Quantum chemical calculations were used to study the mechanism of Diels-Alder reactions involving chiral anthracenes as dienes and a series of dienophiles. The reaction force analysis was employed to obtain a detailed scrutiny of the reaction mechanisms, it has been found that thermodynamics and kinetics of the reactions are quite consistent: the lower the activation energy, the lower the reaction energy, thus following the Bell-Evans-Polanyi principle. It has been found that activation energies are mostly due to structural rearrangements that in most cases represented more than 70% of the activation energy. Electronic activity mostly due to changes in σ and π bonding were revealed by the reaction electronic flux (REF), this property helps identify whether changes on σ or π bonding drive the reaction. Additionally, new global indexes describing the behavior of the electronic activity were introduced and then used to classify the reactions in terms of the spontaneity of their electronic activity. Local natural bond order electronic population analysis was used to check consistency with global REF through the characterization of specific changes in the electronic density that might be responsible for the activity already detected by the REF. Results show that reactions involving acetoxy lactones are driven by spontaneous electronic activity coming from bond forming/strengthening processes; in the case of maleic anhydrides and maleimides it appears that both spontaneous and non-spontaneous electronic activity are quite active in driving the reactions.

We investigated whether the diversity, endemicity and specificity of alder symbionts could be changed by isolation in a Mediterranean glacial refugium. We studied both ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi and nitrogen-fixing actinobacteria associated with alders, and compared their communities in Corsica and on the European continent. Nodules and root tips were sampled on the three alder species present in Corsica and continental France and Italy. Phylogenies based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and a multilocus sequence analysis approach were used to characterize fungal and Frankia species, respectively. Patterns of diversity, endemism and specialization were compared between hosts and regions for each symbiont community. In Corsica, communities were not generally richer than on the mainland. The species richness per site depended mainly on host identity: Alnus glutinosa and Alnus cordata hosted richer Frankia and EM communities, respectively. Half of the Frankia species were endemic to Corsica against only 4% of EM species. Corsica is not a hotspot of diversity for all alder symbionts but sustains an increased frequency of poor-dispersers such as hypogeous fungi. Generalist EM fungi and host-dependent profusely sporulating (Sp+) Frankia were abundantly associated with Corsican A. cordata, a pattern related to a more thermophilic and xerophylic climate and to the co-occurrence with other host trees.

Canadian oil sands tailings are predominately sodic residues contaminated by hydrocarbons such as naphthenic acids. These conditions are harsh for plant development. In this study, we evaluated the effect of inoculating roots of Alnus viridis ssp. crispa and Alnus incana ssp. rugosa with ectomycorrhizal fungi in the presence of tailings compounds. Seedlings were inoculated with 7 different strains of Paxillus involutus and Alpova diplophloeus and were grown under different treatments of NaCl, Na2SO4, and naphthenic acids in a growth chamber. Afterwards, seedling survival, height, dry biomass, leaf necrosis, and root mycorrhization rate were measured. Paxillus involutus Mai was the most successful strain in enhancing alder survival, health, and growth. Seedlings inoculated with this strain displayed a 25% increase in survival rate, 2-fold greater biomass, and 2-fold less leaf necrosis compared with controls. Contrary to our expectations, A. diplophloeus was not as effective as P. involutus in improving seedling fitness, likely because it did not form ectomycorrhizae on roots of either alder species. High intraspecific variation characterized strains of P. involutus in their ability to stimulate alder height and growth and to minimize leaf necrosis. We conclude that in vivo selection under bipartite symbiotic conditions is essential to select effective strains that will be of use for the revegetation and reclamation of derelict lands.

The clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis is challenging as patients present with an array of objective and subjective symptoms early or late in the disease course. Ultrasound is routinely performed in all patients with suspected acute appendicitis. Equivocal test results frequently require further assessments using other imaging techniques that are limited in scope during pregnancy because of issues involving safety, availability, and accessibility. Physical examination diagnostic signs in acute appendicitis during pregnancy have not been well studied. Studies failed to describe, standardize, or correlate the technique used to the pathologic disease process. Therefore, gaps remain in current knowledge regarding the usefulness and application of these tests during the physical examination. Improvement in diagnostic acumen is critically important, particularly in cases where there remains diagnostic uncertainty because of equivocal imaging results. This article reviews signs used to diagnose patients with acute appendicitis using a pathophysiologic approach based on visceral and cerebrospinal nerve pathways to explain the mechanism for a positive test result. It also suggests a framework to study them further to better understand their role, if any, in clinical practice.

There is increasing interest in the potential of trees to sequester carbon (C) in above- and below-ground stocks to mitigate against increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHG). This study determined whether pasture-tree (PT) systems influence soil C stocks compared with open pasture (OP) by sampling four sites with trees aged 14 to16 years. Poplars (Populus spp.) at Tikokino and Woodville and alders (Alnus spp.) at Poukawa and Ruakura were planted on contrasting soils (Haplustands, Endoaquepts, Durustalfs and Humaquepts, respectively). Trees at all four sites were arranged in partial-Nelder radial planting designs, with five stem densities ranging from 67 to 1276 stems ha-1. Soils were sampled at five stem density classes, along with adjacent OP areas in the same paddock, to a depth of 1 m (0-75, 75-150, 150-300, 300-600, 600-1000 mm). At three of the four sites, root mass density was greater (P < 0.05) in PT than in OP systems. At Woodville, estimates of total soil C mass to 1 m tended to be greater (P = 0.08) in the OP than in the PT system (200 vs. 163 Mg C ha-1, respectively), whereas no significant differences in total soil C masses between OP and PT were shown at the remaining sites (P > 0.10). Despite the limited statistical significance, estimates of total soil C mass at Tikokino and Woodville (sites with poplars) were 11 and 18% greater in OP than in PT systems, whereas estimates at Poukawa and Ruakura (sites with alders) were 2 and 6% greater in PT than in OP systems. Under the current conditions, our study suggests that tree species may be an additional factor influencing the C cycle and C accumulation in soils and need to be considered in the building of our soil C inventories.

Combustion wastes are characterised by extremely low N contents. Therefore, introduction of nitrogen-fixing species at the first stage of their biological reclamation is required. This paper presents an assessment of the growth parameters of alders (Alnus sp.) 10 years after their introduction to a disposal site of lignite combustion waste in Central Poland. Black (Alnus glutinosa) and grey alders (Alnus incana) were planted directly in the combustion waste. The soil amendment included three variants: control with pure combustion waste, admixture of lignite culm and addition of acid sand. Both alder species displayed good growth parameters comparable to those of alders in natural habitats. However, black alder had better growth parameters, such as stand density index (SDI), diameter at breast height (DBH) and height (H) than grey alder. The lignite amendment exerted a positive effect on tree growth, reflected in a higher SDI and H, whereas the acid sand amendment did not affect any of the growth parameters of the studied alder species. Despite the good growth parameters, the measured N:P and N:K ratios in the alder leaves largely differed from the optimal values indicating insufficient P and K supply at the combustion waste disposal site. This may pose a threat to further development of the introduced tree plantings. The introduction of alders along with the lignite addition into the planting holes seems to be a successful method of combustion waste revegetation.

The name Alnus viridis (Chaix) DC., based on Betula viridis Chaix (1785), has traditionally been attributed to green alders although it is based on a later basionym. Alnus alnobetula (Ehrh.) K. Koch based on Betula alnobetula Ehrh. (1783) is the correct name for green alders. In light of the increasing use and recognition of the name Alnus alnobetula (Ehrh.) K. Koch in the literature. I herein propose new nomenclatural combinations to account for the Japanese and Chinese subspecies respectively: Alnus alnobetula subsp. maximowiczii (Callier ex C.K. Schneid.) J. Chery and Alnus alnobetula subsp. mandschurica (Callier ex C.K. Schneid.) J. Chery. Recent phylogenetic analyses place these two taxa in the green alder species complex, suggesting that they should be treated as infraspecific taxa under the polymorphic Alnus alnobetula.
