OBJECTIVE: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is considered an integral part of therapy in many hematological and non-hematological malignancies. The procedure can be highly stressful for patients. The primary objective of this study was to compare stress assessments in HSCT patients, depending on their stress coping style (CS) and type of treatment (autologous vs. allogeneic HSCT). METHODS: A short longitudinal study was conducted between May 2021 and June 2023 among patients with hematological cancers undergoing HSCT. The study involved four time points: the day of admission to hospital - T1, the day before HSCT - T2, 6 days after HSCT - T3, and the day of discharge - T4. Participants completed the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) on T1, and the Distress Thermometer (DT) on T1-T4. Descriptive statistics and a repeated measures ANOVA were conducted. RESULTS: A total of 128 participants completed the study: 54.2% female, mean age 48.7 years. They were divided into: (1) five groups based on their CS: task-oriented, emotion-oriented, avoidance-oriented, mix-oriented, differential-oriented; (2) two groups based on treatment type. The analyses showed significant differences in stress between the CS study groups (p = 0.001). The emotion-oriented group had the highest stress levels during the hospitalization period. There was also a significant time effect (p < 0.001): stress levels increased during the hospitalization period, peaking 6 days after HSCT, and decreased at discharge. CONCLUSIONS: Stress levels depend on coping styles and time points during the hospitalization period, which should be taken into account in planning psychological interventions for HSCT patients.

Mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) are effective in relapse prevention in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Internet-based interventions have been demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of MDD. Consequently, the integration of MBI through mobile applications emerges as a promising supplementary intervention for MDD, contributing to the augmentation of mental health services, particularly within ambulatory care contexts. The current randomized controlled study is designed to evaluate the efficacy of adjunctive MBI delivered via a mobile app in mitigating symptom severity and stress levels. This assessment involves a comparison with standard treatment practices in an ambulatory setting among individuals diagnosed with MDD. A total of 83 patients diagnosed with MDD (depressive episode, recurrent depression or depressive phase of bipolar disorder) were randomly allocated to the intervention (41 patients) or control condition (42 patients). The intervention consisted of the daily use of the mindfulness mobile application "Headspace" for thirty days. The control condition was treatment as usual (TAU) only. The symptom severity has been assessed by the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) as well as the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-17). Blood pressure and resting heart rate have been assessed as secondary outcome. Upon hospital discharge, the mean scores on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) signaled partial remission of MDD in both treatment arms. In both groups, a subsequent decrease in both self-reported and expert-rated scores was evident after a 30-day period. However, the decrease in depression severity as measured by HDRS was significantly higher in the MBI group compared to the control group after 30 days. For secondary outcomes, systolic blood pressure was lower in the intervention group compared to control group. The total drop-out rate was 29%. Short term mindfulness intervention via mobile application (30 days) can be beneficial as adjunctive therapy to treatment as usual in patients with MDD.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to implement a set of wearable technologies to record and analyze the surgeon's physiological and ergonomic parameters during the performance of conventional and robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery, comparing the ergonomics and stress levels of surgeons during surgical procedures. METHODS: This study was organized in two different settings: simulator tasks and experimental model surgical procedures. The participating surgeons performed the tasks and surgical procedures in both laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery in a randomized fashion. Different wearable technologies were used to record the surgeons' posture, muscle activity, electrodermal activity and electrocardiography signal during the surgical practice. RESULTS: The simulator study involved six surgeons: three experienced (>100 laparoscopic procedures performed; 36.33 ± 13.65 years old) and three novices (<100 laparoscopic procedures; 29.33 ± 8.39 years old). Three surgeons of different surgical specialties with experience in laparoscopic surgery (>100 laparoscopic procedures performed; 37.00 ± 5.29 years old), but without experience in surgical robotics, participated in the experimental model study. The participating surgeons showed an increased level of stress during the robotic-assisted surgical procedures. Overall, improved surgeon posture was obtained during robotic-assisted surgery, with a reduction in localized muscle fatigue. CONCLUSIONS: A set of wearable technologies was implemented to measure and analyze surgeon physiological and ergonomic parameters. Robotic-assisted procedures showed better ergonomic outcomes for the surgeon compared to conventional laparoscopic surgery. Ergonomic analysis allows us to optimize surgeon performance and improve surgical training.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the stress level and depression among orthopaedic surgeons in Saudi Arabia. In addition, to evaluate orthopedic training programs related factors that might have a critical role in the development of depression among orthopaedic surgeons. METHODS: The study adopted a cross-sectional study design. Two validated questionnaires were utilized, the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) for assessing depressive symptoms and stress levels. Data was collected by sending the survey to the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties so they could be distributed throughout all registered orthopaedic surgeons. RESULTS: The study sample consisted of 325 participants. The results revealed that the severity of depression varied across the different groups. As per the PHQ-9 criteria, 74 (22.8%) were initially diagnosed with major depression. Among assistant consultants, 39.5% reported severe depression, while 34.9% reported mild depression. Consultants predominantly reported moderate perceived stress (82.9%) with a notable proportion experiencing high perceived stress (12.4%). Assistant consultants showed a balanced distribution, with 93.0% reporting moderate perceived stress and 4.7% reporting high perceived stress. Demographic variables gender, relationship status and having children revealed statistically significant relationship with PHQ-9 scores (p-value < 0.05) but not with PSS-10 scores. CONCLUSION: The study highlights pressing need to address mental health concerns within orthopaedic surgeons. To address these challenges, healthcare institutions should implement comprehensive mental health support programs offering resources for stress management, counseling services, and peer support groups.

BACKGROUND: Stress is a pervasive occurrence within certain professions, including nurses working in emergency and intensive care unit environments. Nurses in these settings often confront various stress-inducing factors, such as unsupportive management and distressing events like patient mortality, and experience notably higher levels of stress. Nevertheless, information is scarce regarding the precise level of stress in Ethiopia, particularly within southern hospitals. OBJECTIVE: To assess stress levels and associated factors among nurses working in the critical care unit and emergency rooms at comprehensive specialized hospitals in southern Ethiopia, 2023. METHODS: A facility-based cross-sectional explanatory sequential mixed-method study was undertaken, involving a total of 239 nurses. For the quantitative component, all nurses working in intensive care units and emergency rooms were included as participants, while a purposive sampling technique was employed to select participants for the qualitative aspect. Data for the quantitative study were gathered through the utilization of self-administered questionnaires, while interviews were conducted using a structured interview guide for the qualitative portion. Quantitative data entry and analysis were performed using EpiDataV4.6 and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software, respectively. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data was conducted using the OpenCode software. RESULTS: The level of stress among nurses in the emergency and intensive care units was low (19.3%), moderate (55.9%), and high (24.8%). Workload (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 3.51, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.17-10.56) and time constraints (AOR = 2.5, 95% CI (1.03-6.07) were significantly associated with moderate stress level, while duty demands (AOR = 3.03, 95% CI (1.17-7.14), availability of medical equipment and supplies (AOR = 1.42, 95% CI (1.18-4.97), and witnessing death and dying (AOR = 2.34, 95% CI (1.13-5.88) were significantly associated with high-stress level. The qualitative data analysis revealed that the participants underscored the significant impact of organizational factors, individual factors, and profession-related factors on the stress levels experienced by nurses in emergency and critical care settings. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION: Based on the findings, the participants in this study experienced some level of stress, to varying degrees. Therefore, it is crucial to implement effective strategies such as optimizing staffing and workflow, improving communication and collaboration, providing adequate support and resources, leveraging technology and innovation, emphasizing patient-centered care, and implementing data-driven quality improvement to alleviate the burden.

A growing body of literature has linked exposure to "green space" (vegetation-rich areas) and other forms of nature to mental health. Exposure-outcome associations at regional or national scales can overlook local associations that define how geographically distinct populations may experience nature differently. Large-scale results might downplay the importance of lived experiences and heterogeneity of human-nature relationships at local scales. The current study examines three types of vegetative cover and identifies how they are associated with perceived stress in South Korea during and before the COVID-19 pandemic. We find forest cover is consistently negatively associated with perceived stress at nationwide scales. In contrast, grass cover and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) show mixed associations with perceived stress at nationwide scales. Models accounting for spatial and temporal variability demonstrate that associations of forest cover, grass cover, and NDVI with perceived stress varies across the country and the study's four-year time horizon. Local governments may need divergent urban greening strategies for health promotion that respond to their specific sociodemographic and pre-existing environmental conditions.

BACKGROUND: University students are vulnerable to changes due to COVID-19 pandemic. Although warning has been made about the impact of this crisis on students' mental health, there are barely any sufficient study. This work investigated how the pandemic affected the mental health of students at the Vietnam National University of Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCMC) and efficiency of available mental health supportive methods. METHODS: An online survey was conducted among students at Vietnam National University of Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCMC) from October 18, 2021, to October 25, 2021. Microsoft Excel 16.51 (Microsoft, USA) and R language, Epi packages 2.44 and 4.1.1 (rdrr.io) were used for data analysis. RESULTS: Thirty-seven thousand one hundred fifty students participated in the survey, including 48.4% female and 51.6% male. Online learning pressure was mainly recorded (65.1%). Many students suffered from sleeping disorders (56.2%). Some reported being victims of abuse (5.9%). Female students expressed a significantly higher level of distress than males, particularly the feeling of ambiguity about the purpose of life (p-value < 0.0001, OR: 0.94, 95% CI: [0.95-0.98]). Third-year students suffered higher stress levels than others, especially in online learning (68.8%, p-value < 0.05). Mental health statuses among students of different lockdown status regions were not significantly different. Therefore, lockdown status did not affect the stress levels of students which suggested that poor mental health outcomes seemed to root in the suspension of everyday university life rather than the prohibition of going out. CONCLUSIONS: During COVID-19, students experienced lots of stress and mental problems. These findings underscore the importance of academic and innovative activities, bringing attention to the needs of interactive study and extra-curricular activities.

The automotive industry and scientific community are making efforts to develop innovative solutions that would increase successful driver performance in preventing crashes caused by drivers' health and concentration. High stress is one of the causes of impaired driver performance. This study investigates the ability to classify different stress levels based on capacitive electrocardiogram (cECG) recorded during driving by unobtrusive acquisition systems with different hardware implementations. The proposed machine-learning model extracted only four features, based on the detection of the R peak, which is the most reliably detected characteristic point even in inferior quality cECG. Another criterion for selecting the features is their low computational complexity, which enables real-time application. The proposed method was validated on three open data sets recorded during driving: electrocardiogram (ECG) recorded by electrodes with direct skin contact (high quality); cECG recorded without direct skin contact through clothes by electrodes built into a portable multi-modal cushion (middle quality); and cECG recorded through the clothes without direct skin contact by electrodes built into a car seat (lowest quality). The proposed model achieved a high accuracy of 100% for high-quality ECG, 96.67% for middle-quality cECG, and 98.08% for the lower-quality cECG.

It is essential to estimate the stress state of the elderly to improve their QoL. Stress states change every day and hour, depending on the activities performed and the duration/intensity. However, most existing studies estimate stress states using only biometric information or specific activities (e.g., sleep duration, exercise duration/amount, etc.) as explanatory variables and do not consider all daily living activities. It is necessary to link various daily living activities and biometric information in order to estimate the stress state more accurately. Specifically, we construct a stress estimation model using machine learning with the answers to a stress status questionnaire obtained every morning and evening as the ground truth and the biometric data during each of the performed activities and the new proposed indicator including biological and activity perspectives as the features. We used the following methods: Baseline Method 1, in which the RRI variance and Lorenz plot area for 4 h after waking and 24 h before the questionnaire were used as features; Baseline Method 2, in which sleep time was added as a feature to Baseline Method 1; the proposed method, in which the Lorenz plot area per activity and total time per activity were added. We compared the results with the proposed method, which added the new indicators as the features. The results of the evaluation experiments using the one-month data collected from five elderly households showed that the proposed method had an average estimation accuracy of 59%, 7% better than Baseline Method 1 (52%) and 4% better than Baseline Method 2 (55%).

INTRODUCTION: Endovascular procedures have become commonplace in vascular surgery. This development calls for new training strategies for future specialists. Most simulation-based education (SBE) programs have a monodisciplinary focus on physicians, although successful surgery is a multidisciplinary team effort. Mental stress impairs the learning process and surgical performance and heart rate variability (HRV) can be measured as a proxy for both mental and physical stress. This study aims to assess how SBE of endovascular scrub nurses affects team performance and HRV during endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective interventional study in which EVAR-inexperienced scrub nurses followed a focused SBE EVAR program. During real-life EVAR procedures, HRV was continuously recorded with a wireless electrocardiogram patch and multidisciplinary team performance was assessed with the Imperial College Error CAPture (ICECAP) tool, before and after the SBE program, allowing each scrub nurse to serve as their own control. Eight scrub nurses with experience in lower limb endovascular procedures, but not EVAR, were invited to participate. RESULTS: Seven participants completed the study. In five of seven scrub nurses, HRV-derived stress levels during real-time EVAR procedures were lower after SBE compared to before SBE. Mean HRV increased from 24 msec to 35 msec (P < 0.001), indicating stress level reduction. Before SBE, the mean number of errors/hour was 7.3 (standard deviation ± 1.8) compared to 3.6 (standard deviation ± 2.7) after SBE. Most errors were categorized as technical (58 %) and communicative (23 %). CONCLUSIONS: SBE of scrub nurses may improve team performance and may lower mental stress during EVAR procedures. In this small study, we suggest using mental stress, as evaluated with HRV, and multidisciplinary team performance, as evaluated with ICECAP, to assess SBE effectiveness in real-case EVAR procedures. This SBE program and live ICECAP observations and electrocardiogram patches was well-accepted by scrub nurses and the entire team.

Research over the last 10 years suggests that the brain's reward system plays a crucial role in stress resilience. Notably, reward processing includes both an anticipatory (cue-triggered "wanting") phase and a consummatory ("liking") phase. However, previous studies manipulated rewards via direct reward administration, which makes it difficult to isolate the buffering effect of anticipating the reward stimulus. In the current study, we designed a paradigm to manipulate participants into generating reward anticipation or not and investigated whether reward anticipation can buffer psychological, neuroendocrine, and cardiovascular responses to psychosocial stress. A sample of 78 healthy young adults underwent the Trier Social Stress Test or placebo-Trier Social Stress Test after a reward anticipation task. Results showed that reward anticipation relieved subjective stress feelings, as well as the overall cortisol secretion and the increased heart rate induced by psychosocial stress. Taken together, these findings expanded our understanding of the role the reward system plays in stress resilience, and the possible psychological mechanism of the buffering effect for future stress study was also discussed.HIGHLIGHTSReward processing includes both an anticipatory and consummatory phasesThe buffering effect of anticipating the reward stimulus requires elucidationWe examined if said anticipation buffers varied responses to psychosocial stressReward anticipation relieved subjective stress, cortisol secretion, and heart rateWe clarified the role of the reward system in stress resilience.

OBJECTIVE: Stress during residency training in surgical disciplines not only hampers professional development but can also compromise patient care and personal health. The purpose of this study was to measure the stress level among the surgical residents, identify factors within the learning and work environment that cause stress, and identify different strategies that the residents use habitually to cope with these stresses. METHODOLOGY: This mix method study was conducted in the department of Surgery at Aga Khan University, Pakistan. Residents' stress level was measured using Perceived Stress Scale (PSS); focus group discussions (FGDs) with faculty and residents explored stressors during residency training, while Brief COPE Inventory identified the residents' preferred coping strategy. RESULTS: A total of 68 (83%) surgery residents completed the survey of which 19% had high stress scores while only one resident had perception of low stress. Females had significantly higher stress scores (25.7±3.0; p=0.008) as compared to male counterparts. Planning (87.8%) and Self-distraction (65%) were the most commonly used adaptive and maladaptive strategies respectively. The reliability of the PSS and BCI measured by Cronbach's alpha was 0.73 and 0.82 respectively. Work-life imbalance, workload and contradicting programme and hospital policies were identified in FGDs as major stressors during residency. CONCLUSIONS: Although surgical residency programmes are very stressful, coping strategies are not formally taught during surgical training. Academia and hospital should join hands in developing interventions to enable residents cope with the situation.

Objective: To investigate the association of blood oxidative stress level with hypertriglyceridemia in the elderly aged 65 years and older in China. Methods: A total of 2 393 participants aged 65 years and older were recruited in 9 longevity areas from Heathy Aging and Biomarkers Cohort Study, during 2017 to 2018. Information on demographics characteristic, life style and health status were collected by questionnaire and physical examination, and venous blood was collected to detect the levels of blood oxidative stress and hypertriglyceridemia. The linear or non-linear association between oxidative stress and hypertriglyceridemia was described by restrictive cubic splines (RCS) fitting multiple linear regression model. The generalized linear mixed effect model was conducted to assess the association between oxidative stress and hypertriglyceridemia. Results: A total of 2 393 participants, mean age was 84.6 years, the youngest was 65 and the oldest was 112, the male was 47.9%(1 145/2 393), the triglyceride level was (1.4±0.8) mmol/L. The hypertriglyceridemia detection rate was 9.99%(239/2 393). The results of multiple linear regression model with restrictive cubic spline fitting showed that MDA level was linear association with triglyceride level; SOD level was nonlinear association with triglyceride level. MDA level had significantly association with hypertriglyceridemia, and the corresponding OR value was 1.063 (95%CI: 1.046,1.081) with 1 nmol/ml increment of blood MDA; SOD level had significantly association with hypertriglyceridemia, and the corresponding OR value was 0.986(95%CI: 0.983,0.989) with 1 U/ml increment of blood SOD. Conclusion: Among the elderly aged 65 and older in 9 longevity areas in China, MDA and SOD levels were associated with the risk of hypertriglyceridemia.

In this study, a novel classification method for a driver's cognitive stress level was proposed, whereby the interbeat intervals extracted from an electrocardiogram (ECG) signal were transferred to pictures, and a convolution neural network (CNN) was used to train the pictures to classify a driver's cognitive stress level. First, we defined three levels of tasks and collected the ECG signal of the driver at different cognitive stress levels by designing and performing a driving simulation experiment. We extracted the interbeat intervals and converted them to pictures according to the number of consecutive interbeat intervals in each picture. Second, the CNN model was used to train the data set to recognize the cognitive stress levels. Classification accuracies of 100%, 91.6% and 92.8% were obtained for the training set, validation set and test set, respectively, and were compared with those the BP neural network. Last, we discussed the influence of the number of interbeat intervals in each picture on the performance of the proposed classification method. The results showed that the performance initially improved with an increase in the number of interbeat intervals. A downward trend was observed when the number exceeded 40, and when the number was 40, the model performed best with the highest accuracy (98.79%) and a relatively low relative standard deviation (0.019).

The aim in this literature review was (1) to explore the physiologically and psychologically therapeutic benefits of forest bathing on adults suffering from pre-hypertension or hypertension, and (2) to identify the type, duration, and frequency of an effective forest bathing intervention in the management of pre-hypertension and hypertension, so as to provide directions for future interventions or research. The electronic databases PubMed, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PsyINFO, and the China Academic Journals (CAJ) offered through the Full-text Database (CNKI) were searched for relevant studies published from the inception of the databases to April 2019. Of the 364 articles that were identified, 14 met the criteria for inclusion in this review. The synthesis of the findings in the included studies revealed that forest bathing interventions were effective at reducing blood pressure, lowering pulse rate, increasing the power of heart rate variability (HRV), improving cardiac-pulmonary parameters, and metabolic function, inducing a positive mood, reducing anxiety levels, and improving the quality of life of pre-hypertensive or hypertensive participants. Forest walking and forest therapy programs were the two most effective forest bathing interventions. Studies reported that practicing a single forest walking or forest therapy program can produce short-term physiological and psychological benefits. It is concluded that forest bathing, particularly forest walking and therapy, has physiologically and psychologically relaxing effects on middle-aged and elderly people with pre-hypertension and hypertension.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the stress levels among medical and dental students and to evaluate their coping strategies. METHODS: The cross-sectional comparative study was conducted at the Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry, Karachi, from January to February 2018, and comprised medical students from 3rd, 4th and 5th years, and dental students of 3rd and 4th year. Cohen Perceived Stress Scale was used to collect data which was then analysed using SPSS 21. RESULTS: Of the 400 students approached, 281(70.25%) responded. There were 159(56.5%) medical and 122(43.4%) dental students. Also, 78(27.7%) students were males and 203(72.2%) were females. The stress level was moderate or high in 267(95%) students; 118(96.7%) dental, 149(93.7%) medical. Stress management strategies included meditation/praying 181(64.4%), spending some time to relax 180(64.1%) and sleeping 177(63%). CONCLUSIONS: Dental students had slightly higher stress level than medical students. The most common stress management strategy was meditation/praying.

BACKGROUND: Performing cardiopulmonary bypass is a complex task which involves evaluating visual input from patient monitors and technical parameters displayed at the heart-lung machine console as well as reacting to other sensory input. Only few studies are available concerning the competency requirements for clinical cardiovascular perfusionists, including attention, perception, and coping with mental stress. This study aims at evaluating attention, perception, and stress levels of clinical cardiovascular perfusionists during cardiopulmonary bypass. METHODS: Nine clinical cardiovascular perfusionists voluntarily offered to participate in the study. Participants were asked to wear Tobii 2 eye-tracking glasses throughout the procedures. Specific time points were analyzed (cardiopulmonary bypass on, initial cardioplegia delivery, steady state, cross-clamp off, and weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass). Data acquisition was supplemented by participants' self-evaluation regarding their stress levels and by National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA TLX) questionnaires. RESULTS: Seven datasets were sufficient to be evaluated. The clinical cardiovascular perfusionists' professional experience ranged from 0.5 to 24 years. Evaluation of eye-tracking data revealed large variations in areas of interest hits, fixation, and dwell times. Across all phases, the venous reservoir, mean arterial pressure, arterial pump display, cardioplegia control, and data management system received the highest levels of attention. Pupil diameter measurements increased at start of cardiopulmonary bypass, cardioplegia delivery, and weaning off, but returned to base level during steady state. Clinical cardiovascular perfusionists' self-evaluation showed that subjective stress level was highest at the start and the end of the procedure. NASA TLX questionnaires revealed medium-to-high mental and temporal workloads, but low physical workloads. Performance, effort, and frustration indices showed medium workloads. CONCLUSION: During cardiopulmonary bypass, perfusionists are subjected to stress. Peak stress levels were highest during start and end of cardiopulmonary bypass. Furthermore, visual attention and perception varied between the operative phases. Further studies are indicated to evaluate the design of heart-lung machines and stress-coping strategies during cardiopulmonary bypass.

An office chair for analyzing the seated posture variation during the performance of a stress-level test is presented in this work. To meet this aim, we placed a set of textile pressure sensors both on the backrest and on the seat of the chair. The position of the sensors was selected for maximizing the detection of variations of user's posture. The effectiveness of the designed system was evaluated through an experiment where increasing stress levels were obtained by administering a Stroop test. The collected results had been analyzed by considering three different time intervals based on the difficulty level of the test (low, medium, and high). A transition analysis conducted on postures assumed during the test showed that participants reached a different posture at the end of the test, when the cognitive engagement increased, with respect to the beginning. This evidence highlighted the presence of movement presumably due to the increased cognitive engagement. Overall, the performed analysis showed the proposed monitoring system could be used to identify body posture variations related to different levels of engagement of a seated user while performing cognitive tasks.

Among professions of social services the highest level of stress is connected with health care and saving lives. This work demands making decisions, rapid changes, coordination of unforeseen requirements, moreover abounds in critical situations. One of the important factors affecting an ability of managing stressful situations are personality traits. AIM: The aim of this study was to verify hypothesis if there is a connection between personality traits (extraversion, neuroticism, psychoticism) and level of perceived stress among health care workers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 180 participants of training (Certificated Partner of the Mental Health Center conducted in Poland) were selected to the analysis: psychologists, paramedics, nureses and doctors. Research was conducted using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ-R). RESULTS: Statistically significant corellation was observed in relation to subjectively experienced tension and results in scale of Psychoticism and Neuroticism (positive relationship). In case of extraversion scale corellation has negative character, but is not statistically important. CONCLUSIONS: Neuroticism as a state feature of character dominate among helath care workers. Both neuroticism and psychoticism conduce to negative effects of experienced stress.

Pre-stress degradation or looseness of rock bolts in mining or tunnel engineering threatens the stability and reliability of the structures. In this paper, an innovative piezoelectric device named a "smart washer" with the impedance method is proposed with the aim of developing a real-time device to monitor the pre-stress level of rock bolts. The proposed method was verified through tests on a rock bolt specimen. By applying high-frequency sweep excitations (typically >30 kHz) to the smart washer that was installed on the rock bolt specimen, we observed that the variation in impedance signatures indicated the rock bolt pre-stress status. With the degradation of rock bolt pre-stress, the frequency in the dominating peak of the real part of the electrical impedance signature increased. To quantify the effectiveness of the proposed technique, a normalized root mean square deviation (RMSD) index was developed to evaluate the degradation level of the rock bolt pre-stress. The experimental results demonstrated that the normalized RMSD-based looseness index, which was computed from the impedance value detected by the "smart washer", increased with loss of the pre-stress of the rock bolt. Therefore, the proposed method can effectively detect the degradation of rock bolt pre-stress, as demonstrated by experiments.
