RESUMO

The influence of polymer emulsion, pigment filler, and dispersant on the corrosion resistance of polymer cement-based composite anti-corrosion coatings were investigated in this study. Adhesion loss rate tests and electrochemical tests were conducted on samples. The research results show that optimal corrosion resistance can be achieved with a 45 wt% dosage of emulsion, a 6 wt% dosage of pigment filler, and a 0.30 wt% dosage of dispersant. The bonding properties of bare steel bars, epoxy-coated steel bars, and polymer cement-based composite anti-corrosion coated steel bars with grout were compared. The results show that the polymer cement-based composite anti-corrosion coating can enhance the bonding properties of the samples. Furthermore, the microscopic analysis was conducted on the samples. The results demonstrate that the appropriate addition of emulsion can fill internal pores of the coating, tightly bonding hydration products with unhydrated cement particles. Moreover, incorporating a suitable dosage of functional additives enhances the stability of the coating system and leads to a denser microstructure.

RESUMO

Deteriorating concrete structures are repaired to restore their load-carrying capacity and enhance their appearance. As part of the repair procedure, the corroded reinforcing steel bars are cleaned by sandblasting, and a protective coating is applied to protect them from further corrosion. Generally, a zin-rich epoxy coating is used for this purpose. However, there have been concerns about the performance of this type of coating in protecting the steel due to the formation of galvanic corrosion, thus necessitating the need for developing a durable steel coating. In this study, the performance of two types of steel coatings, namely a zinc-rich epoxy and cement-based epoxy resin coating, was investigated. The performance of the selected coatings was evaluated by conducting both laboratory and field experiments. In the field studies, the concrete specimens were exposed to a marine exposure site for more than five years. The salt spray and accelerated reinforcement corrosion studies indicated that the performance of the cement-based epoxy coating was better than the zinc-rich epoxy coating. However, there was no visible difference between the performance of the investigated coatings in the reinforced concrete slab specimens placed in the field. It is suggested to use cement-based epoxy coatings as steel primers based on the field and laboratory data developed in this study.

RESUMO

In the present work, Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) coatings were produced on zinc-aluminized carbon steels (Galvalume commercial treatment). In addition, copper particles of various sizes were introduced into the coating in order to produce samples with antifouling properties. The particles were successfully embedded into the coating. A higher number of embedded particles was observed when these are in sub-micrometric size and obtained in pulsed current. The presence of particles produces significant antifouling properties on the sample's surfaces during the first 20 days of immersion. The presence of the particles reduces the corrosion resistance in comparison to the samples PEO coated without the particles; however, the corrosion resistance remain higher than the one of the untreated sample.

RESUMO

Metal corrosion can potentially cause catastrophic engineering accidents threatening personal safety; thus, coating protection is a tremendously valuable anti-corrosion initiative. Recently, biphenylene, a novel two-dimensional (2D) graphene-based material, has achieved a remarkable synthetic breakthrough; the anti-corrosion properties of biphenylene, with its specific pore structure, are predicted to be beneficial in applications of metal corrosion resistance. In this study, the anti-corrosion mechanism of biphenylene is deciphered utilizing first principles and molecular dynamics. The results suggest that biphenylene with tetragonal, hexagonal, and octagonal carbon rings supplies adequate sites for stable O atom adsorption. The charge transfer amounts of +0.477 and +0.420 e facilitate the formation of a compact oxygen-rich layer on the material surface to acquire outstanding anti-corrosion properties. The moderate wettability of biphenylene prevents the water-based solution from encroaching on the biphenylene coating and substrate. In addition, the intensive binding between biphenylene and the aluminum substrate strengthens the integration of the two heterogeneous structures with -413.7 and 415.5 eV, which guarantees the durable application of biphenylene coating.

RESUMO

This paper proposes a testing methodology for barrier properties of large non-conductive anti-corrosion coatings on steel structures. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was adapted to in situ testing of steel structures by using a prototypical flexible measuring probe and a gel electrolyte that filled the probe, to take measurements on any surface regardless of its position. The first stage of the testing methodology was to perform time-consuming impedance measurements and quick electromagnetic measurements of coating thickness at selected test points. The results were used to determine correlation relationships between the logarithm of the impedance modulus for the coating at a measuring frequency of 0.1 Hz measured with the EIS method and the average thickness of the coating measured with an electromagnetic thickness gauge. Quick electromagnetic measurements were performed in the second stage to specify thickness of the other surface of the steel structure coating. The barrier properties of this coating were identified on the basis of the determined correlation.
