RESUMO

To prevent ocular pathologies, new generation of dietary supplements have been commercially available. They consist of nutritional supplement mixing components known to provide antioxidative properties, such as unsaturated fatty acid, resveratrol or flavonoids. However, to date, few data evaluating the impact of a mixture mainly composed of those components (Nutrof Total®) on the retina are available. Only one in-vivo preclinical study demonstrated that dietary supplementation (DS) prevents the retina from light-induced retinal degeneration; and only one in-vitro study on Müller cells culture showed that glutamate metabolism cycle was key in oxidative stress response. Therefore, we raised the question about the in-vivo effect of DS on glutamate metabolism in the retina. Herein, we showed that the dietary supplementation promotes in-vivo increase of retinal glutamine amount through a higher glutamine synthesis as observed in-vitro on Muller cells. Therefore, we can suggest that the promotion of glutamine synthesis is part of the protective effect of DS against retinal degeneration, acting as a preconditioning mechanism against retinal degeneration.

Vitamin D deficiency has previously been linked to higher rates of exacerbation and reduced lung function in asthmatics. Previous randomised controlled trials (RCT) investigating the effect of vitamin D supplementation have mainly focussed on children with asthma. Trials involving adults have typically used bolus dosing regimes and the main outcomes have been patient focussed without investigating underlying inflammation. The present study aimed to conduct a 12-week placebo-controlled RCT administering a daily 5000 IU (125 µg) vitamin D3 supplement to adults with mild to moderate asthma. A total of 32 participants were randomised to receive either the 5000 IU vitamin D3 supplement or an identical matching placebo. The primary outcome of the study was lung function measured by ratio of FEV1:FVC (effect size 2.5) with secondary outcomes including asthma symptoms and inflammatory biomarkers. There was a small but statistically significant higher increase in the mean (± SD) ratio of FEV1: FVC from baseline to post-intervention in the vitamin D group (+ 0.05 ± 0.06) compared to the placebo group (+ 0.006 ± 0.04, p = 0.04). There was no effect of the intervention on asthma control test scores, or the inflammatory biomarkers measured. There was a moderate, significant association between baseline plasma 25(OH)D concentration and baseline plasma IL-10 (r = 0.527, p = 0.005) and TNF-α (r = -0.498. p = 0.008) concentrations. A daily vitamin D3 supplement led to slightly improved lung function in adult asthmatics and may be a useful adjunct to existing asthma control strategies, particularly for individuals with suboptimal vitamin D status.

Milk holds a high nutritional value and is associated with diverse health benefits. The understanding of its composition of (poly)phenolic metabolites is limited, which necessitates a comprehensive evaluation of the subject. This study aimed at analyzing the (poly)phenolic profile of commercial milk samples from cows and goats and investigating their sterilization treatments, fat content, and lactose content. Fingerprinting of phenolic metabolites was achieved by using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS). Two hundred and three potential microbial and phase II metabolites of the main dietary (poly)phenols were targeted. Twenty-five metabolites were identified, revealing a diverse array of phenolic metabolites in milk, including isoflavones and their microbial catabolites equol and O-desmethylangolensin, phenyl-γ-valerolactones (flavan-3-ol microbial catabolites), enterolignans, urolithins (ellagitannin microbial catabolites), benzene diols, and hippuric acid derivates. Goat's milk contained higher concentrations of these metabolites than cow's milk, while the sterilization process and milk composition (fat and lactose content) had minimal impact on the metabolite profiles. Thus, the consumption of goat's milk might serve as a potential means to supplement bioactive phenolic metabolites, especially in individuals with limited production capacity. However, further research is needed to elucidate the potential health effects of milk-derived phenolics.

Sphingolipids have recently gained interest as potential players in variety of diseases due to their import roles in human body particularly, the brain. As sphingomyelin is the most common type of sphingolipids, deficits in its distribution to brain cells may contribute to neurological anomalies. However, data is limited regarding the impact of different levels of dietary sphingomyelin intake on neural function especially if this approach can boost cognition and prevent neurological disorders. This review evaluates the effect of dietary sphingomyelin and its metabolites (ceramide and sphingosine-1-phosphate) in animal models and in humans, with a primary focus on its impact on brain health. Additionally, it proposes multiple neuroenhancing effects of sphingomyelin-rich diet. This presents an opportunity to stimulate further research that aims to determine the therapeutic value of dietary sphingomyelin in preventing, improving or slowing the progression of central nervous system disorders.

BACKGROUND: Trace metals are supplemented in cattle to prevent nutrient deficiencies. Levels supplemented to mitigate worst-case basal supply and availability scenarios can, however, result in trace metal intakes far above the nutritional requirements of dairy cows with high feed intakes. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated Zn, Mn, and Cu balance in dairy cows from late lactation through the subsequent mid-lactation, a period of 24 wk characterized by large changes in dry matter intake. METHODS: Twelve Holstein dairy cows were housed in a tie-stall from 10 wk before to 16 wk after parturition and fed 1 unique lactation diet when lactating and a dry cow diet otherwise. After 2 wk of adaptation to the facility and diet, Zn, Mn, and Cu balances were determined at weekly intervals, by calculating the difference between total intakes and complete fecal, urinary, and milk outputs, with the latter 3 fluxes quantified over a 48-h period. Repeated measure mixed models were used to evaluate the effects on trace mineral balances over time. RESULTS: The Mn and Cu balances of cows were not significantly different from 0 mg/d between 8 wk prepartum and calving (P ≥ 0.54), when dietary intake was the lowest of the period evaluated. However, when dietary intake was highest, between wk 6 and 16 postpartum, positive Mn and Cu balances were observed (80 and 20 mg/d, respectively, P ≤ 0.05). Cows were in positive Zn balance throughout the study except during the first 3 wk after calving during which the Zn balance was negative. CONCLUSIONS: Large adaptations occur in trace metal homeostasis in transition cows in response to changes in dietary intake. High dry matter intakes, associated with high milk production of dairy cows, combined with current Zn, Mn, and Cu supplementation practices may exceed regulatory homeostatic mechanisms resulting in potential body accumulation of Zn, Mn, and Cu.

Dietary GABA plays an important role in a variety of physiological functions in animals, but this has been rarely reported in fish. This study investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with GABA on growth, serum antioxidant indicators, digestive enzyme activities, intestinal morphology, and the gene expression of Nile tilapia. Diets containing three different GABA concentrations, 0 (control), 200 mg/kg (GABA200), and 500 mg/kg (GABA500), were fed to Nile tilapia (6.97 ± 0.34 g) for 56 days. The present study found that increasing dietary GABA content could increase the fish growth performance including final body weight, weight gain, specific growth rate, average daily gain, protein efficiency ratio, and feed efficiency compared to the control diet. Interestingly, the feed conversion ratio was improved by dietary GABA supplementation. The antioxidant enzyme activities against ammonia stress of fish fed the GABA diets were significantly higher than the corresponding control group throughout the 96-h ammonia exposure. Moreover, significant increases in digestive enzyme activities including protease, amylase and lipase were found in fish fed the GABA diets. Intestinal morphology analysis revealed increased heights and widths of intestinal villi as well as thickness of the intestinal muscularis in fish fed the GABA diets compared to the control diet. The supplementation of diets with GABA significantly increased the expression level of immune- and growth-related genes. The above results indicate that dietary GABA can modulate the growth, improve their immune response and antioxidant status, gut health and morphology and gene expression of Nile tilapia. Therefore, GABA is a promising feed additive for Nile tilapia aquaculture.

The endothelial glycocalyx (EG) is a gel-like structure that forms a layer in between the surface of the endothelium and lumen. EG was once thought to be merely a structural support for the endothelium. However, in recent years, the importance of EG as a first line of defense and a key regulator to endothelial integrity has been illuminated. With advanced age, EG deterioration becomes more noticeable and at least partially associated with endothelial dysfunction. Hyaluronan (HA), one of the critical components of the EG, has distinct properties and roles to the maintenance of EG and endothelial function. Therefore, given the intimate relationship between the EG and endothelium during the aging process, HA may serve as a promising therapeutic target to prevent endothelial dysfunction.

The growth and development of the fetus and newborn throughout pregnancy and lactation are directly related to the nutritional status of the mother, which has a significant impact on the health of the offspring. The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the susceptibility of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid deficiency in early life to seizures in adulthood. The n-3 PUFAs-deficient mice's offspring were established and then fed with α-LNA diet, DHA-enriched ethyl ester, and DHA-enriched phospholipid-containing diets for 17 days at the age of eight weeks. During this period, animals received intraperitoneal injections of 35 mg/kg of pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) every other day for eight days. The results showed that dietary n-3 PUFA-deficiency in early life could aggravate PTZ-induced epileptic seizures and brain disorders. Notably, nutritional supplementation with n-3 PUFAs in adulthood for 17 days could significantly recover the brain n-3 fatty acid and alleviate the epilepsy susceptibility as well as raise seizure threshold to different levels by mediating the neurotransmitter disturbance and mitochondria-dependent apoptosis, demyelination, and neuroinflammation status of the hippocampus. DHA-enriched phospholipid possessed a superior effect on alleviating the seizure compared to α-LNA and DHA-enriched ethyl ester. Dietary n-3 PUFA deficiency in early life increases the susceptibility to PTZ-induced epilepsy in adult offspring, and nutritional supplementation with n-3 PUFAs enhances the tolerance to the epileptic seizure.

This study compared the recommended dose of sodium citrate (SC, 500 mg/kg body mass) and sodium bicarbonate (SB, 300 mg/kg body mass) for blood alkalosis (blood [HCO3-]) and gastrointestinal symptoms (GIS; number and severity). Sixteen healthy individuals ingested the supplements in a randomized, crossover design. Gelatin capsules were ingested over 15 min alongside a carbohydrate-rich meal, after which participants remained seated for forearm venous blood sample collection and completion of GIS questionnaires every 30 min for 300 min. Time-course and session value (i.e., peak and time to peak) comparisons of SC and SB supplementation were performed using linear mixed models. Peak blood [HCO3-] was similar for SC (mean 34.2, 95% confidence intervals [33.4, 35.0] mmol/L) and SB (mean 33.6, 95% confidence intervals [32.8, 34.5] mmol/L, p = .308), as was delta blood [HCO3-] (SC = 7.9 mmol/L; SB = 7.3 mmol/L, p = .478). Blood [HCO3-] was ≥6 mmol/L above baseline from 180 to 240 min postingestion for SC, significantly later than for SB (120-180 min; p < .001). GIS were mostly minor, and peaked 80-90 min postingestion for SC, and 35-50 min postingestion for SB. There were no significant differences for the number or severity of GIS reported (p > .05 for all parameters). In summary, the recommended doses of SC and SB induce similar blood alkalosis and GIS, but with a different time course.

Obesity (Ob), which has dramatically increased in the last decade, is one of the main risk factors that contribute to the incidence and progression of osteoarthritis (OA). Targeting the characteristics of obesity-associated osteoarthritis (ObOA) may offer new chances for precision medicine strategies in this patient cohort. First, this review outlines how the medical perspective of ObOA has shifted from a focus on biomechanics to the significant contribution of inflammation, mainly mediated by changes in the adipose tissue metabolism through the release of adipokines and the modification of fatty acid (FA) compositions in joint tissues. Preclinical and clinical studies on n-3 polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) are critically reviewed to outline the strengths and weaknesses of n-3 PUFAs' role in alleviating inflammatory, catabolic and painful processes. Emphasis is placed on potential preventive and therapeutic nutritional strategies based on n-3 PUFAs, with a focus on ObOA patients who could specifically benefit from reformulating the dietary composition of FAs towards a protective phenotype. Finally, tissue engineering approaches that involve the delivery of n-3 PUFAs directly into the joint are explored to address the perspectives and current limitations, such as safety and stability issues, for implementing preventive and therapeutic strategies based on dietary compounds in ObOA patients.

In this overview, the latest achievements in dietary origins, absorption mechanism, bioavailability assay, health advantages, cutting-edge encapsulation techniques, fortification approaches, and innovative highly sensitive sensor-based detection methods of vitamin B12 (VB12) were addressed. The cobalt-centered vitamin B is mainly found in animal products, posing challenges for strict vegetarians and vegans. Its bioavailability is highly influenced by intrinsic factor, absorption in the ileum, and liver reabsorption. VB12 mainly contributes to blood cell synthesis, cognitive function, and cardiovascular health, and potentially reduces anemia and optic neuropathy. Microencapsulation techniques improve the stability and controlled release of VB12. Co-microencapsulation of VB12 with other vitamins and bioactive compounds enhances bioavailability and controlled release, providing versatile initiatives for improving bio-functionality. Nanotechnology, including nanovesicles, nanoemulsions, and nanoparticles can enhance the delivery, stability, and bioavailability of VB12 in diverse applications, ranging from antimicrobial agents to skincare and oral insulin delivery. Staple food fortification with encapsulated and free VB12 emerges as a prominent strategy to combat deficiency and promote nutritional value. Biosensing technologies, such as electrochemical and optical biosensors, offer rapid, portable, and sensitive VB12 assessment. Carbon dot-based fluorescent nanosensors, nanocluster-based fluorescent probes, and electrochemical sensors show promise for precise detection, especially in pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is one of the most common chronic inflammatory diseases in the world, which affects oral health. Resveratrol is a polyphenol with therapeutic effects on the inflammation caused by periodontal pathogens. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of resveratrol supplementation on clinical parameters and inflammatory markers in patients with chronic periodontitis. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind study, 40 chronic periodontitis patients underwent non-surgical therapy and were randomly assigned to two intervention and control groups, receiving either resveratrol supplements or a placebo for four weeks. Salivary levels of interleukin-8 (IL-8), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), and clinical parameters, including pocket depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), plaque index (PI), and bleeding index (BI), were measured before and after the intervention. RESULTS: The results showed that in both the case and control groups, after four weeks of using resveratrol, only plaque index (PI) was significantly different compared to the control group (P = 0.0001). However, there were no significant differences in the mean pocket depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), bleeding index (BI), and salivary levels of IL-8 and IL-1ß between the two groups after the intervention. CONCLUSION: Resveratrol complement was helpful as an anti-inflammatory food supplement, along with other non-surgical periodontal treatments in chronic periodontitis patients.

The objective was to evaluate the effects of acai supplementation (AS) on markers of muscle damage. Twelve men participated in the 21-day study. All performed the damage protocol (DP) in two moments, separated by 7 days. The DP consisted of 10 sets of 10 CMJs, with a recovery of 1 min between sets. The AS was performed for 7 days with 40 g/day of dehydrated acai (GA) or placebo (GP). Blood parameters (CK, LDH and Trolox-equivalent antioxidant capacity - TEAC) were evaluated at 0 h and 24 h. Ultrasound images (VL, RF and GM), DOMS in lower limbs and isometric peak torque (IPT) of knee extensors and flexors were evaluated at 0 h, 24 h, 48 h and 72 h after DP. A time-treatment interaction was observed for TEAC (p = 0.01), in which the GA presented increases of 11% after 24 h. Similarly, time-treatment interaction was observed for knee flexors IPT (p = 0.02), where GA showed superior recovery after 24 h (GA = 108 ± 23 vs. GP = 92 ± 24 N∙m) and 72 h (GA = 113 ± 31 vs. GP = 98 ± 26 N∙m). No significance was observed in the fatigue index for knee extensors (p = 0.75) and flexors (p = 0.89), indicating similar fatigue in both situations. We concluded that AS increased the TEAC and promoted faster recovery of the knee flexors IPT when compared to GP.

BACKGROUND: Childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) is a complex multisystem autoimmune disease often associated with pain, fatigue, and mood-related disturbances. cSLE is associated with increased disease severity and higher rates of mortality as compared to adult onset SLE. Therefore, a multi-faceted approach to care, including the use of non-pharmacologic therapies, is essential to ensure optimal patient outcomes. The use of non-pharmacologic therapies as adjunctive treatments has been shown to be beneficial in adults with SLE, yet, their use and effect is less well understood in cSLE. This is the first systematic review to explore the use and quality of evidence of non-pharmacologic approaches to treat cSLE. METHODS: A literature review was performed using PRISMA guidelines. Studies until March 2021 with participants diagnosed with cSLE were included. The quality of the evidence was graded via OCEBM levels of evidence guidelines and bias assessed using Cochrane guidelines. Completed clinical trials (via clinicaltrials.gov) were also searched to identify unpublished results. RESULTS: Eleven published studies consisting of 1152 patients met inclusion criteria for this review, as well as three additional studies with unpublished data on clinicaltrial.gov. Of the published trials, four studies used patient education/support, three studies used dietary supplementation, three used forms of psychotherapy (e.g., Cognitive behavioral therapy), and 1 used aerobic exercise to target the following issues: treatment adherence (n = 3), quality of life (n = 3), fatigue (n = 2), pain (n = 2), depressive symptoms (n = 1), anxiety (n = 1), and health-related outcomes including disease severity (n = 3), cardiovascular disease risk (Cardiovascular disease; n = 3), and muscle function (n = 1). Across investigations, the quality of the evidence based on study design was moderate/low. In terms of potential outcomes, dietary supplementation methods were successful in 2 of 3 studies and were associated with improvements in disease activity and fatigue. Aerobic exercise was effective in decreasing resting heart rate and increasing cardiorespiratory capacity. Patient education/support was related to significantly increased treatment adherence and decreased cardiovascular risk markers. Two of the three studies examining the impact of psychotherapy showed improvements (e.g., in treatment adherence, depression and fatigue). CONCLUSION: This review identifies several promising non-pharmacologic therapies to use as adjunctive treatments to traditional pharmacologic regimens in health and mental health-related outcomes in patients with cSLE. Future well controlled clinical trials would be beneficial to more rigorously evaluate the effects of non-pharmacologic therapies in pediatric populations.

Synbiotic is defined as the dietary mixture that comprises both probiotic microorganisms and prebiotic substrates. The concept has been steadily gaining attention owing to the rising recognition of probiotic, prebiotics, and gut health. Among prebiotic substances, oligosaccharides demonstrated considerable health beneficial effects in varieties of food products and their combination with probiotics have been subjected to full range of evaluations. This review delineated the landscape of studies using microbial cultures, cell lines, animal model, and human subjects to explore the functional properties and host impacts of these combinations. Overall, the results suggested that these combinations possess respective metabolic properties that could facilitate beneficial activities therefore could be employed as dietary interventions for human health improvement and therapeutic purposes. However, uncertainties, such as applicational practicalities, underutilized analytical tools, contradictory results in studies, unclear mechanisms, and legislation hurdles, still challenges the broad utilization of these combinations. Future studies to address these issues may not only advance current knowledge on probiotic-prebiotic-host interrelationship but also promote respective applications in food and nutrition.

The oral antibiotic therapies administered widely to people and animals can cause gut dysbiosis and barrier disruption inevitably. Increasing attention has been directed toward antibiotic-induced gut dysbiosis, which involves a loss of diversity, changes in the abundances of certain taxa and consequent effects on their metabolic capacity, and the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. Treatment with beta-lactam, glycopeptide, and macrolide antibiotics is associated with the depletion of beneficial commensal bacteria in the genera Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. The gut microbiota is a reservoir for antibiotic resistance genes, the prevalence of which increases sharply after antibiotic ingestion. The intestinal barrier, which comprises secretory, physical, and immunological barriers, is also a target of antibiotics. Antibiotic induced changes in the gut microbiota composition could induce weakening of the gut barrier through changes in mucin, cytokine, and antimicrobial peptide production by intestinal epithelial cells. Reports have indicated that dietary interventions involving prebiotics, probiotics, omega-3 fatty acids, and butyrate supplementation, as well as fecal microbiota transplantation, can alleviate antibiotic-induced gut dysbiosis and barrier injuries. This review summarizes the characteristics of antibiotic-associated gut dysbiosis and barrier disruption, as well as the strategies for alleviating this condition. This information is intended to provide a foundation for the exploration of safer, more efficient, and affordable strategies to prevent or relieve antibiotic-induced gut injuries.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of sources and levels of selenium (Se) on juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). A completely randomized design involving a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments was used in this study. Organic Se (L-selenomethionine; SeMet) and inorganic Se (sodium selenite; Na2SeO3) were each added to the basal diet at 1, 3 and 5 mg Se/kg. The basal diet, without Se supplementation, was used as a control. There was a total of 7 experimental diets, and each was fed in triplicate to groups of fish with an initial average body weight of 13.5 g for 8 weeks. The results showed that growth performance was significantly affected by dietary sources and levels of Se (P < 0.05). Fish fed diets supplemented with SeMet of 1.0 mg Se/kg resulted in higher growth performance compared to basal diet (P < 0.05), but Na2SeO3 supplementation did not affect growth. The feed conversion ratio was significantly decreased as dietary sources of SeMet (P < 0.05). Interestingly, fish fed diets supplemented with both forms of Se had lower cholesterol levels than those fed the basal diet (P < 0.05). Moreover, dietary sources and levels of Se significantly increased (P < 0.05) the antioxidant enzyme activities such as lysozyme, catalase, myeloperoxidase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase. Dietary sources and levels of Se significantly could enhance the Nile tilapia resistance against Streptococcusagalactiae infection (P < 0.05). Overall, it can be concluded that the inclusion level of 1.0 mg Se/kg of organic Se in the diet is suggested to be the optimal level for the growth performance and immune response of Nile tilapia. Therefore, dietary supplementation with Se is useful for improving growth, antioxidant status, immune response, and disease resistance.

This study evaluated the individual and combined effects of the dietary Spirulina platensis (SP) and probiotic bacterium Bacillus licheniformis (BL) on the growth performance, immune responses, and disease resistance in goldfish (Carassius auratus). A total of 216 fish (3.39 ± 0.24 g) were randomly distributed in 12 tanks with 18 fish per tank (4 treatments with 3 replications) and fed with diets containing 0% S. platensis and B. licheniformis (T0), 108 CFU/g B. licheniformis (T1), 2.5% S. platensis (T2), and 108 CFU/g B. licheniformis + 2.5% S. platensis (T3(. There were no significant differences in growth parameters. The alternative complement pathway (ACH50) and lysozyme activity were significantly increased in T2 and T3 treatments. No marked differences were observed in total immunoglobulin and protease activity among treatments (P > 0.05). The relative expression of IGF-1 was not affected by experimental diets (P > 0.05). Ghrelin gene showed significantly higher mRNA levels in fish fed with SP and BL (P < 0.05). The relative expression of catalase (CAT), and glutathione reductase (GSR) significantly increased in fish fed with the SP and BL (P < 0.05). No marked difference in glutathione peroxidase (GPX) gene expression was seen between the treatments (P > 0.05). The mRNA levels of lysozyme, IL6, IL-1ß, TGF, and TNF2 transcription were higher in fish fed with SP and BL (P < 0.05). No notable difference was observed in TNF1 and IL10 gene expression between treatments (P > 0.05). Moreover, the result of the challenge test with A. hydrophila showed that goldfish fed with SP and BL had a lower mortality rate than the control. In conclusion, the supplementation of SP and BL can be used as feed additives to enhance disease resistance against A. hydrophila infection by stimulating the immune system in goldfish.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of Aegle marmelos fruit (AMF) extract on the growth performance, biochemical parameters, immune response, antioxidative capacity, and digestive enzyme activity of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Fish were fed a diet supplemented with AMF at concentrations of 0 (AMF0; control), 5 (AMF5), 10 (AMF10), 15 (AMF15), or 20 (AMF20) g/kg for 8 weeks. The results show that the final body weight, weight gain, specific growth rate, average daily gain, and feed conversion ratio were significantly higher in fish fed AMF15 and AMF20 compared to those fed the control diet (P < 0.05). Moreover, significant increases in antioxidant enzyme activities and non-specific immune responses were observed in groups fed AMF15 and AMF20. Interestingly, the level of cholesterol decreased with increasing AMF concentrations in the diet. As dietary AMF levels increased, digestive enzyme activities significantly improved. After the feeding trial, fish were injected intraperitoneally with Streptococcus agalactiae, and the 14-day cumulative mortality was calculated. A high survival rate after challenge with S. agalactiae was observed in all groups that received AMF-supplemented feed. Therefore, the present study suggests that supplementing the diet of Nile tilapia with AMF at a concentration of 20 g/kg could encourage their growth, improve their immunity and antioxidant status, and provide strong protection against S. agalactiae.

A new liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed for the analysis of ginsenosides in three Panax ginseng reference materials (RMs). Extraction procedures were optimized to recover neutral and malonyl-ginsenosides using a methanol-water extraction under basic conditions. Optimized mass fragmentation transitions were obtained for the development of a multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) detection method with electrospray ionization in negative and positive ion mode. Mass fraction values were determined for ginsenosides Rb1, Rb2, Rc, Rd, Re, Rf, and Rg1 in the three ginseng materials (rhizomes, extract, and an oral dosage form). Quantitation of these seven compounds was accomplished with 4-methylestradiol and SRM 3389 Ginsenoside Calibration Solution serving as an internal standard (IS) and calibration standards, respectively. Mass fraction values for the seven ginsenosides ranged from 1.27 mg/g to 21.42 mg/g, 3.25 mg/g to 35.81 mg/g, and 0.56 mg/g to 2.51 mg/g for SRM 3384, SRM 3385, and RM 8664, respectively.
