RESUMO

Global resource extraction raises concerns about environmental pressures and the security of mineral supply. Strategies to address these concerns depend on robust information on natural resource endowments, and on suitable methods to monitor and model their changes over time. However, current mineral resources and reserves reporting and accounting workflows are poorly suited for addressing mineral depletion or answering questions about the long-term sustainable supply. Our integrative review finds that the lack of a robust theoretical concept and framework for mass-balance (MB)-consistent geological stock accounting hinders systematic industry-government data integration, resource governance, and strategy development. We evaluate the existing literature on geological stock accounting, identify shortcomings of current monitoring of mine production, and outline a conceptual framework for MB-consistent system integration based on material flow analysis (MFA). Our synthesis shows that recent developments in Earth observation, geoinformation management, and sustainability reporting act as catalysts that make MB-consistent geological stock accounting increasingly feasible. We propose first steps for its implementation and anticipate that our perspective as "resource realists" will facilitate the integration of geological and anthropogenic material systems, help secure future mineral supply, and support the global sustainability transition.

Background: In 1995, Remer and Manz reported potential renal acid load (PRAL) values of various foods, quantifying their estimated impact on acid-base balance. Their estimation considered ionic dissociation, sulphur metabolism and intestinal absorption rates for several micronutrients and proteins. Notably, PRAL values are based on food content data from the early 1990s and may nowadays no longer adequately reflect accurate estimates. Some foods' macronutrient and mineral content has declined over the past three decades due to changes in soil mineral health. Aim: We hypothesize that the 1995 PRAL values no longer adequately reflect reliable estimates of the current acid-base impact of some foods. Methods: Based on specific examples, we argue that these values overestimate the alkalizing effects of various fruits and vegetables. Conclusion: Discussing evidence in favour of (and against) our hypothesis, we conclude that the 1995 PRAL estimates should nowadays rather be used as a relative guidance and reviewed carefully.

Phosphorus (P) inclusion in broiler diets needs to meet the physiological demands at a specific developmental stage to ensure the performance, health, and welfare of the birds and minimize nutrient losses. Toward a more efficient utilization of P in broiler husbandry, a timed nutritional conditioning strategy might enhance the endogenous mechanisms of mineral homeostasis and thus reduce dietary P supply of mineral sources. In this study, following a variable P supply in the starter phase, the effects of a dietary P depletion of broiler chickens were investigated at different developmental stages. Physiological adaptation mechanisms were elucidated based on zootechnical performance, endocrine parameters, regulation of intestinal P transport, bone characteristics, and health aspects. The results revealed a marked response to P depletion at the earliest developmental phase, after which indications of effective compensatory mechanism were detectable with advancing ages. Potential mechanisms that enable broilers to maintain mineral homeostasis primarily include endocrine control mediated by calcitriol actions, as well as intestinal P uptake and mineral mobilization from the bone. Conclusively, the precise timing, duration, and extent of a P depletion strategy in the broiler chicken might be considered for optimized nutrient utilization.
