Malus sieversii, commonly known as wild apples, represents a Tertiary relict plant species and serves as the progenitor of globally cultivated apple varieties. Unfortunately, wild apple populations are facing significant degradation in localized areas due to a myriad of factors. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the nutrient status and spatiotemporal variations of M. sieversii, green leaves were collected in May and July, and the fallen leaves were collected in October. The concentrations of leaf nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) were measured, and the stoichiometric ratios as well as nutrient resorption efficiencies were calculated. The study also explored the relative contributions of soil, topographic, and biotic factors to the variation in nutrient traits. The results indicate that as the growing period progressed, the concentrations of N and P in the leaves significantly decreased (P < 0.05), and the concentration of K in October was significantly lower than in May and July. Throughout plant growth, leaf N-P and N-K exhibited hyperallometric relationships, while P-K showed an isometric relationship. Resorption efficiency followed the order of N < P < K (P < 0.05), with all three ratios being less than 1; this indicates that the order of nutrient limitation is K > P > N. The resorption efficiencies were mainly regulated by nutrient concentrations in fallen leaves. A robust spatial dependence was observed in leaf nutrient concentrations during all periods (70.1-97.9% for structural variation), highlighting that structural variation, rather than random factors, dominated the spatial variation. Nutrient resorption efficiencies (NRE, PRE, and KRE) displayed moderate structural variation (30.2-66.8%). The spatial patterns of nutrient traits varied across growth periods, indicating they are influenced by multifactorial elements (in which, soil property showed the highest influence). In conclusion, wild apples manifested differentiated spatiotemporal variability and influencing factors across various leaf nutrient traits. These results provide crucial insights into the spatiotemporal patterns and influencing factors of leaf nutrient traits of M. sieversii at the permanent plot scale for the first time. This work is of great significance for the ecosystem restoration and sustainable management of degrading wild fruit forests.

Seasonal differences in insect pigmentation are attributed to the influence of ambient temperature on pigmentation development. This thermal plasticity is adaptive and heritable, and thereby capable of evolving. However, the specific genes contributing to the variation in plasticity that can drive its evolution remain largely unknown. To address this, we analysed pigmentation and pigmentation plasticity in Drosophila melanogaster. We measured two components of pigmentation in the thorax and abdomen: overall darkness and the proportion of length covered by darker pattern elements (a trident in the thorax and bands in the abdomen) in females from two developmental temperatures (17 or 28°C) and 191 genotypes. Using a GWAS approach to identify the genetic basis of variation in pigmentation and its response to temperature, we identified numerous dispersed QTLs, including some mapping to melanogenesis genes (yellow, ebony, and tan). Remarkably, we observed limited overlap between QTLs for variation within specific temperatures and those influencing thermal plasticity, as well as minimal overlap between plasticity QTLs across pigmentation components and across body parts. For most traits, consistent with selection favouring the retention of plasticity, we found that lower plasticity alleles were often at lower frequencies. The functional analysis of selected candidate QTLs and pigmentation genes largely confirmed their contributions to variation in pigmentation and/or pigmentation plasticity. Overall, our study reveals the existence and underlying basis of extensive and trait-specific genetic variation for pigmentation and pigmentation plasticity, offering a rich reservoir of raw material for natural selection to shape the evolution of these traits independently.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between seasonal variation and distal radius fractures using diagnosis procedure combination data in Japan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The participants were hospitalized patients who underwent surgical treatment for distal radius fracture as the primary injury at hospitals that introduced the diagnosis procedure combination system between April 2011 and March 2016. We obtained a summary table of the month of admission, region of residence, age at admission, and sex of the patients from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and evaluated it by month, region, age group, and sex. RESULTS: The total number of patients for the 5 years from 2011 to 2016 was 105,025. There were 29,224 male and 75,801 female participants, with a female-to-male ratio of 2.6. The mean age was 60.2 (standard deviation, 20.8) years. Distal radius fractures occurred more frequently in the winter, especially among female individuals in eastern Japan. Female participants aged ≥ 50 years tended to have a higher incidence of distal radius fracture in winter. The incidence of distal radius fracture among male participants aged 0-19 years was higher from spring to autumn. CONCLUSION: Surgically treated distal radius fractures occur frequently during the winter months among female individuals in eastern Japan or those aged ≥ 50 years and increase from school age to adolescence, especially in male individuals from spring to autumn. We should be aware of the high incidence of distal radius fractures in winter, especially in regions with snowfall and cold temperatures.

Bacteria are key organisms in energy and nutrient cycles, and predicting the effects of temperature change on bacterial activity is important in assessing global change effects. A changing in situ temperature will affect the temperature adaptation of bacterial growth in lake water, both long term in response to global change, and short term in response to seasonal variations. The rate of adaptation may, however, depend on whether temperature is increasing or decreasing, since bacterial growth and turnover scale with temperature. Temperature adaptation was studied for winter (in situ temperature 2.5 °C) and summer communities (16.5 °C) from a temperate lake in Southern Sweden by exposing them to a temperature treatment gradient between 0 and 30 °C in ~ 5 °C increments. This resulted mainly in a temperature increase for the winter and a decrease for the summer community. Temperature adaptation of bacterial community growth was estimated as leucine incorporation using a temperature Sensitivity Index (SI, log growth at 35 °C/4 °C), where higher values indicate adaptation to higher temperatures. High treatment temperatures resulted in higher SI within days for the winter community, resulting in an expected level of community adaptation within 2 weeks. Adaptation for the summer community was also correlated to treatment temperature, but the rate of adaption was slower. Even after 5 weeks, the bacterial community had not fully adapted to the lowest temperature conditions. Thus, during periods of increasing temperature, the bacterial community will rapidly adapt to function optimally, while decreasing temperature may result in long periods of non-optimal functioning.

OBJECTIVES: Internal and external quality assurance materials often use highly processed matrixes. This can render the materials non-commutable. Monitoring laboratory methods with patient medians helps in identifying and correcting systematic errors that may affect diagnostic accuracy. The aim of the present study was to use HbA1c patient results for monitoring of method performance over time. METHODS: Test HbA1c results from 2010 to 2022 was analyzed (n=722,553) regarding changes over time and seasonal variation. The HbA1c testing was initially performed on a Cobas 501 instrument using immunological detection but in May 2017 the method was replaced by capillary electrophoresis on Capillarys 3 Tera. RESULTS: There was a steady decrease in HbA1c values. From 2011 to 2021 the decrease was for 0.10 percentile 6.6 %, lower quartile 7.9 %, median 10.2 %, mean values 9 %, upper quartile 11.2 %, and 0.90 percentile 9.3 %. No clear shift in HbA1c levels was observed due to the shift in methods. The median HbA1c values per month was approximately 44 mmol/mol (6.2 %, DCCT/NGSP). The only month with a median HbA1c that differed by more than 1 mmol/mol was July with a median value of 42 mmol/mol (6.0 %). CONCLUSIONS: The patient data showed a similar decrease as in the National Diabetes Register which indicates that the method is stable over time without any sudden changes and that the seasonal variation is low. The continuous decrease in HbA1c values over time is most likely to a shift towards earlier detection of patient with diabetes and improved treatment.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has changed our lifestyle by imposing restrictions, such as physical distancing. The effect of COVID-19 prevalence on seasonal variations in glycemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) remains unknown. METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort study evaluated glycemic control in patients with type 2 DM who visited Sugi Cardiovascular Hospital in December 2021. We evaluated the clinical findings of all patients treated regularly between March 1, 2019, and December 31, 2021, including the periods both before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. All the standard treatments were approved. Furthermore, seasonal changes in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels were evaluated using stratified analyses based on age. RESULTS: This study analyzed 86 patients (mean age, 69.6 ± 9.2 years; men, 57). Median HbA1c (National Glycohemoglobin Standardization Program [Union of Clinical Chemistry]) levels in spring (March) were 7.70% (interquartile range (IQR):7.23%-8.30%) [60.6 mmol/mol (IQR:55.4-67.2 mmol/mol)], 7.35% (IQR:6.90%-7.90%) [56.8 mmol/mol (IQR:51.9-62.8 mmol/mol)], and 7.50% (IQR:7.10%-8.00%) [58.5 mmol/mol (IQR:54.1-63.9 mmol/mol)] in 2019, 2020, and 2021, respectively. During these periods, HbA1c levels and body mass index (BMI) revealed significant seasonal variations "high in spring" and "low in autumn." Median HbA1c levels in spring (March) and autumn (September) were 7.86% [61.2 mmol/mol] and 7.48% [57.4 mmol/mol] in 2019 (P < 0.001), 7.50% [57.7 mmol/mol] and 7.17% [54.2 mmol/mol] in 2020 (P < 0.001), and 7.61% [58.3 mmol/mol] and 7.19% [53.8 mmol/mol] in 2021 (P < 0.001). Seasonal variations in HbA1c levels and BMI were maintained over the past 3 years, including the pandemic period. None of the patients in this study developed COVID-19 during the study period. CONCLUSIONS: Seasonal variations in glycemic control in patients with DM were not influenced by lifestyle modifications associated with COVID-19. Maintenance of physical activity is necessary to prevent the development of sarcopenia. Moreover, seasonal variations in glycemic metabolism should be considered an independent factor for DM management. Additional extensive multifacility investigations are necessary to corroborate our findings.

To gain a comprehensive understanding of the seasonal variation in the structure of phytoplankton communities in the Southern Yellow Sea (SYS), two research expeditions were conducted from 12 to 24 in April 2019, and from 12 to 22 in October of 2019. During the spring season, the phytoplankton community within the SYS was primarily comprised of diatoms and dinoflagellates, while in autumn, diatoms and cyanobacteria dominated. Thalassiosira rotula and Paralia sulcata were the dominant species in both seasons. In spring, P. sulcata displayed no obvious correlation with any environmental parameter, while in autumn, it exhibited negative correlations with environmental factors. According to the cluster and multidimensional scaling analyses, the phytoplankton community was stratified into three distinct ecological provinces in the SYS: the Western Yellow Sea, the Yellow Sea basin, and the southern coastal region. The phytoplankton community composition was predominantly affected by seasonal fluctuations in temperature and nutrient levels. Notably, the Yellow Sea basin exhibited the lowest phytoplankton abundance, largely because of the impact of the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass. Furthermore, the presence of cyanobacteria, particularly prevalent in the Yellow Sea basin, may have been facilitated by transport mechanisms associated with the Kuroshio current. Aggregated boosted tree (ABT) and Generalized Additive models (GAM) suggested that temperature, DIN, salinity, and DIP were significant parameters of phytoplankton abundance in SYS. Additionally, the N:P nutrient ratio was a key parameter in governing the structure of phytoplankton communities during both seasons.

In this study, a systematic monitoring campaign of 30 antibiotics belonging to tetracyclines (TCs), macrolides (MLs), fluoroquinolones (FQs) and sulfonamides (SAs) was performed in the Xi'an section of the Wei River during three sampling events (December 2021, June 2022, and September 2022). The total concentrations of antibiotics in water ranged from 297 to 461 ng/L with high detection frequencies ranging from 45% to 100% for the various antibiotics. A marked seasonal variation in concentrations was found with total antibiotic concentrations in winter being 1.5 and 2 times higher than those in the summer and autumn seasons, respectively. The main contaminants in both winter and summer seasons were FQs, but in the autumn SAs were more abundant, suggesting different seasonal sources or more effective runoff for certain antibiotics during periods of rainfall. Combined analysis using redundancy and clustering analysis indicated that the distribution of antibiotics in the Wei River was affected by the confluence with dilution of tributaries and outlet of domestic sewage. Ecological risk assessment based on risk quotient (RQ) showed that most antibiotics in water samples posed insignificant risk to fish and green algae, as well as insignificant to low risk to Daphnia. The water-sediment distribution coefficients of SAs were higher than those of other antibiotics, indicating that particle-bound runoff could be a significant source for this class of antibiotics.

River and reservoir ecosystems have been considered as hot spots for GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions while their specific hydrological and biogeochemical processes affect GHG concentrations; however, few studies integrated river-reservoir systems to identify the dominant drivers of GHG concentrations and flux changes associated with these systems. In the present study, we examined the seasonal variations in GHG concentrations in the surface water of three river-reservoir systems in the Seine Basin. The levels and seasonal variations of GHG concentrations exhibited distinct patterns among reservoirs, upstream, and downstream rivers. The concentrations of CH4 (methane) in the reservoirs were notably higher than those observed in both upstream and downstream rivers and showed higher values in summer and autumn, which contrasted with CO2 (carbon dioxide) concentrations, while N2O (nitrous oxide) concentrations did not show an obvious seasonal pattern. A high mole ratio of CH4/CO2 was found in these reservoirs, with a value of 0.03 and was more than 30 and 10 times higher than that in the upstream and downstream rivers, respectively. The three river-reservoir systems were oversaturated with GHG during the study period, with the average diffusive fluxes (expressed as CO2eq: CO2 equivalent) of 810 ± 1098 mg CO2eq m-2 d-1, 9920 ± 2413 mg CO2eq m-2 d-1, and 7065 ± 2704 mg CO2eq m-2 d-1 in the reservoirs, upstream and downstream rivers, respectively. CO2 and CH4-CO2 were respectively the dominant contributors to GHG diffusive fluxes in river and reservoir sections, while N2O contributed negligibly to GHG diffusive fluxes in the three river-reservoir systems. Our results showed that GHG concentrations and gas transfer coefficient have varying importance in driving GHG diffusive fluxes among different sections of the river-reservoir systems. In addition, our results also show the combined effect of reservoirs and upstream rivers on the water quality variables and hydrological characteristics of downstream rivers, highlighting the future need for additional investigations of GHG processes in the river-reservoir systems.

Most environments exhibit predictable yearly changes, permitting animals to anticipate them. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is a key physiological pathway that enables animals to cope with such changes. Monitoring glucocorticoid (the end products of the HPA axis) levels in wild animals throughout the year can improve our understanding of how this pathway responds to different conditions. For this study, we collected 18 months of data on two species of North American flying squirrels (Glaucomys sabrinus and G. volans) living in a southern Ontario forest where temperature and food availability fluctuate dramatically throughout the year. These squirrels are active year-round, nest communally, and rely on scatter hoarded foods in the winter months. Flying squirrels have extremely high levels of free plasma cortisol relative to other mammals, but it is unknown how these levels are affected by environmental and reproductive factors. For both species, our goals were to (1) validate an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) to measure their fecal glucocorticoid metabolite (FGM) concentrations and (2) assess yearly differences, seasonal changes, and the influence of sex, reproduction, and ambient temperature on FGM concentrations in each species. In the lab, we successfully validated the use of antibody 5α-pregnane-3ß, 11ß, 21-triol-20-one EIA for FGM analysis in both species. In the field, neither sex nor reproductive status (breeding condition or not) were linked to FGM concentrations in either species. FGM concentrations were higher in autumn compared to the spring and summer. There were no other seasonal differences. We discuss possible explanations for the autumn peak in FGM concentrations (increased energy expenditure and social nesting changes), as well as outline possible avenues for future research. Understanding how individuals and populations respond to environmental change is a critical goal in evolutionary ecology, particularly in the context of a rapidly changing Anthropocene.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is an important complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) which is worsened when the diagnosis of T1DM is delayed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presentation patterns, severity, autoantibody status, and seasonal variability of newly diagnosed T1DM patients during the pandemic period of 2 years compared to those in the pre-pandemic period. METHODS: In this single tertiary center retrospective cohort study, newly diagnosed T1DM patients were grouped as pre-pandemic and pandemic period. Age, gender, the month of diagnosis, hemoglobin A1c, venous blood gas parameters, duration of symptoms, glutamic-acid-decarboxylase-antibody (anti-GAD), islet-cell antibody (ICA), and insulin autoantibody levels were recorded. The data obtained were compared between the groups. RESULTS: Number of patients presenting with DKA was significantly higher during the pandemic period (92 [65.7%] vs. 62 [40.8%] patients, p < 0.001). In terms of clinical severity of DKA, pH, and HCO3 levels were lower during the pandemic period (p < 0.001), while the number of patients presenting with severe DKA was significantly higher during the pandemic period (41 [44.6%] vs. 17 [27.4%] patients, p = 0.031). ICA positivity was significantly higher in patients admitted during the pandemic period (47 [36.4%] vs. 21 patients [16.9%], p < 0.001), especially in the second year of the pandemic (p < 0.001). Anti-GAD-ICA co-positivity was significantly higher in patients admitted during the pandemic period and also in second year of the pandemic (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: DKA rates increased in newly diagnosed T1DM cases during the pandemic. Despite the relaxation of bans, the second year of the pandemic also saw increased rates of DKA and severe DKA compared to the pre-pandemic period. The significantly increased ICA positivity in the pandemic may support the effects of COVID-19 on autoimmune T1DM.

BACKGROUND: Pertussis is a highly contagious and dangerous respiratory disease that threatens children's health in many countries, including Vietnam, despite vaccine coverage. From 2015 to 2018, Vietnam experienced an increasing number of pertussis patients. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the trend and examine the seasonal variations of pertussis in North Vietnam. METHODS: Data were collected from medical records of all under-5-year-old inpatients admitted to the National Children's Hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam (VNCH) 2015-2018. A descriptive analysis was performed to describe the distribution of incident cases by year and season. Linear multivariable regression was conducted to investigate the association between the incidence of cases and seasonality adjusted by age and vaccination status. RESULTS: We identified 1063 laboratory-confirmed patients during 2015-2018, including 247 (23.2%) severe patients. The number of pertussis patients admitted to VNCH per 1000 hospitalizations was 3.2 in 2015, compared to 1.9, 3.1, and 2.1 in 2016, 2017, and 2018, respectively. Outbreaks occurred biennially; however, there was no significant difference in the number of severe patients over this period. Most cases occurred in the hot season (509 patients, or nearly half of the study population). With the adjustment of the vaccination rate and average age, the risk of pertussis-associated hospitalization in the mild season and the hot season was 21% (95% CI [0.12; 0.3]) and 15% (95% CI [0.05; 0.25]) higher than that in the warm season, respectively. The rate of hospitalizations was high in the mild season (28.9%) and the warm season (30.8%), nearly twice as much as that in the hot season; nevertheless, the death rate was only striking high in the mild season, about 5-6 times as much as those in the other seasons. CONCLUSION: The pertussis incidence in Northern Vietnam varied between seasons, peaking in the hot season (April-July). However, severe patients and deaths increased in the mild season (December-March). Interventions, for example, communication activities on pertussis and vaccination, are of immense importance in lowering the prevalence of pertussis. In addition, early diagnoses and early warnings performed by health professionals should be encouraged.

PURPOSE: Myelomeningocele is the most severe birth defect compatible with long-term survival. It accounts for 5.7% of neurological surgeries in Nigeria. However, the exact cause of this neural tube defect remains unidentified. This study aims to determine if seasonal variation is a potential environmental contributor. METHOD: This study prospectively recruited 242 children diagnosed with myelomeningocele at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, Nigeria, between January 2010 and December 2022. Our primary outcome was the seasonal occurrence of myelomeningocele, while covariates included gender, birth order, maternal folic acid supplementation (FAS), and parental age. The estimated month of conception was derived from the mother's last menstrual period (LMP), and the occurrence of myelomeningocele across the various seasons in which these babies were conceived was assessed using the Lorenz curve and the Gini coefficient. RESULTS: 242 patients were studied with a male-to-female ratio of 1.26. The majority of cases were lumbosacral (93.4%), and none of the mothers commenced FAS before conception. The highest proportion of cases (39.7%) occurred during the hottest period of the dry season (January-March), while the lowest proportion (15.7%) occurred during the early wet season (April-June). The Gini index of 0.29, and the Gini coefficient derived from 100,000 Monte Carlo simulations of 0.24, indicate a significant variation in the distribution of myelomeningocele cases across different seasons of conception. CONCLUSION: The seasonal occurrence of myelomeningocele with a peak in January-March suggests a potential association with environmental factors including oxidative stress induced by solar radiation.

Perkinsosis has been recognized as one of the major threats to natural and farmed bivalve populations, many of which are of commercial as well as environmental significance. Three Perkinsus species have been identified in China, and the Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) was the most frequently infected species in northern China. Although the occurrence and seasonal variation of Perkinsus spp. have previously been examined, the pathological characteristics of these infections in wild Manila clams and sympatric species in China have seldom been reported. In the present study, the prevalence and intensity of Perkinsus infection in wild populations of Manila clams and 10 sympatric species from three sites were investigated by Ray's fluid thioglycolate medium (RFTM) assay seasonally across a single year. Perkinsus infection was only identified in Manila clams, with a high prevalence (274/284 = 96.48 %) and low intensity (89.8 % with a Mackin value ≤ 2, suggesting generally low-intensity infections) throughout the year. Heavily infected clams were mainly identified in Tianheng in January, which displayed no macroscopic signs of disease. An overview of the whole visceral mass section showed that the trophozoites mostly aggregated in gills and connective tissue of the digestive tract, to a lesser extent in the mantle and foot, and even less frequently in adductor muscle and connective tissues of the gonad. PCR and ITS-5.8S rRNA sequencing of 93 representative RFTM-positive samples revealed a 99.69 to 100 % DNA sequence identity to Perkinsus olseni. Unexpectedly, significantly higher infection intensities were usually identified in January and April when the Condition Index (CI) was relatively high. We propose that factors associated with the anthropogenic harvesting pressure and irregular disturbances should be responsible for the uncommon seasonal infection dynamics of perkinsosis observed in the present study.

BACKGROUND: Most studies infer increasing incidence of proximal humeral fractures (PHF) from the 1950´s until the 1990´s. Recent time trends are less clear. OBJECTIVES: Our primary objective was to identify time trends in the age- and sex-adjusted adult incidence of PHF in Malmö, Sweden, from year 1944 until 2020. Our secondary objectives were to describe the variation in incidence according to age, the monthly distribution, and to compare data from the two most recent decades with earlier. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Malmö has one emergency hospital where acute fractures are treated. We identified PHF in adult patients (≥ 18 years) by reviewing relevant radiology examinations during 17 sample years from year 1944 to 2020. We used jointpoint analyses to estimate time trends. RESULTS: We identified 3 031 PHF during the study period (3 231 161 person years), 73% were sustained by women with mean age of 69 years (mean age in men 59). Joinpoint analyses indicated an increase in the age- and sex-adjusted incidence of PHF from year 1944 (52 per 100 000 person years) until 1977 (120 per 100 000) and thereafter a decrease until 2020 (85 per 100 000). A seasonal variation with more fractures during winter months, was apparent in earlier but not recent decades. CONCLUSIONS: The age- and sex-adjusted incidence of PHF increased in Malmö, Sweden, from the 1940´s until year 1977 and thereafter decreased until 2020. More fractures were seen during winter months in earlier but not recent decades.

Liver and intestinal flukes (LIF) are important groups of foodborne zoonotic trematodes (FZTs) in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. Their complex life cycles require specific freshwater snail species as the obligatory first intermediate hosts. In 2019, we conducted a longitudinal study in Yen Bai and Thanh Hoa provinces in North and Central Vietnam, respectively, to investigate the diversity of LIF and their infection prevalence in relation to snail host abundance and environmental factors. Using a combination of morphological and molecular identification techniques, we identified 10 LIF species infecting 11 snail host species. We observed significant seasonal variation in the mean abundance of several snail host species, with the majority of snails collected during the spring. We also detected seasonal changes in LIF species composition, with the highest species richness reported in the spring. Clonorchis sinensis and Fasciola gigantica, two medically important human liver flukes in Asia, were found only in the spring in Yen Bai. Our study revealed that not all snail host species have the same probability of becoming infected, and we recorded seasonal variations in the prevalence of LIF infection in different snail species in relation to water parameters.

BACKGROUND: The human upper respiratory tract is the first site of contact for inhaled respiratory viruses and elaborates an array of innate immune responses. Seasonal variation in respiratory viral infections and the importance of ambient temperature in modulating immune responses to infections have been well recognized; however, the underlying biological mechanisms remain understudied. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the role of nasal epithelium-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) in innate Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3)-dependent antiviral immunity. METHODS: We evaluated the secretion and composition of nasal epithelial EVs after TLR3 stimulation in human autologous cells and fresh human nasal mucosal surgical specimens. We also explored the antiviral activity and mechanisms of TLR3-stimulated EVs against respiratory viruses as well as the effect of cool ambient temperature on TLR3-dependent antiviral immunity. RESULTS: We found that polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid, aka poly(I:C), exposure induced a swarm-like increase in the secretion of nasal epithelial EVs via the TLR3 signaling. EVs participated in TLR3-dependent antiviral immunity, protecting the host from viral infections through both EV-mediated functional delivery of miR-17 and direct virion neutralization after binding to virus ligands via surface receptors, including LDLR and ICAM-1. These potent antiviral immune defense functions mediated by TLR3-stimulated EVs were impaired by cold exposure via a decrease in total EV secretion as well as diminished microRNA packaging and antiviral binding affinity of individual EV. CONCLUSION: TLR3-dependent nasal epithelial EVs exhibit multiple innate antiviral mechanisms to suppress respiratory viral infections. Furthermore, our study provides a direct quantitative mechanistic explanation for seasonal variation in upper respiratory tract infection prevalence.

This study offers an insightful and detailed examination of microplastic pollution in the Huixian karst wetland's groundwater, providing novel insights into the complex interplay of microplastic characteristics and their seasonal dynamics. We meticulously quantified microplastic concentrations, observing significant seasonal variation with values ranging from 4.9 to 13.4 n·L-1 in the wet season and 0.53-49.4 n·L-1 in the dry season. Our analysis pinpoints human activities and atmospheric deposition as key contributors to this contamination. A critical finding of our research is the pronounced disparity in microplastic levels between open wells and covered artesian wells, highlighting the vulnerability of open wells to higher pollution levels. Through correlation analysis, we unearthed the crucial influence of the karst region's unique hydrogeological characteristics on microplastic migration, distinctively different from non-karst areas. The karst terrain, characterized by its caves and subterranean rivers, facilitates the downward movement of microplastics from surface to groundwater, exacerbating pollution levels. Our investigation identifies agricultural runoff and domestic wastewater as primary pollution sources. These findings not only underscore the urgent need for environmental stewardship in karst regions but also provide a crucial foundation for formulating effective strategies to mitigate microplastic pollution in karst groundwater. The implications of this study extend beyond the Huixian karst wetland, offering a template for addressing microplastic pollution in similar ecosystems globally.

.In this study, we assessed the impact of satellite-based Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Air Temperature (AT) on covid-19. First, we spatio-temporally kriged the LST and applied bias correction. The epidemic shape, timing, and size were compared after and before adjusting for the predictors. Given the non-linear behavior of a pandemic, a semi-parametric regression model was used. In addition, the interaction effect between the predictors and season was assessed. Before adjusting for the predictors, the peak happened at the end of hot season. After adjusting, it was attenuated and slightly moved forward. Moreover, the Attributable Fraction (AF) and Peak to Trough Relative (PTR) were % 23 (95% CI; 15, 32) and 1.62 (95%CI; 1.34, 1.97), respectively. We found that temperature might have changed the seasonal variation of covid-19. However, given the large uncertainty after adjusting for the variables, it was hard to provide conclusive evidence in the region we studied.

Clean air is imperative to the survival of all life forms on the planet. However, recent times have witnessed enormous escalation in urban pollution levels. It is therefore, incumbent upon us to decipher measures to deal with it. In perspective, the present study was carried out to assess PM10 and PM2.5 loading, metallic constituents, gaseous pollutants, source contributions, health impact and noise level of nine-locations, grouped as residential, commercial, and industrial in Lucknow city for 2019-21. Mean concentrations during pre-monsoon for PM10, PM2.5, SO2 and NO2 were: 138.2 ± 35.2, 69.1 ± 13.6, 8.5 ± 3.3 and 32.3 ± 7.4 µg/m3, respectively, whereas post-monsoon concentrations were 143.0 ± 33.3, 74.6 ± 14.5, 12.5 ± 2.1, and 35.5 ± 6.3 µg/m3, respectively. Exceedance percentage of pre-monsoon PM10 over National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) was 38.2% while that for post-monsoon was 43.0%; whereas corresponding values for PM2.5 were 15.2% and 24.3%. Post-monsoon season showed higher particulate loading owing to wintertime inversion and high humidity conditions. Order of elements associated with PM2.5 is Co < Cd < Cr < Ni < V < Be < Mo < Mn < Ti < Cu < Pb < Se < Sr < Li < B < As < Ba < Mg < Al < Zn < Ca < Fe < K < Na and that with PM10 is Co < Cd < Ni < Cr < V < Ti < Be < Mo < Cu < Pb < Se < Sr < Li < B < As < Mn < Ba < Mg < Al < Fe < Zn < K < Na < Ca. WHO AIRQ + ascertained 1654, 144 and 1100 attributable cases per 0.1 million of population to PM10 exposure in 2019-21. Source apportionment was carried out using USEPA-PMF and resolved 6 sources with highest percent contributions including road dust re-entrainment, biomass burning and vehicular emission. It is observed that residents of Lucknow city regularly face exposure to particulate pollutants and associated constituents making it imperative to develop pollution abetment strategies.
