The central question of our study is which determinants drive smoke alarm ownership and intention to purchase one, and whether we can increase smoke alarm ownership by addressing these determinants in a communication-based intervention. We first made an inventory of possible determinants for smoke alarm prevention by consulting prominent prevention behavior theories protection motivation theory and Health Belief Model and other relevant literature. We expanded this list of determinants based on interviews (n = 15) and used survey data representative for the Netherlands to decide to focus on smoke alarm ownership (rather than installation or maintenance). We then tested the determinants of smoke alarm ownership and buying intention in a survey (n = 622). Based on these results, we ran an A/B test (n = 310) of two messages to stimulate smoke alarm ownership: one emphasized the determinants we found to be strong predictors in the survey (know-how, social norm, annoyance) and one emphasized typical determinants that are often addressed in campaigns but were poor predictors in the survey (vulnerability, severity, benefits). Results showed that the message based on the strong determinants resulted in a significant increase in smoke alarm ownership (9.1%) compared to the control group (0.9%; p = 0.027), while the message using the typical determinants did not lead to significant effects. Taken together, our results give a promising direction for interventions to increase smoke alarm ownership, and above all, show that a comprehensive problem analysis for a specific target behavior is a necessary step to induce behavioral change.

Nowadays, building infrastructures are pushed to become smarter in response to desires for the environmental comforts of living. Enhanced safety upgrades have begun taking advantage of new, evolving technologies. Normally, buildings are configured to respond to the safety concerns of the occupants. However, advanced Internet of Things (IoT) techniques, in combination with edge computing with lightweight virtualization technology, is being used to improve users' comfort in their homes. It improves resource management and service isolation without affecting the deployment of heterogeneous hardware. In this research, a containerized architectural framework for support of multiple concurrent deployed IoT applications for smart buildings was proposed. The prototype developed used sensor networks as well as containerized microservices, centrally featuring the DevOps paradigm. The research proposed an occupant counting algorithm used to check occupants in and out. The proposed framework was tested in different academic buildings for data acquisition over three months. Different deployment architectures were tested to ensure the best cases based on efficiency and resource utilization. The acquired data was used for prediction purposes to aid occupant prediction for safety measures as considered by policymakers.

Climate change and the accumulation of surface fuel are leading to global changes in the occurrence of increasingly severe fires. In light of current budgetary constraints, prescribed fire can be a very cost-efficient tool for both reducing wildfire hazards and managing fire-prone landscapes. However, despite its widespread use in some countries, social and administrative constraints arise when applied at the European or larger scales. Science-based knowledge concerning fire behavior, fuel load reduction, and tree impacts is required to support the use of prescribed fire. Spatial ignition patterns can increase or decrease the spread rate, flame length, and flame residence time according to the objectives of a prescribed fire. This work aims to analyze fire behavior using different fire ignition patterns (strip-heading fire, flanking fire, and spot-heading fire) and meteorological and fuel conditions. Seventy-seven observations or sampling units using twenty-three prescribed fires were established for fire monitoring. Non-linear models based on environmental variables were fitted for the spread rate and flame length. Our study proposes a novel way of sharing scientific knowledge in relation to the most common distances between ignition lines and ignition points used in the southern Iberian Peninsula. The spread rate and flame length can be increased in strip-heading fire, by more than 3.5-fold and more than 1.95-fold, respectively, by modifying only the distance between ignition lines. Flanking fire could lead to a decrease in the spread rate by approximately half. Although spot-heading fire can reduce the spread rate by more than 78% and flame length by more than 41%, the highest distances between points could increase the flame residence time by 39-132%. This research seeks to achieve a trade-off between fire intensity and the impacts of fire on trees, soil, and surface roots.

Forest fires are undesirable situations with tremendous impacts on wildlife and people's lives. Reaching them quickly is essential to slowing down their expansion and putting them out in an effective manner. This work proposes an optimized distribution of fire stations in the province of Valencia (Spain) to minimize the impacts of forest fires. Using historical data about fires in the Valencia province, together with the location information about existing fire stations and municipalities, two different clustering techniques have been applied. Floyd-Warshall dynamic programming algorithm has been used to estimate the average times to reach fires among municipalities and fire stations in order to quantify the impacts of station relocation. The minimization was done approximately through k-means clustering. The outcomes with different numbers of clusters determined a predicted tradeoff between reducing the time and the cost of more stations. The results show that the proposed relocation of fire stations generally ensures faster arrival to the municipalities compared to the current disposition of fire stations. In addition, deployment costs associated with station relocation are also of paramount importance, so this factor was also taken into account in the proposed approach.

This paper presents a study to examine the potential use of machine learning models to build a real-time detection algorithm for prevention of kitchen cooktop fires. Sixteen sets of time-dependent sensor signals were obtained from 60 normal/ignition cooking experiments. A total of 200 000 data instances are documented and analyzed. The raw data are preprocessed. Selected features are generated for time series data focusing on real-time detection applications. Utilizing the leave-one-out cross validation method, three machine learning models are built and tested. Parametric studies are carried out to understand the diversity, volume, and tendency of the data. Given the current dataset, the detection algorithm based on Support Vector Machine (SVM) provides the most reliable prediction (with an overall accuracy of 96.9 %) on pre-ignition conditions. Analyses indicate that using a multi-step approach can further improve overall prediction accuracy. The development of an accurate detection algorithm can provide reliable feedback to intercept ignition of unattended cooking and help reduce fire losses.

Remembering When™ (RW) is a falls and fire prevention program delivered by fire service personnel and homecare organizations to help older adults live safely at home for as long as possible. This study evaluated changes in falls prevention and fire safety behaviors and perceptions and social support associated with falls and residential fires among older adults following delivery of the RW program by fire service personnel. In a convenience sample of adults 65 + years residing in five Iowa communities, 70 received the RW program during a home visit and 75 received the RW program in a group presentation followed by a home visit. Baseline and follow-up telephone interviews were conducted to assess changes in falls and fire safety behaviors, perceptions and social support. Changes were assessed using McNemar's exact test and paired sample t-tests. To control for dependence of 26 households with two participants, one participant was randomly selected and included in the analysis (n = 119). The RW program improved falls and residential fire prevention behaviors among older adults. Perceived efficacy to prevent falls increased from baseline (p = 0.047). Perceived susceptibility (p = 0.021) and control of fires (p = 0.000) increased while perceived severity (p = 0.025) and fear of residential fires (p = 0.019) decreased when compared to baseline. The proportion of participants reporting discussing falls with friends and family increased (p < 0.001), and more participants reported discussing fire prevention with healthcare professionals (p = 0.039). Fire service personnel can be effective deliverers of falls prevention information to older adults.

In 2017, Puerto Rico sustained extensive damage from Hurricane Maria, increasing the risk of fires and carbon monoxide (CO) poisonings. Using a population-based, in-person survey of households with children less than 6 years old in Puerto Rico, we collected data in 2010 concerning the presence of smoke alarms and CO alarms in these households. We generated national estimates by extrapolating the number of households in each stratum using data from the 2010 Census. We determined which household characteristics predicted the presence of these alarms. Of 355 households analyzed, 31% had functional smoke alarms, or an estimated 109,773 households territory wide. The presence of smoke alarms was associated with living in multifamily housing and no child in the household receiving government medical insurance. Public housing or publicly subsidized housing, as compared to owner-occupied housing and unsubsidized rental housing, was associated with having a functional smoke alarm in households with children aged less than 6 years. Based on only six houses having CO alarms, we estimated only 7685 (2%) households had CO alarms. The low prevalence of functional smoke or CO alarms 7 years before Hurricane Maria is unfortunate and should be remedied by ensuring that such alarms are widely installed in current rebuilding activities.

Objectives To demonstrate the feasibility of partnering fire department personnel and home visiting nurses to increase the number of low-income homes protected by smoke alarms. Methods During a regularly scheduled home visit, nurses at the Nurse-Family Partnership of Maricopa County (NFP) informed their clients about an opportunity to have smoke alarms installed in their homes for free. For interested families, nurses sent a referral to the Phoenix Fire Department (PFD), scheduled an appointment, and accompanied the PFD volunteers during the installation. During the appointment, PFD personnel installed alarms and provided safety education. Clients completed a follow-up survey 1-3 months after the installation visit. In-depth interviews were completed with key informants from NFP and PFD to solicit feedback on the program. Results Fifty-two smoke alarm installation visits were completed. Before the fire department arrived, 55% of homes had no working smoke alarm. Almost all (94%) homes received at least one new smoke alarm, and every home had at least one working smoke alarm at the end of the fire department visit. At follow-up, all homes maintained at least one working smoke alarm. Members from both organizations were enthusiastic about, and supportive of the project. NFP nurses appreciated the skill and knowledge of the firefighters; PFD representatives noted that the nurses' relationships with clients made it easier for them to gain access to families who are often described as "hard-to-reach". Conclusions Partnering home visiting nurses and fire departments can be successful to increase the number of vulnerable homes with smoke alarms.

A new fire policy reinforcing aggressive fire suppression was established in Mediterranean France in response to the devastating wildfires of the 1990s, but to what extent this has changed fire activity yet remains poorly understood. For this purpose, we compared the number and location of ignitions and of burned areas between two 20-year periods (1975-1994 vs. 1995-2014), in parallel to the changes in fuel covering, human activity promoting ignitions, and fire weather. The number of fires decreased almost continuously since 1975, but sharply after 1994, suggesting an effect of better fire prevention due to the new policy. But the major change in fire activity is a considerable reduction in fire size and burned areas after 1994, especially during summer and in the most fire-prone places, in response to massive efforts put into fire suppression. These reductions have occurred while the covering by fuel biomass, the human pressure on ignition, and the fire weather index increased, thus making the study area more hazardous. Our results suggest that a strategy of aggressive fire suppression has great potential for counterbalancing the effects of climate changes and human activities and for controlling fire activity in the short term. However, we discuss whether such a suppression-oriented approach is sustainable in the context of global changes, which cast new fire challenges as demonstrated by the devastative fires of 2003 and 2016. We advocate for a more comprehensive fire policy to come.

In the current study, the possibility of incorporating various industrial wastes into fireproofing materials was investigated. It was found that the newly developed materials showed excellent air sealing and fireproofing performance, with air permeability coefficients 3 to 4 orders of magnitude smaller than traditional fire prevention materials. The influence of different parameters on the air permeability was investigated, and the air sealing mechanisms were clarified through microstructure analysis. In addition, the workability and mechanical properties of the fireproofing materials for practical application in coal mine were studied. The new materials derived from industrial wastes had a compact and monolithic structure, and the excellent air tightness could be attributed to the pozzolanic activity of the industrial wastes and the film-forming property of organic polymers. Among the industrial wastes examined, a special coal fly ash with high pozzolanic activity and little free calcium oxide derived the best product with air permeability coefficient, tensile strength and breaking elongation of 4.17 × 10-8 m2/s, 2.14 MPa and 48.90%, respectively. This study provides an economical, environmentally friendly and promising approach for industrial wastes recycling.

Forest fires are one of the main environmental problems in Mediterranean environments and different fire prevention policies have been applied: livestock grazing, prescribed fires and a combination of both. However, none present satisfactory results. In that context, in 1986 the Regional Government of La Rioja started the Plan for Shrub Clearing (PSC), combining shrub clearings and livestock grazing to control fires and improve the land management of abandoned mountain areas. Our study aims to analyse the effects of shrub clearings on forest fires in La Rioja and to compare the main results with those observed in Spain in the last 30 years. We apply an interdisciplinary methodology based on the analysis of the evolution of cleared areas, the evolution of wildfires in La Rioja and Spain, mapping land use and land cover changes, and quantifying the combustibility. Results obtained in La Rioja are very positive compared with the evolution of Spain, both in the reduction of the number of fires and the burned areas. Decreases in the combustible material, fuel load and biomass and in the occurrence of fires (>1 ha) were observed. In addition, clearing shrubland and extensive livestock provided other environmental benefits (i.e. mosaic landscapes, ecosystem services). Finally, this study suggested that they are good and sustainable techniques to prevent and control wildfires and they could be used as a land management strategy in other Mediterranean areas.

With the continually increasing mining depths, heat stress and spontaneous combustion hazards in high-temperature mines are becoming increasingly severe. Mining production risks from natural hazards and exposures to hot and humid environments can cause occupational diseases and other work-related injuries. Liquid nitrogen injection, an engineering control developed to reduce heat stress and spontaneous combustion hazards in mines, was successfully utilized for environmental cooling and combustion prevention in an underground mining site named "Y120205 Working Face" (Y120205 mine) of Yangchangwan colliery. Both localized humidities and temperatures within the Y120205 mine decreased significantly with liquid nitrogen injection. The maximum percentage drop in temperature and humidity of the Y120205 mine were 21.9% and 10.8%, respectively. The liquid nitrogen injection system has the advantages of economical price, process simplicity, energy savings and emission reduction. The optimized heat exchanger used in the liquid nitrogen injection process achieved superior air-cooling results, resulting in considerable economic benefits.

The purpose of this study is to examine factors influencing urban older adults and develop a thematic analysis of how these factors affect seniors' home fire safety (HFS) beliefs and practices. This was a focused ethnography using participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Additionally, public housing records, cognitive functioning, and general health status were assessed. Individual interviews were transcribed verbatim using a constant comparative analysis. Eight seniors participated in the study. Two main themes described older adults' HFS while aging in place: the risk associated with the living environment and the journey associated with maintaining independence. All participants experienced HFS challenges such as limited mobility and financial constraints. Participants' general health and cognitive status additionally influenced their ability to maintain HFS. The findings suggest that urban seniors may have diverse HFS environment risks compared with the general population, highlighting the need for older adult focused HFS interventions.

The exploitation of clean and efficient fire extinguishing materials has substantial implications for improving disaster prevention, mitigation, and relief capabilities, maintaining public safety, and protecting people's lives and property as well as the natural environment. Natural polymer hydrogel with high water containment, excellent film formation, high heat insulation, ecofriendliness, and degradability has huge potential in achieving new breakthroughs for developing clean and efficient fire extinguishing materials and products. In recent years, the exploitation of hydrogel extinguishing materials and the fabrication of products has attracted great attention, gradually replacing traditional fire extinguishing products. In this perspective, an in-depth review of the evolution of hydrogels applied for fire extinguishing and prevention is presented. Firstly, the extinguishing principles of hydrogel extinguishants are explained. Secondly, the preparation strategies and evaluation system of the hydrogel extinguishants are emphatically discussed. Although great progress has been made in developing high-performance hydrogel extinguishants, it remains challenging to develop cost-effective, degradable, and easy-to-use hydrogel extinguishants. Additionally, we highlight the importance of considering the commercial aspects of hydrogel extinguishants. Looking into the future, hydrogel extinguishants are promising, but continued investment in research and development is necessary to overcome the challenges.

This review article delves into the application of nanoparticles (NPs) in fire prevention, aiming to elucidate their specific contribution within the broader context of various fire prevention methods. While acknowledging established approaches such as fire safety principles, fire suppression systems, fire alarm systems, and the use of fire-retardant chemicals and safety equipment, this review focuses on the distinctive properties of NPs. The findings underscore the remarkable potential of NPs in controlling and mitigating fire propagation within both architectural structures and vehicles. Specifically, the primary emphasis lies in the impact of NPs on reducing oxygen levels, as assessed through the limiting oxygen index , a subject explored by various researchers. Furthermore, this review delves into the examination of combustion reduction rates facilitated by NPs, utilizing assessments of ignition time, heat release rate (HRR), and flammability tests (UL-94) on plastic materials. Beyond these aspects, the review evaluates the multifaceted role of NPs in achieving weight reduction and establishing fire-retardant properties. Additionally, it discusses the reduction of smoke, a significant contributor to environmental pollution and health risks. Among the nanoparticles investigated in this study, SiO2, MgAl, and nano hydrotalcite have demonstrated the best results in weight reduction, smoke reduction, and HRR, respectively. Meanwhile, Al2O3 has been identified as one of the least effective treated nanoparticles. Collectively, these findings significantly contribute to improving safety measures and reducing fire risks across a range of industries.

Incidents of waste and biofuel fires are common at all stages of the waste recycling chain and have grave implications for business, employees, firefighters, society, and environment. An early detection of waste and biofuel fires in the smouldering stage could save precious lives, resources, and our environment. Existing fire detection methodologies e.g. handheld temperature sensors, IR cameras, gas sensors, and video and satellite-based monitoring techniques have inherent limitations to efficiently detect smouldering fires. An attempt was made to explore the potential of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) as an alternate tool to address the problem. In the experiments an externally powered resistive wire was employed to initiate the smouldering fire inside the test material (wood pellets, wood shavings, wood fines). Time series of ERT that followed the initiation and development of smouldering were recorded using an automated monitoring instrument setup. The actual geometry of the experimental sample container and electrode setup was integrated in the 3D finite element method (FEM) model grid to perform inverse numerical modelling (inversion) and to develop resistivity tomographic images. The study shows a sharp increase in ratio of resistivity (R/Ro ≥ 50 %) in the test material in the region of smouldering hotspot and demonstrates the potential use of ERT technique for the detection of smouldering hotspots in silos and pile storage of organic material such as wood-based fuels, wood waste, coal, municipal solid waste (MSW), recyclables etc. More research is however required for enabling the use of this technique at the practical scale for different storage conditions.

Cistus scrublands are pyrophytic ecosystems and occur widely across Mediterranean regions. Management of these scrublands is critical to prevent major disturbances, such as recurring wildfires. This is because management appears to compromise the synergies necessary for forest health and the provision of ecosystem services. Furthermore, it supports high microbial diversity, opening questions of how forest management practices impact belowground associated diversity as research related to this issue is scarce. This study aims to investigate the effects of different fire prevention treatments and site history on bacterial and fungi co-response and co-occurrence patterns over a fire-risky scrubland ecosystem. Two different site histories were studied by applying three different fire prevention treatments and samples were analyzed by amplification and sequencing of ITS2 and 16S rDNA for fungi and bacteria, respectively. The data revealed that site history, especially regarding fire occurrence, strongly influenced the microbial community. Young burnt areas tended to have a more homogeneous and lower microbial diversity, suggesting environmental filtering to a heat-resistant community. In comparison, young clearing history also showed a significant impact on the fungal community but not on the bacteria. Some bacteria genera were efficient predictors of fungal diversity and richness. For instance, Ktedonobacter and Desertibacter were a predictor of the presence of the edible mycorrhizal bolete Boletus edulis. These results demonstrate fungal and bacterial community co-response to fire prevention treatments and provide new tools for forecasting forest management impacts on microbial communities.

Climate change has led to altered fire patterns in the Mediterranean basin due to rising temperatures and greenhouse gas emissions, diminishing the resilience of forest ecosystems. To address this threat, forest management increasingly employs preventive measures like controlled burns, aiming to mitigate wildfire damage. However, understanding the impact of prescribed burns on vegetation remains crucial. Our study focuses on assessing the ecological effects of early-season prescribed burns on Macrochloa tenacissima communities within Pinus halepensis Mill forests on the Iberian Peninsula. These forests, with southeast-facing slopes and arid soils, heavily rely on alpha grass for post-fire recovery, acting as a shield against runoff and erosion. Yet, the presence of highly flammable resprouting species can lead to rapid combustible material accumulation. We evaluated parameters like coverage, floral diversity (α-diversity), aboveground plant biomass, photosynthetic activity, and chemical leaf properties of alpha grass, a year after a low-intensity controlled burn. Comparing burnt and unburnt areas revealed significant changes in α-diversity and ecophysiology of Macrochloa tenacissima due to early-season prescribed burns. These short-term shifts underscore the need for further exploration of underlying mechanisms. Our analysis also showed distinct shifts in alpha grass leaf chemical composition between the two plot types, potentially impacting post-fire recovery strategies. Although prescribed burning might not be optimal for reducing fire risk in resprouting species-dominated forests, it conserves native plants and enhances ecosystem diversity, providing valuable ecological benefits. In conclusion, our research deepens our understanding of early-season burning's repercussions on flammable vegetation dynamics and combustible material availability in semi-arid landscapes. It contributes to standardized management protocols, aiding effective forest service administration and wildfire risk reduction.

Coal gangue, as an associated product of coal mining, can cause a large number of piles to undergo slow oxidation and spontaneous combustion, resulting in the production of toxic and harmful gases, leading to casualties, environmental damage, and economic losses. Gel foam has been extensively employed as a fire-retardant material in coal mine fire prevention. The thermal stability and rheological properties of the newly developed gel foam were investigated in this study, as well as its oxygen barrier properties and fire extinguishing effect which were evaluated through programmed temperature rise and field fire extinguishing experiments. The experiment indicated that the temperature endurance of the new gel foam was around twice that of the ordinary gel foam, and this resistance decreased with the increment of foaming times. Moreover, the temperature endurance of the new gel foam with a stabilizer concentration of 0.5% was superior to that of 0.7% and 0.3%. Temperature has a negative effect on the rheological properties of the new gel foam, while the foam stabilizer concentration has a positive effect. The oxygen barrier performance experiment results showed that the CO release rate of coal samples treated with the new gel foam rose relatively slowly with temperature, and the CO concentration of coal samples treated with the new gel foam was only 159 ppm at 100 °C, which was significantly lower than 361.1 ppm after two-phase foam treatment and 715 ppm after water treatment. Through simulating the spontaneous combustion experiment of coal gangue, it was demonstrated that the new gel foam has a much better extinguishing effect than water and traditional two-phase foam. The new gel foam cools gradually and does not re-ignite during the fire extinguishing process, while the other two materials re-ignite after being extinguished.

In long-term care facilities, there are many residents aged 65+ who do not have the ability to seek shelter by themselves in the case of an emergency. Therefore, it is extremely important that nursing home staff be equipped with correct disaster prevention concepts, emergency survival responses, and hazard mitigation measures. The purpose of this study was to discuss the intervention effectiveness of different fire prevention and emergency response trainings at nursing homes, and the relationship and predictivity of awareness to self-efficacy. We used a quasi-experimental research method and recruited staff from two nursing homes through purposive sampling, using a two-team pre- and post-test design to collect results from 41 individuals in the experiment group and 40 individuals in the control group. The research tool was the "Nursing Home Fire Prevention and Emergency Response Awareness and Self-Efficacy Scale", which was used to compare the effectiveness of advanced and general fire safety training. After receiving improved advanced fire safety training, the total score and the result of the experiment group in fire prevention and emergency response awareness and self-efficacy were both better than those of the control group who had received only general fire safety training (p < 0.001); fire prevention and emergency response awareness had a significant and positive correlation with self-efficacy (r = 0.601, p < 0.001), and awareness was a significant predictor variable of self-efficacy (ß = 0.601, p < 0.001). This study finds that the key to improving learning effectiveness includes adding a fire science concept chapter when creating fire safety training material in order to strengthen basic awareness; fire safety training should comprehensively introduce all related duties and responsibilities for staff fire defense formation, thereby enabling mutual responsive support for the needs of the site. Moreover, becoming familiarized with the knowledge requires the appropriate frequency of training and enhancement of the staff's awareness of fire prevention and emergency response, which is the most important key to learning effectiveness.
