Mature inflorescences of sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) orient constantly on average to the geographical east. According to one of the explanations of this phenomenon, the eastward orientation of sunflower inflorescences increases the number of attracted insect pollinators. We tested this hypothesis in three field experiments performed in flowering sunflower plantations. In experiments 1 and 2 we measured the number of insects trapped by the vertical walls of sticky sunflower models facing north, east, south, and west. In experiment 3 we counted the pollinators' landings on real sunflower inflorescences facing naturally east or turned artificially toward north, south, and west. We found that the all-day number of pollinators (predominantly bees) attracted to model and real sunflowers in H. annuus plantations is independent of the azimuth direction of sunflower heads, and after 10 h in the morning, the average number of pollinators counted every 20 min is practically constant in the rest of the day.

Deciphering the initial steps of SARS-CoV-2 infection, that influence COVID-19 outcomes, is challenging because animal models do not always reproduce human biological processes and in vitro systems do not recapitulate the histoarchitecture and cellular composition of respiratory tissues. To address this, we developed an innovative ex vivo model of whole human lung infection with SARS-CoV-2, leveraging a lung transplantation technique. Through single-cell RNA-seq, we identified that alveolar and monocyte-derived macrophages (AMs and MoMacs) were initial targets of the virus. Exposure of isolated lung AMs, MoMacs, classical monocytes and non-classical monocytes (ncMos) to SARS-CoV-2 variants revealed that while all subsets responded, MoMacs produced higher levels of inflammatory cytokines than AMs, and ncMos contributed the least. A Wuhan lineage appeared to be more potent than a D614G virus, in a dose-dependent manner. Amidst the ambiguity in the literature regarding the initial SARS-CoV-2 cell target, our study reveals that AMs and MoMacs are dominant primary entry points for the virus, and suggests that their responses may conduct subsequent injury, depending on their abundance, the viral strain and dose. Interfering on virus interaction with lung macrophages should be considered in prophylactic strategies.

A snapshot multi-wavelength birefringence imaging measurement method was proposed in this study. The RGB-LEDs at wavelengths 463 nm, 533 nm, and 629 nm were illuminated with circularly polarized light after passing through a circular polarizer. The transmitted light through the birefringent sample was captured by a color polarization camera. A single imaging process captured light intensity in four polarization directions (0°, 45°, 90°, and 135°) for each of the three RGB spectral wavelength channels, and subsequently measured the first three elements of Stokes vectors (S0, S1, and S2) after the sample. The birefringence retardance and fast-axis azimuthal angle were determined simultaneously. An experimental setup was constructed, and polarization response matrices were calibrated for each spectral wavelength channel to ensure the accurate detection of Stokes vectors. A polymer true zero-order quarter-wave plate was employed to validate measurement accuracy and repeatability. Additionally, stress-induced birefringence in a PMMA arch-shaped workpiece was measured both before and after the application of force. Experimental results revealed that the repeatability of birefringence retardance and fast-axis azimuthal angle was better than 0.67 nm and 0.08°, respectively. This approach enables multispectral wavelength, high-speed, high-precision, and high-repeatability birefringence imaging measurements through a single imaging session.

Azimuth multi-channel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has always been an important technical means to achieve high-resolution wide-swath (HRWS) SAR imaging. However, in the space-borne azimuth multi-channel SAR system, random phase noise will be produced during the operation of each channel receiver. The phase noise of each channel is superimposed on the SAR echo signal of the corresponding channel, which will cause the phase imbalance between the channels and lead to the generation of false targets. In view of the above problems, this paper proposes a random phase noise compensation method for space-borne azimuth multi-channel SAR. This method performs feature decomposition by calculating the covariance matrix of the echo signal and converts the random phase noise estimation into the optimal solution of the cost function. Considering that the phase noise in the receiver has frequency-dependent and time-varying characteristics, this method calculates the phase noise estimation value corresponding to each range-frequency point in the range direction and obtains the phase noise estimation value by expectation in the azimuth direction. The proposed random phase noise compensation method can suppress false targets well and make the radar present a well-focused SAR image. Finally, the usefulness of the suggested method is verified by simulation experiments.

In the field of maneuvering target tracking, the combined observations of azimuth and Doppler may cause weak observation or non-observation in the application of traditional target-tracking algorithms. Additionally, traditional target tracking algorithms require pre-defined multiple mathematical models to accurately capture the complex motion states of targets, while model mismatch and unavoidable measurement noise lead to significant errors in target state prediction. To address those above challenges, in recent years, the target tracking algorithms based on neural networks, such as recurrent neural networks (RNNs), long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, and transformer architectures, have been widely used for their unique advantages to achieve accurate predictions. To better model the nonlinear relationship between the observation time series and the target state time series, as well as the contextual relationship among time series points, we present a deep learning algorithm called recursive downsample-convolve-interact neural network (RDCINN) based on convolutional neural network (CNN) that downsamples time series into subsequences and extracts multi-resolution features to enable the modeling of complex relationships between time series, which overcomes the shortcomings of traditional target tracking algorithms in using observation information inefficiently due to weak observation or non-observation. The experimental results show that our algorithm outperforms other existing algorithms in the scenario of strong maneuvering target tracking with the combined observations of azimuth and Doppler.

A typical magnetometer-based measurement-while-drilling (MWD) system determines the azimuth of the bottom hole assembly during the drilling process by employing triaxial accelerometers and magnetometers. The geomagnetic azimuth solution is susceptible to magnetic interference, especially strong magnetic interference and so a rotary norm constraint filtering (RNCF) method for azimuth estimation, designed to support a gyroscope-aided magnetometer-based MWD system, is proposed. First, a new magnetic dynamical system, one whose output is observed by the magnetometers triad, is designed based on the Coriolis equation of the desired geomagnetic vector. Second, given that the norm of the non-interfered geomagnetic vector can be approximated as a constant during a short-term drilling process, a norm constraint procedure is introduced to the Kalman filter. This is achieved by the normalization of the geomagnetic part of the state vector of the dynamical system and is undertaken in order to obtain a precise geomagnetic component. Simulation and actual drilling experiments show that the proposed RNCF method can effectively improve the azimuth measurement precision with 98.5% over the typical geomagnetic solution and 37.1% over the KF in a RMSE sense when being strong magnetic interference environment.

RESUMO

Azimuth resolution and swath width are two crucial parameters in spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. However, it is difficult for conventional spaceborne SAR to simultaneously achieve high-resolution wide-swath (HRWS) due to the minimum antenna area constraint. To mitigate this limitation, some representative HRWS SAR imaging techniques have been investigated, e.g., the azimuth multichannel technique, digital beamforming (DBF) technique, and pulse repetition interval (PRI) variation technique. This paper focus on a comprehensive review of the three techniques with respect to their latest developments. First, some key parameters of HRWS SAR are presented and analyzed to help the reader establish the general concept of SAR. Second, three techniques are introduced in detail, roughly following a simple-to-complex approach, i.e., start with the basic concept, then move to the core principles and classic technical details, and finally report the technical challenges and corresponding solutions. Third, some in-depth insights on the comparison among the three techniques are given. The purpose of this paper is to provide a review and brief perspective on the development of HRWS SAR.

With the continuous development of automotive intelligence, vehicle occupant detection technology has received increasing attention. Despite various types of research in this field, a simple, reliable, and highly private detection method is lacking. This paper proposes a method for vehicle occupant detection using millimeter-wave radar. Specifically, the paper outlines the system design for vehicle occupant detection using millimeter-wave radar. By collecting the raw signals of FMCW radar and applying Range-FFT and DoA estimation algorithms, a range-azimuth heatmap was generated, visually depicting the current status of people inside the vehicle. Furthermore, utilizing the collected range-azimuth heatmap of passengers, this paper integrates the Faster R-CNN deep learning networks with radar signal processing to identify passenger information. Finally, to test the performance of the detection method proposed in this article, an experimental verification was conducted in a car and the results were compared with those of traditional machine learning algorithms. The findings indicated that the method employed in this experiment achieves higher accuracy, reaching approximately 99%.

Azimuthal acoustic logging can survey the downhole formation more accurately, and the acoustic source is the crucial component of the downhole acoustic logging tool with azimuthal resolution characteristics. To realize downhole azimuthal detection, assembling multiple transmitting piezoelectric vibrators in the circumferential direction is necessary, and the performance of azimuthal-transmitting piezoelectric vibrators needs attention. However, effective heating test and matching methods are not yet developed for downhole multi-azimuth transmitting transducers. Therefore, this paper proposes an experimental method to comprehensively evaluate downhole azimuthal transmitters; furthermore, we analyze the azimuthal-transmitting piezoelectric vibrator parameters. This paper presents a heating test apparatus and studies the admittance and driving responses of the vibrator at different temperatures. The transmitting piezoelectric vibrators showing a good consistency in the heating test were selected, and an underwater acoustic experiment was performed. The main lobe angle of the radiation beam, horizontal directivity, and radiation energy of the azimuthal vibrators and azimuthal subarray are measured. The peak-to-peak amplitude radiated from the azimuthal vibrator and the static capacitance increase with an increase in temperature. The resonant frequency first increases and then decreases slightly with an increase in temperature. After cooling to room temperature, the parameters of the vibrator are consistent with those before heating. Hence, this experimental study can provide a foundation for the design and matching selection of azimuthal-transmitting piezoelectric vibrators.

One of the fundamental sensors utilized in the Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS) is the radar sensor. Automotive-related functions need highly precise detection and range of traffic and surroundings; otherwise, the whole ADAS performance suffers. The radar placement beneath a bumper or a cover, the age or exposure to accidents or vehicle vibration, vehicle integration, and mounting tolerances will impact the angular performance of the radar sensor. In this research, we present an unsupervised online method for elevation mounting angle error compensation and a method for bumper and environmental error compensation in the azimuth direction. The proposed methods need no specific calibration jig and may be used to replace traditional initial calibration methods; they also enable ongoing calibration throughout the sensor's lifespan. A first proposed standalone method for vertical alignment uses stationary radar targets reflected from the environment to calculate a vertical misalignment angle with a line-fitting algorithm. The vertical mounting error compensation approach delivers two types of correction values: a dynamic value that converges quickly in the case of minor accidents and a more stable correction value that converges slowly but offers a long-term compensation value over the sensor's lifespan. A second proposed solution uses the vehicle velocity and radar targets properties, like relative velocity and measured azimuth angle, to calculate an individual azimuth correction curve. Real-world data collected from drive testing with a 77 GHz series automobile radar was used to analyze the performance of the proposed methods, yielding encouraging results.

The block varying pulse repetition frequency (BV-PRF) scheme applied to spaceborne squint sliding-spotlight synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can resolve large-range cell migration (RCM) and reduce azimuth signal non-uniformity. However, in the BV-PRF scheme, different raw data blocks have different PRFs, and the raw data in each block are insufficiently sampled. To resolve the two problems, a novel azimuth full-aperture pre-processing method is proposed to handle the SAR raw data formed by the BV-PRF scheme. The key point of the approach is the resampling of block data with different PRFs and the continuous splicing of azimuth data. The method mainly consists of four parts: de-skewing, resampling, azimuth continuous combination, and Doppler history recovery. After de-skewing, the raw data with different PRFs can be resampled individually to obtain a uniform azimuth sampling interval, and an appropriate azimuth time shift is introduced to ensure the continuous combination of the azimuth signal. Consequently, the resulting raw data are sufficiently and uniformly sampled in azimuth, which could be well handled by classical SAR-focusing algorithms. Simulation results on point targets validate the proposed azimuth pre-processing approach. Furthermore, compared with methods to process SAR data with continuous PRF, the proposed method is more effective.

What basically determines how much energy is generated by a photovoltaic (PV) system is the amount of solar irradiation that is absorbed by its PV modules. One of the technical solutions to boost this quantity, and thusly also maximize the return on PV investments, is solar tracking, which makes the following of the sun on its daily and annual journey in the sky possible and also takes changes in cloud conditions into consideration. The solar-tracking solutions that PV systems are most frequently equipped with deploy active sensor technologies, while passive ones are less common in present-day practice. However, even the popular solutions of today have their limitations. Their active sensor-tracking algorithms leave room for improvement for at least three major reasons, as they do not prevent the unnecessary operation of the motors in cloudy weather, they do not make the modules assume an appropriate position after nightfall, and they do not make sure that the structure and the electronics of the PV systems are protected from rain and the strong winds in the event of storms. This paper introduces a new active sensor-tracking algorithm, which has not only been tested but it is also in the process of patenting (patent ID: p2100209). By their contribution, the authors endeavor to propose a solution that can solve all three of the issues mentioned above. The concept is based on two fundamental findings. According to the first one, periodic movement can not only considerably decrease motor movement but also increase system lifetime, while the second one simply suggests that moving the modules into an almost horizontal position facing the equator at low light levels is conducive to the prevention of damages caused by storms and fast reaction to the increase in the amount of light at daybreak. A positive feature of the new system for PV power plant operators is that it performs the tracking of the sun practically without any decrease in power compared to the focal point position, since it works with an average inaccuracy of 1.9°.

In this study, a method based on the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and azimuth-scale expansion is presented to retrieve the sea-surface wind direction from a single X-band marine radar image. The algorithm first distinguishes rain-free and rain-contaminated radar images based on the occlusion zero-pixel percentage and then discards the rain-contaminated images. The radar image whose occlusion areas have been removed is decomposed into different low-frequency sub-images by the 2D DWT, and the appropriate low-frequency sub-image is selected. Images collected with a standard marine HH-polarized X-band radar operating at grazing incidence display a single intensity peak in the upwind direction. To overcome the influence of the occlusion area, before determining the wind direction, the data near the ship bow are shifted to expand the azimuth scale of the data. Finally, a harmonic function is least-square-fitted to the range-averaged radar return of the low-frequency sub-image as a function of the antenna look azimuth to determine the wind direction. Different from the wind-direction retrieval algorithms previously presented, this method is more suitable for sailing ships, as it functions well even if the radar data are heavily blocked. The results show that compared with the single-curve fitting algorithm, the algorithm based on DWT and azimuth-scale expansion can improve the wind-direction results in sailing ships, showing a reduction of 7.84° in the root-mean-square error with respect to the reference.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) antenna tracking system is an electromechanical component designed to track and steer the signal beams from the ground control station (GCS) to the airborne platform for optimum signal alignment. In a tracking system, an antenna continuously tracks a moving target and records their position. A UAV tracking antenna system is susceptible to signal loss if omnidirectional antenna is deployed as the preferred design. Therefore, to achieve longer UAV distance communication, there is a need for directional high gain antenna. From design principle, directional antennas are known to focus their signal energy in a particular direction viewed from their radiation pattern which is concentrated in a particular azimuth direction. Unfortunately, a directional antenna is limited by angle, thus, it must always be directed to the target. The other limitation of a UAV mechanical beam steering system is that the system is expensive to maintain and with low reliability. To solve this problem, we are proposing the use of MIMO technology as a readily available technology for UAV beyond line of sight technology. Although UAV antenna tracking is domiciled in the mechanical beam steering arrangement, this study shows that this native technology could be usurped by MIMO beam forming.

In this paper, the multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) radar signal processing algorithm is efficiently employed as an anticollision methodology for the identification of multiple chipless radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags. Tag-identifying methods for conventional chipped RFID tags rely mostly on the processing capabilities of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). In cases where more than one chipless tag exists in the same area, traditional methods are not sufficient to successfully read and distinguish the IDs, while the direction of each chipless tag can be obtained by applying MIMO technology to the backscattering signal. In order to read the IDs of the tags, beamforming is used to change the main beam direction of the antenna array and to receive the tag backscattered signal. On this basis, the RCS of the tags can be retrieved, and associated IDs can be identified. In the simulation, two tags with different IDs were placed away from each other. The IDs of the tags were successfully identified using the presented algorithm. The simulation result shows that tags with a distance of 0.88 m in azimuth can be read by a MIMO reader with eight antennas from 3 m away.

Passive ground emitter geolocation techniques are essential to electronic warfare systems, as they provide threat warnings in hostile environments, while ensuring the electronic silence of the mission platform. Geolocation of enemy emitters indicates the position of and type of adversary troops, and allows for the use of guided munition against enemy targets. Three-dimensional geolocation solutions based on least squares and particle filter estimation, using only azimuth and elevation measurements, were considered. Three batch-processing and one instantaneous solution algorithms, i.e., using a single pulse or a single observation point, were developed and investigated. The performance of the proposed solutions was demonstrated by simulations. Results showed that the batch-processing solutions achieved acceptable accuracies with a sufficient number of observation points. The performance degraded with fewer observation points. The instantaneous geolocation solution improved performance with increasing observation points, i.e., working in the sequential mode, and therefore could approach the accuracy of the batch-processing solutions.

Lead (Pb) causes significant adverse effects on the developing brain, resulting in cognitive and learning disabilities in children. The process by which lead produces these negative changes is largely unknown. The fact that children with these syndromes also show deficits in central auditory processing, however, indicates a speculative but disturbing relationship between lead-exposure, impaired auditory processing, and behavioral dysfunction. Here we studied in rats the changes in cortical spatial tuning impacted by early lead-exposure and their potential restoration to normal by auditory training. We found animals that were exposed to lead early in life displayed significant behavioral impairments compared with naïve controls while conducting the sound-azimuth discrimination task. Lead-exposure also degraded the sound-azimuth selectivity of neurons in the primary auditory cortex. Subsequent sound-azimuth discrimination training, however, restored to nearly normal the lead-degraded cortical azimuth selectivity. This reversal of cortical spatial fidelity was paralleled by changes in cortical expression of certain excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitter receptor subunits. These results in a rodent model demonstrate the persisting neurotoxic effects of early lead-exposure on behavioral and cortical neuronal processing of spatial information of sound. They also indicate that attention-demanding auditory training may remediate lead-induced cortical neurological deficits even after these deficits have occurred.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a widely used remote sensing observation technique. However, SAR raw echo data may be lost during the process of data acquisition by radar platform. In this paper, the imaging problem of SAR echo signal with periodically missing data along the azimuth is analyzed and a novel imaging method is proposed. Firstly, the problem of artificial artifact targets caused by periodically missing data is explained in detail, and the corresponding mathematical model is established. Then, the recovery method based on the RELAX algorithm with periodic notches data is proposed. In addition, when the size of two-dimensional (2D) echo data are large, block restoration along the azimuth is proposed to reduce the amount of calculation. Finally, the advantages of the algorithm proposed in this paper is demonstrated by the points target simulated SAR echo data processing and the real raw SAR echo data processing. When the azimuth periodically missing data rate is 50%, the SAR echo data can be recovered and the well-focused image can be obtained. Comparing the image entropy value and structural similarity index (SSIM) of the focused image, it proves the superiority of the proposed algorithm in solving the imaging problem of SAR azimuth periodically missing data.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have achieved significant advancements in speech processing, and numerous types of DNN architectures have been proposed in the field of sound localization. When a DNN model is deployed for sound localization, a fixed input size is required. This is generally determined by the number of microphones, the fast Fourier transform size, and the frame size. if the numbers or configurations of the microphones change, the DNN model should be retrained because the size of the input features changes. in this paper, we propose a configuration-invariant sound localization technique using the azimuth-frequency representation and convolutional neural networks (CNNs). the proposed CNN model receives the azimuth-frequency representation instead of time-frequency features as the input features. the proposed model was evaluated in different environments from the microphone configuration in which it was originally trained. for evaluation, single sound source is simulated using the image method. Well-focused and accurately scaled high-resolution inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) images provide a sound basis for feature extraction and target recognition. This paper proposes a novel high-resolution ISAR imaging algorithm, namely modified joint range spatial-variant autofocus and azimuth scaling algorithm (MJAAS). After motion compensation, the shift of the equivalent rotational center (ERC) of the target destroys the linear relationship between the azimuth chirp rates (ACR) of echo signals and the range coordinates of scattering points, thereby leading to the failure of azimuth scaling. Accordingly, a new joint equivalent rotational center position and effective rotational velocity (JERCP-ERV) signal model is established, serving as the basis of MJAAS. By recourse to the Davidon-Fletcher-Powell (DFP) algorithm, MJAAS can jointly estimate the ERCP and ERV by solving a minimum entropy optimization problem, so as to simultaneously achieve accurate azimuth scaling and range spatial-variant autofocus, which further improves the image focusing performance. MJAAS is not restricted by the modes of motion errors (coherent or non-coherent) and the motion compensation methods, so it can be widely applied to real data with the advantages of strong practicality and high accuracy. Extensive experimental results based on both simulated and real data are provided to corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
