RESUMO

Accurate assessment of rolling resistance is important for wheelchair propulsion analyses. However, the commonly used drag and deceleration tests are reported to underestimate rolling resistance up to 6% due to the (neglected) influence of trunk motion. The first aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy of using trunk and wheelchair kinematics to predict the intra-cyclical load distribution, more particularly front wheel loading, during hand-rim wheelchair propulsion. Secondly, the study compared the accuracy of rolling resistance determined from the predicted load distribution with the accuracy of drag test-based rolling resistance. Twenty-five able-bodied participants performed hand-rim wheelchair propulsion on a large motor-driven treadmill. During the treadmill sessions, front wheel load was assessed with load pins to determine the load distribution between the front and rear wheels. Accordingly, a machine learning model was trained to predict front wheel load from kinematic data. Based on two inertial sensors (attached to the trunk and wheelchair) and the machine learning model, front wheel load was predicted with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 3.8% (or 1.8 kg). Rolling resistance determined from the predicted load distribution (MAE: 0.9%, mean error (ME): 0.1%) was more accurate than drag test-based rolling resistance (MAE: 2.5%, ME: -1.3%).

Road parameter identification is of great significance for the active safety control of tracked vehicles and the improvement of vehicle driving safety. In this study, a method for establishing a prediction model of the engine output torques in tracked vehicles based on vehicle driving data was proposed, and the road rolling resistance coefficient f was further estimated using the model. First, the driving data from the tracked vehicle were collected and then screened by setting the driving conditions of the tracked vehicle. Then, the mapping relationship between the engine torque Te, the engine speed ne, and the accelerator pedal position ß was obtained by a genetic algorithm-backpropagation (GA-BP) neural network algorithm, and an engine output torque prediction model was established. Finally, based on the vehicle longitudinal dynamics model, the recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm was used to estimate the f. The experimental results showed that when the driving state of the tracked vehicle satisfied the set driving conditions, the engine output torque prediction model could predict the engine output torque T^e in real time based on the changes in the ne and ß, and then the RLS algorithm was used to estimate the road rolling resistance coefficient f^. The average coefficient of determination R of the T^e was 0.91, and the estimation accuracy of the f^ was 98.421%. This method could adequately meet the requirements for engine output torque prediction and real-time estimation of the road rolling resistance coefficient during tracked vehicle driving.

The study of the rolling tyre is a problem framed in the general context of nonlinear elasticity. The dynamics of the related phenomena is still an open topic, even though few examples and models of tyres can be found in the technical literature. The interest in the dissipation effects associated with the rolling motion is justified by their importance in fuel-saving and in the context of an eco-friendly design. However, a general lack of knowledge characterizes the phenomenon, since not even direct experience on the rolling tyre can reveal the insights of the correlated different dissipation effects, as the friction between the rubber and the road, the contact kinematics and dynamics, the tyre hysteretic behaviour and the grip. A new technology, based on fibre Bragg grating strain sensors and conceived within the OPTYRE project, is illustrated for the specific investigation of the tyre dissipation related phenomena. The remarkable power of this wireless optical system stands in the chance of directly accessing the behaviour of the inner tyre in terms of stresses when a real-condition-rolling is experimentally observed. The ad hoc developed tyre model has allowed the identification of the instant grip conditions, of the area of the contact patch and allows the estimation of the instant dissipated power, which is the focus of this paper.

The performance of a PZL 104 Wilga 35A airplane was determined and analyzed in this work. Takeoff and landing distances were determined by means of two different methods: one which utilized a Global Navigation Satellite System/Inertial Navigation System (GNSS/INS) sensor and another in which airplane ground speed was measured with the use of an optical non-contact sensor. Based on the airfield measurements, takeoff and landing distances as well as rolling resistance coefficients were determined for the used airplane on a grassy runway at the Radawiec airfield, located near Lublin, southeast Poland. The study was part of the "GARFIELD" project that is expected to deliver an online information system on grassy airfield conditions. It was concluded that both sensors were suitable for the aimed research. The results obtained in this study showed the effects of high grass upon the takeoff and landing performances of the test airplane. Also, the two methods were compared against each other, and the final results were compared to calculations of ground distances by means of the chosen analytical models.

This study investigates the rolling and drag resistance parameters and bicycle and cargo masses of typical urban cyclists. These factors are important for modelling of cyclist speed, power and energy expenditure, with applications including exercise performance, health and safety assessments and transportation network analysis. However, representative values for diverse urban travellers have not been established. Resistance parameters were measured utilizing a field coast-down test for 557 intercepted cyclists in Vancouver, Canada. Masses were also measured, along with other bicycle attributes such as tire pressure and size. The average (standard deviation) of coefficient of rolling resistance, effective frontal area, bicycle plus cargo mass, and bicycle-only mass were 0.0077 (0.0036), 0.559 (0.170) m2, 18.3 (4.1) kg, and 13.7 (3.3) kg, respectively. The range of measured values is wider and higher than suggested in existing literature, which focusses on sport cyclists. Significant correlations are identified between resistance parameters and rider and bicycle attributes, indicating higher resistance parameters for less sport-oriented cyclists. The findings of this study are important for appropriately characterising the full range of urban cyclists, including commuters and casual riders.

PURPOSE: Although the impact of road pavement surface condition on rolling resistance has been included in the life cycle assessment (LCA) framework of several studies in the last years, there is still a high level of uncertainty concerning the methodological assumptions and the parameters that can affect the results. In order to adopt pavement carbon footprint/LCA as a decision-making tool, it is necessary to explore the impact of the chosen methods and assumptions on the LCA results. METHODS: This paper provides a review of the main models describing the impact of the pavement surface properties on vehicle fuel consumption and analyses the influence of the methodological assumptions related to the rolling resistance on the LCA results. It compares the CO2 emissions, calculated with two different rolling resistance models existing in literature, and performs a sensitivity test on some specific input variables (pavement deterioration rate, traffic growth, and emission factors/fuel efficiency improvement). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The model used to calculate the impact of the pavement surface condition on fuel consumption significantly affects the LCA results. The pavement deterioration rate influences the calculation in both models, while traffic growth and fuel efficiency improvement have a limited impact on the vehicle CO2 emissions resulting from the pavement condition contribution to rolling resistance. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Existing models linking pavement condition to rolling resistance and hence vehicle emissions are not broadly applicable to the use phase of road pavement LCA and further research is necessary before a widely-used methodology can be defined. The methods of modelling and the methodological assumptions need to be transparent in the analysis of the impact of the pavement surface condition on fuel consumption, in order to be interpreted by decision makers and implemented in an LCA framework. This will be necessary before product category rules (PCR) for pavement LCA can be extended to include the use phase.

This investigation sets out to assess the effect of five different models of mountain bike tyre on rolling performance over hard-pack mud. Independent characteristics included total weight, volume, tread surface area and tread depth. One male cyclist performed multiple (30) trials of a deceleration field test to assess reliability. Further tests performed on a separate occasion included multiple (15) trials of the deceleration test and six fixed power output hill climb tests for each tyre. The deceleration test proved to be reliable as a means of assessing rolling performance via differences in initial and final speed (coefficient of variation (CV) = 4.52%). Overall differences between tyre performance for both deceleration test (P = 0.014) and hill climb (P = 0.032) were found, enabling significant (P < 0.0001 and P = 0.049) models to be generated, allowing tyre performance prediction based on tyre characteristics. The ideal tyre for rolling and climbing performance on hard-pack surfaces would be to decrease tyre weight by way of reductions in tread surface area and tread depth while keeping volume high.

The gross mechanical efficiency of the manual wheelchair propulsion movement is particularly low compared to other movements. The energy losses in the manual wheelchair propulsion movement are partly due to energy losses associated with the wheelchair, and especially to the rolling resistance of the wheels. The distribution of mass between the front rear wheels and the caster wheels has a significant impact on the rolling resistance. The study of the caster wheels cannot therefore be neglected due to their involvement in rolling resistance. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the power dissipated due to rolling resistance by different caster wheels, at different speeds and under different loadings on various terrains. Four caster wheels of different shapes, diameters, and materials were tested on two surfaces representative of indoor sports surfaces at four different speeds and under four loadings. The results showed a minimal dissipated power of 0.4±0.2W for the skate caster, on the parquet, at 0.5 m/s and under a loading of 50 N. The maximal mean power dissipated was 43.3±27.6W still for the skate caster, but on the Taraflex, at 1.5 m/s and under loading of 200 N. The power dissipated on the parquet was lower than the one on the Taraflex. The Spherical and Omniwheel caster wheels dissipated less power than the two other casters. This study showed that caster wheels cannot be neglected in the assessment of gross mechanical efficiency, particularly in light of the power dissipated by athletes during propulsion.


Highlights the importance of choosing the right front casters depending on the conditions of use of the manual wheelchair.First study to evaluate power dissipation due to rolling resistance in front casters during wheelchair propulsion.Shows that a Taraflex type floor is not suitable for wheelchair sports performance and injury prevention purposes and lower musculoskeletal constraints with equivalent performance.

In wheelchair sports, there is an increasing need to monitor mechanical power in the field. When rolling resistance is known, inertial measurement units (IMUs) can be used to determine mechanical power. However, upper body (i.e., trunk) motion affects the mass distribution between the small front and large rear wheels, thus affecting rolling resistance. Therefore, drag tests - which are commonly used to estimate rolling resistance - may not be valid. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of trunk motion on mechanical power estimates in hand-rim wheelchair propulsion by comparing instantaneous resistance-based power loss with drag test-based power loss. Experiments were performed with no, moderate and full trunk motion during wheelchair propulsion. During these experiments, power loss was determined based on 1) the instantaneous rolling resistance and 2) based on the rolling resistance determined from drag tests (thus neglecting the effects of trunk motion). Results showed that power loss values of the two methods were similar when no trunk motion was present (mean difference [MD] of 0.6 ± 1.6 %). However, drag test-based power loss was underestimated up to -3.3 ± 2.3 % MD when the extent of trunk motion increased (r = 0.85). To conclude, during wheelchair propulsion with active trunk motion, neglecting the effects of trunk motion leads to an underestimated mechanical power of 1 to 6 % when it is estimated with drag test values. Depending on the required accuracy and the amount of trunk motion in the target group, the influence of trunk motion on power estimates should be corrected for.

A nylon-like polyester tire cord, which combined the characteristics of nylon and polyester tire cords, was designed as the carcass reinforcement material used to meet the increasing demands of the tire industry for performance and impact on the environment. Tires' carcass construction plays a crucial role in affecting handling performance and ride comfort. Small changes in the carcass component can lead to significant improvements in the total tire/vehicle performance. This study evaluated the performance of nylon-like polyester and nylon 6 motorcycle tires. The results showed that the nylon-like polyester tire passed all indoor tests, and post-cure inflation (PCI) could be eliminated, resulting in energy and cost savings. The rolling resistance coefficient of the nylon-like polyester tire was reduced by 6.8% compared to that of the nylon 6 control tire, which could save fuel and have a positive impact on the environment. Nylon-like polyester tire cord extracted from the experimental tire possessed a higher modulus compared to that of nylon 6 tire cord, which could lead to better handling and ride comfort performance. Morphological pictures showed that both nylon-like polyester and nylon 6 cords extracted from tires had a good rubber coverage and comparable adhesion properties.

PURPOSE: To characterize the relationship among rolling resistance (RR), preferred speed, and propulsion mechanics. METHODS: N = 11 non-disabled individuals (mean (SD)); Age 24 years (2), BMI 23.8 kg/m2 (4.3) completed a submaximal graded wheelchair exercise test (GXTsubmax, fixed speed, terminated at Rating of Perceived Effort (RPE)=8 (0-10 scale)) and a single-blind, within-subject repeated measures wheelchair propulsion experiment (RME). RR at RPE = 10 (estimated maximum workload, Maxestimated) was estimated from the GXTsubmax RPE-RR relationship. RME consisted of N = 19 1-minute trials (self-selected speed) each followed by 2-minutes rest. The trials included N = 16 unique RR between 25-100% of Maxestimated. Averages of all pushes in N = 16 unique 1-minute trials were computed for average RR (N), speed (m/s), peak force (Fpeak (N)), force rate of rise (Fror (N/s)), push frequency (PF (pushes/min)), and push length (PL (deg)). RESULTS: Repeated measures correlation assessed relationships among outcome variables (α = 0.05). RR was associated with decreased speed (r=-0.81, p < 0.001), increased Fpeak (r = 0.92), Fror (r = 0.26), and PL (r = 0.32) (all p > 0.001), and unrelated to PF (r = 0.02, p = 0.848). Increased speed was associated with increased Fror (r = 0.23, p = 0.003) and PF (r = 0.27, p < 0.001) and decreased Fpeak (r=-0.66, p < 0.001) and PL (r=-0.25, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Increasing RR increases Fpeak despite reducing self-selected speed. RR and speed were strongly and moderately related to Fpeak, respectively, but weakly related to other propulsion mechanics. These results suggest that reducing user-system RR may confer dual benefits of improved mobility and decreased upper extremity loading. Further testing among wheelchair users is required. To our knowledge, this is the first study to directly characterize the dose-response relationship between rolling resistance and manual wheelchair propulsion biomechanics. By characterizing the relationship between rolling resistance and propulsion mechanics, more objective and accurate clinical interventions can be assessed/implemented.Our results suggest that reducing the user-wheelchair system rolling resistance should decrease peak forces, which is favorable, as increased peak forces have been linked to upper extremity pain and pathology.Our findings of weak relationships between rolling resistance and push length, push frequency, and force rate of rise, suggest that reductions in rolling resistance may not be the optimal method for "improving" these variables. Propulsion training has been shown to achieve long-term favorable changes in these variables, so an area for future work can be to evaluate if reducing rolling resistance or propulsion training is more effective at "improving" these variables.The strong relationship we observed between rolling resistance and self-selected speed, suggests that user-wheelchair system rolling resistance reductions might encourage increased mobility in the home and community, theoretically improving participation and thus quality of life.

Due to the viscoelasticity of rubber materials, hysteresis loss due to deformation is the main reason for the rolling resistance of high-speed rubber tracks. Since the structure and material of high-speed rubber track assemblies are different from traditional tires and metal tracks, the rolling resistance theory of traditional wheeled and tracked vehicles is not applicable. Therefore, in order to determine the rolling resistance scientifically and accurately, the mechanism research of the rolling resistance of high-speed rubber track assembly is the key to the design of high-speed rubber crawler vehicles. In this paper, the stress-strain characteristics of rubber track under the action of compression, tension, bending, and driving were studied. The strain load spectrum of rubber tracks was established, and the strain cyclic load was extracted by the rainflow method. The temperature model of the rubber track was developed based on its dynamic characteristics. On the basis of energy conservation, the hysteresis loss of rubber is equivalent to the energy consumption of rolling resistance, and the theoretical model of rolling resistance of high-speed rubber track assembly is established. In accordance with the model above, the key influencing factors and changing trends of rolling resistance are analyzed, which provides a theoretical basis for the performance optimization of high-speed rubber track assembly.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to investigate the effect of wheel and tire selections on the propulsion characteristics of a high-strength lightweight manual wheelchair using robotic wheelchair propulsion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four configurations were compared with differing combinations of drive wheel tires and casters, with the baseline reflecting the manufacturer configuration of a solid mag drive wheel and 8"×1" caster. The robotic wheelchair tester propelled the chair using pre-generated straight and curvilinear manoeuvres using repeatable and reliable cyclic torque profiles. Additionally, energy loss of the components was measured using coast-down deceleration tests to approximate the system-level rolling resistance of each configuration. RESULTS: Results indicate a significant decrease in propulsion cost, increased distance travelled and increased manoeuvrability across all configurations, with upgraded casters and tires. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicated that with better casters and drive wheel tires, the performance of high strength lightweight wheelchairs can be improved and better meet the mobility needs of users.Implications for rehabilitationWheel and tire selection can have a demonstrable impact on the propulsion efficiency of manual wheelchairsCoast-down test protocols can be used as a simple and cost-effective means of assessing representative energy losses across various surfacesWheelchair configurations can be optimized with proper knowledge of the main energetic loss contributions and the environments and contexts of use.

This article presents the development process of designing and testing poroelastic pavement based on highly polymer-modified bitumen. Poroelastic wearing course was composed of mineral and rubber aggregate mixed with highly polymer-modified bitumen, in contrast to previous trials, during which polyurethane resins were mainly used as binder, which led to several serious technological problems concerning difficult production, insufficient bonding to the base layer, and unsatisfactory durability. The laboratory testing phase was aimed at finding the proper composition of the poroelastic mixture that would ensure required internal shear strength and proper bonding of the poroelastic layer with the base layer. After selecting several promising poroelastic mixture compositions, field test sections were constructed and tested in terms of noise reduction, rolling resistance and interlayer bonding. Despite the very good acoustic properties of the constructed poroelastic wearing course, it was not possible to solve the problem of its insufficient durability. Still, the second major issue of poroelastic pavements that concerns premature debonding of the poroelastic layer from the base layer was completely solved. Experience gained during the implementation of the described research will be the basis for further attempts to develop a successive poroelastic mixture in the future.

The objective of this study was to assess the effects of small, incremental additions to wheelchair frame mass (0 kg, +2 kg, and +4 kg) on the mechanical propulsion characteristics in both straight and curvilinear maneuvers. A robotic propulsion system was used to propel a manual wheelchair over a smooth tiled surface following rectilinear ("Straight") and curvilinear ("Slalom") trajectories. Three unique loading conditions were tested. Propulsion costs and system rolling resistance estimations were empirically collected using the robotic wheelchair tester. Propulsion cost values were equivalent across all loading conditions over the Slalom trajectory. In the Straight trajectory, adding 2 kg on the axle had equivalent propulsion cost to the unloaded configuration. Adding 4 kg on axle was comparable, but not equivalent, to the unloaded configuration with small (≤4.1%) increases in propulsion cost. This study demonstrates that small (0-4 kg) changes to the frame mass have no meaningful impacts on the propulsion characteristics of the manual wheelchair system. Differences in propulsion cost and rolling resistance were detectable but contextually insignificant.

The effort needed to maneuver a manual wheelchair is a function of the occupied wheelchair's inertia and energy loss. The primary source of energy loss is due to the resistance of the drive wheels and casters on the ground. Specifically, manual wheelchairs have two major sources of frictional energy loss: rolling resistance and scrub torque. The objective of this study was to develop and validate component-level test methods to evaluate the energy loss properties of drive wheels and casters on different surfaces and with different applied loads. Rolling resistance is measured using a weighted coast-down cart and scrub torque is calculated by measuring the force required to rotate a plate that is loaded onto the tire's surface. Each test method was iterated and then applied to a cohort of drive wheels and casters. Both test methods demonstrated acceptable repeatability and the ability to distinguish energy loss parameters between common wheelchair components. The results show that caster and drive wheel energy losses can vary significantly across surfaces and with increased load on the casters. However, the findings also illuminate complex relationships between rolling resistance and scrub torque performance that embody a tradeoff in performance as applied to mobility during everyday life.

The hysteresis of rubber materials due to deformation and viscoelasticity is the main reason for the heat build-up (HBU) and rolling resistance (RR) of the rolling tire. It is important to realize the high precision prediction of HBU and RR of tire for the optimal design of high-performance fuel-saving tire. In this work, a thermo-mechanical coupling method based on Endurica and Abaqus co-simulation was used to predict the steady-state temperature distribution and RR of three finite element models (Lagrangian-Eulerian model, Lagrangian model, and Plane Strain model) of the solid tires under different loads and rotating speeds. The simulation results were compared with the experimental results. The Kraus self-heating model was utilized in the thermo-mechanical coupling method, which realized the quantitative relationship between the dynamic loss modulus of rubber and the loading conditions (temperature, strain, and strain rate). Special attention was paid to the determination of the material parameters in the Kraus self-heating model. The comparison between simulation results and experimental results shows that the Lagrangian model had the highest prediction accuracy, and the average prediction errors of the steady-state surface temperature and RR under three loading conditions were 3.4% and 7.9%, respectively. The Lagrangian-Eulerian model came in the second with average errors of 9.7% and 11.1%, respectively. The Plane Strain model had the worst prediction accuracy, with the average errors of 21.4% and 44.6%, respectively. In terms of the simulation time, the Plane Strain model had the lowest cost, and the average calculation time was 1143 s. The Lagrangian-Eulerian model took the second place, with an average calculation time of 2621 s. The Lagrangian model had the highest computation cost, with an average time of 5597 s. The comparison between the simulation results and the experimental results verified the effectiveness of the thermo-mechanical coupling analysis method. The methods of three finite element models of the solid tires in this work can provide some reference for the optimization design of elastomeric components (Lagrangian model), pneumatic tires (Lagrangian-Eulerian model), and non-pneumatic tires (Plane Strain model).

Rolling resistance is one of the most important properties of a tire which is highly dependent on the viscoelastic properties of its rubber compounds. There are a lot of ways to reduce this parameter both in construction improvement of the tire and changing in rubber compound formulation especially in tire tread formulation. Rubber scientists have been trying to introduce new processing aid agents beyond the traditional tire components for reducing the rolling resistance. In this study, a unique structure of silica-supported calix[4]arene (SS-CSC[4]A) has been synthesized and applied as a processing aid agent in tire tread formulation. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1HNMR and 13CNMR), 29Si CP/MAS spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis, and acid-base titration were used to characterize its structure. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) use to investigate the effect of prepared material on qualification of filler dispersion in the rubber matrix. The viscoelastic properties of the prepared rubber compound were measured by Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (DMTA) which showed the great decrease in rolling resistance of rubber compound based on SS-CSC[4]A as a processing aid agent. The mechanical and rheological properties of obtained tread rubber compound measured by tensometer and MDR rheometer showed no sensible changes in these properties.

INTRODUCTION: Manual wheelchair propulsion is associated with upper limb pain and injury, and clinical guidelines recommend minimizing propulsive force to lower health risks. One of the strategies to reduce propulsive force is by minimizing rolling resistance (RR). Product testing studies suggest that RR of casters is affected by wear and tear which could have implications on the health risk of wheelchair users. The study will investigate the relationship between caster RR and environmental exposure using standard testing protocols. METHODS: RR of ten casters representing a range of diameters for different models of wheelchairs were measured before and after environmental exposure that includes corrosion, shock and abrasion simulating two years of community use. RESULTS: Four casters exhibited failures during durability testing, one catastrophically. Increases to RR after corrosion, shock and abrasion exposure were statistically significant using mixed-effects modeling, and four casters had increased RR greater than 20%. CONCLUSIONS: Many of the casters evaluated exhibited increased RR forces and failure after environmental exposure. Improved caster design and use of corrosion resistant materials may reduce these failures. In addition, modification of the provision process could include replacement casters to reduce failures and avoid breakdowns that leave manual wheelchair users stranded or injured.

The aim of this study was to compare the aerodynamics of able-bodied and amputee cyclists by computational fluid dynamics. The cyclists' geometry was obtained by a 3D scanner. Three CAD models were created as able-bodied, transtibial (Tt), and transradial (Tr) amputees. Numerical simulations were conducted up to 13 m/s with increments of 1 m/s to assess drag force. The drag ranged between 0.36 and 39.25 N for the able-bodied model, 0.36-43.78 for the Tr model and 0.37-41.39 N for the Tt model. The pressure drag ranged between 0.20 and 22.94 N for the normal model, 0.21-28.61 for the Tr model and 0.23-28.02 N for the Tt model. The viscous drag ranged between 0.16 and 15.31 N for the normal model, 0.15-15.17 for the Tr model and 0.14-13.38 N for the Tt model. The rolling resistance (RR) was higher on the able-bodied (2.23 N), followed by the Tr (2.20 N) and Tt (2.17 N) models. As a conclusion, the able-bodied cyclist showed less drag, followed by the Tt and Tr models, respectively. The RR presented higher values in the able-bodied, followed by the Tr and Tt models.
