PURPOSE: To quantify the effect of cathode-tube-ray (CRT) monitor refresh rate on the measurement of the upper limit of complete temporal summation (critical duration) in the peripheral visual field of healthy observers. METHODS: Contrast thresholds were measured for seven achromatic spot stimuli (diameter 0.48°) of varying duration (nominal values: 10-200 ms) at an eccentricity of 8.8° along the 45°, 135°, 225° and 315° meridians of the visual field in three healthy, psychophysically experienced observers. Stimuli were presented on a CRT display with a refresh rate of 60 and 160 Hz. Contrast thresholds were expressed as contrast energy with stimulus durations being estimated using (1) the sum-of-frames (SOF) method and (2) Bridgeman's method incorporating measurements of phosphor persistence. Estimates of the critical duration were produced using iterative two-phase regression analysis. RESULTS: With stimulus duration expressed as SOF equivalent the critical duration was, on average, 10.6 ms longer with a refresh rate of 60 Hz (mean 45.7 ms, S.D. 10.1 ms) relative to 160 Hz (35.1 ms, S.D. 7.6 ms). When the Bridgeman method was used, minimal differences (1.8 ms) in critical duration values between the two refresh rates (60 Hz: 33.0 ms, S.D. 9.4 ms; 160 Hz: 31.2 ms, S.D. 7.0 ms) were observed. Identical trends were observed in all three subjects. CONCLUSIONS: Psychophysical measurements of temporal summation are independent of variations in CRT refresh rate when the Bridgeman method, incorporating measured values of phosphor persistence, is used to estimate stimulus duration. This has significant implications for the specification of stimulus duration in psychophysical studies of vision employing conventional display monitors.

Objective. Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) often struggle to balance user experience and system performance. To address this challenge, this study employed stimuli in the 55-62.8 Hz frequency range to implement a 40-target BCI speller that offered both high-performance and user-friendliness.Approach. This study proposed a method that presents stable multi-target stimuli on a monitor with a 360 Hz refresh rate. Real-time generation of stimulus matrix and stimulus rendering was used to ensure stable presentation while reducing the computational load. The 40 targets were encoded using the joint frequency and phase modulation method, offline and online BCI experiments were conducted on 16 subjects using the task discriminant component analysis algorithm for feature extraction and classification.Main results. The online BCI system achieved an average accuracy of 88.87% ± 3.05% and an information transfer rate of 51.83 ± 2.77 bits min-1under the low flickering perception condition.Significance. These findings suggest the feasibility and significant practical value of the proposed high-frequency SSVEP BCI system in advancing the visual BCI technology.

The refresh rate is one of the important parameters of visual presentation devices, and assessing the effect of the refresh rate of a device on motion perception has always been an important direction in the field of visual research. This study examined the effect of the refresh rate of a device on the motion perception response at different stimulation frequencies and provided an objective visual electrophysiological assessment method for the correct selection of display parameters in a visual perception experiment. In this study, a flicker-free steady-state motion visual stimulation with continuous scanning frequency and different forms (sinusoidal or triangular) was presented on a low-latency LCD monitor at different refresh rates. Seventeen participants were asked to observe the visual stimulation without head movement or eye movement, and the effect of the refresh rate was assessed by analyzing the changes in the intensity of their visual evoked potentials. The results demonstrated that an increased refresh rate significantly improved the intensity of motion visual evoked potentials at stimulation frequency ranges of 7-28 Hz, and there was a significant interaction between the refresh rate and motion frequency. Furthermore, the increased refresh rate also had the potential to enhance the ability to perceive similar motion. Therefore, we recommended using a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz in motion visual perception experiments to ensure a better stimulation effect. If the motion frequency or velocity is high, a refresh rate of≥240 Hz is also recommended.

Many studies have investigated the effect of dynamic message signs (DMS) on drivers' speed reduction and compliance in work zones, yet only a few studies have examined the design of sign content of DMS. The purpose of this study was to develop design standards for DMS to improve driver compliance and worker safety. This study investigated the impact of sign content, frame refresh rate, and sign placement on driver speed reduction, compliance, and eye movements. A total of 44 participants were recruited for this study. Each participant completed 12 simulated driving tasks in a high-fidelity driving simulator. A small-scale field study was also conducted to test the effect of DMS on vehicle speed in a highway work zone. Results showed sign content and placement had no impact on speed reduction and compliance. However, sign frame refresh rate was found to have a significant effect on drivers' initial speed and speed reduction. Participants had longer fixation duration on DMS when worker presence was mentioned in the sign content. Results of the field study suggested that the DMS is most effective at night.
