RESUMO

The brilliant appearance of Easter Egg weevils, genus Pachyrhynchus (Coleoptera, Curculionidae), originates from complex dielectric nanostructures within their elytral scales and elytra. Previous work, investigating singular members of the Pachyrhynchus showed the presence of either quasi-ordered or ordered 3D photonic crystals based on the single diamond ( Fd3¯m ) symmetry in their scales. However, little is known about the diversity of the structural coloration mechanisms within the family. Here, the optical properties within Pachyrhynchus are investigated by systematically identifying their spectral and structural characteristics. Four principal traits that vary their appearance are identified and the evolutionary history of these traits to identify ecological trends are reconstructed. The results indicate that the coloration mechanisms across the Easter Egg weevils are diverse and highly plastic across closely related species with features appearing at multiple independent times across their phylogeny. This work lays a foundation for a better understanding of the various forms of quasi-ordered and ordered diamond photonic crystal within arthropods.

The morphology of maize ears plays a critical role in the breeding of new varieties and increasing yield. However, the study of traditional ear-related traits alone can no longer meet the requirements of breeding. In this study, 20 ear-related traits, including size, shape, number, and color, were obtained in 407 maize inbred lines at two sites using a high-throughput phenotypic measurement method and system. Significant correlations were found among these traits, particularly the novel trait ear shape (ES), which was correlated with traditional traits: kernel number per row and kernel number per ear. Pairwise comparison tests revealed that the inbred lines of tropical-subtropical were significantly different from other subpopulations in row numbers per ear, kernel numbers per ear, and ear color. A genome-wide association study identified 275, 434, and 362 Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for Beijing, Sanya, and best linear unbiased prediction scenarios, respectively, explaining 3.78% to 24.17% of the phenotypic variance. Furthermore, 58 candidate genes with detailed functional descriptions common to more than two scenarios were discovered, with 40 genes being associated with color traits on chromosome 1. After analysis of haplotypes, gene expression, and annotated information, several candidate genes with high reliability were identified, including Zm00001d051328 for ear perimeter and width, zma-MIR159f for ear shape, Zm00001d053080 for kernel width and row number per ear, and Zm00001d048373 for the blue color channel of maize kernels in the red-green-blue color model. This study emphasizes the importance of researching novel phenotypic traits in maize by utilizing high-throughput phenotypic measurements. The identified genetic loci enrich the existing genetic studies related to maize ears.

Imputed whole-genome sequence (WGS) has been proposed to improve genome-wide association studies (GWAS), since all causative mutations responsible for phenotypic variation are expected to be present in the data. This approach was applied on a large number of purebred (PB) and crossbred (CB) pigs for 18 pork color traits to evaluate the impact of using imputed WGS relative to medium-density marker panels. The traits included Minolta A*, B*, and L* for fat (FCOL), quadriceps femoris muscle (QFCOL), thawed loin muscle (TMCOL), fresh ham gluteus medius (GMCOL), ham iliopsoas muscle (ICOL), and longissimus dorsi muscle on the fresh loin (FMCOL). Sequence variants were imputed from a medium-density marker panel (61K for CBs and 50K for PBs) in all genotyped pigs using BeagleV5.0. We obtained high imputation accuracy (average of 0.97 for PBs and 0.91 for CBs). GWAS were conducted for three datasets: 954 CBs and 891 PBs, and the combined CBs and PBs. For most traits, no significant associations were detected, regardless of panel density or population type. However, quantitative trait loci (QTL) regions were only found for a few traits including TMCOL Minolta A* and GMCOL Minolta B* (CBs), FMCOL Minolta B*, FMCOL Minolta L*, and ICOL Minolta B* (PBs) and FMCOL Minolta A*, FMCOL Minolta B*, GMCOL Minolta B*, and ICOL Minolta B* (Combined dataset). More QTL regions were identified with WGS (n = 58) relative to medium-density marker panels (n = 22). Most of the QTL were linked to previously reported QTLs or candidate genes that have been previously reported to be associated with meat quality, pH and pork color; e.g., VIL1, PRKAG3, TTLL4, and SLC11A1, USP37. CTDSP1 gene on SSC15 has not been previously associated with meat color traits in pigs. The findings suggest any added value of WGS was only for detecting novel QTL regions when the sample size is sufficiently large as with the Combined dataset in this study. The percentage of phenotypic variance explained by the most significant SNPs also increased with WGS compared with medium-density panels. The results provide additional insights into identification of a number of candidate regions and genes for pork color traits in different pig populations.

The amazing colors and patterns are fascinating characteristics in all of the aquarium species. However, genetic and breeding molecular investigations of ornamental shrimps are rather limited. Here, we present the first transcriptomic analysis and application of microsatellites based on the chromatophore-encoded genes of Neocaridina denticulata to assist freshwater ornamental shrimp germplasm enhancement and its extensive applications. A total of 65,402 unigenes were annotated, and 4706 differentially expressed genes were screened and identified between super red shrimp and chocolate shrimp strains. Several gene ratios were examined to put in perspective possible genetic markers for the different strains of normal pigmentation development, including flotillin-2-like, keratin, the G protein-coupled receptor Mth2-like, annexin A7, and unconventional myosin-IXb-like. Five simple sequence repeat markers were effective for colored shrimps and were used to develop a marker-assisted selection platform for systematic breeding management program to maintain genetic diversity of the species. These markers could also be used to assist the identification of pure strains and increase the genetic stability of ornamental shrimp color phenotypes. Consequently, our results of microsatellite marker development are valuable for assisting shrimp genetic and selection breeding studies on freshwater ornamental shrimp and related crystal shrimp species.

Assortative mating is a potential outcome of sexual selection, and estimating its level is important to better understand local adaptation and underlying trait evolution. However, assortative mating studies frequently base their conclusions on small numbers of individuals sampled over short periods of time and limited spatial scales even though spatiotemporal variation is common. Here, we characterized assortative mating patterns over 10 years in four populations of the blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus), a passerine bird. We focused on two plumage ornaments-the blue crown and the yellow breast patch. Based on data for 1,657 pairs of birds, we found large interannual variation: assortative mating varied from positive to negative. To determine whether there was nonetheless a general trend in the data, we ran a within-study meta-analysis. It revealed that assortative mating was moderately positive for both ornaments. It also showed that mating patterns differed among populations and especially between two neighboring populations that displayed phenotypic divergence. Our results therefore underscore that long-term studies are needed to draw broad conclusions about mating patterns in natural populations. They also call for studying the potential role of assortative mating in local adaptation and evolution of ornaments in both sexes.

The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas has been introduced widely and massively and became an economically important aquaculture species on a global scale. We estimated heritabilities of growth and shell color traits and their genetic correlations in black shell strain of C. gigas. Analyses were performed on 22 full-sib families in a nested mating design including 410 individuals at harvest (24 months of age). The parentage assignment was inferred based on four panels of multiplex PCR markers including 10 microsatellite loci and 94.9% of the offspring were unambiguously assigned to single parent pairs. The Spearman correlation test (r = - 0.992, P < 0.001) demonstrated the high consistency of the shell pigmentation (SP) and L* and their same efficacy in shell color measurements. The narrow-sense heritability estimated under the animal model analysis was 0.18 ± 0.12 for shell height, 0.25 ± 0.16 for shell length, 0.10 ± 0.09 for shell width, 0.42 ± 0.20 for total weight, 0.32 ± 0.18 for shell weight, and 0.68 ± 0.16 for L*, 0.69 ± 0.16 for shell pigmentation, respectively. The considerable additive genetic variation in growth and shell color traits will make it feasible to produce genetic improvements for these traits in selective breeding program. High genetic and phenotypic correlations were found among growth traits and among shell color traits. To optimize a selection strategy for both fast growth and pure dark shell strain of C. gigas, it is proposed to take both total weight and black shell as joint objective traits in selective breeding program. Our study offers an important reference in the process of selective breeding in black shell color stain of C. gigas and will facilitate to develop favorable breeding strategies of genetic improvements for this economically important strain.
