PURPOSE: Relationships between body weight, urine color (Uc), and thirst level (WUT) have been proposed as a simple and inexpensive self-assessment method to predict dehydration. This study aimed to determine if this method also allowed us to accurately identify a low vs. high urine concentration in (tactical) athletes. METHODS: A total of n = 19 Army Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets and club sports athletes (22.7 ± 3.8 years old, of which 13 male) were included in the analysis, providing morning body weight, thirst sensation, and Uc for five consecutive days. Each item received a score 0 or 1, resulting in a WUT score ranging from 0 (likely hydrated) to 3 (very likely dehydrated). WUT model and individual item outcomes were then compared with a ≥ 1.020 urine specific gravity (USG) cut-off indicating a high urine concentration, using descriptive comparisons, generalized linear mixed models, and logistic regression (to calculate the area under the curve (AUC)). RESULTS: WUT score was not significantly predictive of urine concentration, z = 1.59, p = 0.11. The AUC ranged from 0.54 to 0.77 for test days, suggesting a fair AUC on most days. Only Uc was significantly related to urine concentration, z = 2.49, p = 0.01. The accuracy of the WUT model for correctly classifying urine samples with a high concentration was 68% vs. 51% of samples with a low concentration, resulting in an average accuracy of 61%. CONCLUSION: This study shows that WUT scores were not predictive of urine concentration, and the method did not substantially outperform the accuracy of Uc scoring alone.

OBJECTIVE: Farmworkers are at increased risk of adverse health outcomes related to occupational heat exposure and inadequate access to water, shade, or rest breaks. Presently, there is a dearth of studies examining the prevalence of dehydration and related factors in U.S. farmworkers. Our objectives were to characterize hydration status during typical workdays and to identify risk factors associated with increased dehydration in migrant farmworkers employed in Florida. METHODS: Urine samples were collected and analyzed for urine specific gravity (USG) 2-3 times per person per day over five days in May 2021 and 2022. Data collection included demographic characteristics, wet-bulb-globe-temperature (WBGT), and information on working conditions (task type, duration, and crop units harvested), fluid intake, clothing worn, and heat safety behaviors. Multivariable mixed regression models were used to evaluate risk factors associated with change in USG levels (continuous) during a work shift. RESULTS: A total of 111 farmworkers participated in this study providing 1020 cumulative USG measurements, of which 96.8% of end-of-shift USG samples were above 1.020 indicating potential dehydration. In multivariable models, dehydration assessed using change in USG levels significantly declined with age (ß = -0.078; 95%CI: 0.150, -0.006) but showed significant increase with body mass index (ß = 0.016; 95%CI: 0.003, 0.028), WGBT (ß = 0.054; 95%CI:0.044, 0.064), mean shift duration, and state of primary residence. We did not find significant associations of dehydration with type of clothing worn, intake of employer-provided water, or crop units harvested during a shift in this sample of farmworkers. CONCLUSION: Our findings underscore the need for additional research to evaluate adverse outcomes related to dehydration and to better understand recovery patterns from chronic dehydration across workweeks and harvest seasons in migrant farmworkers.

Urine output and urinary urea-N excretion (UUNe) excretion are critical measures to accurately evaluate N metabolism in lactating dairy cows and environmental concerns related to manure N. The objectives of this study were: (a) to compare estimates of UUNe, urine output, and related variables from 3 pre-established measurement protocols (bladder catheterization, external collection cup, and spot sampling) and from dietary salt supplementation, (b) to study temporal variation in UUNe, urine output, and related variables as affected by measurement protocol, and (c) to evaluate urine specific gravity as a predictor of urine output. Twelve multiparous Holstein cows were used in a split-plot, Latin square design. Cows were randomly assigned to a diet (main plot) containing either 0.7 or 1.6% NaCl (dry matter basis) and then assigned to a sequence of 3 protocols (sub-plot) in a balanced 3 × 3 Latin square with 14-d period. For each protocol, measurements were conducted every 4 h for 3 consecutive days. Urine output was determined gravimetrically for bladder catheterization and external collection cup or based on measured cow body weight, measured urinary creatinine concentration, and the assumed creatinine excretion of 29 mg/kg body weight per d for spot sampling. Urine specific gravity was measured by refractometry. When averaged over a 3-d measurement period and compared with bladder catheterization, spot sampling underestimated urine output (6.8 kg/d; 20%) and UUNe (26 g/d; 13%) but exhibited greater concentration of urinary urea-N (+58 mg/dL; 10%). There were no differences in any measurements determined via bladder catheterization or external cup device protocols, except for urine output that tended to be 3.7 kg/d lower for collection cup compared with bladder catheterization. The 2 gravimetric protocols yielded lower urinary creatinine concentration than spot sampling (64.7 vs. 88.1 mg/dL) and lower creatinine excretion (25.3 mg/kg of body weight per d) than the value of 29 mg/kg of body weight per d generally assumed in the spot sampling protocol. Salt supplementation tended to increase urine output (+5.2 kg/d) and decrease urinary urea-N concentration (-93 mg/dL), urinary creatinine concentration (-9.5 mg/dL), milk protein concentration (-0.19 percentage unit) and milk protein yield (-70 g/d). There was greater temporal variation of urine output when measured via the collection cup compared with bladder catheterization in the first 2 d but not the third day of sampling, suggesting that an extended period of adaptation might have improved data quality of the collection cup protocol. The R2 of the linear regression to predict urine output with urine specific gravity was 67, 73, and 32% for bladder catheterization, collection cup, and spot sampling, respectively. In this study, spot sampling underestimated both urine output and UUNe, but UUNe determination did not differ between external collection cup and bladder catheterization. However, our data suggested the need to investigate the adaptation protocol, required days of measurements and the conversion of urine mass to urine volume to improve accuracy and precision of urine collection protocols.

BACKGROUND: Urinalysis is a rapid, non-invasive method used to obtain diagnostic information on primates. While several studies have investigated dipstick and specific gravity values in chimpanzees, urine sediment analysis is often excluded. Crystalluria, observed during urine sediment analysis, can be benign or indicate renal pathologies. METHODS: In total, 665 urine samples from sanctuary-housed chimpanzees were analyzed over the course of 17 months for pH, specific gravity, time of collection, and crystalluria. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Calcium salt crystalluria was seen in 9.0% of the samples from 23.7% of the individuals in the study. Urinary pH and specific gravity were significantly higher in samples with crystalluria than in those lacking crystalluria, while time of collection did not differ between the two groups. While diet is the most likely cause of the crystalluria in this population, several medications could also cause urinary crystallization. Further exploration of the significance of calcium salt crystalluria in chimpanzees is warranted.

BACKGROUND: To determine whether urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL) might be superior to pyuria for detecting urinary tract infection (UTI) regardless of urine specific gravity (SG) in young children. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of children aged < 3 years who were evaluated for UTI with urinalysis, urine culture, and uNGAL measurements during a 5-year period. Sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratios (LRs), predictive values (PVs), area under the curves (AUCs) of uNGAL cut-off levels, and various microscopic pyuria thresholds for detecting UTI were calculated for dilute (SG < 1.015) and concentrated urine (SG ≥ 1.015). RESULTS: Of 456 children included, 218 had UTI. The diagnostic value of urine white blood cell (WBC) concentration to define UTI changed with urine SG. For detecting UTI, uNGAL cut-off of 68.4 ng/mL had higher AUC values than pyuria ≥ 5 WBCs/high power field (HPF) for dilute and concentrated urine samples (both P < 0.05). Positive LR and PV and specificity of uNGAL were all greater than those of pyuria ≥ 5 WBCs/HPF regardless of urine SG, although the sensitivity of pyuria ≥ 5 WBCs/HPF was higher than that of uNGAL cut-off for dilute urine (93.8% vs. 83.5%) (P < 0.05). At uNGAL ≥ 68.4 ng/mL and ≥ 5 WBCs/HPF, posttest probabilities of UTI were 68.8% and 57.5% for dilute urine and 73.4% and 57.3% for concentrated urine, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Urine SG can affect the diagnostic performance of pyuria for detecting UTI and uNGAL might be helpful for identifying UTI regardless of urine SG in young children. This study aimed to investigate the sex differences in short-term weight change and hydration status in judo athletes. Thirty-five men and 15 women judo athletes voluntarily participated in this descriptive and repeated measures design study. Body mass, urine-specific gravity (USG), and body composition of the athletes were measured at the official weigh-in and the competition day's morning. Body mass of the athletes increased during recovery time between official weigh-in and before the competition (time factor; F1-48 = 71.81, p < 0.001), this increase was higher in men athletes compared to women athletes (time-sex interaction; F1-48 = 6.56, p = 0.01). With RWG, USG values of the women and men athletes decreased (time factor; F1-48 = 8.53, p = 0.005). However, most of the athletes were still in significant or serious dehydration state. Unchanged values of total body water rates (TBW) supported dehydration in athletes before the competition (time factor, F1-48 = 2.9, p = 0.091; time-sex interaction; F1-48= 2.4, p = 0.122). The findings of the study indicated that RWG was higher in men athletes compared to women athletes, but hydration status was not affected by sex factor.Notwithstanding 15 hours of recovery between official weigh-in and the start of the competition, judo athletes were still in dehydrated state despite remaining within the limit set for RWG.

BACKGROUND: Video endoscopy, which remains the diagnostic gold standard after ingestion of a corrosive substance, is performed under general anesthesia in children, requires advanced technology, and is costly. Simple and accessible methods are therefore needed to determine the need for endoscopy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of the pH and specific gravity of ingested substance in determining endoscopy indications after corrosive ingestion. METHODS: This prospective study included pediatric patients who presented after ingesting a corrosive substance from June 2018 to June 2019. Relationships between the extent of damage detected by endoscopy and the patient's age, physical examination findings, and the pH and specific gravity of the causative substance were evaluated. RESULTS: The degree of damage detected on endoscopy was significantly milder for corrosive substances with a pH between 2 and 12 (P = 0.003). In addition, pH values between 2 and 12 were significantly more common among patients without physical examination findings (P = 0.029). Specific gravity less than 1,005 was associated with mild injury detected by video-endoscopy (P = 0.011). Patients in whom severe injury was detected by endoscopy had marked findings on physical examination (P < 0.001). There was no significant relationship between physical examination findings and the specific gravity of the substance involved (P = 0.087). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that conservative treatment options can be used without performing endoscopy in patients who have no physical examination finding after corrosive ingestion and where the pH of the substances is between 2 and 12 and the specific gravity of the substances is less than 1,005.

This paper presents a Brix sensor based on the differential pressure measurement principle. Two piezoresistive silicon pressure sensors were applied to measure the specific gravity of the liquid, which was used to calculate the Brix level. The pressure sensors were mounted inside custom-built water-tight housings connected together by fixed length metallic tubes containing the power and signal cables. Two designs of the sensor were prepared; one for the basic laboratory testing and validation of the proposed system and the other for a fermentation experiment. For lab tests, a sugar solution with different Brix levels was used and readings from the proposed sensor were compared with a commercially available hydrometer called Tilt. During the fermentation experiments, fermentation was carried out in a 1000 L tank over 7 days and data was recorded and analysed. In the lab experiments, a good linear relationship between the sugar content and the corresponding Brix levels was observed. In the fermentation experiment, the sensor performed as expected but some problems such as residue build up were encountered. Overall, the proposed sensing solution carries a great potential for continuous monitoring of the Brix level in liquids. Due to the usage of low-cost pressure sensors and the interface electronics, the cost of the system is considered suitable for large scale deployment at wineries or juice processing industries.

BACKGROUND: Tuber shape and specific gravity (dry matter) are important agronomic traits in potato processing and impact production costs, quality, and consistency of the final processed food products such as French fries and potato chips. In this study, linkage and QTL mapping were performed for these two traits to allow for the implementation of marker-assisted selection to facilitate breeding efforts in the russet market class. Two parents, Rio Grande Russet (female) and Premier Russet (male) and their 205 F1 progenies were initially phenotyped for tuber shape and specific gravity in field trials conducted in Idaho and North Carolina in 2010 and 2011, with specific gravity also being measured in Minnesota in 2011. Progenies and parents were previously genotyped using the Illumina SolCAP Infinium 8303 Potato SNP array, with ClusterCall and MAPpoly (R-packages) subsequently used for autotetraploid SNP calling and linkage mapping in this study. The 12 complete linkage groups and phenotypic data were then imported into QTLpoly, an R-package designed for polyploid QTL analyses. RESULTS: Significant QTL for tuber shape were detected on chromosomes 4, 7, and 10, with heritability estimates ranging from 0.09 to 0.36. Significant tuber shape QTL on chromosomes 4 and 7 were specific to Idaho and North Carolina environments, respectively, whereas the QTL on chromosome 10 was significant regardless of growing environment. Single marker analyses identified alleles in the parents associated with QTL on chromosomes 4, 7, and 10 that contributed to significant differences in tuber shape among progenies. Significant QTL were also identified for specific gravity on chromosomes 1 and 5 with heritability ranging from 0.12 to 0.21 and were reflected across environments. CONCLUSION: Fully automated linkage mapping and QTL analysis were conducted to identify significant QTL for tuber shape and dry matter in a tetraploid mapping population representing the russet market class. The findings are important for the development of molecular markers useful to potato breeders for marker-assisted selection for the long tuber shape and acceptable dry matter required by the potato industry within this important market class.

BACKGROUND AIMS: CD34+ cell count of hematopoietic progenitor cell products is often first determined using a product sample, with the final reported cell count obtained by multiplying cell count from the sample by the total product volume. Product volume may be determined by apheresis instruments used for collection or calculated based on specific gravity (SG). Here the authors sought to determine the discrepancies between these methods and the impact on patient care. METHODS: A total of 262 products collected from 176 donors by apheresis were retrospectively reviewed. Volumes calculated by apheresis instruments were compared with volumes calculated based on SG. CD34+ cell/kg doses based on volumes from apheresis instruments and SG were also compared. Furthermore, among 42 patients who required multiple collections, the authors determined whether different calculation methods would have changed the number of procedures required. RESULTS: The volumes for 253 products (96.6%) and CD34+ cell/kg doses for 257 products (98.1%) generated from apheresis instruments and SG were similar. Products with discrepant volumes when calculated using different methods were not associated with delayed engraftment. Forty patients who underwent multiple collections (95.2%) were under their collection goals during their first collection and would have required multiple procedures regardless of which method was used to calculate product volumes. CONCLUSIONS: Volumes determined based on SG did not provide a clear benefit over volumes determined by apheresis instruments. Hence, variation in volume calculation methods across different laboratories is likely to lead to minimal impact on patient care.

Dogs are exceptionally well adapted to life close to humans, and alterations in their endocrine system during the domestication process may be an underlying mechanism. In particular, it has been suggested that low circulating cortisol concentrations in conjunction with simultaneously high oxytocin concentrations may have resulted in dogs' increased docility ('selection for tameness' hypothesis) and heightened propensity to interact and form relationships with humans ('hypersociability' hypothesis) compared to wolves. To investigate this, we analyzed cortisol and oxytocin metabolite concentrations from urine samples of hand-raised, pack-living domestic dogs and their non-domestic relatives, grey wolves. Based on the hypotheses outlined above, we predicted lower cortisol but higher oxytocin concentrations in dogs than wolves. In contrast to our prediction, we found higher cortisol concentrations in dogs than wolves. However, oxytocin concentrations were higher in dogs compared to wolves although the effect was relatively small. Indeed, male dogs had the highest oxytocin concentrations while female dogs' oxytocin concentrations were comparable to wolves'. Feeding status, reproductive phase, and conspecific social interactions also significantly affected cortisol and oxytocin concentrations. Furthermore, we compared two methods of correcting for variable water content of urine samples. We discuss our results in light of physiological and behavioral changes during domestication and highlight the importance of accounting for confounding variables in future studies.

PURPOSE: To provide a new and efficient at-the-toilet-bowl method of self-assessing urine concentration via urine color (Uc) to identify hypohydration. METHODS: A large athletic population (n = 189) delivered a urine sample, then chose a color panel that was displayed on the back wall of the lavatory stall. Selection was based on duration of urine voiding time, so that for a short-duration, the lighter panel was selected; for a mid-duration, the mid color panel; and for a longer-void-duration, the darker panel was selected. Then, subjects noted if their urine was lighter than, similar to, or darker than the selected color panel. Trained investigators also rated subjects' urine samples. To assess validity of Uc classification, the outcome was compared with a urine concentration (urine specific gravity, USG, and urine osmolality) threshold indicating hypohydration. RESULTS: Urine color was scored similarly by subjects and investigators (P = 0.99). Based on receiver operating curves (ROC), the method scored fair, i.e., the area under the curve ranging 0.73-0.82, with an accuracy of participants and investigators correctly classifying 72% and 75% urine samples compared to a USG threshold of 1.020, respectively, and 62% and 70% compared to a urine osmolality threshold of 836 mmol·kg-1, respectively. CONCLUSION: This new lavatory urine color (LUC) method of scoring Uc levels to assess potential hypohydration gives results similar to those of traditional urine color charts, but it has the advantage of an immediate assessment of hydration status based on scoring urine color directly from the toilet bowl.

PURPOSE: Growing evidence suggests hydration plays a role in metabolic dysfunction, however data in humans are scarce. This study examined the cross-sectional association between hydration and metabolic dysfunction in a representative sample of the US population. METHODS: Data from 3961 adult NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) participants (49.8% female; age 46.3 ± 0.5 years) were grouped by quartile of urine specific gravity (USG, 2007-2008 cohort) or urine osmolality (UOsm, 2009-2010 cohort) as measures of hydration. Metabolic dysfunction was assessed by glycemic and insulinemic endpoints and by components of the metabolic syndrome. Multivariate-adjusted linear and logistic regression models were used. RESULTS: Increasing quartiles of USG but not UOsm was associated with higher fasting plasma glucose (FPG), glycated hemoglobin (all P < 0.01), HOMA-IR and elevated insulin (all P < 0.05). Compared with the lowest quartile, those with the highest USG but not UOsm had greater risk of metabolic syndrome (Q4 vs. Q1, OR (99% CI): 1.6 (1.0, 2.7), P = 0.01) and diabetes (Q4 vs. Q1, OR: 1.8 (1.0, 3.4), P < 0.05). Additionally, those with USG > 1.013 or UOsm > 500 mOsm/kg, common cut-off values for optimal hydration based on retrospective analyses of existing data, had less favorable metabolic markers. In a subset of participants free from diabetes mellitus, impaired kidney function, hypertension and diuretic medication, USG remained positively associated with FPG (P < 0.01) and elevated FPG (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: These analyses provide population-based evidence that USG as a proxy for hydration is associated with glucose homeostasis in NHANES 2007-2008. The same association was not significant when UOsm was used as a proxy for hydration in the 2009-2010 wave. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRY: Not applicable, as this was a reanalysis of existing NHANES data.

AIM: Voluntary dehydration, or lack of fluid intake despite water availability, is common in otherwise healthy children, and can lead to adverse effects. Most dehydration biomarkers are impractical for routine assessment in paediatric populations. This study aimed to assess two non-invasive hydration assessment tools, urine specific gravity (USG ) and a novel point-of-care (POC) salivary osmolarity (SOSM) sensor, in healthy children. METHODS: Volunteers were tested by colorimetric USG and a handheld SOSM system. Observed values were compared against previous studies to determine hydration status, as was the concordance between parameters. RESULTS: At the common USG threshold of 1.020, 42.4% of the 139 healthy children were dehydrated. The same prevalence was found using the 70-mOSM cut-off value. Comparative analysis of SOSM at varying USG thresholds demonstrated significantly higher SOSM in dehydrated children with a USG  ≥ 1.030 (P = 0.002). CONCLUSION: At the USG threshold of 1.020 and SOSM threshold of 70 mOSM, 42.4% of healthy children were found to be voluntarily dehydrated. Significantly higher SOSM was observed in dehydrated children (USG ≥ 1.030). As the first study on the utility of POC SOSM measurements for detecting dehydration, these results provide a foundation for future POC characterisation of SOSM in other populations and clinical contexts.

Background: We previously found that dehydration is an independent predictor of early deterioration after acute ischemic stroke and rehydration helps to improve outcomes. There is limited evidence of how to treat patients who are initially non-dehydrated. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that rehydration therapy, based on the daily urine specific gravity, will improve the outcome of ischemic stroke patients who are initially non-dehydrated. Methods: We conducted a single-arm prospective study of patients with acute ischemic stroke with historical controls. For the first 5 days of study group, a daily urine specific gravity of > 1.020 g/ml was taken as indication for rehydration and patients were advised to drink water via oral or tubal feeding with a dose of 5 ml/kg body weight right away and after dinner. Control group patients were rehydrated without reference to urine specific gravity. An increase in National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score of ≥ 4 within three days was defined as having stroke-in-evolution. Scores of ≤ 1 on the modified Rankin scale at 3 months were considered to indicate a favorable outcome. Results: A total of 125 patients were analyzed, 46 in the study group and 79 in the control group. The groups did not significantly differ in the stroke-in-evolution rate (4.3% vs. 8.2%, P = 0.474). The rate of favorable outcome at 3 months was significantly higher in the study group than in the control group (56.5% vs. 27.8%, P = 0.001). Conclusions: Urine specific gravity-based hydration might be a useful method to improve functional outcomes of patients with acute ischemic stroke who were non-dehydrated at admission.

Even though scientific literature shows numerous heath complications and performance decrements associated with rapid weight loss (RWL), its prevalence remains exceedingly high across various combat sports. The aim of this study was to thoroughly search the existing literature to explore the influence of RWL on kidney function in Olympic and non-Olympic combat sport athletes. PubMed and Web of Science were searched for the relevant studies. Only original articles published from 2005 onwards, written in English, that included healthy males and females who prompted ~5% weight loss within a week or less, were included in the study. Retrieved studies showed that creatinine, blood urea nitrogen and urine specific gravity values were significantly increased after RWL in the majority of the included studies. This observation indicates that RWL caused dehydration and subsequent acute kidney damage despite various degrees of weight lost during the RWL phase, which can lead to adverse events in other body systems. Alternative methods of weight reduction that prioritize athletes' health should be considered.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a leading contributor to morbidity in liver disease. While hyperammonaemia plays a key role, the mechanisms of cerebral toxicity are unclear. We hypothesized that serum hyperosmolality contributes to HE during acute (ALF) and acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) through mechanisms that affect the water and solute composition of the cerebral environment. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of serum osmolality, cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) solute density (specific gravity, determined from computed tomography attenuation) and clinical HE severity (Glasgow Coma Score [GCS]) at the time of intensive care admission in a prospectively identified cohort of liver failure patients with overt HE. RESULTS: Seventy-three patients (39 ALF and 34 ACLF) were included, of whom 28 (38%) were comatose. Serum osmolality (303.9 ± 15.4 mOsm/kg) was elevated despite normal serum sodium (136.6 ± 6.3 mEq/L). Increased osmolality was independently associated with more severe encephalopathy (ordinal adjusted OR 0.26 [95% CI 0.22, 0.31] for higher GCS per standard deviation increase in osmolality) and lower CSF-specific gravity (linear adjusted ß = -0.039 [95% CI -0.069, -0.009] Hounsfield unit per 1 mOsm/kg). CONCLUSIONS: In the context of related research, these data suggest that hyperosmolality increases brain exposure to metabolic toxins by blood-brain barrier alteration and may be a unique therapeutic target.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Increasing evidence has demonstrated that aquaporin-4 (AQP4) immunoglobulin G causes damage to the kidney in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). However, changes in urinalysis in NMOSD have not been investigated thus far. Our objective was to evaluate the changes in urinalysis in NMOSD patients. METHODS: Case data were collected from 44 patients with AQP4 antibody-positive NMOSD, 53 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and 79 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Analyses of early morning urine and 24-h urine samples comparing NMOSD with MS patients were conducted. RESULTS: In the acute phase, urine pH levels (P < 0.001) and urine specific gravity levels (P < 0.001) from NMOSD patients were significantly higher and lower, respectively, than for MS patients. 24-h urine sodium and 24-h urine volume from NMOSD patients were significantly higher than for MS patients (both P = 0.001). A 24-h urine volume higher than 2500 ml (odds ratio 11.7, 95% confidence interval 1.863-73.066) and a 24-h urine sodium higher than 200 mmol (odds ratio 16.0, 95% confidence interval 2.122-120.648) are more likely to occur in NMOSD patients in the acute phase than in MS patients. CONCLUSIONS: The urinalysis results were significantly different between NMOSD patients and MS patients. The pathophysiological changes in AQP4 antibody-positive NMOSD patients were not limited to the central nervous system.

PREMISE: The use of functional traits has surged in recent decades, providing new insights ranging from individual plant fitness to ecosystem processes. Global plant trait databases have advanced our understanding of plant functional diversity, but they remain incomplete because of geographic and taxonomic biases. Herbarium specimens may help fill these gaps by providing trait information across space and time. We tested whether herbarium specimen-derived measurements are reliable estimates of three important, commonly measured functional traits-specific leaf area (SLA), branch wood specific gravity, and leaf thickness. METHODS: Leaves and branches were collected from species cultivated at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and Florida International University in Miami, FL, USA. Fresh components of SLA (area), branch wood specific gravity (volume), and leaf thickness were measured following standard trait measurement protocols. We compared these trait values to corresponding measurements using plant tissues dried in a plant press following standard herbarium plant collecting protocols. RESULTS: Herbarium-derived trait measurements (dried tissues) were highly correlated with those measured using fresh tissues following standard protocols (SLA: R2 = 0.72-0.97, p < 0.01; wood specific gravity: R2 = 0.74-0.75, p < 0.01; leaf thickness: R2 = 0.96, p < 0.01). However, except for leaf thickness, linear model slope or intercept coefficients differed from 1, indicating herbarium-derived trait measurements may provide biased estimates of fresh traits without the use of correction factors. CONCLUSIONS: Herbarium-derived traits cannot always be used interchangeably with those measured from fresh tissues because of tissue shrinkage. However, herbarium-derived trait data still have the potential to drastically expand the temporal, geographic, and taxonomic scope of global trait databases.

We aimed to identify the association of hydration status with insulin resistance (IR) and body fat distribution. A total of 14 344 adults participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2008-2010. We used urine specific gravity (USG) to indicate hydration status, and HOMA-IR (homoeostasis model assessment of IR) and trunk:leg fat ratio (TLR) as primary outcomes. In multivariate logistic regression, the OR per 0·01 increase in USG for high IR was 1·303 (95 % CI 1·185, 1·433; P < 0·001). In multivariate generalised additive model plots, increased USG showed a J-shaped association with logarithmic HOMA-IR, with the lowest Akaike's information criterion score of USG 1·030. Moreover, increased USG was independently associated with increased trunk fat, decreased leg fat and increased TLR. In mediation analysis, the proportion of mediation effects of USG on TLR via IR was 0·193 (95 % CI 0·132, 0·285; P < 0·001), while the proportion of mediation effects of USG on IR via TLR was 0·130 (95 % CI 0·086, 0·188; P < 0·001). Increased USG, a sign of low hydration status and presumably high vasopressin, was associated with IR and poor fat distribution. Direct effect of low hydration status may be more dominant than indirect effect via IR or fat distribution. Further studies are necessary to confirm our findings.
