RESUMO

Over the past three decades, the synthesis of new ionic liquids (ILs) and the expansion of their use in newer applications have grown exponentially. From the beginning of this vertiginous period, it was known that many of them were hygroscopic, which in some cases limited their use or altered the value of their measured physical properties with all the problems that this entails. In an earlier article, we addressed the hygroscopic grade achieved by the ILs 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methyl sulfate, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethyl sulfate, 1-ethyl-3-methylpyridinium ethyl sulfate, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tosylate, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, 1-butyl-3-methylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate, 1-butyl-1-methylpiperidinium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide, 1-methyl-1-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide, 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide, and methyl trioctyl ammonium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide. The objective was to determine the influence of the chemical nature of the compounds, exposed surface area, sample volume, agitation, and temperature. For this purpose, we exposed the samples to abrupt increases in relative humidity from 15 to 100% for days in an atmosphere chamber and then proceeded with the reverse process in a gentle manner. The results show that the sorption of water from the atmosphere depends on the nature of the IL, especially the anion, with the chloride anion being of particular importance (chloride ≫ alkyl sulfates~bromide > tosylate ≫ tetrafluoroborate). It has also been proven for the EMIM-ES and EMIM-BF4 samples that the mechanism of moisture capture is both absorption and adsorption, and that the smaller the exposed surface area, the higher the ratio of the mass of water per unit area.

RESUMO

Ligustrazine (TMP) is the main active ingredient extracted from Rhizoma Chuanxiong, which is used in the treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, with the drawback of being unstable and readily sublimated. Cocrystal technology is an effective method to improve the stability of TMP. Three benzoic acid compounds including P-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), 3-Aminobenzoic acid (MABA), and 3,5-Dinitrobenzoic acid (DNBA) were chosen for co-crystallization with TMP. Three novel cocrystals were obtained, including TMP-PABA (1:2), TMP-MABA (1.5:1), and TMP-DNBA (0.5:1). Hygroscopicity was characterized by the dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) method. Three cocrystals significantly improved the hygroscopicity stability, and the mass change in TMP decreased from 25% to 1.64% (TMP-PABA), 0.12% (TMP-MABA), and 0.03% (TMP-DNBA) at 90% relative humidity. The melting points of the three cocrystals were all higher than TMP, among which the TMP-DNBA cocrystal had the highest melting point and showed the best stability in reducing hygroscopicity. Crystal structure analysis shows that the mesh-like structure formed by the O-H⋯N hydrogen bond in the TMP-DNBA cocrystal was the reason for improving the stability of TMP.

RESUMO

Hydrophobic coatings from chitosan-surfactant composites (ca. 400 nm thick by UV-Vis spectroscopy) for possible corrosion protection were developed on glass and zinc substrates. The surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS or sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, and SDBS) were added to the chitosan by two methods: mixing the surfactants with the aqueous chitosan solutions before film deposition or impregnating the deposited chitosan films with surfactants from their aqueous solutions. For the mixed coatings, it was found that the lower surface tension of solutions (40-45 mN/m) corresponded to more hydrophobic (80-90°) coatings in every case. The hydrophobicity of the impregnated coatings was especially significant (88° for SDS and 100° for SDBS). Atomic force microscopy studies revealed a slight increase in roughness (max 1.005) for the most hydrophobic coatings. The accumulation of surfactants in the layer was only significant (0.8-1.0 sulfur atomic %) in the impregnated samples according to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Polarization and electron impedance spectroscopy tests confirmed better barrier properties for these samples (40-50% pseudo-porosity instead of 94%). The degree of swelling in a water vapor atmosphere was significantly lower in the case of the impregnated coatings (ca. 25%) than that of the native ones (ca. 75%), measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry. Accordingly, good barrier layer properties require advantageous bulk properties in addition to surface hydrophobicity.

RESUMO

The aging process of atmospheric aerosols usually leads to a mixture of inorganic salts and organic compounds of anthropogenic origin. In organic compounds, polyhydroxy organic acids are important components, however, the study on composition and hygroscopic properties of the mixture containing inorganics and polyhydroxy organic acids is scanty. In this study, gluconic acid, the proxy of polyhydroxy organic acids, is mixed with the representative nitrate (Mg(NO3)2, Ca(NO3)2) to form aerosols. ATR-FTIR and optical microscopy are employed to study the component changes and hygroscopicity as a function of relative humidity. As relative humidity fluctuates, the FTIR-ATR spectra display that the internal mixed gluconic acid (CH2(CH)4(OH)5COOH) and nitrate can react to release acidic gases, forming relevant gluconate and further affecting the hygroscopicity. The specific presentation is particles cannot be recovered to their original size after the dehydration-hydration process and there will be some disparities in GF for mixed particles. For the gluconic acid-Ca(NO3)2/Mg(NO3)2 mixtures with molar ratios of 1:1, higher degree of reaction resulting in the production of large amounts of gluconate should be responsible to the lower hygroscopicity compared to ZSR model. For 1:2 gluconic acid-nitrate mixed systems (with higher nitrate content), the hygroscopicity of mixtures are higher than the ZSR prediction. A possible reason could be 'salt-promoting effect' on the organic fractions of the surplus inorganic salt in the mixture. These data can improve the chemical composition list evaluation, in turn hygroscopic properties and phase state of atmospheric aerosol, and then the climate effect.

RESUMO

Multidrug salts represent more than one drug in a crystal lattice and thus could be used to deliver multiple drugs in a single dose. It showcases unique physicochemical properties in comparison to individual components, which could lead to improved efficacy and therapeutic synergism. This study presents the preparation and scale-up of sulfamethoxazole-piperazine salt, which has been thoroughly characterized by X-ray diffraction and thermal and spectroscopic analyses. A detailed mechanistic study investigates the impact of piperazine on the microenvironmental pH of the salt and its effect on the speciation profile, solubility, dissolution, and diffusion profile. Also, the improvement in the physicochemical properties of sulfamethoxazole due to the formation of salt was explored with lattice energy contributions. A greater ionization of sulfamethoxazole (due to pH changes contributed by piperazine) and lesser lattice energy of sulfamethoxazole-piperazine contributed to improved solubility, dissolution, and permeability. Moreover, the prepared salt addresses the stability issues of piperazine and exhibits good stability behavior under accelerated stability conditions. Due to the improvement of physicochemical properties, the sulfamethoxazole-piperazine salt demonstrates better pharmacokinetic parameters in comparison to sulfamethoxazole and provides a strong suggestion for the reduction of dose. The following study suggests that multidrug salts can concurrently enhance the physicochemical properties of drugs and present themselves as improved fixed-dose combinations.

RESUMO

Sea salt aerosol particles are highly abundant in the atmosphere and play important roles in the global radiative balance. After influence from continental air, they are typically composed of Na+, Cl-, NH4+, and SO42- and organics. Analogous particle systems are often studied in laboratory settings by atomizing and drying particles from a solution. Here, we present evidence that such laboratory studies may be consistently biased in that they neglect losses of solutes to the gas phase. We present experimental evidence from a hygroscopic tandem differential mobility analyzer and an aerosol mass spectrometer, further supported by thermodynamic modeling. We show that, at normally prevailing laboratory aerosol mass concentrations, for mixtures of NaCl and (NH4)2SO4, a significant portion of the Cl- and NH4+ ions are lost to the gas phase, in some cases, leaving mainly Na2SO4 in the dry particles. Not considering losses of solutes to the gas phase during experimental studies will likely result in misinterpretation of the data. One example of such data is that from particle water uptake experiments. This may bias the explanatory models constructed from the data and introduce errors inte predictions made by air quality or climate models.

RESUMO

Interactions between water and organic molecules in sub-4 nm clusters play a significant role in the formation and growth of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particles. However, a complete understanding of the relevant water microphysics has not yet been achieved due to challenges in the experimental characterization of soft nuclei. Here, we use molecular dynamics simulations to study the phase-mixing states, surface tension, water activity, and water accommodation coefficient of organic-water clusters representative of freshly nucleated SOA particles. Our results reveal large deviations from the behavior expected based on continuum theories. In particular, the phase-mixing state has a strong dependence on cluster size; surface tension displays a minimum at a specific organic-water mass ratio (morg/mw ∼ 4.5 in this study) corresponding to a minimum inhibition of droplet nucleation associated with the Kelvin effect; and the water accommodation coefficient increases by a factor of 2 with nanocluster hygroscopic growth, in agreement with recent experimental studies. Overall, our results yield parametric relations for water microphysical properties in sub-4 nm clusters and provide insight into the role of water in the initial stages of SOA nucleation and growth.

RESUMO

Heterogeneous reaction of NO2 with mineral dust aerosol may play important roles in troposphere chemistry, and has been investigated by a number of laboratory studies. However, the influence of mineralogy on this reaction has not been well understood, and its impact on aerosol hygroscopicity is not yet clear. This work investigated heterogeneous reactions of NO2 (∼10 ppmv) with K-feldspar, illite, kaolinite, montmorillonite and Arizona Test Dust (ATD) at room temperature as a function of relative humidity (<1% to 80%) and reaction time (up to 24 hr). Heterogeneous reactivity towards NO2 was low for illite, kaolinite, montmorillonite and ATD, and uptake coefficients of NO2, γ(NO2), were determined to be around or smaller than 1×10-8; K-feldspar exhibited higher reactivity towards NO2, and CaCO3 is most reactive among the nine mineral dust samples considered in this and previous work. After heterogeneous reaction with NO2 for 24 hr, increase in hygroscopicity was nearly insignificant for illite, kaolinite and montmorillonite, and small but significant for K-feldspar; in addition, large increase in hygroscopicity was observed for ATD, although the increase in hygroscopicity was still smaller than CaCO3.

RESUMO

Hard capsules of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) have different degrees of hygroscopicity, which affects the stability and efficacy of drugs. In this paper, 30 kinds of commercially available TCM capsules were used as the research object. The hygroscopicity curves of capsule contents, capsule shells, and capsules were tested respectively, and the first-order kinetic equation was used for fitting. The results show that during the 24 h hygroscopicity process, the capsule shell can reduce the weight gain caused by the hygroscopicity of the contents by 0.80%-53.0% and the hygroscopicity rate of the capsule contents by 1.74%-91.3%, indicating that the capsule shell has a strong delay effect on the hygroscopicity of the contents of the TCM capsules. Seven physical parameters of the contents of 30 kinds of TCM capsules were determined, and 14 prescription process-related parameters were sorted out. A partial least squares model for predicting the hygroscopicity rate of the contents of TCM capsules(with shell) for 24 h was established. It is found that the hygroscopicity rate of the capsule shell is positively correlated with the hygroscopicity of the contents of TCM capsules(with shell), suggesting that the capsule shell with a low hygroscopicity rate is helpful for moisture prevention. In addition, the pre-treatment process route of the preparation and the type of molding raw materials affect the hygroscopicity. A larger proportion of the extract in the capsule content and a smaller proportion of the fine powder of the decoction pieces indicate stronger hygroscopicity of the capsule content. The 24 h hygroscopicity rate of 15% was used as the classification node of hygroscopicity strength, and the hygroscopicity rate constant of 0.58 was used as the classification node of hygroscopicity speed. The classification system of hygroscopicity behaviors of TCM capsules was established: the varieties with strong and fast hygroscopicity accounted for about 6.67%, while those with strong and slow hygroscopicity accounted for about 33.3%; the varieties with weak and fast hygroscopicity accounted for about 26.7%, while those with weak and slow hygroscopicity accounted for about 33.3%. The classification system is helpful to quantify and compare the hygroscopicity behavior of different TCM capsules and provides a reference for the quality improvement, moisture prevention technologies, and material research of TCM capsules.

RESUMO

Atmospheric aerosols are suspended particulate matter of varying composition, size, and mixing state. Challenges remain in understanding the impact of aerosols on the climate, atmosphere, and human health. The effect of aerosols depends on their physicochemical properties, such as their hygroscopicity, phase state, and surface tension. These properties are dynamic with respect to the highly variable relative humidity and temperature of the atmosphere. Thus, experimental approaches that permit the measurement of these dynamic properties are required. Such measurements also need to be performed on individual, submicrometer-, and supermicrometer-sized aerosol particles, as individual atmospheric particles from the same source can exhibit great variability in their form and function. In this context, this review focuses on the recent emergence of atomic force microscopy as an experimental tool in physical, analytical, and atmospheric chemistry that enables such measurements. Remaining challenges are noted and suggestions for future studies are offered.

RESUMO

A series of novel thienopyridine derivatives were designed and synthesized as P2Y12 receptor inhibitors. Several solid compounds were assessed for inhibitory effect where they exhibited stronger potency than clopidogrel. Compound 6b and 6g were evaluated for metabolism to verify that they could overcome clopidogrel resistance and for toxicity where they showed lower toxicity than prasugrel. Compound 6b exhibited lower risk of bleeding than prasugrel and showed good stability under stress testing. Overall, as a promising antiplatelet agent, representative compound 6b showed the following advantages: (1) no drug resistance for CYP2C19 poor metabolizers; (2) higher potency than clopidogrel; (3) lower toxicity than prasugrel; (4) lower risk of bleeding than prasugrel; (5) good stability as a non-salt solid.

RESUMO

Depletion of chloride, nitrate, or ammonium from atmospheric aerosols represents a unique class of displacement reactions in which strong acids (HCl and HNO3) or bases (NH3) are substituted by weaker ones (i.e., dicarboxylic acids or dicarboxylate salts, respectively). These reactions alter the aerosol composition and perturb the atmospheric cycle of volatile compounds, thereby affecting environmental systems and climate. Despite the profound implications, the mechanism of these unique displacement reactions remains unclear. Here, we elucidate the thermodynamics and kinetics of these reactions using the multiphase buffer theory and a diffusion-controlled mass-transfer function, respectively. On the thermodynamic aspect, we find that the effective dissociation constants of the strong acids and bases in aerosols are 2 to 10 orders of magnitude lower than those in bulk solutions. On the kinetic aspect, we find that displacement reactions occur rapidly in aerosol microdroplets with a radius below 10 µm. Within this size range, the characteristic reaction time is always shorter than the lifetime of the aerosols in the atmosphere. Our findings suggest that the unique displacement reactions can significantly modify the composition of atmospheric aerosols, and consequentially, these aerosols may manifest distinct properties unforeseen by the chemistry of homogeneous bulk systems.

RESUMO

The interaction between water vapor and atmospheric aerosol leads to enhancement in aerosol water content, which facilitates haze development, but its concentrations, sources, and impacts remain largely unknown in polluted urban environments. Here, we show that the Indian capital, Delhi, which tops the list of polluted capital cities, also experiences the highest aerosol water yet reported worldwide. This high aerosol water promotes secondary formation of aerosols and worsens air pollution. We report that severe pollution events are commonly associated with high aerosol water which enhances light scattering and reduces visibility by 70%. Strong light scattering also suppresses the boundary layer height on winter mornings in Delhi, inhibiting dispersal of pollutants and further exacerbating morning pollution peaks. We provide evidence that ammonium chloride is the largest contributor to aerosol water in Delhi, making up 40% on average, and we highlight that regulation of chlorine-containing precursors should be considered in mitigation strategies.

RESUMO

The hygroscopicity of marine aerosols may largely impact particle optical properties, cloud activation ability, and consequently the global climate system. This study highlights findings from real-time hygroscopicity and chemical composition measurements in three open-ocean cruises over the Atlantic Ocean. Spatial variations in hygroscopicity (κ) for marine boundary layer particles (≤300 nm) were provided for the first time covering nearly 100° of the latitude over the Atlantic Ocean, ranging from 0.14 to 1.06. Externally mixed particles with remarkably low hygroscopicity (0.14-0.16) were observed near the equator influenced by biomass burning emissions transported from Africa. For marine aerosols, a positive linear correlation evidently existed between κ and wind speed within a range of 5-15 m/s even for nanometer particles. A closure study shows that the measured κ of 300 nm particles is well explained by the bulk chemical composition. A good negative correlation between measured κ and the organic mass fraction in PM1 for marine aerosols was found (slope = -2.26, R2 = 0.44), while a different linear relationship appeared for continental aerosols at several sites (slope = -0.47, R2 = 0.77). Accordingly, we provide a parameterization method to estimate bulk aerosol hygroscopicity both in continental and marine environments using particulate organic fractions.

RESUMO

Water uptake by thin organic films and organic particles on glass substrates at 80% relative humidity was investigated using atomic force microscopy-infrared (AFM-IR) spectroscopy. Glass surfaces exposed to kitchen cooking activities show a wide variability of coverages from organic particles and organic thin films. Water uptake, as measured by changes in the volume of the films and particles, was also quite variable. A comparison of glass surfaces exposed to kitchen activities to model systems shows that they can be largely represented by oxidized oleic acid and carboxylate groups on long and medium hydrocarbon chains (i.e., fatty acids). Overall, we demonstrate that organic particles and thin films that cover glass surfaces can take up water under indoor-relevant conditions but that the water content is not uniform. The spatial heterogeneity of the changes in these aged glass surfaces under dry (5%) and wet (80%) conditions is quite marked, highlighting the need for studies at the nano- and microscale.

RESUMO

Water uptake properties of organic matter (OM) are critical for aerosol direct and indirect effects. OM contains various chemical species that have a wide range of water solubility. However, the role of water solubility on water uptake by OM has poorly been investigated. We experimentally retrieved water solubility distributions of water-soluble OM (WSOM) from combustion of mosquito coil and tropical peat using the 1-octanol-water partitioning method. In addition, hygroscopic growth and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activity of solubility-segregated WSOM were measured. The dominant fraction of WSOM from mosquito coil smoldering was highly soluble (water solubility (S) > 10-2 g cm-3), while that from peat combustion contained ∼40% of less-soluble species (S < 10-3 g cm-3). The difference in water solubility distributions induced changes in the roles of less water-soluble fractions (S < 10-3 g cm-3) on CCN activity. Namely, the less water-soluble fraction from mosquito coil combustion fully dissolved at the point of critical supersaturation, while that for tropical peat smoldering was limited by water solubility. The present result suggests that water solubility distributions of OM, rather than its bulk chemical property, need to be quantified for understanding the water uptake process.

RESUMO

Atmospheric aging of black carbon (BC) leads to changes in its physiochemical properties, exerting complex effects on environment and climate. In this study, we have conducted laboratory chamber experiments to investigate the effects of BC aging on its morphology, hygroscopicity and optical properties by exposing monodisperse fresh BC particles to ambient ubiquitous species of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and ammonia (NH3) in absence of UV light. We show a rapid aging from highly fractal to compacted aggregates for the monodisperse BC particles with an initial diameter of 150 nm, with decline in the dynamic shape factor (χ) from about 1.8 to nearly 1. The effective density of the monodisperse BC particles increases from ∼0.54 to 1.50 g cm-3 accordingly. The aging process leads to that the light scattering, absorption, and single scattering albedo of the monodisperse BC particles are strongly enhanced by factors of 7.0, 1.8 and 3.0 respectively. By comparing with the BC aging from other mechanisms, we reveal a critical role of the composition of the coating materials on BC in determining its light absorption enhancement. Moreover, due to strong water uptake capacity of the aged BC particles, the light absorption enhancement (Eabs) could be 40-60% higher at humid atmosphere compared with dry conditions. This BC aging process from NO2 oxidation of SO2 may occur commonly in polluted regions and thus considerably alter its effects on regional air quality and climate.

RESUMO

A drug-drug multicomponent crystal consisting of metformin (MET) and dobesilate (DBS) was prospectively connected by solvent cooling and evaporating co-crystallization using the multicomponent crystal strategy, not only to optimize the physicochemical properties of single drugs, but also to play a role in the cooperative effect of DBS with the potential vascular protective effects of MET against diabetic retinopathy (DR). The crystal structure analysis demonstrated that MET and DBS were coupled in a 3D supramolecular structure connected by hydrogen-bonding interactions with a molar ratio of 1:1. Almost all hydrogen bond donors and receptors of MET and DBS participated in the bonding, which hindered the combination of remaining potential hydrogen bond sites and water molecules, resulting in a lower hygroscopicity property than MET alone.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Rosa rugosa cv. Plena (RP) is a commercially significant crop with edible flowers. Due to its high medicinal and nutritional value, it has recently attracted increasing attention in the food industry. In this study, the physicochemical properties, antioxidant capacity, and hygroscopicity of four RP powders produced by ball milling were compared. RESULTS: The brightness, redness, and blueness of RP powders improved after superfine grinding. The water and oil holding capacity decreased with a reduction in the particle size but the water solubility index increased from 7.10% to 29.93%. The elements present in the powders were not significantly (P > 0.05) affected by particle size while phytochemicals were released and extracted more easily after superfine grinding, resulting in higher anthocyanin, polyphenol, and flavonoid content (3.06, 34.01, and 3.97 mg g-1 , respectively), and stronger antioxidant capacity than was found with other powders (ABTS (2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activities were 24.51 and 39.81 mM trolox equivalents (TE) g-1 , respectively). Superfine grinding also improved the water-absorption capacity of RP powders under a high-RH environment. CONCLUSION: Superfine grinding is a promising technique for the production of RP powders with stronger bioactive substances and bioactivity. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Dapagliflozin base and a commercial dapagliflozin propanediol hydrate cocrystal (DPF-PDHC) were highly hygroscopic and thermally unstable. In this study, to address this limitation, we prepared a novel dapagliflozin di-L-proline cocrystal (DPF-LPC) and evaluated its physicochemical characterization compared with DPF-PDHC. After the preparation of the DPF-LPC-loaded tablet, its dissolution, stability and bioequivalence in beagle dogs and mini-pigs were assessed. DPF-LPC was well prepared with a dapagliflozin base and L-proline in a molar ratio of 1:2. Similar to DPF-PDHC, DPF-LPC was highly lipophilic and crystalline in nature. However, these two cocrystals exhibited different melting points and crystalline structures, indicating their different cocrystal forms. Moreover, DPF-LPC exhibited less hygroscopicity and lower water content than DPF-PDHC. The DPF-LPC-loaded tablet composed of DPF-LPC, Comprecel M102, lactose monohydrate, crospovidone, magnesium stearate, and Opadry (coating) at a weight ratio of 15.6:104.4:100.0:8.0:2.0:7.0, was dissolution-equivalent to the commercial tablet. Moreover, it provided lower impurities than the commercial tablet, indicating its better stability. In the two animals, there were no significant differences in the plasma concentrations, AUC, Cmax, and Tmax values, suggesting that they were bioequivalent.
