Anthropogenic activities have reshaped biodiversity on islands worldwide. However, it remains unclear how island attributes and land-use change interactively shape multiple facets of island biodiversity through community assembly processes. To answer this, we conducted bird surveys in various land-use types (mainly forest and farmland) using transects on 34 oceanic land-bridge islands in the largest archipelago of China. We found that bird species richness increased with island area and decreased with isolation, regardless of the intensity of land-use change. However, forest-dominated habitats exhibited lower richness than farmland-dominated habitats. Island bird assemblages generally comprised species that share more similar traits or evolutionary histories (i.e. functional and/or phylogenetic clustering) than expected if assemblages were randomly assembled. Contrary to our expectations, we observed that bird assemblages in forest-dominated habitats were more clustered on large and close islands, whereas assemblages in farmland-dominated habitats were more clustered on small islands. These contrasting results indicate that land-use change interacts with island biogeography to alter the community assembly of birds on inhabited islands. Our findings emphasize the importance of incorporating human-modified habitats when examining the community assembly of island biota, and further suggest that agricultural landscapes on large islands may play essential roles in protecting countryside island biodiversity.

The Equilibrium Theory of Island Biogeography postulates that larger and closer islands support higher biodiversity through the dynamic balance of colonization and extinction processes. The negative diversity-isolation (i.e. the distance to the mainland) relationship is derived based on the assumption that the mainland is the only source pool for island biotas. However, nearby islands could also act as species sources for focal islands via a source effect. In this study, we move a further step and hypothesize that nearby islands may reduce bird colonizers of the focal island and diminish its biodiversity, resulting in a negative target effect. To test our hypothesis, we assessed the effects of island area and isolation (metrics considering both the mainland and nearby islands) on taxonomic (i.e. species richness), functional and phylogenetic diversity of terrestrial breeding birds on 42 islands in the largest archipelago of China, the Zhoushan Archipelago. Furthermore, we compared the predictive power of the distance to the large island under a set of relative area thresholds and the relative area of nearby islands on species richness under a set of distance thresholds to explore the role of nearby islands as a source and/or target island. We found that island area had a positive effect on species richness, phylogenetic diversity and functional diversity, while the distance to the mainland had a negative effect only on species richness. Species richness on the focal island increased with increasing distance to the nearest larger island, indicating the negative target effect. Furthermore, the negative target effect depended on the area of nearby islands relative to the area of the focal island. Our finding of the negative target effect suggests islands located between the mainland and the focal island can be not only sources or stepping stones, but also colonization targets. This result demonstrates the importance of considering multiple geographical attributes of islands in island biogeographic studies, especially the characteristics related to source and/or target effects.

Nested subset pattern (nestedness) has been raised to explain the distribution of species on islands and habitat fragments for over 60 years. However, previous studies on nestedness focused on species richness and composition and overlooked the role of species traits and phylogeny in generating and explaining nestedness. To address this gap, we sampled amphibians on 37 land-bridge islands in the largest archipelago of China, the Zhoushan Archipelago, to explore nestedness as well as the underlying causal processes through three facets of diversity, that is, taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity. The taxonomic nestedness was measured through organizing the species incidence matrix to achieve a maximum value, while the functional and phylogenetic nestedness were quantified by incorporating the similarity of species in terms of their ecological traits and phylogeny. We also obtained six island characteristics and seven species traits as predictors of nestedness. Amphibian metacommunities were significantly nested in these three facets of diversity. When relating different predictors to nestedness, island area, habitat diversity and species traits were highly correlated with taxonomic nestedness. Moreover, island area and habitat diversity significantly influenced functional and phylogenetic nestedness. Therefore, the results support the selective extinction and habitat nestedness hypotheses. Interestingly, although we did not observe significant influences of island isolation on taxonomic nestedness, functional and phylogenetic diversities were significantly higher than expected when matrices were ordered by increasing distance to mainland. The result suggests that there are more functionally and phylogenetically diverse species on less-isolated islands, reflecting a selective colonization process overlooked by the traditional analysis of taxonomic nestedness. Although the three facets of nestedness and underlying processes were largely congruent, we detected the distance-related functional and phylogenetic nestedness for amphibian assemblages. Therefore, we highlight that a framework that simultaneously considers taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic nestedness can contribute to a complementary understanding of nestedness processes. In addition, it also improves our ability to conserve insular biodiversity from different perspectives.

Nested subset pattern (nestedness) is an important part of the theoretical framework of island biogeography and community ecology. However, most previous studies often used nestedness metrics or randomization algorithms that are vulnerable to type I error. In this study, we investigated the nestedness of lizard assemblages on 37 islands in the Zhoushan Archipelago, China. We used the line-transect method to survey species occurrence, abundance, and habitat types of lizards on 37 islands during 2 breeding seasons in 2021 and 2022. We applied the nested metric WNODF and the conservative rc null model to control for type I error and quantify the significance of nestedness. Spearman rank correlations were used to evaluate the role of 4 habitat variables (island area, 2 isolation indices, and habitat diversity) and 4 ecological traits (body size, geographic range size, clutch size, and minimum area requirement) in generating nestedness. The results of WNODF analyses showed that lizard assemblages were significantly nested. The habitat-by-site matrix estimated by the program NODF was also significantly nested, supporting the habitat nestedness hypothesis. The nestedness of lizard assemblages were significantly correlated with island area, habitat diversity, clutch size, and minimum area requirement. Overall, our results suggest that selective extinction and habitat nestedness were the main drivers of lizard nestedness in our system. In contrast, the nestedness of lizard assemblages was not due to passive sampling or selective colonization. To maximize the number of species preserved, our results indicate that we should protect both large islands with diverse habitats and species with large area requirement and clutch size.

Island coastal zones are often mistakenly perceived as "ecological desert". Actually, they harbour unique communities of organisms. The biodiversity on islands is primarily influenced by the effects of area and isolation (distance from the mainland), which mainly focused on plants and animals, encompassing studies of entire islands. However, the application of area and isolation effects to soil microorganisms on island beaches across the intertidal zones remains largely unexplored. We hypothesized that island area and isolation shape soil bacterial communities by regulating soil properties on island beaches, due to the fact that local soil properties might be strongly influenced by land-use, which may vary among islands of different sizes and isolations. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a study on 108 plots spanning 4 intertidal zones on 9 representative island beaches within Zhoushan Archipelago, eastern China. We employed one-way ANOVA and Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD) test to assess the differences in diversity, composition of soil bacterial communities and soil properties among intertidal zones. Redundancy analysis and structural equation modelling (SEM) were used to examine the direct and indirect impacts of beach area and isolation on soil bacterial communities. Our findings revealed that the area and isolation did not significantly influence soil bacterial diversity and the relative abundance of dominant soil bacterial phyla. However, soil nitrogen (soil N), phosphorus (soil P), organic carbon (SOC), available potassium content (soil AK), and electrical conductivity (soil EC) showed significant increases with the area and isolation. As the tidal gradient increased on beaches, soil bacterial OTU richness, Chao 1, and relative abundance of Planctomycetota and Crenarchaeota decreased, while relative abundance of other soil bacterial phyla increased. We found that influences of island area and isolation shape soil bacterial communities on beaches by regulating soil properties, particularly soil moisture, salinity, and nutrients, all of which are also influenced by area and isolation. Island with larger areas and in lower intertidal zones, characterized by higher soil water content (SWC), soil EC, and soil AK, exhibited greater soil bacterial diversity and fewer dominant soil bacterial phyla. Conversely, in the higher intertidal zones with vegetation containing higher soil N and SOC, lower soil bacterial diversity and more dominant soil bacterial phyla were observed. These findings have the potential to enhance our new understanding of how island biogeography in interpreting island biome patterns.

The concentration, constitution, distribution, possible sources, and associated consumption risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in four marine fishes in the Zhoushan Archipelago were investigated. The concentrations of PAHs in the edible muscle of these four fishes ranged from 34.7 to 108 ng/g wet weight. Four-ring and six-ring PAH congeners constitute the most and least percentages of the total PAHs, respectively. The highest PAH concentrations were found in Mugil cephalus, followed by Sebastiscus marmoratus, Lateolabrax maculatus, and Collichthys lucidus. The highest PAH concentrations were found at the sampling island Liuheng, followed by Gouqi, Qushan, Dongji, and Zhujiajian. PAH concentrations in wet weight were remarkably different among these four fish species but not among different locations. High-molecular-weight congeners predominated the PAH composition pattern in most of the samples. Results showed that the consumption of M. cephalus might have potential carcinogenic risk. This study provided baseline data on PAH concentrations in seafood and consequent human consumption risk.

Marine microorganisms play an irreplaceable role in removing spilled oil. Zhoushan archipelago has one of the busiest ports and oil stockpiles in China. However, little is known about which and how fast oil-degrading microorganisms could biodegrade spilled oil here. By combining 14C-/3H-based radiotracer assays and MiSeq sequencing, we report the successive pattern of microbial oil-degrading activities and community compositions. The biodegradation rates of alkanes and PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) were significantly stimulated by oil addition, and reached their maximum after incubation for 3 and 7 days, respectively. Meanwhile, the abundances of alkB and phnAc genes increased and the bacterial communities continuously shifted. Potential oil-degrading bacteria Alcanivorax, Erythrobacter were the dominant degraders by day 3, whereas the dominant degraders shifted to C1-B045, Alteromonas, Pseudohongiella in the later period. These results provide valuable insights into the cooperative system of the versatile oil-degrading bacteria in successively biodegrading complex oil hydrocarbons in oil spills.

Anthropogenic disturbance of coastal ecosystems has increased the need for comprehensive methods and indicators to assess the health status of marine ecosystems. Biotic indices are important as they indicate different ecological states. In this study, Eco-Exergy-based indices (Exergy and Structural Exergy) and diversity indices (Shannon-Wiener index and Margalef index) were applied in the seas around the Zhoushan archipelago, and correlation analysis between biotic indices and environmental factors was used to test the robustness of these indices in capturing the environment changes, aimed to provide reference in selecting the indices for assessing marine eco-environment quality. Results showed that the benthic indices of Exergy, Shannon-Wiener, and Margalef increased with the distance from the mainland. The Eco-Exergy-based indices and Margalef index were significantly, negatively correlated with dissolved inorganic nitrogen and reactive phosphate, and significantly, positively correlated with the salinity of seawater. Overall, the marine ecosystem was more stable further away from the coast, where salinity was higher, and pollutants such as nutrients in seawater were lower. In addition, biodiversity and Eco-Exergy was also higher. Generally, Eco-Exergy-based indices were observed to be good indicators for detecting the environment changes in the study area.
