RESUMO

In this article, I present three main points that could benefit the "vocal learning and rhythmic synchronization hypothesis", encompassing neurogenetic mechanisms of gene expression transmission and single motor neuron function, classification of different behavioral motor phenotypes (e.g., spontaneous vs. voluntary), and other evolutionary considerations (i.e., the involvement of reward mechanisms).

Synchronization of body movements to an external beat is a universal human ability, which has also been recently documented in nonhuman species. The neural substrates of this rhythmic motor entrainment are still under investigation. Correlational neuroimaging data suggest an involvement of the dorsal premotor cortex (dPMC) and the supplementary motor area (SMA). In 14 healthy volunteers, we more specifically investigated the neural network underlying this phenomenon using a causal approach by an established 1-Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) protocol, which produces a focal suppression of cortical excitability outlasting the stimulation period. Synchronization accuracy between rhythmic cues and right index finger tapping, as measured by the mean time lag (asynchrony) between motor and auditory events, was significantly affected when the right dPMC function was transiently perturbed by "off-line" focal rTMS, whereas the reproduction of the rhythmic sequence per se (inter-tap-interval) was spared. This approach affected metrical rhythms of different complexity, but not non-metrical or isochronous sequences. Conversely, no change in auditory-motor synchronization was observed with rTMS of the SMA, of the left dPMC or over a control site (midline occipital area). Our data strongly support the view that the right dPMC is crucial for rhythmic auditory-motor synchronization in humans.

We examined the effects of light exposure on the theront excystment circadian rhythm in Cryptocaryon irritans using a newly invented apparatus, which enabled us to examine the excystment rhythms of theronts from tomonts with low labor. Using the apparatus, we examined the timings of theront excystment from tomonts exposed directly to light and from tomonts exposed to light-exposed seawater by counting the number of excysted theronts. We found that the theront excystment time changed only when tomonts were directly exposed to light, indicating that light reception is essential for circadian rhythm entrainment. When tomonts were exposed to light only once for 12 h, either on Day 1, Day 2, or Day 3 after leaving host and being encysted, the circadian rhythm was entrained according to the photoperiod given on tomonts. Tomonts exposed to a low light (1 lx) with 12L:12D photoperiod daily showed a circadian rhythm similar to that in tomonts exposed to an intense light (500 lx) under the same photoperiod. When tomonts were incubated at 22 °C, 25 °C, or 28 °C under the same photoperiod, almost the same circadian rhythm was developed, suggesting temperature has little effect on the circadian rhythm entrainment between the range, even though the date of excystment was delayed in lower temperatures. These results suggest the circadian rhythm of theront excystment can be entrained in tomonts on the seabed of inner bays where net-cage aquaculture is conducted, and be involved in the outbreaks of cryptocaryoniasis there.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by motor and cognitive deficits that negatively impact on activities of daily living. While dopaminergic medications are used to attenuate motor symptoms, adjuvant therapies such as acoustic-based non-pharmacological interventions are used as a complement to standard drug treatments. At present, preliminary studies of acoustic-based interventions such as rhythmic-auditory stimulation (RAS) and vibroacoustic therapy (VAT) suggest two competing hypotheses: (1) RAS may recruit alternative motor networks that may bypass faulty spatiotemporal motor networks of movement in PD; or (2) the use of RAS enhances BG function through entrainment of beta oscillatory activities. In this mini review article, we discuss the mechanisms underlying the role of acoustic-based interventions and how it may serve to improve motor deficits such as gait impairments and tremors. We further provide suggestions for future work that may use a combination of RAS, VAT, and physical therapy to improve motor function in PD.

Patterns of nonverbal and verbal behavior of interlocutors become more similar as communication progresses. Rhythm entrainment promotes prosocial behavior and signals social bonding and cooperation. Yet, it is unknown if the convergence of rhythm in human speech is perceived and is used to make pragmatic inferences regarding the cooperative urge of the interactors. We conducted two experiments to answer this question. For analytical purposes, we separate pulse (recurring acoustic events) and meter (hierarchical structuring of pulses based on their relative salience). We asked the listeners to make judgments on the hostile or collaborative attitude of interacting agents who exhibit different or similar pulse (Experiment 1) or meter (Experiment 2). The results suggest that rhythm convergence can be a marker of social cooperation at the level of pulse, but not at the level of meter. The mapping of rhythmic convergence onto social affiliation or opposition is important at the early stages of language acquisition. The evolutionary origin of this faculty is possibly the need to transmit and perceive coalition information in social groups of human ancestors. We suggest that this faculty could promote the emergence of the speech faculty in humans.
