RESUMO

Reclaimed water irrigation has emerged as a critical alternative in agricultural regions facing water scarcity. However, soil pollution with microplastics (MPs) greatly increases the exposure risk and toxic effects of reclaimed water contaminations, such as phthalate esters (PAEs). A field experiment consisting of soil column pots evaluated the feasibility of using PAEs-contaminated water to irrigate oats (Avena sativa L.) in drought seasons. Three irrigation regimens based on soil matric potential thresholds (-10 kPa, -30 kPa, -50 kPa) explored the impact of PAE-contaminated water on oat physiology and environmental pollution in soil with and without MPs contamination. The results showed that treating oats at the SMP of -30 kPa boosted shoot biomass by 3.1%-14.0% compared to the drought condition at -50 kPa, and the root biomass of oats was significantly increased. The physiological metrics of oats indicated that irrigation at -50 kPa induced drought stress and oxidative damage in oats, particularly during the milk stage. Different irrigation treatments influenced the accumulation of PAEs in plants, soil, and leachate. The ratios of leachate to irrigation water in -10 kPa treatment with and without MPs addition were 1.18% and 4.48%, respectively, which aggravated the accumulation of pollutants in deep soil layers and may cause groundwater pollution. MPs pollution in soil increased the content of PAEs in the harvested oats and reduced the transport and accumulation of PAEs in deep soil layers (20-50 cm) and leachate. The coupling of PAEs in irrigation water with soil MPs pollution may exacerbate plant damage. However, the damage can be minimized under the scheduled irrigation at -30 kPa which could balance crop yield and potential risks.

RESUMO

Saline water has proven to be one of the alternative sources of freshwater for agricultural irrigation in water-scarce areas. However, the changes in farmland ecology caused by saline water irrigation remain unclear. In this study, six irrigation water salinities (CK: 1.3 dS m-1, S1: 3.4 dS m-1, S2: 7.1 dS m-1, S3: 10.6 dS m-1, S4: 14.1 dS m-1, S5: 17.7 dS m-1) were set in a three-year (2019, 2021-2022) experiment to investigate their effects on soil environment and greenhouse gas emissions in cotton fields under long-term saline water irrigation. Results show that soil salinity in the same layer increased as increasing water salinity. Soil moisture of S3-S5 increased significantly by 4.99-12.94%. There was no significant difference in soil organic matter content between CK and S1. Saline water irrigation increased soil ammonium nitrogen content by 0.57-49.26%, while decreasing nitrate nitrogen content by 1.43-32.03%. Soil CO2 and N2O emissions and CH4 uptake were lower in S1-S5 than in CK at different cotton growth stages. In addition, saline water irrigation reduced the global warming potential by 6.93-53.86%. A structural equation model was developed to show that soil salinity, moisture, and ammonium nitrogen content were negatively correlated with global warming potential, while organic matter and nitrate nitrogen had positive effects on global warming potential. Considering the comprehensive perspectives of gas emissions and cotton yield, irrigation water with salinity less than 10.6 dS m-1 could effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cotton fields while maintaining stable cotton yields in the experimental area and similar region.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Biochar addition strongly alters net carbon (C) balance in agroecosystems. However, the effects of biochar addition on net C balance of maize field under various irrigation water quantities and qualities remains unclear. Thus, a field experiment combining two irrigation levels of full (W1) and deficit irrigation (W2 = 1/2 W1), two water salinity levels of fresh (S0, 0.71 g L-1 ) and brackish water (S1, 4 g L-1 ), and two biochar addition rates of 0 t ha-1 (B0) and 60 t ha-1 (B1) was conducted to investigate soil carbon dioxide (CO2 ) emissions, maize C sequestration and C budget. RESULTS: Compared with W1, W2 reduced average cumulative CO2 emissions by 6.5% and 19.9% for 2020 and 2021, respectively. The average cumulative CO2 emissions under W1S1 treatments were 5.4% and 22.3% lower than W1S0 for 2020 and 2021, respectively, whereas W2S0 and W2S1 had similar cumulative CO2 emissions in both years. Biochar addition significantly increased cumulative CO2 emissions by 17.8-23.5% for all water and salt treatments in 2020, and reduced average cumulative CO2 emissions by 11.9% for W1 but enhanced it by 8.0% for W2 in 2021. Except for W2S1, biochar addition effectively increased total maize C sequestration by 6.9-14.8% for the other three treatments through ameliorating water and salt stress over the 2 years. Compared with W1S0, W1S1 did not affect net C sequestration, but W2 treatments significantly decreased it. Biochar addition increased net C sequestration by 39.47-43.65 t C ha-1 for four water and salt treatments for the 2 years. CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate that biochar addition is an effective strategy to increase both crop C sequestration and soil C storage under suitable water-saving irrigation methods in arid regions with limited freshwater resources. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Water irrigation is an efficacious decontaminating method for dermis exposures to corrosive agents and hence has been widely applied to treat especially alkali burns. Nevertheless, once alkali has infiltrated the deep subcutaneous tissue, washing the tissue surface with water irrigation does not attenuate the damage progress. Therefore, significant efforts have been devoted to promising strategies aimed at removing the deeply infiltrated lye. According to a recent report, the negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) reduces the pH value of the exudate from alkali-provoked burns thus accelerating wound healing. However, it remains to be ascertained whether or not NPWT coupled with water irrigation, that is, iNPWT, more effectively hinders the alkali injury deepening. In this study, we compared the effectiveness of an early application of water irrigation with or without NPWT in preventing the progressive deepening of the alkali burn in an animal model. Our histological examination results showed no appreciable difference in tissue injury depth, dermal retention, inflammatory cell infiltration, re-epithelization, and cellular function between iNPWT and water irrigation alone treatments. Thus, our results prove that the more expensive NPWT coupled with water irrigation does not more effectively hinder the alkali's injury deepening. Hence, iNPWT use should be more cautious in clinical practice.

RESUMO

Several trematodes including Opisthorchis viverrini utilize Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos as a snail intermediate host in their life cycles. In order to capture a comprehensive range of hostparasite interactions and their transmission dynamic patterns, B. s. goniomphalos were sampled monthly over 4 consecutive years in an irrigated paddy-field habitat in northeast Thailand. Using a standard cercarial shedding method, a high diversity of trematodes (17 types) was recovered. Virgulate xiphidiocercariae were the most prevalent (7.84%) followed by O. viverrini (0.71%). In addition to seasonal and environmental factors, the quantity of irrigation water for rice cultivation correlated with transmission dynamics of trematodes in B. s. goniomphalos. The peak prevalence of all trematode infections combined in the snails shifted from the cool-dry season in 20102012 to the hot-dry season in 2013 associated with an increasing quantity of water irrigation. A low frequency of mixed trematode infections was found, indicating that the emergence of virgulate cercariae, but not of O. viverrini, was negatively impacted by the presence of other trematodes in the same snail. Taken together, the observed results suggest that interactions between host and parasite, and hence transmission dynamics, depend on specific characteristics of the parasite and environmental factors including irrigated water for rice cultivation.

RESUMO

The transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil under reclaimed water irrigation poses a potential environmental risk. Regulation of NPK fertilizer could influence the behavior of bacterial communities, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and soil properties, which determine the fate of ARGs. To identify the key element in NPK fertilizer and realize efficient regulation, we explored the effect of individual N, P, K fertilization on ARG variation in tomato rhizosphere and bulk soils. Compared with an unfertilized treatment, N fertilization resulted in greater decreases in the abundance of ARGs (decreases of 24.06%-73.09%) than did either P fertilization (increases of up to 35.84%, decreases of up to 58.80%) or K fertilization (decreases of 13.47%-72.47%). The influence of different forms of N (CO(NH2)2, NaNO3, and NH4HCO3), P (Ca(H2PO4)2 and CaMgO4P+), and K (KCl and K2(SO4)) fertilizers was also investigated in this study, and showed the influence of NaNO3, CaMgO4P+, and K2(SO4) on reducing ARGs abundance was greater in different types of N, P, K fertilizers. Bacterial communities showed the strongest response to N fertilization. The reduced bacterial diversity and abundance of ARG-host and non-host organisms explained the decline of total ARG abundance in soil. In soils fertilized with either P or K, the effect of soil properties, especially total nitrogen and pH, on ARG variation was greater than that of bacterial community and MGEs. These results suggest that N regulation of in NPK fertilizer may be an effective way to reduce the risks of ARGs in soil associated with reclaimed water irrigation.

RESUMO

The use of reclaimed water to irrigate agricultural crops has increased in recent years as a consequence of water shortage constituting a potential risk for human health. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the impact on the soil-plant system and determining the accumulation of carbamazepine (CBZ), diclofenac (DCF), ketoprofen (KTP) and naproxen (NPX) in the edible part of lettuce under commonly used agricultural practices in commercial production. For this purpose, red oak baby lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) was irrigated with reclaimed water fortified with different concentrations of pharmaceuticals. The study was carried out in two different scenarios: soil and tray. The tray experiments were conducted with substrate and took place at three different seasons of the year. Lettuce tissue sampled from these experiments were analysed 3 times during the lettuce growing cycle (first, second and third harvest). The practices of first harvest regrowth were also evaluated. For all experiments, CBZ showed the highest accumulation in lettuce leaves of the pharmaceuticals tested, showing a correlation between irrigation exposure time and pharmaceutical uptake. Unexpectedly, DCF was the compound with the highest uptake levels after regrowth practices. Results suggested that pharmaceuticals uptake could be directly associated with the irrigation method and possible accumulation in soil and substrates, while concentration of pharmaceuticals in substrates were 10 times higher. Based on the concentration values detected in lettuce leaves, the risk assessment suggests that no compounds imply any risk to human health, except CBZ for those on vegetarian diets in the tray scenario. Although commercial agricultural practices are usually not considered with regards to risk reduction, in this experiment we demonstrated that climatic conditions are a key factor in pharmaceuticals uptake and different agricultural practices (soil cropping and drip irrigation) can limit the presence of pharmaceutical compounds in crops.

RESUMO

Applications of biochar to degraded soils have attracted considerable interest because of its capacity to enhance nutrients availability to the plants, sequester C and immobilize organic and inorganic pollutants. A five-year field experiment was conducted in a cotton-wheat system to investigate the effect of different levels of irrigation water salinity (0.3, 5, 10, and 15 dS m-1) and rice straw biochar (0, 2, 4, and 8 t ha-1) on the crop yield and soil functions. Rice straw-derived biochar was applied every year to cotton and its residual effect was observed on wheat. Results of the study indicated that regular irrigation with saline water (5-15 dS m-1) reduced both seed cotton (12-44%) and wheat grain (7-27%) yield. However, application of biochar (2-8 t ha-1) to plots irrigated with saline water showed 6-23% and 13-27% greater seed cotton and wheat grain yield compared with unamended plots, respectively. Likewise, biochar application to soil irrigated with canal or saline water showed significant beneficial effects on soil pH, EC, nutrient metabolism and availability, bulk density, infiltration rate and microbial biomass carbon. Our results indicated that biochar amendment especially at the optimum rate of 4 t ha-1 effectively promoted crop performance by ameliorating soil physical, chemical, and biological properties. In the absence of any chemical amendment for alleviating salinity stress, the results of the present study established that the biochar holds promising potential as a soil amendment in ameliorating soil functions and promoting plant productivity under saline water irrigated conditions.

RESUMO

Surface-water irrigation is one of the most important irrigation methods in areas with abundant surface water. Although this method of irrigation is both economical and convenient, many contaminants are also introduced into the soil-water systems such as organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs). To study the influence of surface-water irrigation on the distribution of OPPs in soil-water systems, 42 water samples (38 groundwater and four surface water) and 85 soil samples (78 profile soil samples and seven topsoil samples) were taken from Shahu in the Jianghan Plain, China. Shahu is a typical Chinese surface-water irrigation district. During sampling, three types of areas were considered: surface-water irrigated areas, groundwater-irrigated areas away from rivers, and non-irrigated areas adjacent to rivers. The results showed that the concentrations of OPPs in the groundwater and soil in the surface-water irrigated farmland were higher than those in groundwater-irrigated farmland. The groundwater flow field and surface-water irrigation were responsible for the OPPs. Thus, it is clear that the surface-water irrigation had a strong influence on the distribution of OPPs in soil-water systems. Principal component analysis for OPPs content in groundwater showed that the key influencing factors on the distribution of OPPs in groundwater were the groundwater flow field and current pesticide use.

RESUMO

The utilization of reclaimed water is one of the effective measures to save water resources. The study of reclaimed water irrigation and the analysis of how heavy metals migrate in the soil, especially their movement laws, have important theoretical and practical significance. It helps to predict the risk of heavy metals in foods, which protects our health and safety. In this paper, we studied the accumulation and distribution of heavy metal Cd in soils with reclaimed water drip irrigation in greenhouses during growing season, comparing the effects with groundwater drip irrigation. The results show that the Cd concentration in the surface soil is the highest on the second day after drip irrigation. It will be the highest on the fourth day in the depth of 100 cm, and then, it will decrease slightly. During the period of the sixth day to the eighth day, the Cd concentrations are similar in each depth, and it is the highest in the depth of 0-40 cm and 80-120 cm, but the Cd concentration decreases with the lower depth below 120 cm. By utilizing proper ways of reclaimed water drip irrigation, the Cd concentration in the deep soil will not violate the standard limits of GB15618-1995, which will not cause Cd pollution.

RESUMO

Reclaimed water is an important water resource for agricultural irrigation. Based on the systematic analysis of experimental data, this paper studies the spatiotemporal transformation and distribution of As in soil-crop system. Through the comparison with groundwater irrigation, reclaimed water irrigation was tested and studied in connection with the greenhouse vegetables in the growing season. The accumulation, distribution and transportation of As in different depths of soil within 7 days after reclaimed water irrigation were analyzed and discussed. The results showed that the concentration of As was the highest on the first day after irrigation; it was the highest at the depth of 100 cm on the third day after irrigation, but its concentration in the topsoil slightly decreased; from the fifth to the seventh day, the concentrations of As in the different layers of soil were almost the same, but it was the highest at the depth of 80-120 cm; and it decreased slightly with the increase in depth when the depth was less than 120 cm. As in soil during the growing season varied as the frequency of irrigation increased. The specific situation was as follows: as the accumulated As in the topsoil increased, the increased As at the depth of 80-120 cm would become less and the concentration of As at 200 cm would fall. Therefore, when the appropriate concentration of reclaimed water is used for irrigation, the concentration of As in the deep layer soil will comply with the standard limits of GB15618-1995 and the irrigation with reclaimed water of appropriate concentration will not cause As pollution.

RESUMO

Reclaimed water reuse has become an important means of alleviating agricultural water shortage worldwide. However, the presence of endocrine disrupters has roused up considerable attention. Barrel test in farmland was conducted to investigate the migration of nonylphenol (NP) and bisphenol A (BPA) in soil-winter wheat system simulating reclaimed water irrigation. Additionally, the health risks on humans were assessed based on US EPA risk assessment model. The migration of NP and BPA decreased from the soil to the winter wheat; the biological concentration factors (BCFs) of NP and BPA in roots, stems, leaves, and grains all decreased with their added concentrations in soils. The BCFs of NP and BPA in roots were greatest (0.60-5.80 and 0.063-1.45, respectively). The average BCFs of NP and BPA in winter wheat showed negative exponential relations to their concentrations in soil. The amounts of NP and BPA in soil-winter wheat system accounted for 8.99-28.24% and 2.35-4.95%, respectively, of the initial amounts added into the soils. The hazard quotient (HQ) for children and adults ranged between 10-6 and 1, so carcinogenic risks could be induced by ingesting winter wheat grains under long-term reclaimed water irrigation.

RESUMO

Spatial variations of soil microbial activities and its relationship with environmental factors are very important for estimating regional soil ecosystem function. Based on field samplings in a typical saline groundwater-irrigated region, spatial variations of soil microbial metabolic activities were investigated. Combined with groundwater quality analysis, the relationship between microbial activities and water salinity was also studied. The results demonstrated that moderate spatial heterogeneity of soil microbial activities presented under the total dissolved solids (TDS) of groundwater ranging from 0.23 to 12.24 g L(-1). Groundwater salinity and microbial activities had almost opposite distribution characteristics: slight saline water was mainly distributed in west Baqu and south Quanshan, while severe saline and briny water were dominant in east Baqu and west Huqu; however, total AWCD was higher in the east-center and southwest of Baqu and east Huqu, while it was lower in east Baqu and northwest Huqu. The results of correlation analyses demonstrated that high-salinity groundwater irrigation had significantly adverse effects on soil microbial activities. Major ions Ca(2+), Mg(2+), Cl(-), and SO4(2-) in groundwater decisively influenced the results. Three carbon sources, carbohydrates, amines, and phenols, which had minor utilization rates in all irrigation districts, were extremely significantly affected by high-salinity groundwater irrigation. The results presented here offer an approach for diagnosing regional soil ecosystem function changes under saline water irrigation.

RESUMO

High-tech surgical energy devices that are used during a single surgery have increased in number and the expense for such disposable units is by no means negligible. We developed a handmade water-irrigating monopolar electrocautery using a Foley catheter to perform liver parenchymal transection. A commonly used 20-24 Fr Foley catheter was cut at a length of about 8 cm. The shaft of the 5 mm ball electrode measuring 13.5 cm in length was then inlaid into the urine drainage channel. The target tissues were cauterized without making an eschar, thereby preventing the adhesion of the electrode to the tissues. A ball electrode with our handmade water irrigation sheath can be made in only a few minutes at a very low cost, using common medical supplies and yielding satisfactory effects comparable to the use of specialized high-tech devices.

RESUMO

A serious environmental problem that threatens soil quality, agricultural productivity, and food safety is heavy metal pollution in water sources. Heavy metal pollution is the main problem in tehsil Pasrur, Sialkot, Pakistan. Present study was arranged to notice the heavy metals in water, soil, forages and buffalo milk. There are seven sites that were used for this experiment. Highest malondialdehyde (MDA) contents (3.00 ± 0.01) were noticed in barseem roots at site 7. Ascorbate Peroxidase (APX) was reached at its peak (1.93 ± 0.01) at site 7 in the fresh barseem. Maximum protein contents (0.36 ± 0.01) were observed in fresh plant samples at site 2. Site 3's buffalo milk samples had the highest Ni content (7.22 ± 0.33 ppm), while Site 3's soil samples had the lowest Cr content (8.89 ± 0.56 ppm), Site 1's plant shoots had the lowest Cr content (27.75 ± 1.98 ppm), and Site 3's water had the highest Cr content (40.07 ± 0.49 ppm). The maximum fat content (5.38 ± 2.32%) was found in the milk of the animals at site 7. The highest density (31.88 ± 6.501%), protein content (3.64 ± 0.33%), lactose content (5.54 ± 0.320%), salt content (0.66 ± 0.1673%), and freezing point (- 0.5814 ± 0.1827 °C) were also observed in the milk from animals at site 7, whereas site 5 displayed the highest water content (0.66 ± 0.1673%) and peak pH value (11.64 ± 0.09). In selected samples, the pollution load index for Ni (which ranged from 0.01 to 1.03 mg/kg) was greater than 1. Site 7 has the highest conductivity value (5.48 ± 0.48). Values for the health risk index varied from 0.000151 to 1.00010 mg/kg, suggesting that eating tainted animal feed may pose health concerns. Significant health concerns arise from metal deposition in the food chain from soil to feed, with nickel having the highest health risk index.

RESUMO

The extreme weather and the deteriorating water environment have exacerbated the crisis of freshwater resource insufficiency. Many studies have shown that salty water could replace freshwater to partly meet the water demand of plants. To study the effects of early-stage drought hardening and late-stage salt stress on tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.), we conducted a 2-year pot experiment. Based on the multi-objective demands of high yield, high quality, and water saving, yield indicators, quality indicators, and a water-saving indicator were selected as evaluation indicators. Three irrigation levels (W1: 85% field capacity (FC), W2: 70% FC, W3: 55% FC) and three salinity levels (S2: 2 g/L, S4: 4 g/L, S6: 6 g/L) were set as nine treatments. In addition, a control treatment (CK: W1, 0 g/L) was added. Each treatment was evaluated and scored by principal component analysis. The results for 2022 and 2023 found the highest scores for CK, W2S2, W3S2 and CK, W2S4, W2S2, respectively. Based on response surface methodology, we constructed composite models of multi-objective demands, whose results indicated that 66-72% FC and 2 g/L salinity were considered the appropriate water-salt combinations for practical production. This paper will be beneficial for maintaining high yield and high quality in tomato production using salty water irrigation.

RESUMO

Agricultural utilization of reclaimed water is considered to be an effective way to solve water shortage and reduce water environmental pollution. Silicon fertilizer can improve crop yield and quality and enhance crop resistance. The effect of foliar spray with silicon fertilizer on phyllosphere microbial communities remains lacking. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted to explore the effects of different types of silicon fertilizer on the composition and diversity of a phyllosphere bacterial community and the abundances of related functional genes in rice irrigated with reclaimed water. The results showed that Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, Bacteroidota, and Verrucomicrobiota dominated the phyllosphere bacteria of rice. The relative abundance of Bacillus was higher than that of other treatments in RIS3. Reclaimed water irrigation significantly increased the relative abundances of the potential pathogens Pantoea and Enterobacter. The unclassified bacteria were also an important part of the bacterial community in the rice phyllosphere. Bacillus, Exiguobacterium, Aeromonas, and Citrobacter were significantly enriched by silicon fertilizer treatments. Functional prediction analysis showed that indicator species were mainly involved in metabolism and degradation functions, and the predicted functional groups of phyllosphere bacteria were attributed to chemoheterotrophy, aerobic chemoheterotrophy, nitrate reduction, and fermentation. Quantitative PCR results showed that AOA, AOB, and nifH genes were at low abundance levels in all treatments, and nirK genes was not significantly different among treatments. These results contribute to the in-depth understanding of the effects of foliar spray silicon fertilizer on the bacterial community structure and diversity of rice phyllosphere and provide a theoretical basis for the application of silicon fertilizer in reclaimed water irrigation agriculture.

RESUMO

In cold regions, the low irrigation water temperature is an important factor of low-temperature stress for greenhouse crops. In this paper, an irrigation water-heating system (IWHS) is proposed to increase the water temperature by utilizing the excess heat in the solar greenhouse. The heat-collection capacity of the system was analyzed by screening the IWHS process parameters in a Chinese solar greenhouse, and a warm-water irrigation experiment for lettuce was conducted. The results demonstrated that the water temperature increased with the increase in wind speed, and the increase in daily average water temperature reached the maximum value of 8.6 °C at 4.5 m/s wind speed. When the heat exchanger was installed at a height of 3.0 m, the collector capacity increased by 17.8% and 6.0% compared with the heating capacity at 0 m and 1.5 m, respectively, and the operation termination water temperature was 22.0-32.2 °C and its coefficient of performance (COP) was optimal. Surface darkening of the heat exchanger did not affect the heat-collection capacity of the system. Using the IWHS effectively improved the temperature of lettuce irrigation water in the Chinese solar greenhouse. The increased frequency of warm-water irrigation significantly promoted lettuce growth and increased the average yield per plant by 15.9%. Therefore, IWHS effectively increased the irrigation water temperature in a Chinese solar greenhouse in winter. Improving the system would enhance its economic and application value.

RESUMO

Saline water irrigation (SWI) plays an important role in alleviating water resource shortages. At the same time, the salt input of irrigation water affects soil microorganisms which participate in various ecological processes of terrestrial ecosystems. However, the responses of soil microbial functional potential to long-term SWI remains unclear. Therefore, Metagenomics method was utilized in cotton fields under long-term SWI to reveal the microbial functional profiles associated with soil carbon and nitrogen cycles. Results indicated that SWI impacted the microbial functional profiles of soil carbon and nitrogen cycles in the cotton fields significantly. Especially, irrigation water salinity inhibited the relative abundances of sacC and vanB, which are soil carbon degradation genes. SWI also affected the functional gene abundance of nitrogen degradation, dissimilatory nitrate reduction, and nitrification. Moreover, SWI significantly increased the abundance of Candidatus_Cloacimonetes in both carbon and nitrogen cycles. In the discussion, we used person analysis found that soil salinity, pH, and ammonium nitrogen were important factors affecting the abundance of functional genes and microbial taxa. Overall, this study indicated that long-term SWI significantly influenced specific microbial functional genes and taxa abundance, which may lead to predictable outcomes for soil carbon and nitrogen cycling, and is of great importance in exploring the impact of SWI on soil environments.

RESUMO

Introduction: The stay-green (SG) or delayed leaf senescence enables crop plants to maintain their green leaves and photosynthetic capacity for a longer time after flowering. It is considered an important trait in maize breeding, which has contributed to gain in grain yield of modern varieties. It has been also used to improve the tolerance to drought and deficiencies in nitrogen fertilization (NF). However, the objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of water irrigation (WI), NF, and plant density (PD) on SG and the effect of SG on agronomic traits in maize. Methods: Four SG lines and four non-stay-green (NSG) lines were evaluated in four contrasting environments under two WI, three NF, and two PD levels. Results and discussion: As expected, the chlorophyll content of leaves at 45 days after flowering (Chlo45) was, on average, higher in the SG group of lines. The difference in Chlo45 between the SG and NSG genotypes was consistent across WI, NF, and PD and the environments. This is indicative that internal or developmental factors were more important than external signals in controlling the senescence. The effect of SG increasing thousand-kernel weight, stover yield at harvest, or moisture was not influenced by WI, NF, or PD but was altered by the background environment. Our results have implications for the application of SG as a secondary trait for enhancing abiotic stress tolerance. Future studies could consider a wider range of environmental conditions to assess the performance of SG traits under different climatic and soil conditions.
