RESUMO

Overharvest can severely reduce the abundance and distribution of a species and thereby impact its genetic diversity and threaten its future viability. Overharvest remains an ongoing issue for Arctic mammals, which due to climate change now also confront one of the fastest changing environments on Earth. The high-arctic Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus), endemic to Svalbard, experienced a harvest-induced demographic bottleneck that occurred during the 17-20th centuries. Here, we investigate changes in genetic diversity, population structure, and gene-specific differentiation during and after this overharvesting event. Using whole-genome shotgun sequencing, we generated the first ancient and historical nuclear (n = 11) and mitochondrial (n = 18) genomes from Svalbard reindeer (up to 4000 BP) and integrated these data with a large collection of modern genome sequences (n = 90) to infer temporal changes. We show that hunting resulted in major genetic changes and restructuring in reindeer populations. Near-extirpation followed by pronounced genetic drift has altered the allele frequencies of important genes contributing to diverse biological functions. Median heterozygosity was reduced by 26%, while the mitochondrial genetic diversity was reduced only to a limited extent, likely due to already low pre-harvest diversity and a complex post-harvest recolonization process. Such genomic erosion and genetic isolation of populations due to past anthropogenic disturbance will likely play a major role in metapopulation dynamics (i.e., extirpation, recolonization) under further climate change. Our results from a high-arctic case study therefore emphasize the need to understand the long-term interplay of past, current, and future stressors in wildlife conservation.

Identified as a newly described species from a biocrust in Svalbard, Norway (78° 54' 8.27″ N 12° 01' 20.34″ E), isolate PAP01T has different characteristics from any known predatory bacteria. The isolate was vibrio-shaped strain that employed flagellar motility. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the isolate clustered within the genus Bdellovibrio in the family Bdellovibrionaceae. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between strain PAP01T and the type strain (Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus HD100) was 95.7 %. The PAP01T genome has a size of 3.898 Mbp and possesses 3732 genes and a G+C content of 45.7 mol%. The results of genetic and physiological tests indicated the phenotypic differentiation of strain PAP01T from the two other Bdellovibrio species with validly published names. Based on the physiological and phylogenetic data, as well as the prey range spectrum and osmolality sensitivities, isolate PAP01T represents a novel species within the genus Bdellovibrio, for which the name Bdellovibrio svalbardensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is PAP01T (=KCTC 92583T=DSM 115080T).

A yellow pigmented, Gram-stain-positive, motile, facultatively anaerobic and irregular rod-shaped bacteria (strain M0-14T) was isolated from a till sample collected from the foreland of a high Arctic glacier near the settlement of Ny-Ålesund in the Svalbard Archipelago, Norway. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that M0-14T formed a lineage within the family Cellulomonadaceae, suborder Micrococcineae. M0-14T represented a novel member of the genus Pengzhenrongella and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Pengzhenrongella sicca LRZ-2T (97.3 %). Growth occurred at 4-25 °C (optimum 4-18 °C), at pH 6.0-9.0 (optimum pH 7.0), and in the presence of 0-5 % (w/v) NaCl. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4) and the major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0 and summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol mannosides, phosphatidylinositol, one undefined phospholipid and five undefined phosphoglycolipids. The cell-wall diamino acid was l-ornithine whereas rhamnose and mannose were the cell-wall sugars. Polyphosphate particles were found inside the cells of M0-14T. Polyphosphate kinase and polyphosphate-dependent glucokinase genes were detected during genomic sequencing of M0-14. In addition, the complete pstSCAB gene cluster and phnCDE synthesis genes, which are important for the uptake and transport of phosphorus in cells, were annotated in the genomic data. According to the genomic data, M0-14T has a metabolic pathway related to phosphorus accumulation. The DNA G+C content of the genomic DNA was 70.8 %. On the basis of its phylogenetic relationship, phenotypic properties and chemotaxonomic distinctiveness, strain M0-14T represents a novel species of the genus Pengzhenrongella, for which the name Pengzhenrongella phosphoraccumulans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M0-14T (= CCTCC AB 2012967T = NRRL B-59105T).

The microbial diversity associated with terrestrial groundwater seepage through permafrost soils is tightly coupled to the geochemistry of these fluids. Terrestrial alkaline methane seeps from Lagoon Pingo, Central Spitsbergen (78°N) in Norway, with methane-saturated and oxygen-limited groundwater discharge providing a potential habitat for methanotrophy. Here, we report on the microbial community's comparative analyses and distribution patterns at two sites close to Lagoon Pingo's methane emission source. To target methane-oxidizing bacteria from this system, we analysed the microbial community pattern of replicate samples from two sections near the main methane seepage source. DNA extraction, metabarcoding and subsequent sequencing of 16S rRNA genes revealed microbial communities where the major prokaryotic phyla were Pseudomonadota (42-47%), Gemmatimonadota (4-14%) and Actinobacteriota (7-11%). Among the Pseudomonadota, members of the genus Methylobacter were present at relative abundances between 1.6 and 4.7%. Enrichment targeting the methane oxidising bacteria was set up using methane seep sediments as inoculum and methane as the sole carbon and energy source, and this resulted in the isolation of a novel psychrophilic methane oxidizer, LS7-T4AT. The optimum growth temperature for the isolate was 13 °C and the pH optimum was 8.0. The morphology of cells was short rods, and TEM analysis revealed intracytoplasmic membranes arranged in stacks, a distinctive feature for Type I methanotrophs in the family Methylomonadaceae of the class Gammaproteobacteria. The strain belongs to the genus Methylobacter based on high 16S rRNA gene similarity to the psychrophilic species of Methylobacter psychrophilus Z-0021T (98.95%), the psychrophilic strain Methylobacter sp. strain S3L5C (99.00%), and the Arctic mesophilic species of Methylobacter tundripaludum SV96T (99.06%). The genome size of LS7-T4AT was 4,338,157 bp with a G + C content of 47.93%. The average nucleotide identities (ANIb) of strain LS7-T4AT to 10 isolated strains of genus Methylobacter were between 75.54 and 85.51%, lower than the species threshold of 95%. The strain LS7-T4AT represents a novel Arctic species, distinct from other members of the genus Methylobacter, for which the name Methylobacter svalbardensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type of strain is LS7-T4AT (DSMZ:114308, JCM:39463).

Climate change is most strongly felt in the polar regions of the world, with significant impacts on the species that live there. The arrival of parasites and pathogens from more temperate areas may become a significant problem for these populations, but current observations of parasite presence often lack a historical reference of prior absence. Observations in the high Arctic of the seabird tick Ixodes uriae suggested that this species expanded poleward in the last two decades in relation to climate change. As this tick can have a direct impact on the breeding success of its seabird hosts and vectors several pathogens, including Lyme disease spirochaetes, understanding its invasion dynamics is essential for predicting its impact on polar seabird populations. Here, we use population genetic data and host serology to test the hypothesis that I. uriae recently expanded into Svalbard. Both black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) and thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia) were sampled for ticks and blood in Kongsfjorden, Spitsbergen. Ticks were genotyped using microsatellite markers and population genetic analyses were performed using data from 14 reference populations from across the tick's northern distribution. In contrast to predictions, the Spitsbergen population showed high genetic diversity and significant differentiation from reference populations, suggesting long-term isolation. Host serology also demonstrated a high exposure rate to Lyme disease spirochaetes (Bbsl). Targeted PCR and sequencing confirmed the presence of Borrelia garinii in a Spitsbergen tick, demonstrating the presence of Lyme disease bacteria in the high Arctic for the first time. Taken together, results contradict the notion that I. uriae has recently expanded into the high Arctic. Rather, this tick has likely been present for some time, maintaining relatively high population sizes and an endemic transmission cycle of Bbsl. Close future observations of population infestation/infection rates will now be necessary to relate epidemiological changes to ongoing climate modifications.

Arctic ecosystems are changing dramatically with warmer and wetter conditions resulting in complex interactions between herbivores and their forage. We investigated how Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) modify their late winter diets in response to long-term trends and interannual variation in forage availability and accessibility. By reconstructing their diets and foraging niches over a 17-year period (1995-2012) using serum δ13 C and δ15 N values, we found strong support for a temporal increase in the proportions of graminoids in the diets with a concurrent decline in the contributions of mosses. This dietary shift corresponds with graminoid abundance increases in the region and was associated with increases in population density, warmer summer temperatures and more frequent rain-on-snow (ROS) in winter. In addition, the variance in isotopic niche positions, breadths, and overlaps also supported a temporal shift in the foraging niche and a dietary response to extreme ROS events. Our long-term study highlights the mechanisms by which winter and summer climate changes cascade through vegetation shifts and herbivore population dynamics to alter the foraging niche of Svalbard reindeer. Although it has been anticipated that climate changes in the Svalbard region of the Arctic would be detrimental to this unique ungulate, our study suggests that environmental change is in a phase where conditions are improving for this subspecies at the northernmost edge of the Rangifer distribution.

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped bacterial strain designated as 20VBR1T was isolated from a valley glacier (Vestrebroggerbreen) snout ice sample from Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, Arctic. The colonies were smooth, circular and light creamish on half-strength R2A agar and grew at 10-35 °C (optimum, 20 °C), at pH 6.5-8.0 (optimum, 7.0) and with 0-2.5 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0.5 %). 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain 20VBR1T belonged to the genus Phenylobacterium and was most closely affiliated to Phenylobacterium aquaticum W2-3-4T (97.65 % similarity), Phenylobacterium haematophilum LMG 11050T (97.57 %) and Phenylobacterium koreense Slu-01T (96.91 %). 20VBR1T has a genome size of 4.24 Mb, comprising 4185 predicted genes with a DNA G+C content of 67.86 mol%. DNA-DNA hybridization experiments indicated that the DNA-DNA relatedness between strain 20VBR1T and P. aquaticum KACC 18306T was 41.95±4.36 %, well below the threshold (<70 %) to delineate bacterial species. Genome relatedness indexes revealed that the average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between 20VBR1T and its closest phylogenomic relative, P. aquaticum KACC 18306T, were 78.97 and 22.10 %, respectively. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone (Q-10) and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, one unknown phospholipid, one unknown glycolipid and four unidentified polar lipids. The major fatty acids (>10 %) of strain 20VBR1T were summed feature 8 (comprising C18 : 1 ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c), summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1 ω6c and/or C16 : 1 ω7c) and C16 : 0. Based on the physiological, biochemical, chemotaxonomic, phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses, isolate 20VBR1T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Phenylobacterium, for which the name Phenylobacterium glaciei sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 20VBR1T (=JCM 33227 T=DSM 111428 T=MCC 4220 T).

Climate change-driven increases in air and sea temperatures are rapidly thawing the Arctic cryosphere with potential for remobilization and accumulation of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in adjacent coastal food webs. Here, we present concentrations of selected POPs in zooplankton (spatially and seasonally), as well as zoobenthos and sculpin (spatially) from Isfjorden, Svalbard. Herbivorous zooplankton contaminant concentrations were highest in May [e.g., ∑polychlorinated biphenyls (8PCB); 4.43, 95% CI: 2.72-6.3 ng/g lipid weight], coinciding with the final stages of the spring phytoplankton bloom, and lowest in August (∑8PCB; 1.6, 95% CI: 1.29-1.92 ng/g lipid weight) when zooplankton lipid content was highest, and the fjord was heavily impacted by sediment-laden terrestrial inputs. Slightly increasing concentrations of α-hexachlorocyclohexane (α-HCH) in zooplankton from June (1.18, 95% CI: 1.06-1.29 ng/g lipid weight) to August (1.57, 95% CI: 1.44-1.71 ng/g lipid weight), alongside a higher percentage of α-HCH enantiomeric fractions closer to racemic ranges, indicate that glacial meltwater is a secondary source of α-HCH to fjord zooplankton in late summer. Except for α-HCH, terrestrial inputs were generally associated with reduced POP concentrations in zooplankton, suggesting that increased glacial melt is not likely to significantly increase exposure of legacy POPs in coastal fauna.

In birds, maternal transfer is a major exposure route for several contaminants, including poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Little is known, however, about the extent of the transfer of the different PFAS compounds to the eggs, especially for alternative fluorinated compounds. In the present study, we measured legacy and emerging PFAS, including Gen-X, ADONA, and F-53B, in the plasma of prelaying black-legged kittiwake females breeding in Svalbard and the yolk of their eggs. We aimed to (1) describe the contaminant levels and patterns in both females and eggs, and (2) investigate the maternal transfer, that is, biological variables and the relationship between the females and their eggs for each compound. Contamination of both females and eggs were dominated by linPFOS then PFUnA or PFTriA. We notably found 7:3 fluorotelomer carboxylic acid─a precursor of long-chain carboxylates─in 84% of the egg yolks, and provide the first documented finding of ADONA in wildlife. Emerging compounds were all below the detection limit in female plasma. There was a linear association between females and eggs for most of the PFAS. Analyses of maternal transfer ratios in females and eggs suggest that the transfer is increasing with PFAS carbon chain length, therefore the longest chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) were preferentially transferred to the eggs. The mean ∑PFAS in the second-laid eggs was 73% of that in the first-laid eggs. Additional effort on assessing the outcome of maternal transfers on avian development physiology is essential, especially for PFCAs and emerging fluorinated compounds which are under-represented in experimental studies.

We investigated pigment and mycosporine-like amino acid (MAA) concentrations of phytoplankton and Northern krill (Thysanoessa sp.) in sub-Arctic Kongsfjorden. Chlorophyll a (Chl-a) concentrations in the surface and middle-layer water were 0.44 µg L-1 (±0.17 µg L-1) and 0.63 µg L-1 (±0.25 µg L-1), respectively. Alloxanthin (Allo, a marker of cryptophytes) was observed at all stations, and its mean values for surface and middle-layer water were 0.09 µg L-1 (±0.05 µg L-1) and 0.05 (±0.02 µg L-1), respectively. The mean MAA-to-Chl-a ratios at the surface (3.31 ± 2.58 µg (µg Chl-a)-1) were significantly higher than those in the middle-layer water (0.88 ± 0.49 µg (µg Chl-a)-1), suggesting that these compounds play an important role in reducing UV photodamage. In gut pigment levels of Northern krill, the most abundant accessory pigment was Allo (2.79 ± 0.33 µg g-1 dry weight; d.w.), as was the accumulation of Chl-a (8.29 ± 1.13 µg g-1 d.w.). The average concentration of MAAs was 1.87 mg g-1 d.w. (±0.88 mg g-1 d.w.) in krill eyes, which was higher than that in all other body parts (0.99 ± 0.41 mg g-1 d.w.), except for the gut. Thysanoessa sp. was found to contain five identified MAAs (shinorine, palythine, porphyra-334, mycosporine-glycine, and M-332) in the krill eye, whereas shinorine and porphyra-334 were only observed in the krill body, not the eyes and gut. These findings suggest that Northern krill accumulate MAAs of various compositions through the diet (mainly cryptophytes) and translocate them among their body parts as an adaptation for photoprotection and physiological demands.

To improve understanding and management of the consequences of current rapid environmental change, ecologists advocate using long-term monitoring data series to generate iterative near-term predictions of ecosystem responses. This approach allows scientific evidence to increase rapidly and management strategies to be tailored simultaneously. Iterative near-term forecasting may therefore be particularly useful for adaptive monitoring of ecosystems subjected to rapid climate change. Here, we show how to implement near-term forecasting in the case of a harvested population of rock ptarmigan in high-arctic Svalbard, a region subjected to the largest and most rapid climate change on Earth. We fitted state-space models to ptarmigan counts from point transect distance sampling during 2005-2019 and developed two types of predictions: (1) explanatory predictions to quantify the effect of potential drivers of ptarmigan population dynamics, and (2) anticipatory predictions to assess the ability of candidate models of increasing complexity to forecast next-year population density. Based on the explanatory predictions, we found that a recent increasing trend in the Svalbard rock ptarmigan population can be attributed to major changes in winter climate. Currently, a strong positive effect of increasing average winter temperature on ptarmigan population growth outweighs the negative impacts of other manifestations of climate change such as rain-on-snow events. Moreover, the ptarmigan population may compensate for current harvest levels. Based on the anticipatory predictions, the near-term forecasting ability of the models improved nonlinearly with the length of the time series, but yielded good forecasts even based on a short time series. The inclusion of ecological predictors improved forecasts of sharp changes in next-year population density, demonstrating the value of ecosystem-based monitoring. Overall, our study illustrates the power of integrating near-term forecasting in monitoring systems to aid understanding and management of wildlife populations exposed to rapid climate change. We provide recommendations for how to improve this approach.

Sampling campaigns in Greenland and Svalbard were executed to explore fungal diversity in cold habitats. Three very abundant groups of strains were discovered, consisting either of recently described or of yet-undescribed psychrophilic and oligotrophic yeasts and dimorphic fungi, accounting for around 50 % of the total cultivable diversity of basidiomycetes in our studies. The occurrence of these taxa has also been demonstrated by culture-independent methods. Based on phylogenetic analyses of ribosomal gene cluster sequences (D1/D2 domains of 28S (LSU), 18S (SSU), ITS with 5.8S rDNA) and sequences of protein-coding genes for elongation factor one alpha (TEF), cytochrome b (CYTB) and two subunits of the RNA polymerase II (RPB1 and RPB2) obtained from pure cultures, the isolated taxa presented in this study belong to Basidiomycota, subphylum Pucciniomycotina, class Microbotryomycetes, family Camptobasidiaceae. The dataset of the sequences supported the recognition of three species: Camptobasidium gelus, Camptobasidium arcticum sp. nov. (ex-type strain EXF-12713) and Psychromyces glacialis gen. and sp. nov. (ex-type strain EXF-13111). Camptobasidium gelus was found in the Svalbard and Greenland samples, while representatives of the here proposed new species, C. arcticum, were found only in the Greenland Ice Sheet. Psychromyces gen. nov. was erected for the dimorphic/filamentous isolates found in Svalbard and Greenland glacial environments. The taxon, for which the invalid name 'Rhodotorula svalbardensis' has been used, belongs to this genus. Based on ribosomal genes, Camptobasidium arcticum and Psychromyces glacialis are related, phylogenetically most closely related to the genera Glaciozyma and Cryolevonia. Seven genes phylogeny restricted to taxa with available sequences, supported the placement of Psychromyces to Camptobasidiaceae.

A yellow bacterial strain, designated LRZ-2T, was isolated from High Arctic tundra near the settlement Ny-Ålesund in the Svalbard Archipelago, Norway. The cells were Gram-stain-positive, aerobic and non-sporulating. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that strain LRZ-2T represented a novel member of the suborder Micrococcineae. Its nearest phylogenetic neighbours were the members of the genus Luteimicrobium, with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 95.3-96.9 %. The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between the genomes of strain LRZ-2T and its closely related strains were 77.4-74.3 % and 21.4-19.6 %, respectively. The DNA G+C content was 72.4 mol%. The peptidoglycan type of the isolate was A4ß with an interpeptide bridge comprising l-ornithine and d-glutamic acid. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9 (H4) and the major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 1 A, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, phosphatidylinositol dimannoside, unidentified phosphoglycolipid, four unidentified phospholipids and two unidentified polar lipids. Strain LRZ-2T showed a 16S rRNA gene signature pattern consisting of nucleotides at positions 120 (A), 131-231 (C-G), 196 (C), 342-347 (C-G), 444-490 (A-U), 580-761 (C-G), 602-636 (C-G), 670-736 (A-U), 822-878 (G-C), 823-877 (G-C), 826-874 (C-G), 827 (U), 843 (C), 950-1231 (U-A), 1047-1210 (G-C), 1109 (C), 1145 (G), 1309-1328 (G-C), 1361 (G) and 1383 (C), which clearly distinguished it from all genera previously reported in the suborder Micrococcineae. On the basis of the phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data, strain LRZ-2T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Pengzhenrongella sicca gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Pengzhenrongella sicca is LRZ-2T (=CCTCC AB 2012163T=DSM 100332T).

Two new secondary metabolites, svalbamides A (1) and B (2), were isolated from a culture extract of Paenibacillus sp. SVB7 that was isolated from surface sediment from a core (HH17-1085) taken in the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. The combinational analysis of HR-MS and NMR spectroscopic data revealed the structures of 1 and 2 as being lipopeptides bearing 3-amino-2-pyrrolidinone, d-valine, and 3-hydroxy-8-methyldecanoic acid. The absolute configurations of the amino acid residues in svalbamides A and B were determined using the advanced Marfey's method, in which the hydrolysates of 1 and 2 were derivatized with l- and d- forms of 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrophenyl-5-alanine amide (FDAA). The absolute configurations of 1 and 2 were completely assigned by deducing the stereochemistry of 3-hydroxy-8-methyldecanoic acid based on DP4 calculations. Svalbamides A and B induced quinone reductase activity in Hepa1c1c7 murine hepatoma cells, indicating that they represent chemotypes with a potential for functioning as chemopreventive agents.

Studies on the presence of atmospheric fungi in both Arctic and Antarctic polar areas are rare, and many of them were carried out briefly. Currently, when climate change is a fact, polar areas may be subject to various changes and fluctuations, negatively affecting sensitive polar ecosystems. The paper presents the results of tests on presence of fungi in the air over 30 years after the last investigations at the Svalbard Archipelago. A total of fifteen taxa of fungi were isolated in area of Longyearbyen, the majority of which were saprotrophic fungi of the genus Cladosporium that are associated with dead organic matter. Therefore, the presence of this taxon may be a good bioindicator of changes occurring in the Arctic environment, indirectly indicating the melting of glaciers and exposing increasingly larger areas inhabited by microorganisms, including fungi, which increase in number in the air. Additionally, the number of tourists visiting Longyearbyen is increasing, which may significantly affect the number and type of fungi in the air.

The Arctic aphids live briefly and must breed quickly to survive. Shortened life cycle, with only two generations: the stem mother and sexuales-oviparous females and males is an adaptation for optimal use of the short breeding period, which lasts from late July to the end of August. Using Acyrthosiphon svalbardicum, an endemic High Arctic aphid species, we describe the structure of the reproductive system of sexual morphs and compare with its temperate counterparts, in particular the model organism the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum. Generally, the histological composition and ultrastructure of reproductive system of sexuales of A. svalbardicum is broadly similar to the reproductive systems described already in other species of aphids. The unique characters include in both oviparous females and males an enormous layer of the fat body, adhering to the structures of the internal reproductive system. The greatly enlarged accessory glands of males accumulate a heterogenous secretion composed of irregularly organized bunches of spicule-like structures of high electron density embedded in fine and coarse granular material. This material, unknown among temperate counterparts of A. svalbardicum, during mating is transported from the accessory glands of the male to its ejaculatory duct, where it is mixed with the ejaculate, and then is transferred to the spermatheca of the oviparous female.

Organisms use changes in photoperiod to anticipate and exploit favourable conditions in a seasonal environment. While species living at temperate latitudes receive day length information as a year-round input, species living in the Arctic may spend as much as two-thirds of the year without experiencing dawn or dusk. This suggests that specialised mechanisms may be required to maintain seasonal synchrony in polar regions. Svalbard ptarmigan (Lagopus muta hyperborea) are resident at 74-81°N latitude. They spend winter in constant darkness (DD) and summer in constant light (LL); extreme photoperiodic conditions under which they do not display overt circadian rhythms. Here, we explored how Arctic adaptation in circadian biology affects photoperiodic time measurement in captive Svalbard ptarmigan. For this purpose, DD-adapted birds, showing no circadian behaviour, either remained in prolonged DD, were transferred into a simulated natural photoperiod (SNP) or were transferred directly into LL. Birds transferred from DD to LL exhibited a strong photoperiodic response in terms of activation of the hypothalamic thyrotropin-mediated photoperiodic response pathway. This was assayed through expression of the Eya3, Tshß and deiodinase genes, as well as gonadal development. While transfer to SNP established synchronous diurnal activity patterns, activity in birds transferred from DD to LL showed no evidence of circadian rhythmicity. These data show that the Svalbard ptarmigan does not require circadian entrainment to develop a photoperiodic response involving conserved molecular elements found in temperate species. Further studies are required to define how exactly Arctic adaptation modifies seasonal timer mechanisms.

The iconic picture of Arctic marine ecosystems shows an intense pulse of biological productivity around the spring bloom that is sustained while fresh organic matter (OM) is available, after which ecosystem activity declines to basal levels in autumn and winter. We investigated seasonality in benthic biogeochemical cycling at three stations in a high Arctic fjord that has recently lost much of its seasonal ice-cover. Unlike observations from other Arctic locations, we find little seasonality in sediment community respiration and bioturbation rates, although different sediment reworking modes varied through the year. Nutrient fluxes did vary, suggesting that, although OM was processed at similar rates, seasonality in its quality led to spring/summer peaks in inorganic nitrogen and silicate fluxes. These patterns correspond to published information on seasonality in vertical flux at the stations. Largely ice-free Kongsfjorden has a considerable detrital pool in soft sediments which sustain benthic communities over the year. Sources of this include macroalgae and terrestrial runoff. Climate change leading to less ice cover, higher light availability and expanded benthic habitat may lead to more detrital carbon in the system, dampening the quantitative importance of seasonal pulses of phytodetritus to seafloor communities in some areas of the Arctic. BACKGROUND: Wild aquatic birds serve as the natural reservoir for avian influenza virus (AIV), a disease with significant implications for avian and mammalian health. Climate change is predicted to impact the dynamics of AIV, particularly in areas such as the Arctic, but the baseline data needed to detect these shifts is often unavailable. In this study, plasma from two species of gulls breeding on the high-Arctic Svalbard archipelago were screened for antibodies to AIV. RESULTS: AIV antibodies were found in black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) samples from multiple years, as well as in glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreous) samples. CONCLUSIONS: Despite small sample sizes, evidence of exposure to AIV was found among Svalbard gulls. A wider survey of Svalbard avian species is warranted to establish knowledge on the extent of AIV exposure on Svalbard and to determine whether active infections are present.

Mercury and its speciation in aquatic ecosystems have been assessed globally. Even though previous studies were limited to Arctic freshwater lakes, they are highly significant in the context of the changing climate. The present study is based on sediment samples collected from three Arctic freshwater lakes over a period of 4 years (2015-2018). The samples were analysed for total mercury (THg), methyl mercury (MHg), and various mercury fractions. The observed mean THg and MHg concentrations were 22.23 ng/g and 0.41 ng/g respectively; these values were comparable with those for other Arctic freshwater lakes. The mercury content significantly varied among the years as well as among the lakes. Changes in snowdrift and meltwater inputs, which are the major sources of water for the lakes, may have influenced the sediment mercury content along with geographical location and increased productivity. The results of MHg indicated the susceptibility of lake sediments to methylation. The major fractions observed were the organo-chelated form of mercury, followed by the elemental and water-soluble forms. These results indicate the availability of mercury for methylation. Hence, it is necessary to conduct more studies on the influence of climate change, mercury release through permafrost melting, and atmospheric deposition.
