RESUMO

Mallomonas thrive primarily in freshwaters and dominate plankton communities, especially in oligotrophic waters. The cells have a siliceous cell covering of regularly arranged scales. Despite their ecological importance, the intricate structure and evolutionary significance of their silica scales are still unexplored. We investigated the nanopatterns on the scales and hypothesized that they may play a role in UV shielding. UVA and UVB exposure experiments were performed with 20 Mallomonas species, categorized into four groups based on the nanopattern of the scales (plain-scaled, meshed, striated, and papilliferous group); a fifth group consisted of the species that have extremely thick, robust scales regardless of the nanopattern. We revealed that thick scales were associated with enhanced UVB resistance, suggesting a protective role. No significant differences in UVA response were observed among the groups, except for the meshed group, which showed lower resistance, likely due to the less regular pattern on the shield. In conclusion, the scale case, composed of sufficiently silicified scales, provides effective UV protection in freshwater environments, regardless of the particular nanopattern. In increased UVB radiation, the thickness of the scales plays role. Contrary to expectations, cell size and phylogeny do not strongly predict UV resistance. The study highlights the diverse UV responses of Mallomonas, but further studies are needed to understand the role of scales/nanopatterns in the ecological adaptations of the species.

RESUMO

This paper is devoted to the study of the flora of silica-scaled chrysophytes in water bodies of the steppe zone of the Southern Urals (Russia). Twenty-four taxa were identified via scanning and transmission electron microscopy, twenty of which are representatives of the genus Mallomonas Perty, while four are species of the genus Synura Ehrenberg. In the course of the study, a species new to science from the genus Mallomonas, M. baturinae sp. nov., was described. This species belongs to the section Papillosae. The stomatocyst of M. doignonii was described. For the first time in Russia and for the third time since description, M. phasma and M. solea-ferrea var. irregularis were reported in the studied area. Here, their extended description is provided with illustrations of their scales in detail. Some rare taxa for the flora of Russia have been identified: M. doignonii, M. pillula f. exannulata, and M. pillula f. valdiviana. One taxon of the genus Mallomonas has not been identified to a species level and is probably a taxon new to science.

Hydroelectric dams create new ecosystems such as reservoirs. Several hydroelectric dams forming shallow reservoirs were built on the Angara River flowing out of Lake Baikal. The first of them in downstream Angara is Irkutsk Reservoir, with several shallow bays. Since silica-scaled chrysophytes are effective bioindicators for aquatic ecosystems, this paper aimed to determine their distribution, taxonomic structure and species richness in South Baikal and Irkutsk Reservoir, which have different environmental parameters. Thirty-one species were found using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Only seven of them inhabited South Baikal in June 2023 at 3.66-4.51 °C and pH 7.80-8.24, with Chrysosphaerella baicalensis, Spiniferomonas trioralis f. cuspidata and Mallomonas alpina being prevalent. Only one species (M. alpina) was dominant in Irkutsk Reservoir at all stations at a water temperature of 5.33-11.55 °C and pH 8.10-8.52, alongside three other abundant species, Synura cf. glabra, Mallomonas acaroides and M. crassisquama. The maximum number of species (23) was found in a shallow bay of the reservoir at maximal values of temperature (11.5 °C) and pH (8.57) and minimal values of phosphate and nitrate concentrations during the study. The enrichment of Irkutsk Reservoir in species of silica-scaled chrysophytes was due both to cosmopolitan widespread and polyzonal species as well as to rare boreal, arctic-boreal, and unknown, possibly new species.

Meromictic Crawford Lake, located in SW Ontario, Canada is characterized by varved sediments, making it suitable for high-resolution paleoecological studies. Freeze cores, the only coring method available that reliably preserves the fragile laminations representative of seasonal deposition in the lake, were used to document siliceous diatom and chrysophyte community structure at an annual resolution from 1930-1990CE. Stratigraphically constrained cluster analysis identified major assemblage changes that are believed to have been caused by local, regional and possibly global anthropogenic impacts. The assemblage changes within the siliceous algae are attributed to regional weather and increased industrial emissions and related effects of acid deposition on the lake's catchment associated with the Great Acceleration -the massive economic, industrial, and demographic expansion beginning in the mid-20th century. Observed increases in spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCPs) in varved lake sediment dating to the early 1950s record rapidly expanding steel production without emission controls around 30 km upwind of the lake. The findings reported here reflect major changes in earth systems that the Anthropocene Working Group recommends for a proposed epoch to be termed the Anthropocene, providing support for the laminated sediments from Crawford Lake as a potential Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP).

The present paper focuses on the silica-scaled chrysophytes from two tropical islands: Con Son (Con Dao Archipelago) and Phu Quoc, located in Viet Nam. Electron microscopy revealed fifty-seven taxa, of which forty-one belong to the genus Mallomonas. The others are species of the genera Synura (5), Paraphysomonas (8), Spiniferomonas (1), Chrysosphaerella (1) and Lepidochromonas (1). This is the first report of the genus Lepidochromonas from Viet Nam. In addition, two species from the genus Paraphysomonas are reported for the first time in the country. Six taxa from the genus Mallomonas and five taxa from the genus Paraphysomonas were not identifiable to the lower rank and may represent new species for science. The overall diversity of the silica-scaled chrysophytes of the islands is very high. A number of rare taxa endemic to Southeast Asia were found.
