A comparison was made of the supercooling points (SCPs) of questing Dermacentor variabilis adults from two populations located ca. 800 km apart on the Canadian prairies. This is also the first study to examine whether there are seasonal fluctuations in the SCP of questing D. variabilis adults. The SCPs of adult ticks from Lizard Lake Community Pasture, a recently established population in west-central Saskatchewan, varied over spring and summer, with the median SCP warming over time. In addition, the SCPs of ticks from Lizard Lake Community Pasture were significantly higher than those of adult ticks collected from Sandy Hook in Manitoba, a population that has been established for decades. The off-host survival of adults from Sandy Hook between summer and spring has been shown previously to be significantly greater than that of adults from Lizard Lake Community Pasture. The findings of the present study suggest that there may be geographical variation in the SCPs of D. variabilis adults which may be associated with differences in overwinter survival. The relatively low SCPs of questing D. variabilis adults, and the ability of some adults to survive off-host during winter, may be factors contributing to the range expansion of this tick species in Canada.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Secondary prevention strategies reduce disease progression to heart failure. Rural cardiac patients typically have less access to health care resources to support them in managing secondary prevention, and services to improve quality of life tend to be lacking in rural settings. The study aim was to examine the process that rural cardiac patients go through to access health care and cardiac rehabilitation (CR) following myocardial infarction (MI). In-depth interviews with 11 post-MI participants using Straussian grounded theory were undertaken. Analysis revealed a linear process from hospital discharge to maintaining health. There were five elements: comfort with health information, relationship with health care providers, social support, taking ownership, and availability of/for CR. The core category was "being uncertain." Findings can be used to identify ways to improve access and address uncertainty stemming from a lack of perceived information and supports following discharge.

Blackleg, caused by Leptosphaeria maculans, is a major disease of canola in Canada, Australia, and Europe. For effective deployment of resistant varieties and disease management, it is crucial to understand the population structure of L. maculans. In this study, we analyzed L. maculans isolates from commercial fields in western Canada from 2014 to 2016 for the presence and frequency of avirulence (Avr) genes. A total of 1,584 isolates were examined for the presence of Avr genes AvrLm1, AvrLm2, AvrLm3, AvrLm4, AvrLm6, AvrLm7, AvrLm9, AvrLepR1, AvrLepR2, and AvrLmS via a set of differential host genotypes carrying known resistance genes and a PCR assay. Several Avr genes showed a higher frequency in the pathogen population, such as AvrLm6 and AvrLm7, which were present in >90% of isolates, whereas AvrLm3, AvrLm9, and AvrLepR2 showed frequencies of <10%. A total of 189 races (different combinations of Avr genes) were detected, with Avr-2-4-6-7-S, Avr-1-4-6-7, and Avr-2-4-6-7 as the three predominant races. When the effect of crop rotation was assessed, only a 3-year rotation showed a significantly higher frequency of AvrLm2 relative to shorter rotations. This study provides the information for producers to select effective canola varieties for blackleg management and for breeders to deploy new R genes in disease resistance breeding in western Canada.

RESUMO

The RiboWest Conference brings together RNA researchers in Canada with the 2-fold goals of fostering internationally competitive RNA research and of training the next generation of scientists. The 14th Annual RiboWest conference (RiboWest 2018) was held at the University of Lethbridge (Lethbridge, Alberta) from June 10th to 13th, 2018. This meeting was focused on all major aspects of RNA research, ranging from understanding the cellular role of RNA, studying RNA interactions and structures, and employing them as a therapeutic tool. The invited keynote speakers (5) provided insights into the wide-range of RNA-based research. One of the unique features of this conference was that the majority of the oral presentations were given by the trainees (undergraduate/graduate students and postdoctoral researchers). Hosted by the Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute (ARRTI) at the University of Lethbridge as the leading center of RNA research in Western Canada, the RiboWest 2018 was well attended by researchers from across the country (>110 attendees in total). This conference proceedings editorial presents the overview of the conference, and briefly introduces articles published in this special issue of Biochemistry and Cell Biology.

Communicating openly and directly about illness comes easily for some patients, whereas for others fear of disclosure keeps them silent. In this article, we discuss findings about the role of keeping secrets regarding health and illness. These findings were part of a larger project on how people with life-threatening illnesses re-story their lives. A narrative approach drawing on Frank's dialogical narrative analysis and Riesman's inductive approach was used. Interviews were conducted with 32 participants from three populations: chronic kidney disease, HIV/AIDS, and cancer. Findings include case exemplars which suggest keeping secrets is a social practice that acts along continuums of connecting-isolating, protecting-harming, and empowering-imprisoning. Keeping secrets about illness is a normative practice that is negotiated with each encounter. Findings call health-care providers to rethink the role of secrets for patients by considering patient privilege, a person's right to take the lead in revealing or concealing their health and illness experience.

Although male suicide has received research attention, the gendered experiences of men bereaved by male suicide are poorly understood. Addressing this knowledge gap, we share findings drawn from a photovoice study of Canadian-based men who had lost a male friend, partner, or family member to suicide. Two categories depicting the men's overall account of the suicide were inductively derived: (a) unforeseen suicide and (b) rationalized suicide. The "unforeseen suicides" referred to deaths that occurred without warning wherein participants spoke to tensions between having no idea that the deceased was at risk while reflecting on what they might have done to prevent the suicide. In contrast, "rationalized suicides" detailed an array of preexisting risk factors including mental illness and/or substance overuse to discuss cause-effect scenarios. Commonalities in unforeseen and rationalized suicides are discussed in the overarching theme, "managing emotions" whereby participants distanced themselves, but also drew meaning from the suicide.

An outbreak of Legionnaires' disease occurred in an inner city district in Calgary, Canada. This outbreak spanned a 3-week period in November-December 2012, and a total of eight cases were identified. Four of these cases were critically ill requiring intensive care admission but there was no associated mortality. All cases tested positive for Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (LP1) by urinary antigen testing. Five of the eight patients were culture positive for LP1 from respiratory specimens. These isolates were further identified as Knoxville monoclonal subtype and sequence subtype ST222. Whole-genome sequencing revealed that the isolates differed by no more than a single vertically acquired single nucleotide variant, supporting a single point-source outbreak. Hypothesis-based environmental investigation and sampling was conducted; however, a definitive source was not identified. Geomapping of case movements within the affected urban sector revealed a 1·0 km common area of potential exposure, which coincided with multiple active construction sites that used water spray to minimize transient dust. This community point-source Legionnaires' disease outbreak is unique due to its ST222 subtype and occurrence in a relatively dry and cold weather setting in Western Canada. This report suggests community outbreaks of Legionella should not be overlooked as a possibility during late autumn and winter months in the Northern Hemisphere.

Despite attention paid to substance use during pregnancy, understandings of young Aboriginal women's experiences based on their perspectives have been virtually absent in the published literature. This study's objective was to understand the life experiences of pregnant-involved young Aboriginal women with alcohol and drugs. Semi-structured interviews to gather life histories were conducted with 23 young Aboriginal women who had experiences with pregnancy, and alcohol and drug use. Transcribed interviews were analyzed for themes to describe the social and historical contexts of women's experiences and their self-representations. The findings detail women's strategies for survival, inner strength, and capacities for love, healing, and resilience. Themes included the following: intersectional identities, life histories of trauma (abuse, violence, and neglect; intergenerational trauma; separations and connections), the ever-presence of alcohol and drugs, and the highs and lows of pregnancy and mothering. The findings have implications for guiding policy and interventions for supporting women and their families.

Rural and remote communities of Western Canada have struggled to recruit and retain nursing professionals since the turn of the twentieth century. Existing literature has identified the unique challenges of rural nursing due to the shifting context of rural and remote nursing practice. The objective of this narrative review is to explore the history of rural and remote nursing to better understand the contextual influences shaping rural nursing shortages in Western Canada. This narrative review compared 27 sources of scholarly and historical evidence on the nature of rural nursing practices and recruitment and retention methods following the First World War until 2023. The findings suggest that the complex nature of rural nursing practice is a consistent challenge that has intersected with the long-standing power inequities that are inherent in rural marginalization, political influences, the nursing profession, social structures, and organizational design, to perpetuate rural nursing shortages throughout the past century. Integration and collaboration are needed to reduce systemic marginalization and develop effective and sustainable solutions to reduce nursing shortages in rural and remote areas of Western Canada.

This study examined the influence of management practices and herd demographics on calf mortality proportions in Western Canadian cow-calf operations, utilizing data from the second Western Canadian Cow-calf Survey. The survey was conducted between October 23, 2017, and February 28, 2018. The survey, which was open to all cow-calf producers across Western Canada, provided producer-reported data regarding calf death loss and corresponding herd-level factors. A fractional logit model was employed to identify significant factors associated with calf mortality proportions. The findings revealed that shorter breeding seasons (<63 days), calves born within the same season, and regular pregnancy checks for breeding females were negatively associated with calf mortality proportions. Conversely, regular breeding soundness evaluations for breeding bulls, traditional weaning methods, and vaccinating heifers for scours showed positive associations with increased calf mortality proportions. Herd operations where dams were vaccinated against clostridial and bovine respiratory diseases had lower calf mortality proportions. Notably, operations with experienced primary decision-makers holding off-farm jobs had lower predicted calf mortality proportions compared to those managed by full-time cattle producers. Higher predicted calf mortality proportions were observed in operations employing a backgrounding system. The study's limitations included potential biases due to its cross-sectional nature and reliance on producer-reported data, which might lead to an underestimation of calf mortality proportions. Also, the limited sample size and missing data might have affected the statistical significance of some variables. This study contributed to the research on cow-calf operation by using a fractional logit model to analyze the correlation between risk factors and calf mortality proportions, and by identifying novel herd-level risk factors. It provided a basis for future research aimed at developing empirically-based management strategies to optimize calf health outcomes.

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is one the most globally destructive fungal diseases in wheat and other small grains, causing a reduction in grain yield by 10-70%. The present study was conducted in a panel of historical and modern Canadian spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) varieties and lines to identify new sources of FHB resistance and map associated quantitative trait loci (QTLs). We evaluated 249 varieties and lines for reaction to disease incidence, severity, and visual rating index (VRI) in seven environments by artificially spraying a mixture of four Fusarium graminearum isolates. A subset of 198 them were genotyped with the Wheat 90K iSelect single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) array. Genome-wide association mapping performed on the overall best linear unbiased estimators (BLUE) computed from all seven environments and the International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium (IWGSC) RefSeq v2.0 physical map of 26,449 polymorphic SNPs out of the 90K identified sixteen FHB resistance QTLs that individually accounted for 5.7-10.2% of the phenotypic variance. The positions of two of the FHB resistance QTLs overlapped with plant height and flowering time QTLs. Four of the QTLs (QFhb.dms-3B.1, QFhb.dms-5A.5, QFhb.dms-5A.7, and QFhb.dms-6A.4) were simultaneously associated with disease incidence, severity, and VRI, which accounted for 27.0-33.2% of the total phenotypic variance in the combined environments. Three of the QTLs (QFhb.dms-2A.2, QFhb.dms-2D.2, and QFhb.dms-5B.8) were associated with both incidence and VRI and accounted for 20.5-22.1% of the total phenotypic variance. In comparison with the VRI of the checks, we identified four highly resistant and thirty-three moderately resistant lines and varieties. The new FHB sources of resistance and the physical map of the associated QTLs would provide wheat breeders valuable information towards their efforts in developing improved varieties in western Canada.

Abstract: The interaction of natural and hydraulic fractures may facilitate lateral fluid propagation in an unconventional reservoir resulting in fast fluid pressure transmission from treatment wells to a fault zone and potential fault shear slip reactivation and associated induced seismicity. Several induced earthquakes (up to 4.1 Mw) occurred since 2013 during hydraulic fracturing of the Upper Devonian Duvernay Formation in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. The mechanism of lateral fluid migration in the unconventional reservoir is not well understood. The current study aims to investigate the interaction of natural fractures and hydraulic fractures for the case study in the area south of Fox Creek, where a linear zone of induced earthquakes (up to 3.9 Mw) occurred along a fault in 2015 during hydraulic fracturing of horizontal wells. We analyze the growth of hydraulic fractures in presence of natural fractures, the impact of resulting complex fracture network on fluid transmission and fluid pressure buildup around the treatment wells. Hydraulic fracture modeling (HFM), reservoir simulations and 3D coupled reservoir-geomechanical modeling are applied to match the timing of hydraulic fracture propagation and transmitted fluid pressure increase in the fault zone versus induced earthquake occurrence. HFM results are verified by microseismic clouds distribution. Reservoir simulations are validated by a history matching of fluid injection volume and bottomhole pressure data. Additional HFM simulations are carried out to optimize the pumping schedule in the studied well pad that would help to prevent hydraulic fractures reaching the fault and minimize the risk of induced seismicity. Article highlights: Stress anisotropy and simulated natural fractures impact lateral growth of complex hydraulic fractures and reservoir pressure buildup.Predicted fluid pressure transmission to a fault zone results in fault dextral shear slip reactivation matching induced seismicity.Optimized pumping schedule helps to minimize risks of fault reactivation and induced seismicity while preserving overall pad performance.

BACKGROUND: Despite the existence of universal health care for Canadians, health inequalities persist and those residing in rural regions experience disparities when accessing appropriate services. To enhance access, a teletrauma program was implemented in a rural northern region in western Canada, connecting rural clinicians to urban emergency physicians and trauma specialists during emergency cases. OBJECTIVE: To explore reasons why teletrauma is used in rural contexts from the perspectives of service users and stakeholders. METHODS: 14 semi-structured interviews were conducted with stakeholders, clinicians (physicians, specialists), management, and researchers. Interpretive description methodology guided the study and analysis, and findings were organized thematically. RESULTS: Teletrauma was used to connect clinicians, manage complex cases when weather or distance delayed transfer, and to enable appropriate and timely treatment locally. Teletrauma was more likely to be activated when clinicians were uncomfortable with clinical management, when relationships were established, and when technology was familiar and easy to use. CONCLUSIONS: Teletrauma is more than just the technology that is deployed. The establishment of relationships between teletrauma users was vital to the success of teletrauma. To design effective, integrated, and sustainable services, rural clinicians must remain at the center of teletrauma models.

OBJECTIVE: To compare characteristics of nursing home (NH) residents by age categories in Western Canada. DESIGN: A cross-sectional, correlational analysis of secondary data. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: 89,231 residents living in Western Canada NHs in the provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, and British Columbia in 2016 and 2017. METHODS: Resident characteristics (age, sex, marital status, body mass index, medical diagnoses, cognitive function, physical function, depressive symptoms) came from the Resident Assessment Instrument-Minimum Data Set 2.0 and were analyzed using chi-square, analysis of variance, and post hoc pairwise tests. Human developmental stage age categories were used to create 5 age groups: 18-34, 35-50, 51-64, 65-80, and 81 years and older. RESULTS: The demographics, medical diagnoses, cognitive function, and physical function characteristics of NH residents among 5 age groups differed considerably (all P < .001). Residents aged 18-34 years were predominately male, never married, with a higher incidence of paralysis and traumatic brain injury. Residents aged 35-50 years had a higher incidence of stroke and multiple sclerosis, and residents aged 51-64 years mainly were morbidly obese and more prone to depression. Residents aged 65-80 years were predominately married and more prone to diabetes, and residents aged 81 years and older were predominately widowed, with a higher incidence of dementia compared with others. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Findings describe the uniqueness of younger NH age groups and indicate that the youngest NH residents often have the severe disability and a modest support system (as defined by partnered status) compared to older residents in NHs. Future studies must analyze longitudinal data that track the growth of, and changes in, residents' health and functional status.

The likelihood of success in developing modern cultivars depend on multiple factors, including the identification of suitable parents to initiate new crosses, and characterizations of genomic regions associated with target traits. The objectives of the present study were to (a) determine the best economic weights of four major wheat diseases (leaf spot, common bunt, leaf rust, and stripe rust) and grain yield for multi-trait restrictive linear phenotypic selection index (RLPSI), (b) select the top 10% cultivars and lines (hereafter referred as genotypes) with better resistance to combinations of the four diseases and acceptable grain yield as potential parents, and (c) map genomic regions associated with resistance to each disease using genome-wide association study (GWAS). A diversity panel of 196 spring wheat genotypes was evaluated for their reaction to stripe rust at eight environments, leaf rust at four environments, leaf spot at three environments, common bunt at two environments, and grain yield at five environments. The panel was genotyped with the Wheat 90K SNP array and a few KASP SNPs of which we used 23,342 markers for statistical analyses. The RLPSI analysis performed by restricting the expected genetic gain for yield displayed significant (p < 0.05) differences among the 3125 economic weights. Using the best four economic weights, a subset of 22 of the 196 genotypes were selected as potential parents with resistance to the four diseases and acceptable grain yield. GWAS identified 37 genomic regions, which included 12 for common bunt, 13 for leaf rust, 5 for stripe rust, and 7 for leaf spot. Each genomic region explained from 6.6 to 16.9% and together accounted for 39.4% of the stripe rust, 49.1% of the leaf spot, 94.0% of the leaf rust, and 97.9% of the common bunt phenotypic variance combined across all environments. Results from this study provide valuable information for wheat breeders selecting parental combinations for new crosses to develop improved germplasm with enhanced resistance to the four diseases as well as the physical positions of genomic regions that confer resistance, which facilitates direct comparisons for independent mapping studies in the future.

Some previous studies have assessed the predictive ability of genome-wide selection on stripe (yellow) rust resistance in wheat, but the effect of genotype by environment interaction (GEI) in prediction accuracies has not been well studied in diverse genetic backgrounds. Here, we compared the predictive ability of a model based on phenotypic data only (M1), the main effect of phenotype and molecular markers (M2), and a model that incorporated GEI (M3) using three cross-validations (CV1, CV2, and CV0) scenarios of interest to breeders in six spring wheat populations. Each population was evaluated at three to eight field nurseries and genotyped with either the DArTseq technology or the wheat 90K single nucleotide polymorphism arrays, of which a subset of 1,058- 23,795 polymorphic markers were used for the analyses. In the CV1 scenario, the mean prediction accuracies of the M1, M2, and M3 models across the six populations varied from -0.11 to -0.07, from 0.22 to 0.49, and from 0.19 to 0.48, respectively. Mean accuracies obtained using the M3 model in the CV1 scenario were significantly greater than the M2 model in two populations, the same in three populations, and smaller in one population. In both the CV2 and CV0 scenarios, the mean prediction accuracies of the three models varied from 0.53 to 0.84 and were not significantly different in all populations, except the Attila/CDC Go in the CV2, where the M3 model gave greater accuracy than both the M1 and M2 models. Overall, the M3 model increased prediction accuracies in some populations by up to 12.4% and decreased accuracy in others by up to 17.4%, demonstrating inconsistent results among genetic backgrounds that require considering each population separately. This is the first comprehensive genome-wide prediction study that investigated details of the effect of GEI on stripe rust resistance across diverse spring wheat populations.

BACKGROUND: The ability of infective larvae of cattle gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) species to overwinter on pastures in northerly climatic zones with very cold dry winters is poorly understood. This is an important knowledge gap with critical implications for parasite risk assessment and control. METHODS: Infective third-stage larvae (L3) were quantified in samples of fecal pats, together with adjacent grass and soil, before and after winter on three farms in southern, central and northern Alberta. Nemabiome ITS2 metabarcoding was then performed on the harvested L3 populations to determine the species composition. Finally, parasite-free tracer calves were used to investigate if the L3 surviving the winter could infect calves and develop to adult worms in spring. RESULTS: Farm level monitoring, using solar powered weather stations, revealed that ground temperatures were consistently higher, and less variable, than the air temperatures; minimum winter air and ground temperatures were - 32.5 °C and - 24.7 °C respectively. In spite of the extremely low minimum temperatures reached, L3 were recovered from fecal pats and grass before and after winter with only a 38% and 61% overall reduction over the winter, respectively. Nemabiome ITS2 metabarcoding assay revealed that the proportion of L3 surviving the winter was high for both Cooperia oncophora and Ostertagia ostertagi although survival of the former species was statistically significantly higher than the latter. Nematodirus helvetinaus and Trichostrongylus axei could be detected after winter whereas Haemonchus placei L3 could not overwinter at all. Adult C. oncophora, O. ostertagi and N. helvetianus could be recovered from tracer calves grazing after the winter. CONCLUSIONS: The largest proportion of L3 were recovered from fecal pats suggesting this is important refuge for L3 survival. Results also show that L3 of several GIN parasite species can survive relatively efficiently on pastures even in the extreme winter conditions in western Canada. Tracer calf experiments confirmed that overwintered L3 of both C. oncophora and O. ostertagi were capable of establishing a patent infection in the following spring. These results have important implications for the epidemiology, risk of production impact and the design of effective control strategies. The work also illustrates the value of applying ITS2 nemabiome metabarcoding to environmental samples.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) contaminate pristine, alpine environments through long-range transport in the atmosphere and glacier trapping. To study variation in POPs levels in western Canada, we measured levels in the prey (fish) of osprey (Pandion haliaetus) during 1999-2004, and compared those to levels in eggs and chicks. Values in fish muscle (representing human consumption) correlated with whole carcasses (wildlife consumption) for all POPs, except toxaphene, allowing us to pool data. Biomagnification factors for osprey eggs were much higher than published values from Oregon, reflecting differences in local diet. We factored baseline-corrected food chain variation by using amino acid-specific analysis of osprey eggs, illustrating how top predators (ospreys) can indicate both ecosystem-wide baselines and contamination. Given that our biomagnification factors were so different from those for the same species from a nearby site, we argue that trophic magnification factors derived from baseline-corrected δ15N are likely a more accurate method for estimating contamination. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (ΣDDT) concentrations were greatest in rainbow trout from a small lake at 1800 m, and those levels exceeded wildlife and human health guidelines. Indeed, once sites with known agricultural inputs were eliminated, elevation, percent lipids and baseline-corrected δ15N (from amino acid specific isotope values) best predicted ΣDDT. Baseline-corrected, but not bulk, δ15N was the main predictor of polychlorinated biphenyls (ΣPCB). Total toxaphene was consistently the major contaminant after ΣPCB and ΣDDT in osprey eggs, and was present in many fish samples. We concluded that toxaphene arrived from long range deposition due to high proportions of Parlar 40-50 congeners. The only exception was Paul Lake, where toxaphene was used as a piscicide, with a high concentrations of the Hex-Sed and Hep-Sed congeners at that site. We conclude that long-range transport and trophic position, not melting glaciers, were important determinants of some legacy POPs in fish and wildlife in alpine Canada.

A disease with a sudden drop in egg production and shell-less eggs called, shell-less egg syndrome (SES) has been observed in Western Canada egg layer flocks since 2010. The etiology of this disease is not known. We hypothesize that SES is caused by an infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) strain since it is known that IBV replicates in the shell gland causing various eggshell abnormalities. In this study, we screened egg layer flocks, in the provinces of Alberta (AB) and Saskatchewan (SK), with and without a history of SES for the presence of IBV infection. During 2015⁻2016, a total of 27 egg layer flocks were screened in AB (n = 7) and SK (n = 20). Eighty-one percent of the screened flocks (n = 22) were positive for IBV infection. Thirty of these isolates were successfully characterized using molecular tools targeting the most variable spike (S) 1 gene. IBV isolates from this study clustered into three genotypes based on partial S1 gene variability. The majority of the IBV isolates (70%) were Massachusetts (Mass) type, and the rest were either Connecticut (Conn) type or an uncharacterized genotype with genetic characteristics of Mass and Conn types. Since the majority of the IBV isolates included within the Mass type, we used a Mass type IBV isolate to reproduce SES in specific pathogen free (SPF) white leghorn chickens in lay. Further studies are warranted to investigate whether other IBV isolates can cause SES, to clarify the pathogenesis of SES and to develop a vaccine in order to prevent SES as observed in Western Canadian layer flocks.

Understanding the complex interactions of competition, climate warming-induced drought stress, and photosynthetic productivity on the radial growth of trees is central to linking climate change impacts on tree growth, stand structure and in general, forest productivity. Using a mixed modeling approach, a stand-level photosynthetic production model, climate, stand competition and tree-ring data from mixedwood stands in western Canada, we investigated the radial growth response of white spruce [Picea glauca (Moench.) Voss] to simulated annual photosynthetic production, simulated drought stress, and tree and stand level competition. The long-term (~80-year) radial growth of white spruce was constrained mostly by competition, as measured by total basal area, with minor effects from drought. There was no relation of competition and drought on tree growth but dominant trees increased their growth more strongly to increases in modeled photosynthetic productivity, indicating asymmetric competition. Our results indicate a co-limitation of drought and climatic factors inhibiting photosynthetic productivity for radial growth of white spruce in western Canada. These results illustrate how a modeling approach can separate the complex factors regulating both multi-decadal average radial growth and interannual radial growth variations of white spruce, and contribute to advance our understanding on sustainable management of mixedwood boreal forests in western Canada.
