RESUMO

In this study, a composite was manufactured by mixing graphene quantum dots, silicon oxide, and carbon nanoparticles, and the characteristics of the anode materials for secondary batteries were examined. To improve the capacity of the graphene quantum dot (GQD) anode material, the added silicon oxide content was varied among 0, 5, 10, 15, and 30 wt%, and carbon nanoparticles were added as a structural stabilizer to alleviate silicon oxide volume expansion. The physical properties of the prepared GQD/SiOx/C composite were investigated through XRD, SEM, EDS, and powder resistance analysis. Additionally, the electrochemical properties of the manufactured composite were observed through an analysis of the charge-discharge cycle, rate, and impedance of a lithium secondary battery. In the GQD/SiOx/C composite, by adding carbon nanoparticles, an internal cavity was formed that can alleviate the volume expansion of silicon oxide, and the carbon nanoparticles and silicon oxide particles were uniformly distributed. The formed internal cavity had a silicon oxide content of 5 wt%. Low initial efficiency was observed, and above 30 wt%, low cycle stability was observed. The GQD/SiOx/C composite with 15 wt% of silicon oxide added showed an initial discharge capacity of 595 mAh/g, a capacity retention rate of 92%, and a rate characteristic of 81 at 2 C/0.1 C. Silicon oxide was added to improve the capacity of the anode material, and carbon nanoparticles were added as a structural stabilizer to buffer the volume change of the silicon oxide. To use GQD/SiOx/C composite as a highly efficient anode material, the optimal silicon oxide content and carbon nanoparticle mechanism as a structural stabilizer were discussed.

Though iron is one of the vital micronutrients in biological systems excess of which is associated with various illness. Consumption of contaminated water and crops because of its extensive industrial utility is one of the major sources for excess iron in living beings. Hence, we have designed a sensor based on carbon nanoparticles for the detection of Fe (III) and we have also attempted to estimate Fe (III) in spiked water samples. Carbon nanoparticles (CNP) with quantum yield of 40.2 % was synthesized by solid state synthesis from aromatic molecular precursors unlike conventional synthesis methodology. The particle size, stability and optical properties of CNP were investigated by microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. CNP manifested a naked color change from colorless to yellow in presence of Fe (III) and 72 % of CNP's emission was quenched at 487 nm on excitation at 377 nm by Fe (III). The detection time was less than a second and limit of detection was calculated as 0.248 µM. The mechanistic aspect of detection was investigated and applicability of CNP was examined in spiked water samples.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the effects of single-pore non-liposuction near-infrared (NIR) endoscopic surgery and traditional open surgery for axillary sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in patients with early breast cancer (EBC). METHODS: The clinical pathological data of 61 patients with EBC who underwent axillary SLNB using indocyanine green (ICG) combined with carbon nanoparticle suspension (CNS) were retrospectively collected. Thirty patients received SLNB through single-pore non-liposuction NIR endoscopic surgery (endoscopic group), and the remaining 31 received SLNB through open-incision surgery (open group). The success rate, operation time, volume of intraoperative bleeding, postoperative axillary drainage, axillary extubation time, and the occurrence of postoperative complications were compared between the groups along with the total number of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs), luminous SLNs, stained SLNs, and the pathological positivity rate of the SLNs. RESULTS: All patients underwent SLNB with a 100% success rate. SLNB operation times of the endoscopic group were longer than those of the open group (t = 3.963, P = 0.000), and the volume of axillary drainage was inferior (t = 3.035, P = 0.004). However, there were no differences in the intraoperative bleeding volumes, axillary extubation times, and postoperative complications (P > 0.05). In the Open group, the mean number of SLNs was 5.12 ± 2.16, and the pathological positivity rate was 13.53%; in the Endoscopic group, these numbers were 4.89 ± 1.73 and 12.39%. The mean number of SLNs detected (t = 0.458, P = 0.649) and the pathological positivity rates (χ2 = 0.058, P = 0.810) did not differ between the two groups. All 61 patients were followed for a median of 14.6 months. There were no local recurrences or distant metastases. CONCLUSIONS: Our single-center results reveal that single-hole non-liposuction NIR endoscopic axillary SLNB is not inferior to open SLNB and may be an appropriate option for patients with early breast cancer who desire breast preservation with fewer incisions. To meet high-throughput screening of the residues of sulfonamides (SAs) with high sensitivity toward sulfamethazine (SM2) in milk samples, a new highly sensitive lateral flow immunoassay (LFA) based on amorphous carbon nanoparticles (ACNs) was developed. First, a group-specific monoclonal antibody 10H7 (mAb 10H7) that could recognize 25 SAs with high sensitivity toward SM2 (IC50 value of 0.18 ng/mL) was prepared based on H1 as an immune hapten and H4 as a heterologous coating hapten. Then, mAb 10H7 was conjugated to ACNs as an immune probe for LFA development. Under the optimized conditions, the LFA could detect 25 SAs with the cut-off value toward SM2 of 2 ng/mL, which could meet the requirement for detection of SAs. In addition, the LFA developed was also used for screening SAs' residues in real milk samples, with results being consistent with HPLC-MS/MS. Thus, this LFA can be used as a high-throughput screening tool for detection of SAs.

BACKGROUND: The clinical application of robotic-assisted gastrectomy remains controversial, especially as clinical studies of this operation navigated by carbon nanoparticle suspension injection (CNSI) have not been conducted. This study aims to assess the perioperative safety and efficacy of CNSI-guided robotic-assisted gastrectomy in patients with gastric cancer by focusing on short-term outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients who underwent CNSI-guided laparoscopic or robotic-assisted gastrectomy with a pathological diagnosis of gastric cancer was conducted. Data on demographics, surgical management, clinical-pathological results and short-term outcomes were compared among the groups. RESULTS: A total of 126 eligible patients were separated into the robotic-assisted gastrectomy (RAG) group (n = 16) and the laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) group (n = 110) in total. The operation time of the RAG group is longer than the LG group (p = 0.0000). When it comes to perioperative and short-term complications, there exists no statistical difference between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The time required for CNSI-guided robotic-assisted gastrectomy is longer than that for CNSI-guided laparoscopic gastrectomy. CNSI-guided robotic-assisted gastrectomy is safe and effective.

BACKGROUND: Carbon nanoparticle suspension (CNS) was applied to locate the lymphatic leakage in chylous ascites (CA). However, the flow speed and distance of the CNS were particularly decreased in the following two cases (patient 5 and 6). This study aimed to investigate and improve the flow speed and distance of the CNS via a rat model. METHODS: Seven patients with CA were accepted for surgery in the past two years. Clinical data were recorded. Rats were divided into two groups to confirm the hypothesis regarding whether accepting milk or orally administered food before surgery was the key factor in CA surgery with CNS. The animals were divided into 2 groups: experimental group of 5 rats receiving fat emulsion injection (2 g/kg) 30 min before the operation and control group of 5 rats receiving saline. We analyzed flow speed and distance of the CNS in two groups of rats. The hypothesis established was that CNS movements pattern differ depending on the degree of capillary lymph duct filling. Finally, the late case reconfirmed the hypothesis again. RESULTS: In animal experiments, the CNS in the preoperative high-fat feeding group moved faster and over a longer distance than that in the control group (0.51 ± 0.09 cm vs. 0.19 ± 0.10 cm, respectively; p < 0.05). Based on this, the CNS was applied to the seventh patient, who had been given a diet with a slightly higher fat content 3 days before the operation, and marked improvement with a complete cure was recorded. CONCLUSIONS: The capillary lymph duct was beginning to swell after dietary intake. The dilation of the lymph vessel could make it easier for the CNS to move and reach the leakage.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although the significance of Delphian lymph nodes (DLNs) in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has been reported, all studies have been based on a small sample size and lack a direct statement concerning prognosis. METHODS: A total of 904 consecutive patients were enrolled in the current study, and all patients were divided into two groups (DLN-positive and DLN-negative) according to the presence of DLN metastasis. RESULTS: DLN was detected in 687 patients (76.0%), and 123 (17.9%) had DLN metastasis. Compared to those in the DLN-negative group, the proportion of other central lymph node (CLN) metastases, mean number of metastatic CLNs, and mean metastatic CLN ratio were higher in the DLN-positive group (86.2 vs. 50.2%, 6.70 ± 5.19 vs. 1.60 ± 2.37, and 0.54 ± 0.25 vs. 0.18 ± 0.26, respectively; p < .001). The same phenomena were observed in the metastatic lateral lymph nodes (LLNs) between the DLN-positive and DLN-negative groups (52.0 vs. 15.4%, 7.28 ± 6.08 vs. 3.38 ± 3.73, and 0.23 ± 0.15 vs. 0.13 ± 0.12, respectively; p < .001). Patients in the DLN-positive group had shorter LLN metastasis-free survival and distant metastasis-free survival than patients in the DLN-negative group (93.5% vs. 98.6% and 95.9% vs. 98.8%, respectively, p < .05). CONCLUSIONS: DLN metastasis in PTC is associated with tumor aggressiveness and a poor prognosis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical diagnostic validity of carbon nanoparticle suspension (CNS) in sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for assessing lymphatic spread of early-stage cervical cancer. DESIGN: A prospective study. SETTING AND POPULATION: 356 cases. METHODS: We enrolled 356 stage Ia2-IIa2 cervical cancer patients to undergo SLNB using CNS, followed by systematic pelvic lymphadenectomy. All lymph node specimens were assessed using conventional histopathologic ± pathologic ultrastaging analyses. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Sentinel lymph node detection rate (DR), clinical diagnostic validity and various related factors were analysed. RESULTS: CNS identified 1456 SLNs in 325 patients. The overall SLN DR was 91.29%. A significantly higher DR was found for patients with tumours <20 mm (97.75% versus 71.91%; P < 0.001). Two patients had false-negative results. SLNB with CNS had sensitivity of 96.65%, false-negative rate (FNR) of 4.35% and negative predictive value (NPV) of 99.29%. Importantly, sensitivity (100%), NPV (100%) and FNR (0%) were improved when testing the subgroup of patients with tumours <20 mm (267 cases). There were no observed differences in DR based on pathological type or grade, stage, depth of stromal invasion, surgical approach, menopausal status or prior treatment with chemotherapy (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Sentinel lymph node biopsy with CNS results in favourable DR, sensitivity and NPV for women with early-stage cervical cancer with small tumour sizes. SLNB with CNS is safe, feasible and relatively effective for guiding precise surgical treatment of early-stage cervical cancer. This research aimed to enhance the antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized from silver nitrate (AgNO3) using aloe vera extract. It was performed by means of incorporating AgNPs on an activated carbon nanoparticle (ACNPs) under ultrasonic agitation (40 kHz, 2 × 50 watt) for 30 min in an aqueous colloidal medium. The successful AgNPs synthesis was clarified with both Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometers. The successful AgNPs-ACNPs incorporation and its particle size analysis was performed using Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). The brown color suspension generation and UV-Vis's spectra maximum wavelength at around 480 nm confirmed the existence of AgNPs. The particle sizes of the produced AgNPs were about 5 to 10 nm in the majority number, which collectively surrounded the aloe vera extract secondary metabolites formed core-shell like nanostructure of 8.20 ± 2.05 nm in average size, while ACNPs themselves were about 20.10 ± 1.52 nm in average size formed particles cluster, and 48.00 ± 8.37 nm in average size as stacking of other particles. The antibacterial activity of the synthesized AgNPs and AgNPs-immobilized ACNPs was 57.58% and 63.64%, respectively (for E. coli); 61.25%, and 93.49%, respectively (for S. aureus). In addition, when the AgNPs-immobilized ACNPs material was coated on the cotton and polyester fabrics, the antibacterial activity of the materials changed, becoming 19.23% (cotton; E. coli), 31.73% (polyester; E. coli), 13.36% (cotton; S. aureus), 21.15% (polyester; S. aureus).

Health risks induced by PM2.5 have become one of the major concerns among living populations, especially in regions facing serious pollution such as China and India. Furthermore, the composition of PM2.5 is complex and it also varies with time and locations. To facilitate our understanding of PM2.5-induced toxicity, a predictive modeling framework was developed in the present study. The core of this study was 1) to construct a virtual carbon nanoparticle library based on the experimental data to simulate the PM2.5 structures; 2) to quantify the nanoparticle structures by novel nanodescriptors; and 3) to perform computational modeling for critical toxicity endpoints. The virtual carbon nanoparticle library was developed to represent the nanostructures of 20 carbon nanoparticles, which were synthesized to simulate PM2.5 structures and tested for potential health risks. Based on the calculated nanodescriptors from virtual carbon nanoparticles, quantitative nanostructure-activity relationship (QNAR) models were developed to predict cytotoxicity and four different inflammatory responses induced by model PM2.5. The high predictability (R2 > 0.65 for leave-one-out validations) of the resulted consensus models indicated that this approach could be a universal tool to predict and analyze the potential toxicity of model PM2.5, ultimately understanding and evaluating the ambient PM2.5-induced toxicity.

In this study, we investigate the performance of two piezoresistive micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS)-based silicon cantilever sensors for measuring target analytes (i.e., ultrafine particulate matters). We use two different types of cantilevers with geometric dimensions of 1000 × 170 × 19.5 µm3 and 300 × 100 × 4 µm3, which refer to the 1st and 2nd types of cantilevers, respectively. For the first case, the cantilever is configured to detect the fundamental in-plane bending mode and is actuated using a resistive heater. Similarly, the second type of cantilever sensor is actuated using a meandering resistive heater (bimorph) and is designed for out-of-plane operation. We have successfully employed these two cantilevers to measure and monitor the changes of mass concentration of carbon nanoparticles in air, provided by atomizing suspensions of these nanoparticles into a sealed chamber, ranging from 0 to several tens of µg/m3 and oversize distributions from ~10 nm to ~350 nm. Here, we deploy both types of cantilever sensors and operate them simultaneously with a standard laboratory system (Fast Mobility Particle Sizer, FMPS, TSI 3091) as a reference.

Boronic acid-doped carbon nanoparticles were prepared and are shown to undergo aggregation induced emission (AIE). The nanoparticle composite is a viable fluorescent probe for glucose determination by using the RGB technique and a smartphone. The structure and the chemical composition of the doped carbon nanoparticles were confirmed by SEM, TEM, FTIR and UV-vis spectroscopy. The combination of 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid with o-phenylenediamine and rhodamine B endowed the hybrid with high fluorescence intensity (quantum yield 46%). Compared with conventional two-step preparation of boronic acid-based fluorescent probes for glucose, the present one step synthesis strategy is simpler and more effective. The addition of glucose causes the formation of covalent bonds between the cis-diols group of glucose molecules and boronic acid moiety. Fluorescent intensity can be quantified using dual wavelengths simultaneously, where both increases, as the target analytes bind to the bronic acid. These variations was monitored by the smartphone camera, and the green channel intensities of the colored images were processed by using the RGB option of a smartphone. The assay works in the 32 µM to 2 mM glucose concentration range and has an 8 µM detection limit. The method was successfully used for the assay of glucose in diluted human serum. Graphical abstractThe fluorometric method was developed for determination of glucose using boron doped carbon nanoparticles (BCNBs). The BCNPs aggregate after covalent binding between the cis-diols of glucose and boronic acid. The green channel of the images is recorded by a smartphone camera.

PURPOSE: Production of highly penetrable and targetable drug delivery particles is mainly focused by current therapy and such focus is achieved in our present study. The carbon nanoparticle (CNP) prepared from purely natural source was modified from spherical shape to cylindrical floral like structure after treatment with the anticancer drug methotrexate (CM). METHODS: The physiochemical properties of the CNP and CM was characterized using FT-IR/Raman Spectrometer, XRD, SEM, AFM, particle size analyzer and its biological evaluation using haemolysis and MTT assay. RESULTS: The shift in FT-IR peaks at 1592, 1120 cm-1 and peaks of raman spectra observed at 1303, 1300 cm-1 represents ordered carbon nanotubes. The morphological change from spherical to cylindrical floral like structure was observed using SEM and AFM and its particle size distribution analysis shows an average diameter of 269 nm for CM. XRD peak at 2θ = 23.86° (002) indicates the presence of large amount of amorphous material that corresponds to multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Haemocompatibility studies proved the safety level usage as 100 µg/ml and MTT assay shows viability rate of 85-98% with mouse embryonic fibroblast (NIH/3 T3) and 30-45% with pancreatic carcinoma (MIA PaCa-2) and gastric cancer cell lines (SNU- 484) respectively.These results are also supported by phase contrast microscope images observed after staining with calcein AM and EthD-1. CONCLUSIONS: The morphologically modified CNPs has shown good anticancer, biocompatibility and haemocompatibility property which is an important criterion to be satisfied by a biomedical product.

BACKGROUND: To stage axillary lymph nodes in women with early-stage breast cancer, sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB), rather than axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), has been employed. Moreover, different tracer methods have various advantages and disadvantages. In recent years, carbon nanoparticle suspensions (CNSs) have been used as lymph node tracers during surgeries for thyroid cancer, gastric cancer, and colorectal cancer. The study retrospectively analyzed the feasibility and accuracy of CNS for sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping in patients with early breast cancer. METHODS: This single-center, retrospective study included breast cancer patients who underwent SLNB from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2017, in the Department of Breast Cancer, Guangdong General Hospital. All patients received standard SLNB surgery using a CNS tracer. RESULTS: A total of 332 cases were included in this study. The SLN identification rate was 99.1% (329/332), and the mean number of SLNs was 2.6 (range, 1-6). SLN metastasis was found in 62 (18.8%) cases, of which 90.3% were found to be macrometastases. The sensitivity of SLNB was 95.9% (47/49), with a specificity of 100% (42/42), a positive predictive value of 100% (47/47), a negative predictive value of 95.5% (42/44), and a false-negative rate of 4.1% (2/49). CONCLUSION: The identification and predictive values of a CNS tracer for SLNB were satisfactory.

Near infrared (NIR) emitting semiconductor quantum dots can be excellent fluorescent nanoprobes, but the poor biodegradability and potential toxicity limits their application. The authors describe a fluorescent system composed of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as NIR emitters, and novel MnO2 nanoflowers as the fluorescence quenchers. The system is shown to be an activatable and biodegradable fluorescent nanoprobe for the "turn-on" detection of intracellular glutathione (GSH). The MnO2-GQDs nanoprobe is obtained by adsorbing GQDs onto the surface of MnO2 nanoflowers through electrostatic interaction. This results in the quenching of the NIR fluorescence of the GQDs. In the presence of GSH, the MnO2-GQDs nanoprobe is degraded and releases Mn2+ and free GQDs, respectively. This gives rise to increased fluorescence. The nanoprobe displays high sensitivity to GSH and with a 2.8 µM detection limit. It integrates the advantages of NIR fluorescence and biodegradability, selectivity, biocompatibility and membrane permeability. All this makes it a promising fluorescent nanoprobe for GSH and for cellular imaging of GSH as shown here for the case of MCF-7 cancer cells. AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of carbon nanoparticles (CNs) in identifying lymph nodes and preserving parathyroids in endoscopic total thyroidectomy (ETT) with central neck dissection (CND), and to further explore the role of CNs in recovering postoperative parathyroid function. METHOD: Fifty-five patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma were randomized to either CN group (n = 28) or control group (n = 27). The primary outcome measures were pathological results (e.g., amount of incidental removed parathyroids and lymph nodes dissected) and follow-up results [e.g., recovery of serum calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels]. The secondary end-points were the rates of neuromuscular symptoms, in-hospital postoperative hormonal assay, and lymph node metastases. RESULTS: A total of 193 lymph nodes in the CN group and 123 lymph nodes in the control group were detected. The mean number of detected lymph nodes was significantly higher in the CN group than in the control group (P = 0.009). Parathyroids were present in the thyroid or central nodal specimens of five patients, which were all in the control group. The control group had a relatively higher incidence of incidental parathyroidectomy compared to the CN group (P = 0.023). Compared to the CN group, the incidence of paresthesia was higher in the control group even if not statistically significant. During follow-up, the serum calcium levels were higher in the CN group than in the control group; however, there was no statistically significant difference. For the serum PTH levels, the CN group recovered rapidly to the preoperative levels, whereas the control group climbed steadily to the normal range. The serum PTH levels in the CN group were apparently higher than in the control group at 1 week and 1 month postoperatively. CONCLUSION: CNs play an important role in protecting parathyroid glands, dissecting lymph nodes thoroughly, and promoting rapid recovery of parathyroid in ETT with CND (ChiCTR-TRC-14005042).

Early fetal sex determination is of crucial importance in the management of prenatal diagnosis of X-linked genetic abnormalities and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The development of an efficient and simple method for high-sensitivity, affordable, and rapid screening of cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) is crucial for fetal sex determination in early pregnancy. In this study, single- and dual-fluorophore DNA biosensors based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were fabricated for the individual and simultaneous detection of the SRY gene and DYS14 marker in cffDNA obtained from maternal plasma samples. This nanosensing platform is based on the immobilization of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) probes, labeled with ROX or FAM fluorophores, on MWCNT, resulting in the quenching of fluorescence emission in the absence of the targets. Upon the addition of the complementary target DNA (ctDNA) to the hybridization reaction, the fluorescence emission of fluorophore-labeled probes was significantly recovered to 79.5 % for ROX-labeled probes (i.e. SRY-specific probes), 81.5 % for FAM-labeled probes (i.e. DYS14-specific probes), and 65.9 % for dual-fluorophore biosensor compared to the quenching mode. The limit of detection (LOD) for ROX, and FAM was determined to be 4.5 nM, and 7.6 nM, respectively. For dual-color probes, LOD was found to be 5.4 (ROX) and 9.2 nM (FAM). Finally, the clinical applicability of the proposed method was confirmed through the detection of both biomarkers in maternal plasma samples, suggesting that the proposed nanosensing platform may be useful for the early detection of fetal sex using cffDNA.

Tracing individual cell pathways among the whole population is crucial for understanding their behavior, cell communication, migration dynamics, and fate. Optical labeling is one approach for tracing individual cells, but it typically requires genetic modification to induce the generation of photoconvertible proteins. Nevertheless, this approach has limitations and is not applicable to certain cell types. For instance, genetic modification often leads to the death of macrophages. This study aims to develop an alternative method for labeling macrophages by utilizing photoconvertible micron-sized capsules capable of easy internalization and prolonged retention within cells. Thermal treatment in a polyvinyl alcohol gel medium is employed for the scalable synthesis of capsules with a wide range of fluorescent dyes, including rhodamine 6G, pyronin B, fluorescein, acridine yellow, acridine orange, thiazine red, and previously reported rhodamine B. The fluorescence brightness, photostability, and photoconversion ability of the capsules are evaluated using confocal laser scanning microscopy. Viability, uptake, mobility, and photoconversion studies are conducted on RAW 264.7 and bone marrow-derived macrophages, serving as model cell lines. The production yield of the capsules is increased due to the use of polyvinyl alcohol gel, eliminating the need for conventional filtration steps. Capsules entrapping rhodamine B and rhodamine 6G meet all requirements for intracellular use in individual cell tracking. Mass spectrometry analysis reveals a sequence of deethylation steps that result in blue shifts in the dye spectra upon irradiation. Cellular studies on macrophages demonstrate robust uptake of the capsules. The capsules exhibit minimal cytotoxicity and have a negligible impact on cell motility. The successful photoconversion of RhB-containing capsules within cells highlights their potential as alternatives to photoconvertible proteins for individual cell labeling, with promising applications in personalized medicine.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the superiority of preoperative ultrasound-guided titanium clip and nanocarbon dual localization over traditional methods for determining the surgical approach and guiding resection of Siewert type II adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction (AEG). METHOD: This study included 66 patients with Siewert type II AEG who were treated at the PLA Joint Logistics Support Force 900th Hospital between September 1, 2021, and September 1, 2023. They were randomly divided into an experimental group (n = 33), in which resection was guided by the dual localization technique, and the routine group (n = 33), in which the localization technique was not used. Surgical approach predictions, proximal esophageal resection lengths, pathological features, and the occurrence of complications were compared between the groups. RESULT: The use of the dual localization technique resulted in higher accuracy in predicting the surgical approach (96.8% vs. 75.9%, P = 0.02) and shorter proximal esophageal resection lengths (2.39 ± 0.28 cm vs. 2.86 ± 0.39 cm, P < 0.001) in the experimental group as compared to the routine group, while there was no significant difference in the incidence of postoperative complications (22.59% vs. 24.14%, P = 0.88). CONCLUSION: Preoperative dual localization with titanium clips and carbon nanoparticles is significantly superior to traditional methods and can reliably delineate the actual infiltration boundaries of Siewert type II AEG, guide the surgical approach, and avoid excessive esophageal resection.

BACKGROUND: Indocyanine green (ICG) and carbon nanoparticle (CN) have been widely used for radical gastrectomy. However, synchronous application of ICG and CN in gastrectomy has not been tried yet. For the first time, we herein reported a novel strategy using dual tracers in laparoscopic radical gastrectomy. METHODS: This is a single-center, single-armed, prospective study. For each qualified patient, submucosal CN was injected the day before surgery, and subserosal ICG was injected immediately before surgery. Standard D2 laparoscopic gastrectomy and lymph node examination were subsequently performed. Demographics, lymph nodes (LNs) and postoperative outcome were collected for analysis. To analyze the safety and efficacy of this novel strategy, two contemporary historic control groups using single tracer were established. RESULTS: A total of 60 patients underwent dual tracer laparoscopic gastrectomy and were divided into distal (n = 41) and total (n = 19) groups. An average of 53.3 and 62.2 LNs was harvested from two groups, respectively. The average operation duration was 213.3 and 250.0 min, and intra-operative blood loss was 100.2 ml and 94.7 ml. None received combined organ resection. Margin negativity and R0 resection were achieved in all patients. Three (7.3%) complications occurred in distal group. None required second operation or deceased. Postoperative hospitalization was 9.7 and 9.6 days, respectively. Compared to single tracer, more LNs (p < 0.01), shorter operation time (p < 0.01), less blood lost (p < 0.01) and accelerated postoperative recovery (p < 0.01) were observed in dual tracer group. CONCLUSIONS: We propose a novel, feasible and safe tracing strategy for laparoscopic gastrectomy. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2100051309).
