RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine the relationship between basal visual acuity (VA) and basal optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters of patients with idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM). METHODS: The study included 200 eyes of 200 patients with iERM. In the evaluation of basal VAs, logMAR 0.3 (0.5 on Snellen chart) was accepted as the limit, and the patients were divided into two groups as Group 1 with VA values below logMAR 0.3 and Group 2 with those above logMAR 0.3. Using OCT, the ellipsoid zone (EZ), interdigitation zone (IZ), external limiting membrane (ELM) integrity, peaked appearance of EZ in the fovea, disorganization of the inner retinal layers (DRIL), central foveal thickness (CFT), maximum retinal thickness (MRT), total photoreceptor length (TPL), photoreceptor outer segment length (PROSL), photoreceptor deformity index (PDI), and inner retinal layer irregularity index (IRLII) were evaluated and compared between the groups. RESULTS: There were an equal number of patients in Group 1 and Group 2. The preservation of ELM, EZ, and IZ integrity and the peaked appearance of EZ in the fovea were observed at higher rates in Group 1, whereas the rate of DRIL was higher in Group 2 (p < 0.05 for all). In the multiple regression analysis performed to evaluate categorical OCT parameters, only the presence of DRIL was found to be significantly associated with VA (p < 0.003). CFT*, MRT*, and IRLII** were significantly lower in Group 1 (*p < 0.001, **p = 0.001). TPU, PROSL, and FDI were similar between the two groups (p > 0.05 for all). CONCLUSION: According to the multiple regression analysis, only the presence of DRIL was correlated with lower VA values. Among the OCT parameters, an increase in CFT and MRT, as well as the IRLII value moving away from 1 were related to lower VA values.

RESUMO

Epidermal three-dimensional (3D) topography/quantification has not been completely characterized yet. The recently developed line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT) provides real-time, high-resolution, in-vivo 3D imaging of the skin. This pilot study aimed at quantifying epidermal metrics (epidermal thicknesses, dermal-epidermal junction [DEJ] undulation and keratinocyte number/shape/size) using 3D LC-OCT. For each study participant (8 female, skin-type-II, younger/older volunteers), seven body sites were imaged with LC-OCT. Epidermal metrics were calculated by segmentations and measurements assisted by artificial intelligence (AI) when appropriate. Thicknesses of epidermis/SC, DEJ undulation and keratinocyte nuclei volume varied across body sites. Evidence of keratinocyte maturation was observed in vivo: keratinocyte nuclei being small/spherical near the DEJ and flatter/elliptical near the skin surface. Skin microanatomy can be quantified by combining LC-OCT and AI. This technology could be highly relevant to understand aging processes and conditions linked to epidermal disorders. Future clinical/research applications are to be expected in this scenario.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness concordance when measured by spectral domain (SD) and swept source (SS) optical coherence tomography (OCT), and to compare glaucoma-discriminating capability. METHODS: RNFL thicknesses were measured with the scan circle, centered on the optic nerve head, in 55 healthy, 41 glaucoma suspected, and 87 glaucomatous eyes. The RNFL thickness measured by the SD-OCT (sdRNFL thickness) and SS-OCT (ssRNFL thickness) were compared using the t-test. Bland-Altman analysis was performed to examine their agreement. We compared areas under the receiver operating characteristics curve and examined sdRNFL and ssRNFL thickness for discriminating glaucomatous eyes from healthy eyes, and from glaucoma suspect eyes. RESULTS: The average ssRNFL thickness was significantly greater than sdRNFL thickness in healthy (110.0 ± 7.9 vs. 100.1 ± 6.8 µm, p < 0.001), glaucoma suspect (96.8 ± 9.3 vs. 89.6 ± 7.9 µm, p < 0.001), and glaucomatous eyes (74.3 ± 14.2 vs. 69.1 ± 12.4 µm, p = 0.011). Bland-Altman analysis showed that there was a tendency for the difference between ssRNFL and sdRNFL to increase in eyes with thicker RNFL. The area under the curves of the average sdRNFL and ssRNFL thickness for discriminating glaucomatous eyes from healthy eyes (0.984 vs. 0.986, p = 0.491) and glaucoma suspect eyes (0.936 vs. 0.918, p = 0.132) were comparable. CONCLUSIONS: There was a tendency for ssRNFL thickness to increase, compared with sdRNFL thickness, in eyes with thicker RNFL. The ssRNFL thickness had comparable diagnostic capability compared with sdRNFL thickness for discriminating glaucomatous eyes from healthy eyes and glaucoma suspect eyes.
