BACKGROUND: Limited data regarding the correlation between oxidative balance score (OBS) and hyperuricemia highlights the necessity for thorough investigations. This study aims to examine the link between OBS, which incorporates dietary and lifestyle factors, and the occurrence of hyperuricemia. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 13,636 participants from the 2007-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The oxidative balance score (OBS) was determined based on four lifestyle factors and sixteen dietary nutrients. We assessed the levels of serum uric acid (SUA) and the occurrence of hyperuricemia as outcomes. Weighted logistic regression and linear models were used for statistical analysis, using Restricted Cubic Splines (RCS) to examine potential nonlinear associations. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity assessments were performed to identify any variations and ensure the robustness of the findings. RESULTS: Higher OBS was consistently correlated with decreased SUA levels and a reduced prevalence of hyperuricemia. RCS highlighted a significant negative nonlinear association, particularly in females. Subgroup analysis revealed gender-based differences and interactive correlation, providing additional insights regarding OBS and hyperuricemia relationship. CONCLUSION: This study underscores a robust negative correlation between OBS and SUA levels as well as the incidence of hyperuricemia, emphasizing the importance of dietary and lifestyle factors. Incorporating RCS, subgroup analysis, and sensitivity assessments enhances the depth of our findings, providing valuable insights for further research.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to explore the association and potential causality between polyunsaturated fatty acids concentrations and the risk of periodontal disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected from the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Weighted logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis were used to analyse the associations of the concentrations of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and the omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids ratio with the risk of periodontitis. E-value and propensity score matching (PSM) analyses were used for sensitivity analyses. In addition, two-sample Mendelian randomisation (MR) analyses were performed to assess the potential causal impact of the concentrations of those fatty acids on periodontitis risk. RESULTS: A total of 2462 participants from the NHANES were included. Logistic regression analysis revealed that high omega-3 fatty acids levels were negatively associated with the risk of developing periodontitis (P < 0.05), while the omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids ratio was positively associated with the risk of developing periodontitis (P < 0.05). There was no significant association between omega-6 concentrations and the risk of periodontitis. The findings mentioned above were confirmed by analysis following a 1:1 PSM. Furthermore, MR examination of the two samples indicated no possible causal link between the risk of periodontitis and the concentrations of omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids or the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Although omega-3 fatty acids and the omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids ratio were associated with the risk of periodontitis in cross-sectional studies, the MR results did not support a causal relationship between them. Therefore, there is no indication that an increase in the omega-3 fatty acids concentration or a decrease in the omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids ratio may be beneficial for preventing periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: As an innovative lipid parameter, NHHR (the ratio of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) can serve as a valuable tool for assessing cardiovascular disease risk. Nevertheless, the relationship between NHHR and the risk of kidney stones remains unexplored. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey utilized data from the National Health and Population Survey (NHANES) database in the United States spanning from 2007 to 2018. Distinct statistical analyses were applied, including weighted logistic regression, stratified and interaction analysis and restricted cubic spline curve (RCS) models, to examine the correlation between NHHR and the incidence of kidney stones. RESULTS: This analysis encompassed 24,664 participants, with 9.63% reporting incidents of kidney stones. Following multivariate logistic regression and comprehensive adjustments, participants in NHHR quartile 4 (OR 1.34; 95% CI 1.12, 1.60, P < 0.01) exhibited a significantly increased risk of kidney stones compared to those in NHHR quartile 1 (Q1). The RCS result further illustrated a non-linear correlation between NHHR and the incidence of kidney stones. The result of subgroup analysis manifested that participants without diabetes had a higher risk of kidney stones when measured high NHHR levels compared those with diabetes (p for interaction < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Elevated NHHR levels were found to be associated with an increased risk of kidney stones. Based on these findings, NHHR appears to be a promising predictive indicator for the occurrence of kidney stones.

The regulator of capsule synthesis (Rcs) is a complex signaling cascade that monitors gram-negative cell envelope integrity. The outer membrane (OM) lipoprotein RcsF is the sensory component, but how RcsF functions remains elusive. RcsF interacts with the ß-barrel assembly machinery (Bam) complex, which assembles RcsF in complex with OM proteins (OMPs), resulting in RcsF's partial cell surface exposure. Elucidating whether RcsF/Bam or RcsF/OMP interactions are important for its sensing function is challenging because the Bam complex is essential, and partial loss-of-function mutations broadly compromise the OM biogenesis. Our recent discovery that, in the absence of nonessential component BamE, RcsF inhibits function of the central component BamA provided a genetic tool to select mutations that specifically prevent RcsF/BamA interactions. We employed a high-throughput suppressor screen to isolate a collection of such rcsF and bamA mutants and characterized their impact on RcsF/OMP assembly and Rcs signaling. Using these mutants and BamA inhibitors MRL-494L and darobactin, we provide multiple lines of evidence against the model in which RcsF senses Bam complex function. We show that Rcs activation in bam mutants results from secondary OM and lipopolysaccharide defects and that RcsF/OMP assembly is required for this activation, supporting an active role of RcsF/OMP complexes in sensing OM stress.

Erwinia amylovora, the causal agent of fire blight disease, has become a serious threat to the pome fruit industry in Korea since 2015. In this study, we showed that two new isolates of E. amylovora, Ea17-2187 and Ea19-7, obtained from pear orchards in Anseong, Korea, exhibited unique pathogenicity compared with other isolates thus far. Both were nonpathogenic to immature apple fruits but occasionally caused disease on immature pear fruits at varying reduced rates. Bioinformatic analyses revealed that their genomes are highly similar to those of the type strains TS3128 and ATCC49946 but have different mutations in essential virulence regulatory genes. Ea17-2187 has a single nucleotide substitution in rcsC, which encodes the core components of the Rcs system that activates the exopolysaccharide amylovoran production. In contrast, Ea19-7 contains a single nucleotide insertion in hrpL, which encodes a master regulator of the type III secretion system. In both cases, the mutation can cause premature termination and production of truncated gene products, disrupting virulence regulation. Introduction of the nonmutated rcsC and hrpL genes into Ea17-2187 and Ea19-7, respectively, fully recovered pathogenicity, comparable with that of TS3128; hence, these mutations were responsible for the altered pathogenicity observed. Interestingly, virulence assays on immature pear fruits showed that the hrpL mutant of Ea19-7 was still pathogenic, although its virulence level was markedly reduced. Taken together, these results suggest that the two new isolates might act as opportunistic pathogens or cheaters and that some Korean isolates might have evolved to acquire alternative pathways for activating pathogenicity factors.

Frequency encoding chipless Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags have been frequently using the radar cross section (RCS) parameter to determine the resonant frequencies corresponding to the encoded information. Recent advancements in chipless RFID design have focused on the generation of multiple frequencies without considering the frequency position and signal amplitude. This article proposes a novel method for chipless RFID tag design, in which the RCS response can be located at an exact position, corresponding to the desired encoding signal spectrum. To achieve this, the empirical Taguchi method (TM), in combination with particle swarm optimization (PSO), is used to automatically search for optimal design parameters for chipless RFID tags with a fast response time, to comply with the frequency encoding requirements in the presence of the mutual coupling effect. The proposed design method is validated using I-slotted chipless tag structures that are fabricated and measured with different sets of resonant frequencies.

A graphene-based tunable polarization conversion metasurface (PCM) was designed and analyzed for the purpose of reducing the radar cross-section (RCS) of array antennas. The metasurface comprises periodic shuttle-shaped metal patches, square-patterned graphene, and inclined grating-patterned graphene. By adjusting the Fermi energy levels of the upper (µ1) and lower (µ2) graphene layers, different states were achieved. In State 1, with µ1 = 0 eV and µ2 = 0.5 eV, the polarization conversion ratio (PCR) exceeded 0.9 in the bandwidths of 1.65-2.19 THz and 2.29-2.45 THz. In State 2, with µ1 = µ2 = 0.5 eV, the PCR was greater than 0.9 in the 1.23-1.85 THz and 2.24-2.60 THz bands. In State 3, with µ1 = µ2 = 1 eV, the PCR exceeded 0.9 in the 2.56-2.75 THz and 3.73-4.05 THz bands. By integrating the PCM with the array antenna, tunable RCS reduction was obtained without affecting the basic radiation functionality of the antenna. In State 1, RCS reduction was greater than 10 dB in the 1.60-2.43 THz and 3.63-3.72 THz frequency ranges. In State 2, the RCS reduction exceeded 10 dB in the 2.07-2.53 THz, 2.78-2.98 THz, and 3.70-3.81 THz bands. In State 3, RCS reduction was greater than 10 dB in the 1.32-1.43 THz, 2.51-2.76 THz, and 3.76-4.13 THz frequency ranges. This polarization conversion metasurface shows significant potential for applications in switchable and tunable antenna RCS reduction.

Appearance-related comparisons (A-RCs) in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) are under researched despite their probable role in disorder maintenance. The present study therefore aimed to explore the nature (frequency, direction and automaticity), and functions of A-RCs in BDD. N = 43 including people with BDD (n = 23) and controls (n = 20) matched approximately on age and sex were recruited. A mixture of standardized and devised questionnaires on body image and A-RCs were completed. A-RCs were significantly more frequent, generally more upward (to more attractive standards of comparison), and more automatic in people with BDD relative to the control group. People with BDD also held significantly stronger agreement with beliefs about A-RCs as serving functions of: self-evaluation, self-improvement, self-enhancement, and in particular, self-loathing (a way to confirm beliefs about physical unattractiveness) and social threat management. This research presents evidence that the nature and functions of A-RCs in BDD have a role in this disorder's maintenance. Clinical implications, limitations, and future directions for research are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Although primary headaches are common disorders, there is little research on the possible relationship between primary headaches and oral health (decayed, missing, and filled teeth: DMFT). The present study aims to investigate the relationship between the DMFT index and primary headaches. METHOD: This descriptive study was performed on 8682 cases from the Rafsanjani cohort population based on the Rafsanjani cohort study (RCS) and Oral Health Branch of the Rafsanjan Cohort Study (OHBRCS). Episodic primary headache (EPH) and chronic primary headache (CPH) of RCS patients who participated in OHBRCS were studied according to their DMFT score in comparison to nonprimary headache patients. Demographic characteristics and risk factors were compared in different groups. We used crude and multiple logistic regression analyses in this study. RESULTS: The missing teeth were significantly higher in the CPH group than in the no CPH group (P < 0.001), and filled teeth were significantly higher in the EPH group than in the no EPH group (P < 0.001). In the crude model, there was a direct significant association between the prevalence of EPH and filled teeth total and > 5 filled teeth, and after adjusting for confounders, this relationship remained significant. The odds ratios of CPH were not associated with DMFT or its components in the adjusted models. CONCLUSION: Our study found a correlation between filled teeth and EPH cases, but no correlation between CPH and DMFT or its components.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) has become a global epidemic, and air pollution has been identified as a potential risk factor. This study aims to investigate the non-linear relationship between ambient air pollution and MASLD prevalence. METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, participants undergoing health checkups were assessed for three-year average air pollution exposure. MASLD diagnosis required hepatic steatosis with at least 1 out of 5 cardiometabolic criteria. A stepwise approach combining data visualization and regression modeling was used to determine the most appropriate link function between each of the six air pollutants and MASLD. A covariate-adjusted six-pollutant model was constructed accordingly. RESULTS: A total of 131,592 participants were included, with 40.6% met the criteria of MASLD. "Threshold link function," "interaction link function," and "restricted cubic spline (RCS) link functions" best-fitted associations between MASLD and PM2.5, PM10/CO, and O3 /SO2/NO2, respectively. In the six-pollutant model, significant positive associations were observed when pollutant concentrations were over: 34.64 µg/m3 for PM2.5, 57.93 µg/m3 for PM10, 56 µg/m3 for O3, below 643.6 µg/m3 for CO, and within 33 and 48 µg/m3 for NO2. The six-pollutant model using these best-fitted link functions demonstrated superior model fitting compared to exposure-categorized model or linear link function model assuming proportionality of odds. CONCLUSION: Non-linear associations were found between air pollutants and MASLD prevalence. PM2.5, PM10, O3, CO, and NO2 exhibited positive associations with MASLD in specific concentration ranges, highlighting the need to consider non-linear relationships in assessing the impact of air pollution on MASLD.

AIM: The aim of this present study was to compare the dislodgement resistance of calcium silicate-based sealer, zinc oxide sealer, and a new sealer combining both zinc oxide and calcium silicate-based sealer in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 60 single-rooted human teeth were instrumented with F3 Protaper Gold. All endodontic canals were filled using gutta percha cones using the cold lateral condensation technique in combination using one of the mentioned sealers (n = 20 per group). The teeth were divided into three groups: group A consisted of Sealite® Ultra, group B consisted of K-Sealer®, and group C consisted of BioRoot® RC. After 2 months of incubation (37°C, 100% humidity) and after cutting out 2 mm from the most apical portion of the root apex, six slices of 1 mm thickness were generated. Mechanical dislodgement resistance was examined using a universal pressure-testing machine and the push-out bond strength (POBS) was calculated. Specimens were examined under 20× magnification to define the bond failure mode. Statistical analysis was executed using ANOVA, post hoc Turkey test for pairwise comparisons and Kruskal-Wallis tests. RESULTS: The POBS of BioRoot® was significantly higher than the POBS of the two other sealers with a mean of 10.54 MPa ± 2.10 and 5.73 MPa ± 2.34, respectively (p < 0.001). Sealite® and K-Sealer® showed similar results in the median and coronal part. K-Sealer® revealed highest POBS compared with Sealite® in the apical part (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The POBS of the zinc oxide and calcium silicate-based sealer was significantly lower compared with calcium silicate. Sealite® and K-Sealer® exhibited almost same results. BioRoot showed the highest POBS of all sealers. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The current study was needed to evaluate the bond strength of three different cements to dentinal walls, by evaluating their respective POBS in vitro. The findings of this study may provide guidance for the clinician in the selection of an adequate endodontic sealer that guarantees an enhanced adhesive seal between the Gutta-percha and the dentinal canal walls. Bacterial persistence to antibiotics defines the ability of small sub-populations of sensitive cells within an isogenic population to survive high doses of bactericidal antibiotics. Here, we investigated the importance of the five main envelope stress responses (ESRs) of Escherichia coli in persistence to five bactericidal ß-lactam antibiotics by combining classical time-kill curve experiments and single-cell analysis using time-lapse microscopy. We showed that the survival frequency of mutants for the Bae, Cpx, Psp, and Rcs systems treated with different ß-lactams is comparable to that of the wild-type strain, indicating that these ESRs do not play a direct role in persistence to ß-lactams. Since the σE-encoding gene is essential, we could not directly test its role. Using fluorescent reporters to monitor the activation of ESRs, we observed that σE is induced by high doses of meropenem. However, the dynamics of σE activation during meropenem treatment did not reveal any difference in persister cells compared to the bulk of the population, indicating that σE activation is not a hallmark of persistence. The Bae, Cpx, Psp, and Rcs responses were neither induced by ampicillin nor by meropenem. However, pre-induction of the Rcs system by polymyxin B increased survival to meropenem in an Rcs-dependent manner, suggesting that this ESR might confer some yet uncharacterized advantages during meropenem treatment or at the post-antibiotic recovery step. Altogether, our data suggest that ESRs are not key actors in E. coli persistence to ß-lactams in the conditions we tested.

High-performance electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers are essential for addressing electromagnetic pollution and military security. However, challenges remain in realizing cost-effectiveness and modulating absorbing properties. In this study, heterogeneous Co/nanoporous carbon (NPC) nano-islands are prepared by efficient method co-precipitation combined with in situ pyrolysis. The multi-regulation strategy of morphology, graphitization, and defect density is achieved by modulating the pyrolysis temperature. Adjusting the pyrolysis temperature can effectively balance the conductivity and defect density, optimizing the impedance matching and enhancing the attenuation. Furthermore, it facilitates obtaining the appropriate shape and size of Co magnetic nanoparticles (Co-MNPs), triggering strong surface plasmon resonance. This resonance, in turn, bolsters the synergy of dielectric and magnetic loss. The incorporation of porous nanostructures not only optimizes impedance matching and enhances multiple reflections but also improves interfacial polarization. Additionally, the presence of enriched defects and heteroatom doping significantly enhances dipole polarization. Notably, the absorber exhibits an impressive minimum reflection loss (RLmin ) of -73.87 dB and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EABmax ) of 6.64 GHz. The combination of efficient fabrication methods, a performance regulation strategy through pyrolysis temperature modulation, and radar cross section (RCS) simulation provides a high-performance EMW absorber and can pave the way for large-scale applications.

Reactive carbonyl species (RCS) derived from lipid peroxides can act as critical damage or signaling mediators downstream of reactive oxygen species by modifying target proteins. However, their biological effects and underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown in plants. Here, we have uncovered the mechanism by which the RCS 4-hydroxy-(E)-2-nonenal (HNE) participates in photosystem II (PSII) repair cycle of chloroplasts, a crucial process for maintaining PSII activity under high and changing light conditions. High Light Sensitive 1 (HLT1) is a potential NADPH-dependent reductase in chloroplasts. Deficiency of HLT1 had no impact on the growth of Arabidopsis plants under normal light conditions but increased sensitivity to high light, which resulted from a defective PSII repair cycle. In hlt1 plants, the accumulation of HNE-modified D1 subunit of PSII was observed, which did not affect D1 degradation but hampered the dimerization of repaired PSII monomers and reassembly of PSII supercomplexes on grana stacks. HLT1 is conserved in all photosynthetic organisms and has functions in overall growth and plant fitness in both Arabidopsis and rice under naturally challenging field conditions. Our work provides the mechanistic basis underlying RCS scavenging in light acclimation and suggests a potential strategy to improve plant productivity by manipulating RCS signaling in chloroplasts.

Escherichia coli cell envelope is crucial for stress sensing and signal transduction, mediated by numerous protein-protein interactions to enable adaptation and survival. Interfering with these interactions might affect envelope integrity leading to bacterial death. The outer membrane lipoprotein (RcsF) is the stress sensor of the regulator of capsule synthesis (Rcs) phosphorelay that senses envelope threats. RcsF interacts with two essential proteins, IgaA (repressing the Rcs system) and BamA (inserting ß-barrel proteins in the outer membrane). Disturbing RcsF interactions may alter Rcs signaling and/or membrane integrity thus affecting bacterial survival. Here, we derived the sequence of a peptide mimicking RcsF (RcsFmim), based on the in silico docking of RcsF with IgaA. Expression of rcsFmim caused 3-to-4-fold activation of the Rcs system and perturbation of the outer membrane. Both effects result in decreased E. coli growth rate. We anticipate that RcsFmim present a candidate for future antibacterial peptide development.

Both metabolic syndrome (MetS) and stroke are associated with increased risk of mortality. Here, we aimed to assess the prevalence of MetS among adults using three definitions (Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP-III), International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and IDF ethnic specific cut-off for Iranian criteria) and its association with stroke. We performed a cross-sectional study of a total of 9991 adult participants of Rafsanjan Cohort Study (RCS), as part of the Prospective epidemiological research studies in Iran (PERSIAN cohort study). The MetS prevalence was evaluated in participants according to the different criteria. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the association between three definitions of MetS with stroke. We found that MetS was significantly associated with higher odds of stroke according to NCEP-ATP III (odds ratio (OR): 1.89, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.30-2.74), international IDF (OR:1.66, 95% CI: 1.15-2.40) and Iranian IDF (OR:1.48, 95% CI: 1.04-2.09) after adjusted for variables confounders. Furthermore, after adjustment, in receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, the AUROC was 0.79 (95% CI = 0.75-0.82), 0.78(95% CI = 0.74-0.82) and 0.78(95% CI = 0.74-0.81) for presence of MetS according to NCEP-ATP III, international IDF and Iranian IDF, respectively. ROC analyses revealed that all of these three criteria for MetS are "moderately accurate" for the identification of increased stroke risk.In conclusion, our results showed that MetS was associated with increased odds of stroke. Our findings implicate the importance of early identification, treatment, and ultimately prevention of the metabolic syndrome.

Retinal degeneration (RD) is recognized as a frequent cause of visual impairments, including inherited (Retinitis pigmentosa) and degenerative (age-related macular) eye diseases. Dental stem cells (DSCs) have recently demonstrated a promising neuroprotection potential for ocular diseases through a paracrine manner carried out by extracellular vesicles (EVs). However, effective isolation of EVs is still challenging, and isolation methods determine the composition of enriched EVs and the subsequent biological and functional effects. In the present study, we assessed two enrichment methods (micro-electromechanical systems and ultrafiltration) to isolate the EVs from stem cells from apical papilla (SCAP). The size distribution of the corresponding isolates exhibited the capability of each method to enrich different subsets of EVs, which significantly impacts their biological and functional effects. We confirmed the neuroprotection and anti-inflammatory capacity of the SCAP-EVs in vitro. Further experiments revealed the possible therapeutic effects of subretinal injection of SCAP-EVs in the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) rat model. We found that EVs enriched by the micro-electromechanical-based device (MEMS-EVs) preserved visual function, reduced retinal cell apoptosis, and prevented thinning of the outer nuclear layer (ONL). Interestingly, the effect of MEMS-EVs was extended to the retinal ganglion cell/retinal nerve fiber layer (GCL/RNFL). This study supports the use of the microfluidics approach to enrich valuable subsets of EVs, together with the choice of SCAP as a source to derive EVs for cell-free therapy of RD.

Traditional stealth technologies all have their problems such as high cost and large thickness. To solve the problems, we used novelty checkerboard metasurface in stealth technology. Checkerboard metasurface does not have as high conversion efficiency as radiation converters, but it has many advantages such as small thickness and low cost. So it is expected to overcome the problems of traditional stealth technologies. Unlike other checkerboard metasurfaces, we improved it further by using two types of polarization converter units to be arranged in turn to form a hybrid checkerboard metasurface. Because the checkerboard metasurface composed of one type of polarization converter units can have a relatively wide radar cross-section (RCS) reduction in bandwidth when two types of polarization converter units are arranged in turn to form a hybrid checkerboard metasurface and mutual compensation of the two polarization converter units can broaden RCS reduction band further. Therefore, by designing the metasurface to be independent from the polarization, the effect of RCS reduction can be insensitive to the polarization of the incoming EM waves. The experiment and simulation results showed the value of this proposed hybrid checkerboard metasurface for RCS reduction. Mutual compensation of the units is a new attempt in the field of checkerboard metasurfaces for stealth technology and proved to be effective.

Surface conductivity is one of the key factors in judging whether the RCS (Radar Cross Section) test model is qualified, but the accuracy of traditional detection methods is insufficient. Furthermore, the resistance between two points obtained by traditional methods cannot be directly applied to the electromagnetic simulation analysis of the test model. In this paper, the theoretical model of the relationship between resistivity and resistance between two points on the model surface is proposed. The simulation method for the resistance between two points on the model surface is established. The advantage of the method proposed in this paper compared with the traditional method in detecting the surface resistance of the model is demonstrated intuitively. The experiments are carried out on ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) conductive films with several dimensions and resistivity. Results show that the measured resistance between two points on the model surface is highly consistent with the theoretical and simulated values. Moreover, the comparison of experiments shows that the measurement error of the traditional method is 150% to 200% higher than that of the method proposed in this paper.

Chipless radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is expected to replace barcode technology due to its ability to read in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) situations, long reading range, and low cost. Currently, there is extensive research being conducted on frequency-coded (FC) co-polarized radar cross-section (RCS)-based tags, which are widely used. However, detecting co-polarized chipless RFID tags in cluttered environments is still a challenge, as confirmed by measuring two co-polarized tags in front of a perfect metal reflector (30.5cm×22.5cm). To address this challenge, a realistic mathematical model for a chipless RFID system has been developed that takes into account the characteristics of the reader and the tag, as well as reflections from cluttered objects. This extensive mathematical model developed for linear chipless RFID systems in clutter scenarios holds the potential to greatly assist researchers in their exploration of RCS-based tags. By relying solely on simulations, this model provides a tool to effectively analyze and understand RCS-based tags, ultimately simplifying the process of generating more authentic tag designs. This model has been simulated and verified with measurement results by placing a single flat metal reflector behind two co-polarized one-bit designs: a dipole array tag and a square patch tag. The results showed that the interfering signal completely overlaps the ID of the co-polarized tag, severely limiting its detectability. To solve this issue, the proposed solution involves reading the tag in cross-polarization mode by etching a diagonal slot in the square patch tag. This proposed tag provides high immunity to the environment and can be detected in front of both dielectric and metallic objects.
