RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Autoimmune diseases are of considerable importance in dog breeding. An increased risk of diseases with genetic predisposition is present especially in breeds with a limited genetic diversity. Strict breeding regulations and a high degree of self responsibility of the breeders are essential to prevent these diseases. There are only a few DNA tests available for detecting carriers of genes predisposing for autoimmune diseases. In this review, we describe the special situation in the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, who has a special predisposition for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and for Immune-mediated Rheumatoid Disease (IMRD), as well as for Steroid-Responsive Meningitis Arteritis (SRMA) and Juvenile Addison's Disease (JADD). In addition a short overview on the pathogenesis of autoimmune disease is presented.

Zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL) is a public health problem endemic in some countries. Current control measures, in particular culling infected dogs, have not reduced ZVL incidence in humans. We evaluated the use of five systemic insecticides (spinosad, fluralaner, afoxolaner, sarolaner and moxidectin) currently used in dogs for other purposes (e.g. tick, flea control) in controlling ZVL transmission. The anti-phlebotomine capacity of these compounds confirmed in experimental studies makes their use in ZVL control programmes very promising. Limitations and benefits of using this new control tool are compared to current practices.

RESUMO

The comparative pharmacokinetic behavior of albendazole (ABZ) and its new benzimidazol prodrug [1-tert-butyloxycarbonyl-5-propylthio-1-H-benzimidazol-2ylcarbamate of methyl] (ABZBoc), following their oral administration (10mg/kg) to healthy dogs was explored. Blood samples were obtained serially over a 24h period after treatment, then the plasma was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to search the albendazole metabolites (ABZSO and ABZSO2). However, the albendazole parent drug was not detectable at any time after both treatments (ABZ and ABZBoc). By albendazole metabolites (ABZSO and ABZSO2) were the analytes recovered in the plasma after oral administration of ABZ and ABZBoc. Furthermore, some amounts of ABZBoc were also available in the plasma samples treated with this new produg. The plasma profile of each analyte followed a similar pattern after both treatments, the active metabolite (ABZSO) was the major analyte recovered in plasma (between 1 and 24h post-treatment). The pharmacokinetic parameters of both groups were calculated (Cmax, Tmax, t1/2, AUC0->∞), and analyzed using the Student's t-test, P<0.05. Thus, the pharmacokinetic analysis indicated four statistically significant changes in the pharmacokinetic parameters defined above of the albendazole metabolites (ABZSO, ABZSO2) between the group treated with albendazole (group A) and that treated with ABZBoc prodrug (group B). Hence, the levels of the various pharmacokinetics parameters were low in the group treated with prodrug, as well they did not reach equivalent concentrations to that of albendazole. These differences between albendazole and its new prodrug may be explained by the fact that ABZBoc prodrug was not effectively reduced in the intestine of dogs.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the quality and accuracy of serological diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis in the Americas. METHODS: A systematic review found original studies in the databases MEDLINE, EMBASE and LILACS up to November 2012 and in complementary sources up to February 2013. Studies were evaluated in accordance with QUADAS 2 and STARD parameters and recommended in accordance with GRADE parameters. Meta-analysis was carried out with Meta-DiSc software, using the random-effect model. RESULTS: Two hundred and eighty-four studies were identified, of which 25 met the inclusion criteria, comprising the final synthesis. All but one was conducted in Brazil, and only two were judged to be of good quality. 15 studies involving immuno-enzymatic tests with crude antigens (cELISA), 11 studies on indirect immunofluorescence tests (IFAT) and three on the immunochromatographic dual-path platform (DPP) test were meta-analysed. The combined results for sensitivity and specificity were cELISA: 0.89 (CI 95% 0.87-0.91) and 0.87 (CI 95% 0.86-0.88); IFAT: 0.88 (CI 95% 0.85-0.91) and 0.63 (CI 95% 0.61-0.65); and DPP: 0.83 (CI 95% 0.78-0.88) and 0.73 (CI 95% 0.70-0.75). CONCLUSION: Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with crude antigens and DPP tests have moderate accuracy for the diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis, and the quality of the design, implementation and analysis of validation studies on diagnostic tests for this disease urgently require improvement. The recommendation for use of the evaluated tests is based on evidence that is scarce and restricted to Brazil.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Feeding raw meat is becoming increasingly common among dog owners. This feeding practice can pose a hygienic risk and can lead to health risks for dogs and their owners. Hygienically sound food rations, that are balanced in terms of all nutrients and energy, must be feed to breeding dogs. The aim of this study was to record the influence of raw feeding on the occurrence of mastitis, metritis and the survival of puppies. An online questionnaire was sent to kennel club registered dog breeders in Germany and Switzerland. A total of 531 litters were recorded and evaluated. Mastitis and/or metritis were present in 9,2 % and 2,8 % (n = 49 and n = 15, respectively) of the breeding bitches. 29 % (n = 154) of the breeders reported loss of puppies in the litter. The most common cause were stillbirths (n = 105 litters with 187 stillborn puppies), and/or early mortality (n = 50 litters with 73 puppies that died in the first 48 hours). The occurrence of puppy losses in the litter and/or a higher proportion of puppy losses in the litter was favored by increased body weight of the bitch in larger dog breeds, existing previous illnesses, previously reported gestation or postpartum problems, increasing length of the parturition phase and/or a cesarean section. A higher total number of surviving puppies was associated with increased weight and anamnestic reported health of the bitch and the use of milk powder instead of other milk substitutes. A relationship between raw feeding and the occurrence of mastitis, metritis, the total number of surviving puppies and/or the occurrence or proportion of pup losses in the litter and was not found in this study. However very few breeders in this cohort fed their bitches raw, which in turn was due to the random selection of breeders. Many years of breeding experience and the increasing parity of the bitch had a clearly positive influence on the health of the bitch.

INTRODUCTION: Viral infections are a frequent cause of disseminated non-suppurative encephalitis in dogs. However, using routine diagnostic methods, the specific virus may remain unknown due to extensive or complete viral clearance or because the virus is unexpected or new. A metatranscriptomics-based approach of combining high-throughput sequencing (HTS) and bioinformatics analysis was used to investigate the viral etiology in archival cases of dogs with non-suppurative encephalitis. In formalin-fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) brain material from the years 1976 to 2021 a high incidence of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) was detected. Moreover, canine distemper virus (CDV) was identified without typical demyelinating lesions and canine vesivirus (CaVV) was detected as an unexpected virus associated with non-suppurative encephalitis. We demonstrated the viral presence in brain tissues at the sites of inflammation by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridization (ISH). These results highlight the value of emerging sequencing technologies in veterinary diagnostics and expand our knowledge on the etiologies of encephalitis in dogs.

INTRODUCTION: Based on a donation of more than 1000 Swiss dog license tags to the museum of veterinary medical history in Zurich, historic dog license taxes and tags are compared between Switzerland and other European countries. In 2006 the microchip was launched as mandatory identification for dogs in Switzerland and dog license tags became redundant.

INTRODUCTION: Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are of increasing importance in human and veterinary medicine. Also, small animal clinics and practices are facing patients carrying antibiotic-resistant bacteria. What risk do these animals pose for animal owners? How can the risk of transmission to humans be reduced? A working group of human and veterinary medicine experts developed a guide for dog or cat owners with pets carrying antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The guide contains background information on the most important antibiotic-resistant bacteria in dogs and cats, namely methicillin-resistant staphylococci and extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)- and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae. Measures are listed to reduce the risk of transmission to humans. This review explains the pathophysiology, occurrence and risk factors of these bacteria in dogs, cats and humans. Recommended measures are outlined.

INTRODUCTION: We describe patient-specific surgical guide prototyping and surgical treatment of a complex antebrachial deformity in two skeletally mature dogs presented with chronic lameness. Computer-assisted surgery was elected to increase accuracy in the correction of the complex deformity. Radiographs and computed tomography (CT) scans revealed a biplane deformity with valgus, procurvatum and external torsion of the right radius in both cases. The pre-surgical planning started from the quantification of the angular deformity, followed by computer simulated correction and to end up with a rehearsal surgery on 3D printed bone models. During the surgery, the custom-made osteotomy guides closely fitted the bone, allowing for a precise corrective osteotomy, that was stabilized with two locking plates. Postoperative radiographs showed the successful correction of the deformity. Eight and 12 weeks postoperative follow up examinations showed improved lameness, weight-bearing and progression of bone healing in both dogs. Patient-specific surgical guides allowed for a satisfactory correction of the antebrachial deformity. Additional benefits of using customized surgical devices include standardization and reduced surgical time.

OBJECTIVES: To determine reference values of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) concentrations in the aqueous humor of control dogs. To show whether these values are significantly different from those obtained in dogs affected with intraocular pathology: acute anterior uveitis (AAU) or chronic primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG). METHODS: Forty-four dogs were included in the study and were divided into two groups: a control group and a group with intraocular disease. Twenty-seven dogs (9 males and 18 females) were examined and found to be normal after a complete ophthalmological examination (control group), 7 (6 females and 1 male) presented with PACG, and 10 (7 females and 3 males) presented with AAU secondary to corneal perforation. One aqueous humor sample (volume ≥ 0.2 mL) was collected from one eye of all dogs. The aqueous TNF-α concentration was determined with an Elisa kit. RESULTS: TNF-α levels were detectable in all dogs. TNF-α levels were significantly higher in the group with intraocular disease compared to the normal control group (P=0.001). In the group with intraocular disease, TNF-α levels were significantly higher in the aqueous humor of the AAU group compared with the PACG group (P=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In the dog, it is possible to measure the concentration of TNF-α in the aqueous humor. The level of TNF-α was significantly higher in the case of AAU. TNF-α is an interesting biomarker for longitudinal follow-up studies of comparative ophthalmology.

Abstract This article discusses the beginning of the relationship between dogs and humans and the cultural differences that affect the relationships between the two species. The study of interactions between humans and dogs needs to bring to light its plurality of interconnected phenomena: the domestication process that began thousands of years ago, the evolutionary effects of their relationship and the cultural aspects that influence such coexistence. Given this holistic view, we perceive this interaction scenario broadly, establishing parallels often ignored by one-off studies and/or biased by experimental paradigms of low ecological relevance to animals.
