RESUMO

Advancements in flexible electronic technology, especially the progress in foldable displays and under-display cameras (UDC), have created an urgent demand for high-performance colorless polyimide (CPI). However, current CPIs lack sufficient heat resistance for substrate applications. In this work, four kinds of rigid spirobifluorene diamines are designed, and the corresponding polyimides are prepared by their condensation with 5,5'-(perfluoropropane-2,2-diyl) bis(isobenzofuran-1,3-dione) (6FDA) or 9,9-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) fluorene dianhydride (BPAF). The rigid and conjugated spirobifluorene units endow the polyimides with higher glass transition temperature (Tg) ranging from 356 to 468 °C. Their optical properties are regulated by small side groups and spirobifluorene structure with a periodically twisted molecular conformation. Consequently, a series of CPIs with an average transmittance ranging from 75% to 88% and a yellowness index (YI) as low as 2.48 are obtained. Among these, 27SPFTFA-BPAF presents excellent comprehensive performance, with a Tg of 422 °C, a 5 wt.% loss temperature (Td5) of 562 °C, a YI of 3.53, and a tensile strength (δmax) of 140 MPa, respectively. The mechanism underlying the structure-property relationship is investigated by experimental comparison and theoretical calculation, and the proposed method provides a pathway for designing highly rigid conjugated CPIs with excellent thermal stability and transparency for photoelectric engineering.

RESUMO

The rising energy demand driven by human activity has posed pressing challenges in embracing renewable energy, necessitating advances in energy storage technologies to maximize their utilization efficiency. Recent studies in aqueous organic redox flow batteries have focused primarily on the development of organic negative electrolytes, while the progress in organic positive electrolytes remains constrained by limitations in their redox potentials and effective electron concentrations. Herein, we report a spatially twisted chlorinated spirobifluorene ammonium salts (CSFAs), created through an unexpected green chlorination-protection pathway during the initial cycling in the flow battery cell, utilizing chloride ions from counterions in aqueous solution. The chlorinated, nonplanar spiral structure of CSFAs possesses a one-step four-electron transfer electrochemical property and offers exceptional resistance to nucleophilic attacks, exhibiting an unprecedented redox potential as high as 1.05 V (vs. SHE). A full redox flow battery based on CSFA-Cl (chloride ions as the counter ions) with 1.4 M electron concentration achieved an average coulombic efficiency exceeding 99.4 % and a capacity utilization reaching 95 % of the four-electron capacity for a stable cycling over 250 cycles (~22 days). The present work exemplifies the use of side reactions to develop new redox species, which can be extended to create more structurally versatile energy storage materials.

RESUMO

Pure aromatic hydrocarbon materials (PHCs) represent a new generation of host materials for phosphorescent OLEDs (PhOLEDs), free of heteroatoms. They reduce the molecular complexity, can be easily synthesized and are an important direction towards robust devices. As heteroatoms can be involved in bonds dissociations in operating OLEDs through exciton induced degradation processes, developing novel PHCs appear particularly relevant for the future of this technology. In the present work, we report a series of extended PHCs constructed by the assembly of three spirobifluorene fragments. The resulting positional isomers present a high triplet energy level, a wide HOMO/LUMO difference and improved thermal and morphological properties compared to previously reported PHCs. These characteristics are beneficial for the next generation of host materials for PhOLEDs and provide relevant design guidelines. When used as a host in blue-emitting PhOLEDs, which are still the weakest link of the field, a very high EQE of 24 % and low threshold voltage of 3.56 V were obtained with a low-efficiency roll-off. This high performance strengthens the position of PHC strategy as an efficient alternative for OLED technology and opens the way to a more simple electronic.

RESUMO

Two fluorescent and non-toxic spirobifluorene molecules bearing either positive (Spiro-NMe3) or negative (Spiro-SO3) charged moieties attached to the same aromatic structure have been investigated as binders for DNA. The novel Spiro-NMe3 containing four alkylammonium substituents interacts with G-quadruplex (G4) DNA structures and shows preference for G4s over duplex by means of FRET melting and fluorescence experiments. The interaction is governed by the charged substituents of the ligands as deduced from the lower binding of the sulfonate analogue (Spiro-SO3). On the contrary, Spiro-SO3 exhibits higher binding affinity to duplex DNA structure than to G4. Both molecules show a moderate quenching of the fluorescence upon DNA binding. The confocal microscopy evaluation shows the internalization of both molecules in HeLa cells and their lysosomal accumulation.

RESUMO

Using a tailored high triplet energy hole transport layer (HTL) is a suitable way to improve the efficiency and extend the lifetime of organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs), which can use all molecular excitons of singlets and triplets. In this study, dibenzofuran (DBF)-end-capped and spirobifluorene (SBF) core-based HTLs referred as TDBFSBF1 and TDBFSBF2 were effectively developed. TDBFSBF1 exhibited a high glass transition temperature of 178 °C and triplet energy of 2.5 eV. Moreover, a high external quantum efficiency of 22.0 %, long operational lifetime at 50 % of the initial luminance of 89,000 h, and low driving voltage at 1000 cd m-2 of 2.95 V were achieved in green phosphorescent OLEDs using TDBFSBF1. Further, a high-hole mobility µh value of 1.9×10-3  cm2 V-1 s-1 was recorded in TDBFSBF2. A multiscale simulation successfully reproduced the experimental µh values and indicated that the reorganization energy was the primary factor in determining the mobility differences among these SBF core based HTLs.

RESUMO

Organic amines are important compounds present in a wide variety of products, which makes the development of new systems for their detection an interesting field of study. New organometallic complexes of group 9 [MCp*X(2'-R-2-py-SBF)] (M = Ir, Rh; R = H, X = Cl (6), R = H, X = OAc (7), R = CHO, X = Cl (8)), and [IrCp*Cl(2', 7-diCHO-2-py-SBF)] (9) (Cp* pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, SBF = 9,9'-spirobifluorene) bearing bidentate C-N ligands based on 9,9'-spirobifluorene were obtained and characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis when possible. The formation of a Schiff base to give complexes with the formula [MCp*Cl(2'-CH=NR-2-py-SBF)] (M = Ir, Rh; R = alkyl or aryl (10-12)), through condensation of an amine, and the aldehyde group present in these new complexes was studied leading to a selective reactivity depending on the nature of the amine and the metal center. While the iridium complexes only react with aromatic amines, the rhodium derivative requires heat for those but can react at room temperature with aliphatic amines.

RESUMO

Reasonable design of electrode materials with specific morphology and structure can efficiently improve the metal ions storage and transmission properties of metal ion batteries. Here the preparation of spirobifluorene-based three-dimensional carbiyne nanosphere (SBFCY-NS) that is composed of spirobifluorene (SBF) and alkyne bonds is reported. Benefiting from the rigid spatial structure of SBF, numerous precursors are coupled through the connection of acetylene bonds, extending to form solid nanospheres. Abundant storage spaces and convenient multi-directional transmission paths for metal ions are available inside the three-dimensional (3D) carbiyne structure. Thus, SBFCY-NS is applied as efficient anode for lithium-ion battery and sodium-ion battery. The good stability of SBFCY-NS-based electrode and its improved Coulombic efficiency can be attributed to the special morphology of nanospheres, which can easily form thin and stable solid electrolyte interface film on the surface. Those results further promote the preparation of spherical carbon-based materials with abundant pores that can be applied in the field of electrodes.

RESUMO

Herein disclosed is the first example of diarylation/annulation of benzoic acids via an iridium catalyst system. This protocol provides a step-economic and highly efficient pathway to 1-aryl, 1,3-diaryl, 1,7-diaryl and 1,3,7-triaryl spirobifluorenes from readily available starting materials. The applications of multi-aryl spirobifluorenes as pure hydrocarbon (PHC) hosts for red, green, and blue (RGB) phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) were explored. Due to high triplet energies, 1,3-diaryl spirobifluorenes exhibit the potential as the host material of blue PhOLEDs. 1,7-Diaryl spirobifluorene can serve as the host of green PhOLEDs. 1,3,7-Triaryl spirobifluorene is a high-performance host for red PhOLEDs, which exhibits a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) up to 27.3 %. This work not only exemplifies the great potential of multi-aryl spirobifluorenes as PHC hosts, but also offers a new approach for the synthesis of these PHC hosts.

RESUMO

The synthesis and preliminary evaluation as donor material for organic photovoltaics of the poly(diketopyrrolopyrrole-spirobifluorene) (PDPPSBF) is reported herein. Prepared via homogeneous and heterogeneous direct (hetero)arylation polymerization (DHAP), through the use of different catalytic systems, conjugated polymers with comparable molecular weights were obtained. The polymers exhibited strong optical absorption out to 700 nm as thin-films and had appropriate electronic energy levels for use as a donor with PC70BM. Bulk heterojunction solar cells were fabricated giving power conversion efficiencies above 4%. These results reveal the potential of such polymers prepared in only three steps from affordable and commercially available starting materials.

RESUMO

Two new hole transporting materials, 2,7-bis(9,9-diphenylacridin-10(9H)-yl)-9,9' spirobi[fluorene] (SP1) and 2,7-di(10H-phenothiazin-10-yl)-9,9'-spirobi[fluorene] (SP2), were designed and synthesized by using the Buchwald-Hartwig coupling reaction with a high yield percentage of over 84%. Both of the materials exhibited high glass transition temperatures of over 150 °C. In order to understand the device performances, we have fabricated green phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) with SP1 and SP2 as hole transporting materials. Both of the materials revealed improved device properties, in particular, the SP2-based device showed excellent power (34.47 lm/W) and current (38.41 cd/A) efficiencies when compare with the 4,4'-bis(N-phenyl-1-naphthylamino)biphenyl (NPB)-based reference device (30.33 lm/W and 32.83 cd/A). The external quantum efficiency (EQE) of SP2 was 13.43%, which was higher than SP1 (13.27%) and the reference material (11.45%) with a similar device structure. The SP2 hole transporting material provides an effective charge transporting path from anode to emission layer, which is explained by the device efficiencies.

RESUMO

The present works report the first structure-property relationship study of a key class of organic semiconductors, that is, the four spirobifluorene positional isomers possessing a para-, meta- or ortho-linkage. The remarkable and surprising impact of the ring bridging and of the linkages on the electronic properties of the regioisomers has been particularly highlighted and rationalised. The impact of the ring bridging on the photophysical properties has been stressed with notably the different influence of the linkages and the bridge on the singlet and triplet excited states. The first member of a new family of spirobifluorenes substituted in the 1-position, which presents better performance in blue phosphorescent OLEDs than those of its regioisomers, is reported. These features highlight not only the great potential of 1-substituted spirobifluorenes, but also the remarkable impact of regioisomerism on electronic properties.

RESUMO

Two new hole transporting materials, named HTM 1A and HTM 1B, were designed and synthesized in significant yields using the well-known Buchwald Hartwig and Suzuki cross- coupling reactions. Both materials showed higher decomposition temperatures (over 450 °C) at 5% weight reduction and HTM 1B exhibited a higher glass transition temperature of 180 °C. Red phosphorescence-based OLED devices were fabricated to analyze the device performances compared to Spiro-NPB and NPB as reference hole transporting materials. Devices consist of hole transporting material as HTM 1B showed better maximum current and power efficiencies of 16.16 cd/A and 11.17 lm/W, at the same time it revealed an improved external quantum efficiency of 13.64%. This efficiency is considerably higher than that of Spiro-NPB and NPB-based reference devices.

RESUMO

Two new 9,9'-spirobifluorene-based bis(4-pyridines) were synthesised in enantiopure and one also in racemic form. These ligands act as concave templates and form metallosupramolecular [(dppp)2M2L2] rhombi with cis-protected [(dppp)Pd](2+) and [(dppp)Pt](2+) ions. The self-assembly process of the racemic ligand preferably occurs in a narcissistic self-recognising manner. Hence, a mixture of all three possible stereoisomers [(dppp)2M2{(R)-L}2](OTf)4, [(dppp)2M2{(S)-L}2](OTf)4, and [(dppp)2M2{(R)-L}{(S)-L}](OTf)4 was obtained in an approximate 1.5:1.5:1 ratio which corresponds to an amplification of the homochiral assemblies by a factor of approximately three as evidenced by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The racemic homochiral assemblies could also be characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

RESUMO

Metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) show significant advancements in power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, the open-circuit voltage (VOC) of PSCs is limited by interfacial factors such as defect-induced recombination, energy band mismatch, and non-intimate interface contact. Here, an exciplex interface is first developed based on the strategically designed and synthesized two spirobifluorene phosphonate molecules to mitigate VOC loss in PSCs. The exciplex interface constructed by the intimate contact between the multi-functional molecules and hole transport layer takes the roles to promote the hole extraction by donor-acceptor interaction, passivate coordination-unsaturated Pb2+ defects by equipped phosphonate groups, and optimize the energy level alignment. As a result, a record VOC of 1.26 V with a perovskite bandgap of 1.61 eV is achieved, representing over 95% of theoretical limit. This advancement leads to an increase in PCE from 21.29% to 24.12% and improved stability. The exciplex interface paves the way for addressing the long-standing challenge of VOC loss and promotes the wider application of PSCs.

RESUMO

A novel 9,9'-spirobifluorene derivative bearing thermally cross-linkable vinyl groups (V1382) was developed as a hole-transporting material for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). After thermal cross-linking, a smooth and solvent-resistant three-dimensional (3D) polymeric network is formed such that orthogonal solvents are no longer needed to process subsequent layers. Copolymerizing V1382 with 4,4'-thiobisbenzenethiol (dithiol) lowers the cross-linking temperature to 103 °C via the facile thiol-ene "click" reaction. The effectiveness of the cross-linked V1382/dithiol was demonstrated both as a hole-transporting material in p-i-n and as an interlayer between the perovskite and the hole-transporting layer in n-i-p PSC devices. Both devices exhibit better power conversion efficiencies and operational stability than devices using conventional PTAA or Spiro-OMeTAD hole-transporting materials.

RESUMO

Bulky conjugated molecules with high stability are the prerequisite for the overall improvement of performance in wide-bandgap semiconductors. Herein, a chiral difluorenol, 2,2'-(9,9'-spirobi[fluorene]-2,2'-diyl)bis(9-(4-(octyloxy)phenyl)-9H-fluoren-9-ol) (DOHSBF), is set as a desirable model to reveal the stereoisomeric effects of wide-bandgap molecules toward controlling photophysical behavior and improving thermal and optical stability. Three diastereomers are obtained and elucidated by NMR spectra. Interestingly, the effect of modifying the stereo-centers is not observed on optical properties in solutions, pristine films, or post-treated film states. All three diastereomers as well as the mixture exhibit excellent spectral stability without undesirable green emission. Therefore, this stereoisomer-independent blue-emitting difluorenol will be a promising candidate for next-generation wide-bandgap semiconductors that would have extensive application in organic photonics.

RESUMO

Two spirobifluorene-based two-photon fluorescent probes for the detection of hydrazine, namely SPF-MN and SPF- PA, have been designed and synthesized. Along with the addition of hydrazine to a solution of SPF-MN, both a colorimetric change from yellow to colorless and a fluorescence change from yellow to blue (Under 365 nm UV light) can be observed by ''naked-eye''. Probe SPF- PA displayed response toward hydrazine with fluorescence enhancement. The detection limits are 6.9 µM for SPF- PA and 0.29 µM for SPF-MN, respectively. Moreover, SPF-MN and SPF- PA can be used as two-photon fluorescent probes for hydrazine with large two-photon absorption cross-sections and used for the imaging of hydrazine in living cells. Specially, SPF-PA can located at the surface of the cells, and it is the first fluorescent probe which possesses the capability of sensing intercellular hydrazine. Besides, SPF-MN is the first colorimetric two-photon fluorescent probe for meeting the criteria of both hydrazine bioimaging and visual detection of hydrazine in solution.

RESUMO

Electrochromic (EC)/electrofluorochromic (EFC) bifunctional materials are receiving great attention because of their promising applications in optoelectronic devices. However, the development of ideal EC/EFC bifunctional materials is still a great challenge because of the poor integration of EC/EFC performances (optical contrast, response speed, and switching stability). Herein, we reported two novel diphenylamine-based mixed valence (MV) polyamides (S-HPA and P-HPA) with spirobifluorene (2,7-positions) and pyrene (1,6-positions) as bridged fluorescence units, respectively, showing impressive cyclability and fluorescence contrast with rapid switching. Through the formation of an effective electronic coupling between the two nitrogen centers using spirobifluorene/pyrene bridges, we demonstrated that different bridges have significant effects on the thermal and electrooptical characteristics of polyamides. In addition to lower fluorescence quantum yield and glass transition temperature, the S-HPA exhibited superior cyclability (contrast change <3.4%/14% over 500/300 cycles for EC/EFC switching), higher color/fluorescence contrast (64%/304%), and faster switching time (<2.6 s), mainly owing to the shorter conjugated length and more twisted configuration of the spirobifluorene bridge. The design principle of MV polymers with fluorophore bridges proposed here will be a promising way to realize high-performance EC/EFC devices and will also provide new insights into their future development and applications.

RESUMO

Owing to their high surface area and superior adsorption properties, spirobifluorene polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs), namely PIM-SBF-Me (methyl) and PIM-SBF-tBu (tert-butyl), were used for the first time, to our knowledge, for the removal of methylene blue (MB) dye from wastewater. Spirobifluorene PIMs are known to have large surface area (can be up to 1100 m2 g-1) and have been previously used mainly for gas storage applications. Dispersion of the polymers in aqueous solution was challenging owing to their extreme hydrophobic nature leading to poor adsorption efficiency of MB. For this reason, cationic (cetyl-pyridinium chloride), anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate; SDS) and non-ionic (Brij-35) surfactants were used and tested with the aim of enhancing the dispersion of the hydrophobic polymers in water and hence improving the adsorption efficiencies of the polymers. The effect of surfactant type and concentration were investigated. All surfactants offered a homogeneous dispersion of the polymers in the aqueous dye solution; however, the highest adsorption efficiency was obtained using an anionic surfactant (SDS) and this seems owing to the predominance of electrostatic interaction between its molecules and the positively charges dye molecules. Furthermore, the effect of polymer dosage and initial dye concentration on MB adsorption were also considered. The kinetic data for both polymers were well described by a pseudo-second-order model, while the Langmuir model better simulated the adsorption process of MB dye on PIM-SBF-Me and the Freundlich model was more suitable for PIM-SBF-tBu. Moreover, the maximum adsorption capacities recorded were 84.0 and 101.0 mg g-1 for PIM-SBF-Me and PIM-SBF-tBu, respectively. Reusability of both polymers was tested by performing three adsorption cycles and the results substantiate that both polymers can be effectively re-used with insignificant loss of their adsorption efficiency (%AE). These preliminary results suggested that incorporation of a surfactant to enhance the dispersion of hydrophobic polymers and adsorption of organic contaminants from wastewater is a simple and cost-effective approach that can be adapted for many other environmental applications.

RESUMO

We report herein a detailed structure-properties relationship study of the first examples of electron-rich 4-substituted spirobifluorenes for organic electronic applications, namely, 4-phenyl-N-carbazole-spirobifluorene (4-PhCz-SBF) and 4-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)-spirobifluorene (4-Ph(OMe)3-SBF). The incorporation of the electron-rich moieties in the ortho position of the biphenyl linkage (position C4) induces unique properties, very different from those previously described in the literature for this family of semiconductors. Both dyes can be readily synthesized, possess high triplet energies and excellent thermal stability, and their HOMO energy levels are highly increased compared to those of other 4-substituted SBFs. We also provide in this work the first rationalization of the peculiar fluorescence of 4-substituted SBFs. Finally, the present dyes have been successfully incorporated as host in green and blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes with high performance either for the green (EQE of 20.2%) or the blue color (EQE of 9.6%). These performances are, to the best of our knowledge, among the highest reported to date for 4-substituted SBF derivatives.
