In mammals, chromatin organization undergoes drastic reorganization during oocyte development. However, the dynamics of three-dimensional chromatin structure in this process is poorly characterized. Using low-input Hi-C (genome-wide chromatin conformation capture), we found that a unique chromatin organization gradually appears during mouse oocyte growth. Oocytes at late stages show self-interacting, cohesin-independent compartmental domains marked by H3K27me3, therefore termed Polycomb-associating domains (PADs). PADs and inter-PAD (iPAD) regions form compartment-like structures with strong inter-domain interactions among nearby PADs. PADs disassemble upon meiotic resumption from diplotene arrest but briefly reappear on the maternal genome after fertilization. Upon maternal depletion of Eed, PADs are largely intact in oocytes, but their reestablishment after fertilization is compromised. By contrast, depletion of Polycomb repressive complex 1 (PRC1) proteins attenuates PADs in oocytes, which is associated with substantial gene de-repression in PADs. These data reveal a critical role of Polycomb in regulating chromatin architecture during mammalian oocyte growth and early development.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Endothelial cells (ECs) play a crucial role in various physiological processes, particularly those related to the cardiovascular system, but also those affecting the entire organism. The biology of ECs is regulated by multiple biochemical stimuli and epigenetic drivers that govern gene expression. We investigated the angiogenic potential of ECs from a protein citrullination perspective, regulated by peptidyl-arginine deiminases (PADs) that modify histone and non-histone proteins. Although the involvement of PADs has been demonstrated in several physiological processes, inflammation-related disorders and cancer, their role in angiogenesis remains unclear. METHODS: To elucidate the role of PADs in endothelial angiogenesis, we used two human EC models: primary vein (HUVECs) and microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC-1). PADs activity was inhibited using irreversible inhibitors: BB-Cl-amidine, Cl-amidine and F-amidine. We analyzed all three steps of angiogenesis in vitro : proliferation, migration, and capillary-like tube formation, as well as secretory activities, gene expression and signaling in ECs. RESULTS: All used PAD inhibitors reduced the histone H3 citrullination (H3cit) mark, inhibited endothelial cell migration and capillary-like tube formation, and favored an angiostatic activity in HMEC-1 cells, by increasing PEDF (pigment epithelium-derived factor) and reducing VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) mRNA expression and protein secretion. Additionally, BB-Cl-amidine reduced the total activity of MMPs (Matrix metalloproteinases). The observed effects were underlined by the inhibition of Akt phosphorylation.>. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that pharmacological inhibitors of citrullination are promising therapeutic agents to target angiogenesis.

We present a review outlining the basic mechanism, background, recent technical developments, and clinical applications of aqueous dielectric padding in the field of MRI. Originally meant to be a temporary solution, it has gained traction as an effective method for correcting B1 + inhomogeneities due to the unique properties of the calcium titanate and barium titanate perovskites used. Aqueous dielectric pads have used a variety of high-permittivity materials over the years to improve the quality of MRI acquisitions at 1.5 and 3 T and more recently for 7 T neuroimaging applications. The technical development and assessment of these pads have been advanced by an increased use of mathematical modeling and electromagnetic simulations. These tools have allowed for a more complete understanding of the physical interactions between dielectric pads and the RF coil, making testing and safety assessments more accurate. The ease of use and effectiveness that dielectric pads offer have allowed them to become more commonplace in tackling imaging challenges in more clinically focused environments. More recently, they have seen usage not only in anatomical imaging methods but also in specialized metabolic imaging sequences such as GluCEST and NOEMTR . New colossally high-permittivity materials have been proposed; however, practical utilization has been a continued challenge due to unfavorable frequency dependences as well as safety limitations. A new class of metasurfaces has been under development to address the shortcomings of conventional dielectric padding while also providing increased performance in enhancing MRI images.

BACKGROUND: Menstruation is a major physiological change in a woman's life, but lack of knowledge, poor practices, socio-cultural barriers, poor access to products and their improper disposal have significant consequences on health, dignity and well-being of women and adolescent girls. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the knowledge and practices related to menstrual health and hygiene amongst females of 10-49 years of age; explore the experiences and challenges of women during menstruation; and identify the key predictors of healthy menstrual health and hygiene. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional study design, we adopted a mixed methods approach for data collection. For quantitative household survey, a total of 921 respondents were selected from three districts of Odisha. Qualitative findings through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews supplemented the survey findings and helped to identify the barriers affecting good menstrual practices. Epi data version 2.5 and R 4.2.2 was used for data entry and data analysis, respectively. Descriptive statistics was used to calculate proportion, mean and standard deviation; Chi square test was used to measure the association between categorical variables. Bivariate and multivariate logistics analyses were done to identify predictors of healthy menstrual health and hygiene. For qualitative data analysis, thematic analysis approach was adopted using software Atlas.ti 8. RESULTS: For 74.3% respondents, mothers were the primary source of information; about 61% respondents were using sanitary pad. The mean age at menarche was 12.9 years and almost 46% of respondents did not receive any information about menstruation before menarche. Lower age and education up to higher secondary level or above had statistically significant associations with the knowledge about menstruation. Age, caste, respondent's education, mother's education, sanitation facility, availability of water, accessibility and affordability for sanitary pads were found to be strongly associated with good menstrual hygiene practices. CONCLUSION: Traditional beliefs regarding menstruation still persists at the community level. Educating mothers, increasing awareness about safe menstrual hygiene, providing adequate water and sanitation facilities and ensuring proper disposal of menstruation products need priority attention.

PURPOSE: Crowe IV developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a catastrophic hip disease. Moreover, obtaining ideal clinical efficacy in conventional total hip arthroplasty (THA) is often difficult. In this study, we aimed to assess the mid-term clinical results of THA with porous tantalum trabecular metal (TM) pads for acetabular reconstruction in the treatment of Crowe IV DDH. METHODS: A cohort of 28 patients (32 hips) diagnosed with Crowe type IV DDH who underwent acetabular reconstruction during THA using TM pads with scheduled follow-up between 2011 and 2018, were included in this study. Eight cases were men and 24 were women, with a mean age of 48.4 years (range, 36-72 years) and a mean follow-up was 74.3 months (range, 42-132 months). All patients underwent acetabular reconstruction using TM pads and total hip replacement with subtrochanteric osteotomy. RESULTS: At the final follow-up, 28 hips (87.5%) demonstrated mild or no postoperative limping. The Harris Hip Score improved from 58.4 ± 10.6 preoperatively to 85.6 ± 8.9. The mean pain, stiffness, and function scores on the Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis index were 86.5 ± 10.2, 87.3 ± 12.4 and 85.4 ± 11.6 respectively. The mean score of patient satisfaction was 90.4 ± 7.6. Additionally, the SF-12 physical summary score was 41.8 ± 5.6 and the SF-12 mental summary score was 51.6 ± 5.4. TM construct survivorship due to all-cause failure was 90.6% at 5 years with 3 hips at risk, 87.5% at 10 years with 4 hips at risk. The survivorship due to failure from aseptic loosening was 96.9% at 5 years with 1hips at risk and 93.75% at 10 years with 2 hips at risk. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated satisfactory mid-term clinical and radiological results with the application of TM pads for acetabular reconstruction combined with THA in patients with Crowe IV DDH. Products that may reduce menstrual flow from the endometrial cavity to the vagina (i.e. tampons and menstrual cups) could facilitate retrograde menstruation and the spillage of blood into the myometrium, two mechanisms which could be major determinants in endometriosis and adenomyosis pathogenesis. The aim of this narrative review is to summarize the evidence regarding the mechanical role menstrual products may have in the pathogenesis of these two conditions. Evidence in this regard is inconclusive. While Darrow and colleagues observed that 14 or more years of tampon use were associated with endometriosis (OR 3.6; 95% CI, 1.04-13.5); in Meaddough and colleagues' retrospective study, the percentage of women using pads only was significantly higher among those with endometriosis than among those without the condition (31% vs 22%). Three further groups failed to find an association between endometriosis/adenomyosis and any type of menstrual product. The only case that may be considered as a sort of proof-of-concept of the association between products potentially reducing anterograde menstrual flow and endometriosis was reported by Spechler and colleagues, who described the case of a 41 year-old who developed endometriosis after having used a menstrual cup on a regular basis. However, the number of studies on the subject is scarce, study populations are exiguous and a greater attention to temporality of endometriosis onset in relation to when women started habitually using a specific menstrual product is needed. Confounding variables including type and quantity of endocrine disruptors contained in menstrual products should also be addressed. At the present moment, no recommendation can be provided on the safety of one type of menstrual product compared to another.

The human microbiome exists throughout the body, and it is essential for maintaining various physiological processes, including immunity, and dysbiotic events, which are associated with autoimmunity. Peptidylarginine deiminase (PAD) enzymes can citrullinate self-proteins related to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) that induce the production of anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPAs) and lead to inflammation and joint damage. The present investigation was carried out to demonstrate the expression of homologs of PADs or arginine deiminases (ADs) and citrullinated proteins in members of the human microbiota. To achieve the objective, we used 17 microbial strains and specific polyclonal antibodies (pAbs) of the synthetic peptide derived from residues 100-200 of human PAD2 (anti-PAD2 pAb), and the recombinant fragment of amino acids 326 and 611 of human PAD4 (anti-PAD4 pAb), a human anti-citrulline pAb, and affinity ACPAs of an RA patient. Western blot (WB), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), elution, and a test with Griess reagent were used. This is a cross-sectional case-control study on patients diagnosed with RA and control subjects. Inferential statistics were applied using the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test generated in the SPSS program. Some members of phyla Firmicutes and Proteobacteria harbor homologs of PADs/ADs and citrullinated antigens that are reactive to the ACPAs of RA patients. Microbial citrullinome and homolog enzymes of PADs/ADs are extensive in the human microbiome and are involved in the production of ACPAs. Our findings suggest a molecular link between microorganisms of a dysbiotic microbiota and RA pathogenesis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to use the texture analysis of ultrasound images to distinguish the features of microchambers (a superficial thinner layer) and macrochambers (a deep thicker layer) in heel pads between the elderly with and without diabetes, so as to preliminarily explore whether texture analysis can identify the potential injury characteristics of deep tissue under the influence of diabetes before the obvious injury signs can be detected in clinical management. METHODS: Ultrasound images were obtained from the right heel (dominant leg) of eleven elderly people with diabetes (DM group) and eleven elderly people without diabetes (Non-DM group). The TekScan system was used to measure the peak plantar pressure (PPP) of each participant. Six gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) features including contrast, correlation, dissimilarity, energy, entropy, homogeneity were used to quantify texture changes in microchambers and macrochambers of heel pads. RESULTS: Significant differences in GLCM features (correlation, energy and entropy) of macrochambers were found between the two groups, while no significant differences in all GLCM features of microchambers were found between the two groups. No significant differences in PPP and tissue thickness in the heel region were observed between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: In the elderly with diabetes who showed no significant differences in PPP and plantar tissue thickness compared to those without diabetes, several texture features of ultrasound images were found to be significantly different. Our finding indicates that texture features (correlation, energy and entropy) of macrochambers could be used for early detection of soft tissue damage associated with diabetes.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with HLA-DRB1 alleles expressing the "shared epitope." RA is usually preceded by the emergence of anti-citrullinated protein autoantibodies (ACPAs). ACPAs recognize citrulline residues on numerous proteins. Conversion of arginine into citrulline is performed by enzymes called peptidyl arginine deiminases (PADs). We have previously demonstrated that C3H mice immunized with PADs can produce ACPAs by a hapten-carrier mechanism. Here, we address the influence of HLA-DR alleles in this model in mice expressing RA-associated HLA-DRB1*04:01 (KO/KI*04:01), HLA-DRB1*04:04 (KO/KI*04:04), or non-RA-associated HLA-DRB1*04:02 (KO/KI*04:02) after murine PAD2 immunization. Immunization with mPAD2 triggers production of ACPAs in wild-type (WT) and HLA-DR4 C57BL/6 mice. Both I-Ab and HLA-DR are involved in the activation of mPAD2-specific T lymphocytes. Among HLA-DR4 mice, mice expressing RA-associated HLA-DRB1*04:01 are the best responders to mPAD2 and the best anti-citrullinated peptide antibody producers.

PURPOSE: High permittivity dielectric pads are known to be effective for tailoring the RF field and improving image quality in high field MRI. Despite a number of studies reporting benign specific absorption rate (SAR) effects, their "universal" safety remains an open concern. In this work, we evaluate the impact of the insulation material in between the pad and the body, using both RF simulations as well as phantom experiments. METHODS: A 3T configuration with high permittivity material was simulated and characterized experimentally in terms of B1 + fields and RF power absorption, both with and without electrical insulation in between the high permittivity material and the sample. Different insulation conditions were compared, and electromagnetic analyses on the induced current density were performed to elucidate the effect. RESULTS: Increases in RF heating of up to 49% were observed experimentally in a tissue-mimicking phantom after removing the material insulation. The B1 + magnitude and RF transceive phase were not affected. Simulations indicated that an insulation thickness of 0.5-2 mm should be accounted for in numerical models in order to ensure reliable results. CONCLUSION: A reliable RF safety assessment of high permittivity dielectric pads requires accounting for the insulating properties of the plastic encasing. Ignoring the electrical insulation can lead to erroneous results with substantial increases in local SAR at the interface. Conversely, the material insulation does not need to be modeled to predict the B1 + effects during the design of the pad geometry.

With the fast-global development of packaging techniques, the potential antimicrobial effect of CO2, as a safe, cheap and readily available gas, makes it the integral component for packaging of meat products. The associated spoilage and/or pathogenic bacteria on raw meat may respond in different ways to elevated CO2 concentrations. The growth of some aerobic Gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas spp. is significantly inhibited but some LAB bacteria may be allowed to grow faster and dominate the product. The antimicrobial efficacy of enriched CO2 packaging is attributed to the rate of CO2 solubility in the product which is itself affected by the level of headspace CO2, product pH, temperature and the ratio of headspace gas to product (G:P). This review, first, explores the varied range of beef and sheep meat spoilage and pathogenic bacteria and the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters that may influence the pattern of microbial growth and meat spoilage rate during storage. Then, the antimicrobial mechanism of elevated CO2 packaging will be discussed and the different approaches of achieving enriched CO2 packaging i.e. the traditional technique of flushing a desired gas mixture and/or using the new commercially developed CO2 emitters will then be compared in terms of their strengths, limitations and technical mode of action.

Numerous post-translational modifications (PTMs) govern the collective metabolism of a cell through altering the structure and functions of proteins. The action of the most prevalent PTMs, encompassing phosphorylation, methylation, acylations, ubiquitination and glycosylation is well documented. A less explored protein PTM, conversion of peptidylarginine to citrulline, is the subject of this review. The process of citrullination is catalysed by peptidylarginine deiminases (PADs), a family of conserved enzymes expressed in a variety of human tissues. Accumulating evidence suggest that citrullination plays a significant role in regulating cellular metabolism and gene expression by affecting a multitude of pathways and modulating the chromatin status. Here, we will discuss the biochemical nature of arginine citrullination, the enzymatic machinery behind it and also provide information on the pathological consequences of citrullination in the development of inflammatory diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, systemic lupus erythematosus, periodontitis and COVID-19), cancer and thromboembolism. Finally, developments on inhibitors against protein citrullination and recent clinical trials providing a promising therapeutic approach to inflammatory disease by targeting citrullination are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Studies have proven that lack of access to menstruation products negatively affects school attendance, academic performance, and individual health. Implementing "period policies," or programs offering free menstruation products, are becoming popular in schools, businesses, and communities in high-income countries. U.S.-based Purdue University announced in February 2020 that free pads and tampons would be stocked in all women's and gender-neutral restrooms in campus buildings. This study aimed to capture the experiences of menstruators about free menstrual products and the impact of a university-wide free menstruation management product policy and program. A second purpose was to understand how access to menstrual management products is intertwined with broader socio-cultural experiences of a menstruator. METHODS: As part of a larger study, virtual focus group discussions (n = 32 across 5 focus groups) were conducted in February 2021. Eligible participants were student-menstruators attending Purdue University. We used thematic analysis techniques for data analysis, allowing for a constant comparative approach to data contextualization and theme identification. RESULTS: Focus group discussions revealed vivid menarche and menstruation experiences, shifting period culture, recollections of shame and stigma, and use of various technologies to manage menstruation. Recommendations for community-based programs offering free products included maintaining stock, making informed product choices, and broadly distributing program information to increase awareness of free product placements. CONCLUSIONS: Findings offer practical recommendations that will contribute to menstruation management and period poverty solutions for university communities.

PURPOSE: Intraoperative control of air leaks is important for preventing prolonged air leaks after surgery. The usefulness of suturing free pericardial fat pads (FPFPs) as pledgets for repairing air leaks was investigated. METHODS: A total of 111 patients who underwent anatomical lung resection and required suture repair for intraoperative air leaks were retrospectively reviewed. Mattress sutures were performed using polyglycolic acid (PGA) sheets (PGA group; n = 60) in the early period (April 2014 to March 2018) and FPFPs (FPFP group; n = 51) in the late period (April 2018 to March 2021) as pledgets. RESULTS: More patients had a history of smoking in the FPFP group than in the PGA group. The duration of air leakage was significantly shorter (mean 1.2 vs. 3.5 days, p = 0.002) and prolonged air leakage (> 5 days) was less frequently observed (23.3% vs. 5.9%, p = 0.016) in the FPFP group than in the PGA group. The FPFP group had fewer cases requiring pleurodesis and with recurrent air leaks than in the PGA group. In one case in the FPFP group, fat necrosis with fibrosis and fibrous adhesion to the visceral pleura was found on a pathological examination. CONCLUSION: Parenchymal repair using FPFPs as pledgets can reduce prolonged air leaks after surgery.

This paper presents the development of cheap and selective Paper-based Analytical Devices (PADs) for selective Pd(II) determination from very acidic aqueous solutions. The PADs were obtained by impregnating two cm-side squares of filter paper with an azoic ligand, (2-(tetrazolylazo)-1,8 dihydroxy naphthalene-3,6,-disulphonic acid), termed TazoC. The so-obtained orange TazoC-PADs interact quickly with Pd(II) in aqueous solutions by forming a complex purple-blue-colored already at pH lower than 2. The dye complexes no other metal ions at such an acidic media, making TazoC-PADs highly selective to Pd(II) detection. Besides, at higher pH values, other cations, for example, Cu(II) and Ni(II), can interact with TazoC through the formation of stable and pink-magenta-colored complexes; however, it is possible to quantify Pd(II) in the presence of other cations using a multivariate approach. To this end, UV-vis spectra of the TazoC-PADs after equilibration with the metal ions solutions were registered in the 300-800 nm wavelength range. By applying Partial Least Square regression (PLS), the whole UV-vis spectra of the TazoC-PADs were related to the Pd(II) concentrations both when present alone in solution and also in the presence of Cu(II) and Ni(II). Tailored PLS models obtained with matrix-matched standard solutions correctly predicted Pd(II) concentrations in unknown samples and tap water spiked with the metal cation, making the method promising for quick and economical sensing of Pd(II).

For many decades, Nannocharax luapulae has been considered to be widespread in the southern part of the Upper Congo basin. However, meristic, morphometric and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) barcoding evidence revealed that its geographical distribution is restricted to the Luapula-Moero basin. The populations of the Upper Lualaba are assigned to a new species, N. chochamandai. This new species, though highly similar to N. luapulae, can readily be distinguished from it by its lower number of lateral line scales, 41-46 (vs. 49-55), its pectoral fin reaching the pelvic-fin insertion (vs. not reaching the pelvic-fin insertion) and its pelvic fin reaching the base of the anal fin (vs. not reaching the base of the anal fin). Specimens of N. chochamandai display thickened pads on the first three pelvic-fin rays that exhibit intraspecific variation in development, which appears to be related to the flow-strength of the river in which these Nannocharax specimens occur. Nannocharax luapulae is redescribed and an updated identification key to the Nannocharax species of the Congo basin sensu lato is provided as well. Some fish conservation issues related to N. luapulae and N. chochamandai are also highlighted.

BACKGROUND: Several phenotypes of non-inflammatory palmar and plantar keratoderma (PPK) have been described in patients of Sub-Saharan African descent. They include keratosis punctata of the palmar creases, marginal keratoderma, also known as acrokeratoelastoidosis or focal acral hyperkeratosis, knuckle pads, other forms of diffuse hyperkeratosis, the very rare "mosaic acral keratosis", and ainhum. A previous survey has shown that these various forms of PPK are particularly frequent in patients of Sub-Saharan African descent and that they commonly occur concurrently, suggesting that they could form part of a single entity called "African" Acral Keratoderma (AAK). AIM: To assess the validity of the concept of AAK and clarify its main characteristics. METHODS: A retrospective, descriptive, monocenter study was carried out on patients with AAK seen at our institution between 2009 and 2020. RESULTS: There were 42 patients (median age 38 years, range: 12-69 years), all of Sub-Saharan African descent. The male-female sex ratio was 0.3. Thirty-three (78%) had diffuse keratoderma, 25 (59%) had marginal keratoderma on their hands and/or feet, 20 (48%) had knuckle pads, 20 (48%) had keratosis punctata of the palmar creases, 3 had ainhum, and 2 had mosaic acral keratoderma. Mixed forms were seen in 76% of the patients (n = 32). Familial histories were reported by 17 patients (40%). Treatment was topical in over 90% of patients and systemic in 9 patients (21%). Ainhum was managed surgically. CONCLUSION: This retrospective study provides additional evidence for the concept of AAK. A genetic origin is suggested by the familial aggregation of cases.

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence is a common and impactful condition. Despite the availability of incontinence pads specifically designed for the male form, many men use pads designed to fit the female anatomy. AIM: This clinical audit-based study compares female/unisex and male incontinence pads in male community patients with urinary incontinence. METHOD: A survey was used to collect Likert-scale data on overall satisfaction and satisfaction with specific aspects of female/unisex and male incontinence pads, as well as with their health and wellbeing and situation and attitudes before and after intervention. Qualitative data were collected on positive features of, reasons for dissatisfaction with and suggested changes to each pad. RESULTS: Among 18 participants, and in all but one domain, satisfaction scores were higher for male pads overall, with the greatest increases in score (1-5) for physical coverage of genital area (1.5), ability to hold urine without leaks (1.4) and level of comfort when wet (1.3). Using a male pad had a positive impact on participants' sense of health and wellbeing. Positive qualitative feedback focused on comfort, ease of use and reliability, as well as the anatomical fit of the male pad. CONCLUSIONS: Sex-specific fit is an important factor in the acceptability of an incontinence pad for men with urinary incontinence. Wearing pads specifically designed for the male anatomy provides men with a greater sense of comfort and confidence.

PURPOSE: Ultra-high field MR imaging lacks B1 + inhomogeneity due to shorter RF wavelengths used at higher field strengths compared to human anatomy. CEST techniques tend to be highly susceptible to B1 + inhomogeneities due to a high and uniform B1 + field being necessary to create the endogenous contrast. High-permittivity dielectric pads have seen increasing usage in MR imaging due to their ability to tailor the spatial distribution of the B1 + field produced. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate that dielectric materials can be used to improve glutamate weighted CEST (gluCEST) at 7T. THEORY AND METHODS: GluCEST images were acquired on a 7T system on six healthy volunteers. Aqueous calcium titanate pads, with a permittivity of approximately 110, were placed on either side in the subject's head near the temporal lobes. A post-processing correction algorithm was implemented in combination with dielectric padding to compare contrast improvement. Tissue segmentation was performed to assess the effect of dielectric pads on gray and white matter separately. RESULTS: GluCEST images demonstrated contrast enhancement in the lateral temporal lobe regions with dielectric pad placement. Tissue segmentation analysis showed an increase in correction effectiveness within the gray matter tissue compared to white matter tissue. Statistical testing suggested a significant difference in gluCEST contrast when pads were used and showed a difference in the gray matter tissue segment. CONCLUSION: The use of dielectric pads improved the B1 + field homogeneity and enhanced gluCEST contrast for all subjects when compared to data that did not incorporate padding.

Gekkotan lizards of the genus Hemidactylus exhibit derived digital morphologies. These include heavily reduced antepenultimate phalanges of digits III and IV of the manus and digits III-V of the pes, as well as enigmatic cartilaginous structures called paraphalanges. Despite this well-known morphological derivation, no studies have investigated the development of these structures. We aimed to determine if heterochrony underlies the derived antepenultimate phalanges of Hemidactylus. Furthermore, we aimed to determine if convergently evolved paraphalanges exhibit similar or divergent developmental patterns. Herein we describe embryonic skeletal development in the hands and feet of four gekkonid species, exhibiting a range of digital morphologies. We determined that the derived antepenultimate phalanges of Hemidactylus are the products of paedomorphosis. Furthermore, we found divergent developmental patterns between convergently evolved paraphalanges.
