.49; -2.13) had lower mean child dietary quality scores compared with profile 2. Profile 2, which reflected the most engagement in structure-related feeding practices combined with least non-responsive feeding practices, was associated with higher child diet quality, compared with the other two profiles. The identification of these unique profiles could help to tailor future interventions to consider patterns of feeding practices used by groups of mothers.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess subject wise and tooth wise distribution and prevalence of traumatic injuries to the anterior teeth of 2- to 6-year-old children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was performed. Primary maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth of 1,800 children aged between 2 years and 6 years, who attended 20 pre-schools in National Capital Region Delhi, India, were examined by a single examiner, and a questionnaire was filled in person by the parent/guardian. Andreasen's classification was used to classify the traumatic injuries. The Chi-square test was used to statistically analyze the variation in traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) with age and gender. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine the influence of independent variables on the occurrence of TDIs. RESULTS: The prevalence of TDIs was 17%. Significant and highly significant differences were found between boys and girls for cause and location of trauma (p < 0.05) and tooth type involved (p < 0.001) with boys being more prone to such injuries. The commonest cause of injury was due to falls and the location was playground. The teeth most commonly affected were the maxillary central incisors (36.9%) followed by maxillary lateral incisors (3.3%), and the least affected were the maxillary and mandibular canines (0.3%). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of traumatic injuries to the anterior teeth in 2- to 6-year-old children in National Capital Region of Delhi, India, was 17%. There is a need to run educational programs to increase parents' awareness of the risks of dental trauma and emphasize preventive measures. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Parents should be made aware of the widespread prevalence, risk factors, and consequences of trauma to primary dentition, so that they can seek appropriate care timely. The time elapsed between injury and dental care is of utmost importance.

The present study aimed to analyze the differences between maternal and paternal parenting stress and children's behavioral functioning, as determined by teacher and parent reports. In addition, it sought to evaluate the presence of clusters based on parenting stress and to determine whether perceptions of children's behavioral functioning varied across these clusters. The sample was composed of the parents and teachers of N = 201 children. Parents completed a self-report questionnaire on parenting stress and parents and teachers filled out report-form questionnaires assessing children's emotional and behavioral functioning. The results showed that mothers had higher levels of parenting stress than fathers, and both parents reported more prosocial behavior in children than did teachers. Furthermore, middle stressed parents had children who expressed more prosocial behavior than did parents in other clusters. The findings also showed that parenting stress influenced partners' perceptions of children's behavioral functioning. The multiplicity of child observers facilitated a better understanding of how parenting stress, linked to parent-child interactions, may play an important role in shaping parents' perceptions of their children.

Visual working memory (VWM) is reliably predictive of fluid intelligence and academic achievements. The objective of the current study was to investigate individual differences in pre-schoolers' VWM processing by examining the association between behaviour, brain function and parent-reported measures related to the child's environment. We used a portable functional near-infrared spectroscopy system to record from the frontal and parietal cortices of 4.5-year-old children (N = 74) as they completed a colour change-detection VWM task in their homes. Parents were asked to fill in questionnaires on temperament, academic aspirations, home environment and life stress. Children were median-split into a low-performing (LP) and a high-performing (HP) group based on the number of items they could successfully remember during the task. LPs increasingly activated channels in the left frontal and bilateral parietal cortices with increasing load, whereas HPs showed no difference in activation. Our findings suggest that LPs recruited more neural resources than HPs when their VWM capacity was challenged. We employed mediation analyses to examine the association between the difference in activation between the highest and lowest loads and variables from the questionnaires. The difference in activation between loads in the left parietal cortex partially mediated the association between parent-reported stressful life events and VWM performance. Critically, our findings show that the association between VWM capacity, left parietal activation and indicators of life stress is important to understand the nature of individual differences in VWM in pre-school children.
