RESUMO

Disaster research predominantly focuses on citizens, not on migrants. This tilted spotlight needs to be readjusted, since many advanced countries around the world have become immigration countries, and safeguarding the lives of migrants at times of disaster has become an important and immediate policy issue. Hence, this research concentrates on disaster management to protect the lives of migrants in a disaster-prone and de facto immigration country. The particular country and event in question are Japan and the northern Osaka earthquake of June 2018. More than 100 migrants who lived near the earthquake's epicentre rushed to an evacuation shelter managed by the local municipal government of Minoh City, Osaka Prefecture. While non-governmental organisations attract more attention, this paper centres on a local government and demonstrates the key role that it can play in both bridging and building networks across different communities, and thus in safeguarding the lives of migrants at times of disaster.

RESUMO

Ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) has emerged as a promising framework for understanding and managing the long-term interactions between fisheries and the larger marine ecosystems in which they are nested. However, successful implementation of EBFM has been elusive because we still lack a comprehensive understanding of the network of interacting species in marine ecosystems (the food web) and the dynamic relationship between the food web and the humans who harvest those ecosystems. Here, we advance such understanding by developing a network framework that integrates the complexity of food webs with the economic dynamics of different management policies. Specifically, we generate hundreds of different food web models with 20-30 species, each harvested by five different fishers extracting the biomass of a target and a bycatch species, subject to two different management scenarios and exhibiting different information in terms of avoiding bycatch when harvesting the target species. We assess the different ecological and economic consequences of these policy alternatives as species extinctions and profit from sustaining the fishery. We present the results of different policies relative to a benchmark open access scenario where there are no management policies in place. The framework of our network model would allow policymakers to evaluate different management approaches without compromising on the ecological complexities of a fishery. This article is part of the theme issue 'Connected interactions: enriching food web research by spatial and social interactions'.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Most people believe that student-athletes experience fewer difficulties related to mental health than non-sport participants. However, several studies have shown high depression levels or emotional difficulties in adolescent athletes. Most secondary school students have access to athletic trainers in their schools. Secondary school athletic trainers (SSATs) are medical professionals who can provide health care for student-athletes, and they could be appropriate supporters in providing mental health management in secondary schools. However, there are no studies that have addressed their preparedness and confidence level to manage potential risk factors and mental health disorders. This study aims to ascertain preparedness and confidence levels from SSATs' perspectives in handling mental health disorders using a survey based on the mental health management guidelines and consensus statement. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study design. The research team created an online survey questionnaire based on the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Mental Health Guidelines for Secondary School and Interassociation Recommendation: A Consensus Statement. Utilizing the NATA Research Survey Service, the online survey was emailed to SSATs who self-categorized as secondary school athletic trainers in the NATA membership system. (n = 171, 65% completion rate). SPSS was used to analyze the survey data. RESULT: This study found that 29.2% of SSATs reported they have policies or guidelines regarding mental health disorders management for minors. The most frequent policy was mandatory reporting in cases in which an individual is being abused or neglected (80.5%). The highest confidence area was aligned with the most frequent policy. The least frequent policy was considering unique stressors and triggers with student-athletes to recognize the potential mechanisms that may cause a mental illness or exacerbate an existing mental illness (58.5%). Even though the least frequent policy was not aligned with the least confidence area, it was the second lowest confidence level. This study identified significant differences between two different employment structures: school-based employment and hospital-based employment structures. Policies were more common in school-based employment than in hospital-based employment structures. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated the gap between organizational and individual preparation. The majority of SSATs respondents expressed moderate to high confidence in their ability to manage mental health disorders, despite the lack of mental health policies or procedures in their secondary schools. This study recommends that SSATs create guidelines or procedures in the areas where they are least confident and prepared to offer mental health management for minor student-athletes. They can use the interassociation recommendations and the NATA guidelines for mental health care to close the gap.

Abstract The present study sought to examine the mediating role of organizational trust in the relationship between perceived organizational support, perception of personnel management policies and practices, and turnover intentions. The sample consisted of 250 employees, predominantly women (60.8%), with a mean age of 28 years and an average length of employment of 2.8 years. Most of them was employed in private companies (89.25%) and presented incomplete higher education (60.4%). The data was analyzed through descriptive statistics and path analysis (Structural Equations Modeling) so as to appraise the mediation relationships and indirect effects between the variables, analyzing which of them represent direct or indirect predictors of turnover intentions. The results indicated that the proposed model was only partially corroborated, given that the mediation relationships were partial and the indirect effects were not significative. We recommend further studies involving both other samples and the inclusion of other variables in the research models.

This research was instigated not only by our interest in studying and intervening on workers health, but also by our awareness of the current relevance of call centers for the productive sector. We took into account the transformations in labor due to the new technologies, globalization and the changes in telecommunication. This study aimed at pointing out the relationship between management systems and the call center workers health-illness process, as well asat finding out the way labor is organized (management systems) in telecommunication companies, identifying how these characteristics are expressed in workers health, and promoting the predominant human resources policies. Data was collected in the biggest four call centers in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, through interviews, electronic texts, inspections in companies and a research diary. These analyses resulted in a new view on call centers management and health polices.

This paper aimed to research the current business discourse about the human resources policies and understand the consequences of those to the working class. A literature review was held and some works, that portrayed the business discourse and the criticisms directed to it, were selected. Being found that the human resources policies are geared towards the strategy and organizational competitiveness, aligning the member of the organization with the company strategy and using the workers' competences as competitiveness to the corporation. The business discourse defends the autonomy of the workers, the personal development of the employee and the flexibility of the working relations. The critic about this discourse indicates that the autonomy defended is limited to the solution of problems on production. The personal development projects inside the organization interfere in the subjectivities of the workers, happening a severe bounce of these proposals about the workers' health and their alienation about the class consciousness. The study indicates two paths for discussion: the disclosure of the human resources policies as a possible place of struggle and achievements for the workers, and the urge of the psychologists to take political actions.
