BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Accurate mosquito species identification is the basis of entomological surveys and effective vector control. Mosquito identification is either done morphologically using diagnostic features mentioned in taxonomic keys or by molecular methods using cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (coxI) and Internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2). METHODS: We performed a larval survey for Aedes mosquitoes from eight different geographical regions in Tamil Nadu, India. The mosquitoes collected during the survey were characterized using both morphological and molecular markers. RESULTS: During an entomological survey from eight different geographical regions in Southern India, a morphological variety named Aedes aegypti var. luciensis was observed. The variant mosquitoes were characterized using both morphological and molecular markers. The variant mosquitoes differed only in the dark scaling of 5th segment of hind-tarsi. Around one third to two third of the 5th segment in variant mosquitoes was dark which has been described as white in identification keys. No other significant difference was observed in adults or immature stages. The variation was heritable and coexisting in the field with the type form mosquitoes. Comparison of the genetic profile of coxI and ITS2 were similar in variant and the type form indicating both of them to be conspecific. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION: The morphological variant mosquitoes were found genetically similar to the Ae. aegypti type form. However, considering its high prevalence and coexistence with Ae. aegypti type form in different geographical regions, detailed studies on bionomics, ecology, genetics, behavior as well as its plausible role in disease transmission are warranted.

AIMS: The acetabular morphology varies greatly among individuals, and hypoplasia is more common in Asia than in Europe. Dislocation after bipolar hip arthroplasty (BHA) for femoral neck fracture occurs at a constant rate, and is affected by the acetabular morphology. This study aimed to clarify individual differences in the acetabula of Asian patients with displaced femoral neck fractures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty patients with displaced femoral neck fractures were assessed (50 fractured hips, 50 non-fractured hips). On CT corrected by the anterior pelvic plane, the 100 hips were assessed regarding acetabular coverage (six parameters), acetabular depth (two parameters), and acetabular opening angle (four parameters). Additional parameters related to the fracture and sex were examined. The percentile of each parameter was shown for all hips. RESULTS: There was no patient with hip dysplasia defined as superior acetabular sector angle (SASA) less than 110° Compared with men, women had a significantly smaller anterior acetabular sector angle (AASA) (p = 0.016), and significantly larger acetabular inclination angle (p = 0.006) and acetabular index angle (p = 0.034). In the group with a normal SASA, seven hips (7.3%) had an anterior wall defect (AASA<50°) and five hips (5.2%) had a posterior wall defect (posterior acetabular sector angle<90°). CONCLUSION: Older adults with femoral neck fractures can have anterior wall and posterior wall defects, even if their SASA is normal. Hidden acetabular dysplasia may be related to post-BHA dislocation. So, our results suggest that is important to accurately evaluate the acetabulum of patients with femoral neck fracture before surgery.

We investigated the feasibility of using the DNA barcode region in identifying Deltocephalus from China. Sequences of the barcode region of the mitochondrial COI gene were obtained for 98 specimens (Deltocephalus vulgaris - 88, Deltocephalus pulicaris - 5, Deltocephalus uncinatus - 5). The average genetic distances among morphological and geographical groups of D. vulgaris ranged from 0.9% to 6.3% and among the three species of Deltocephalus ranged from 16.4% to 21.9% without overlap, which effectively reveals the existence of a "DNA barcoding gap". It is important to assess the status of these morphological variants and explore the genetic variation among Chinese populations of D. vulgaris because the status of this species has led to taxonomic confusion because specimens representing two distinct morphological variants based on the form of the aedeagus are often encountered at a single locality. Forty-five haplotypes (D. vulgaris - 36, D. pulicaris - 5, D. uncinatus - 4) were defined to perform the phylogenetic analyses; they revealed no distinct lineages corresponding either to the two morphotypes of D. vulgaris or to geographical populations. Thus, there is no evidence that these variants represent genetically distinct species.

RESUMO

Morphological variations were observed in specimens of the sand fly species Sergentomyia bailyi Sinton 1931 collected from Pondicherry Union Territory, India. Examination of morphological characteristics showed differences in the length of sensilla chaeticum on antennal flagellomere 3 (A3) in males and females, in the size and shape of the spermathecae in females, and in the position of accessory spines on the gonostyle of males. In our previous study, DNA barcoding characterization of this sand fly species collected from Pondicherry UT revealed molecular variations within the S. bailyi population. This study confirms the existence of a species complex within S. bailyi population at Pondicherry UT.
