RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis (HD) patients present an increased carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and calcified plaques, and studies have demonstrated that CIMT is predictor for cardiovascular death in this patient population; hence, the importance of identifying early non-invasive markers of atherosclerosis. We aim to propose a new three-perspective CIMT measuring method in HD population, and to further investigate the possible use and value of this method to predict outcomes. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted, the CIMT was measured with duplex ultrasound during the perioperative access planning. Software provided maximum CIMT in a 10 mm (mm) width of the common carotid artery. CIMT was measured in Right (R) and Left (L) carotid arteries, both in anterior (a), lateral (l), and posterior (p) view. The sum of these values (Ra+Rl+Rp+La+Ll+Lp) was completed and termed as Sixth Carotid Intimal (SCI) score. We stratified either in low (summation <4) or high (>=4) SCI score groups. Demographics, patency rates, complications, and mortality were collected; chi-square test was used for our analysis. RESULTS: A total of 30 patients (mean age 49 years and 56% females) that underwent access creation in the upper arm from 2010 to 2016 were selected and studied. A low SCI score was found 19 patients and 11 had high SCI, no significant difference was observed in demographics, history cardiovascular disease, and clinical outcomes as early thrombosis, and primary, primary-assisted patency at 12 months. Interestingly, during the follow up period of 36 months a significant higher difference in late thrombosis rates occurred (63.6% vs 26.3%, p = .044) and a higher all-cause mortality (54.4% vs 15.7%, p = .025) in patients with SCI score group above 4. CONCLUSIONS: The SCI score method, might offer a screening tool for traditional cardiovascular risk factors in HD patients. In this study, we demonstrate an increased rate in late thrombosis and mortality in those with high SCI. Further research is necessary to better define the role of CIMT in vascular surgical procedures.

RESUMO

Metal thickness measurements are essential in various industrial applications, yet current non-contact ultrasonic methods face limitations in range and accuracy, hindering the widespread adoption of electromagnetic ultrasonics. This study introduces a novel combined thickness measurement method employing fuzzy logic, with the aim of broadening the applicational scope of the EMAT. Leveraging minimal hardware, this method utilizes the short pulse time-of-flight (TOF) technique for initial thickness estimation, followed by secondary measurements guided by fuzzy logic principles. The integration of measurements from the resonance, short pulse echo, and linear frequency modulation echo extends the measurement range while enhancing accuracy. Rigorous experimental validation validates the method's effectiveness, demonstrating a measurement range of 0.3-1000.0 mm with a median error within ±0.5 mm. Outperforming traditional methods like short pulse echoes, this approach holds significant industrial potential.

RESUMO

Ultrasonic thickness measurement of mechanical structures is one of the most popular and commonly used nondestructive methods for various kinds of process control and corrosion monitoring. With ultrasonic propagation speed being temperature-dependent, the thickness measurement can be performed reliably only when the thermal profile is completely known. Most conventional techniques assume the temperature of the test structure is uniform and at room temperature across its thickness. Such assumptions may lead to large errors in the thickness measurement, especially when there are significant temperature variations across the thickness. State-of-the-art techniques use external temperature measurements or implement iterative methods to compensate for the unknown thermal profiles. However, such techniques produce unsatisfactory results when the heat distribution is complex or varies rapidly with time. In this work, we propose a two-sensors technique, using both compressive and shear excitations, with a non-iterative rapid data processing method for accurate thickness measurement under arbitrary time-variant thermal profile. The independent behavior of shear and compressive waves is used to formulate a real-time thickness estimation technique. The developed technique is experimentally validated on a steel plate with fixed acoustic sensors. Test results show that the error in thickness estimation can be reduced by up to 98% compared to conventional thickness gauging methods.

RESUMO

Air-coupled ultrasound sensors have advantages over contact ultrasound sensors when a sample should not become contaminated or influenced by the couplant or the measurement has to be a fast and automated inline process. Thereby, air-coupled transducers must emit high-energy pulses due to the low air-to-solid power transmission ratios (10-3 to 10-8). Currently used resonant transducers trade bandwidth-a prerequisite for material parameter analysis-against pulse energy. Here we show that a combination of a non-resonant ultrasound emitter and a non-resonant detector enables the generation and detection of pulses that are both high in amplitude (130 dB) and bandwidth (2 µs pulse width). We further show an initial application: the detection of reflections inside of a carbon fiber reinforced plastic plate with thicknesses between 1.7 mm and 10 mm. As the sensors work contact-free, the time of flight and the period of the in-plate reflections are independent parameters. Hence, a variation of ultrasound velocity is distinguishable from a variation of plate thickness and both properties are determined simultaneously. The sensor combination is likely to find numerous industrial applications necessitating high automation capacity and opens possibilities for air-coupled, single-side ultrasonic inspection.

RESUMO

Thin multi-layered materials are widely used in key structures of many high technology industries. To ensure the quality and safety of structures, layer thickness measurement by non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques is essential. In this paper, a novel approach for the measurement of each layer's thickness in thin multi-layered material is proposed by using ring-shaped laser generated focused ultrasonic bulk waves. The proposed method uses a ring-shaped laser with a variable radius to generate shear waves with variable focus inside the structure. By analyzing the signal characteristics at the ring center when the laser radius varies from zero to maximum, the direct measurement of layer thickness can be realized, considering that only when the focal depth and the layer thickness satisfy the specific relationship, the reflected shear waves converge and form a peak at the ring center. This straightforward approach can increase the pulse-echo SNR and prevent the processing of aliasing signals, and therefore provides higher efficiency and accuracy for the layer thickness measurement. In order to investigate the feasibility of this method, finite element simulations were conducted to simulate the ring-shaped laser generated ultrasonic waves in multi-layered structure in detail. Following the principle of the proposed method, the layer thickness of a bi-layer and 3-layer structure were respectively measured using simulation data. The results confirm that the proposed method can accurately and efficiently measure the layer thickness of thin multi-layered material.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To represent choroidal thickness (CT) and choroidal volume (CV) databases in diabetic retinopathy (DR) patients and healthy control participants using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and enhanced depth imaging OCT (EDI-OCT). No study had evaluated CT at all main stages of diabetic retinopathy in a single study. METHODS: The study included 176 eyes from 93 patients (39-80 years old; 42% females) who were divided into three groups based on DR severity and normal control group: 39 eyes no DR, 64 eyes NPDR, 33 eyes PDR, and 40 eyes normal control. The CT and CV were measured and statistically analyzed. Intra-observer and inter-observer coefficients of repeatability were calculated. RESULTS: Subfoveal CT showed persistent thinning from normal group (322.50 ± 69.24) to no-diabetic retinopathy (NDR, 308.33 ± 74.45) to nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR, 283.45 ± 56.50) group and then thickening as the patient progressed to proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR, 295.17 ± 95.69) (P = 0.087). A significant difference was found between the control group and the NDR, NPDR, and PDR groups in nearly all CT and CV of Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study macular subfields. Fasting blood sugar (FBS = 189.08 ± 51.3 mg/dl) and diabetes mellitus (DM) duration (13.6 ± 6.5 years) had no noticeable effect on CT. In patients with diabetes, the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), diabetic macular edema (DME), and foveal avascular zone (FAZ) were not affected by CT and CV. CONCLUSIONS: The choroidal thickness decreases from the early stages of diabetic retinopathy up to the NPDR stage, with a subsequent modest rise in CT during the PDR stage. There was no correlation between FBS, diabetes duration, BCVA, DME, and FAZ, and CT.

RESUMO

Energy-filtering transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and bright-field TEM can be used to extract local sample thickness $t$ and to generate two-dimensional sample thickness maps. Electron tomography can be used to accurately verify the local $t$. The relations of log-ratio of zero-loss filtered energy-filtering TEM beam intensity ($I_{{\rm ZLP}}$) and unfiltered beam intensity ($I_{\rm u}$) versus sample thickness $t$ were measured for five values of collection angle in a microscope equipped with an energy filter. Furthermore, log-ratio of the incident (primary) beam intensity ($I_{\rm p}$) and the transmitted beam $I_{{\rm tr}}$ versus $t$ in bright-field TEM was measured utilizing a camera before the energy filter. The measurements were performed on a multilayer sample containing eight materials and thickness $t$ up to 800 nm. Local thickness $t$ was verified by electron tomography. The following results are reported:• The maximum thickness $t_{{\rm max}}$ yielding a linear relation of log-ratio, $\ln ( {I_{\rm u}}/{I_{{\rm ZLP}}})$ and $\ln ( {I_{\rm p}}/{I_{{\rm tr}}} )$, versus $t$.• Inelastic mean free path ($\lambda _{{\rm in}}$) for five values of collection angle.• Total mean free path ($\lambda _{{\rm total}}$) of electrons excluded by an angle-limiting aperture.• $\lambda _{{\rm in}}$ and $\lambda _{{\rm total}}$ are evaluated for the eight materials with atomic number from $\approx$10 to 79.The results can be utilized as a guide for upper limit of $t$ evaluation in energy-filtering TEM and bright-field TEM and for optimizing electron tomography experiments.

RESUMO

An astigmatic optical profilometer is a precision instrument with advantages such as high resolution, high bandwidth, a compact size, and low cost. However, current astigmatic optical profilometers measure only surface morphology, and their potential for capturing subsurface information remains underutilized. In this study, we developed a method for measuring the thickness of transparent thin films with an astigmatic optical profilometer. Experimental results demonstrate that the thickness of transparent films tens of micrometers thick can be accurately measured. The maximum thickness measurable through our system is approximately 100 µm, which may be increased to 1.2 mm through the use of a scanner with a greater travel range. A coupling problem occurs for films <25 µm in thickness. However, to solve this problem, we devised a decoupling method, which was experimentally implemented to successfully measure a 18-µm-thick film. Moreover, the ability to obtain 3D images, including of both the upper and lower surfaces, was demonstrated.

RESUMO

In high-temperature environments, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the signal measured by electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMAT) is low, and the signal characteristics are difficult to extract, which greatly affects their application in practical industry. Aiming at this problem, this paper proposes the least mean square adaptive filtering interpolation denoising method based on variational modal decomposition (AFIV). Firstly, the high-temperature EMAT signal was decomposed by variational modal decomposition (VMD). Then the high-frequency and low-frequency noises in the signal were filtered according to the excitation center frequency. Following the wavelet threshold denoising (WTD) for the noise component after VMD decomposition was carried out. Afterward, the noise component and signal component were connected by an adaptive filtering process to achieve further noise reduction. Finally, cubic spline interpolation was used to smooth the noise reduction curve and obtain the time information. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, it was applied to two kinds of ultrasonic signals from 25 to 700 °C. Compared with VMD, WTD, and empirical mode decomposition denoising, the SNR was increased by 2 times. The results show that this method can better extract the effective information of echo signals and realize the online thickness measurement at high temperature.

RESUMO

Infrastructure facilities that were built approximately half a century ago have rapidly aged. Steel sheet piles, the inspection object in this study, are severely corroded, resulting in cave-in damages at wharfs. To solve such a problem, non-destructive inspection techniques are required. We previously demonstrated plate thickness measurement using extremely low-frequency eddy current testing. However, when the steel sheet piles are located in water, shellfish adhere to their surface, causing a lift-off of several tens of millimeters. Therefore, this large lift-off hinders the thickness measurement owing to fluctuations of magnetic signals. In this study, sensor probes with different coil diameters were prototyped and the optimum size for measuring steel sheet piles at high lift-off was investigated. Using the probes, the magnetic field was applied with a lift-off range from 0 to 80 mm, and the intensity and phase of the detected magnetic field were analyzed. Subsequently, by increasing the probe diameter, a good sensitivity was obtained for the thickness estimation with a lift-off of up to 60 mm. Moreover, these probes were used to measure the thickness of actual steel sheet piles, and measurements were successfully obtained at a high lift-off.

RESUMO

Glaucoma is a sight threatening disorder in which measuring intra-ocular pressure (IOP) with accuracy plays a fundamental role. This study aimed to compare the IOP values air-puff of non-contact tonometer(APT) and Goldmann applanation tonometer (GAT) along with their relationship to central corneal thickness (CCT), in various IOP groups. Three hundred and eleven patients were enrolled using convenience sampling in this cross-sectional, prospective study. IOP was measured with Keeler 3000 APT and GAT along with CCT using TOMEY EM-4000. Data was analysed using Bland-Altman, Spearman's and intra-class correlation analysis of APT, GAT and CCT on SPSS 24.0. The median IOP by APT and GAT was 14 mmHg (range:37) and 12 mmHg (range:16) whereas the median CCT was 534µ (range: 44), respectively. At low (<10 mmHg) and normal IOP (10-20 mmHg) both the instruments showed similar results but GAT was found to be more accurate (p£0.001) at higher IOP (21-30 mmHg). However, at moderate and higher groups of IOP, APT revealed overestimation of IOP compared to GAT. CCT also plays a significant role.

RESUMO

A simple and fast method for thickness measurements using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) is described. The method is applicable on samples with a thickness smaller than the electron depth range and does not require any knowledge of instrumental parameters. The thickness is determined by means of the distance that electrons travel inside the sample before crossing through it. Samples are first deposited on a substrate that, when reached by the transmitted electrons, produces an X-ray signal. The measured characteristic X-ray line intensity of the substrate is later used to determine the energy of transmitted electrons, which is proportional to the distance that electrons travel inside the sample. The study was performed on spherical K411 glass particles and cylindrical particles of UCe oxide with a size ranging from 0.2 to 4 µm. The measured thicknesses of all the studied particles showed good agreements with the real values. Although the method is only validated on particles with usual shapes, it can be applied to determine a local thickness of thin samples with irregular morphologies. This can help solving multiple issues in analysis with EPMA of non-bulk samples exhibiting complex geometries. Three dimensional microscopic imaging could also find a good utility in the described method.

RESUMO

Coatings or films are applied to a substrate for several applications, such as waterproofing, corrosion resistance, adhesion performance, cosmetic effects, and optical coatings. When applying a coating to a substrate, it is vital to monitor the coating thickness during the coating process to achieve a product to the desired specification via real time production control. There are several different coating thickness measurement methods that can be used, either in-line or off-line, which can determine the coating thickness relative to the material of the coating and the substrate. In-line coating thickness measurement methods are often very difficult to design and implement due to the nature of the harsh environmental conditions of typical production processes and the speed at which the process is run. This paper addresses the current and novel coating thickness methodologies for application to chromium coatings on a ferro-magnetic steel substrate with their advantages and limitations regarding in-line measurement. The most common in-line coating thickness measurement method utilized within the steel packaging industry is the X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) method, but these systems can become costly when implemented for a wide packaging product and pose health and safety concerns due to its ionizing radiation. As technology advances, nanometer-scale coatings are becoming more common, and here three methods are highlighted, which have been used extensively in other industries (with several variants in their design) which can potentially measure coatings of nanometer thickness in a production line, precisely, safely, and do so in a non-contact and non-destructive manner. These methods are optical reflectometry, ellipsometry and interferometry.

RESUMO

Ultrasonic guided waves are already used for material characterization. The advantage of these waves is that they propagate in the plane of a plate and their propagation characteristics are sensitive to properties of the material. The objective of this research was to develop an ultrasonic method that could be used to measure the properties of thin plastic polyvinylchloride films (PVC). The proposed method exploits two fundamental Lamb wave modes, A0 and S0, for measurement of a thin film thickness and Young's modulus. The Young's modulus is found from the measured phased velocity of the S0 mode and the film thickness from the velocities of both A0 and S0 modes. By using the proposed semi-contactless measurement algorithm, the Young's modulus and thickness of different thickness (150 µm and 200 µm) PVC films were measured. The uncertainty of thickness measurements of the thinner 150 µm PVC film is 2% and the thicker 200 µm PVC film is 3.9%.

RESUMO

Time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) in the terahertz (THz) frequency range is gaining in importance in nondestructive testing of dielectric materials. One application is the layer thickness measurement of a coating layer. To determine the thickness from the measurement data, the refractive index of the coating layer must be known in the surveyed frequency range. For perpendicular incidence of the radiation, methods exist to extract the refractive index from the measurement data themselves without prior knowledge. This paper extends these methods for non-perpendicular incidence, where the polarization of the radiation becomes important. Furthermore, modifications considering effects of surface roughness of the coating are introduced. The new methods are verified using measurement data of a sample of Inconel steel coated with yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and with COMSOL simulations of the measurement setup. To validate the thickness measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the layer structure are used. The results show good agreement with an average error of 1% for the simulation data and under 4% for the experimental data compared to reference measurements.

RESUMO

An ultrasonic sensors system is commonly used to measure the wall thickness of buried pipelines in the transportation of oil and gas. The key of the system is to precisely measure time-of-flight difference (TOFD) produced by the reflection of ultrasonic on the inner and outer surfaces of the pipelines. In this paper, based on deep learning, a novel method termed Wave-Transform Network is proposed to tackle the issues. The network consists of two parts: part 1 is designed to separate the potential overlapping ultrasonic echo signals generated from two surfaces, and part 2 is utilized to divide the sample points of each signal into two types corresponding to before and after the arrival time of ultrasonic echo, which can determine the time-of-flight (TOF) of each signal and calculate the thickness of pipelines. Numerical simulation and actual experiments are carried out, and the results show satisfactory performances.

RESUMO

An ultrahigh resolution thickness measurement sensor was proposed based on a single mode-hollow core-single mode (SMF-HCF-SMF) fiber structure by coating a thin layer of material on the HCF surface. Theoretical analysis shows that the SMF-HCF-SMF fiber structure can measure coating thickness down to sub-nanometers. An experimental study was carried out by coating a thin layer of graphene oxide (GO) on the HCF surface of the fabricated SMF-HCF-SMF fiber structure. The experimental results show that the fiber sensor structure can detect a thin layer with a thickness down to 0.21 nanometers, which agrees well with the simulation results. The proposed sensing technology has the advantages of simple configuration, ease of fabrication, low cost, high resolution, and good repeatability, which offer great potential for practical thickness measurement applications.

RESUMO

This paper presents a method to simultaneously determine the thickness and permittivity of thin layers from multi-frequency reflection coefficient measurements using an open-ended coaxial probe. This is achieved by exploiting that the probe becomes radiating at frequencies higher than the probe's typical operating range. Permittivity information is extracted from measurements in the typical frequency range, whereas thickness information is obtained from high frequency measurements by exploiting resonances that occur when the radiated waves are reflected at the layer boundary. A finite element model of the measurement set-up is made in COMSOL MultiphysicsTM, and a matrix of simulations spanning the relevant layer thicknesses and permittivity range is generated. The measured permittivity spectra of unknown samples are compared to the simulation matrix to estimate layer thickness and permittivity. The method is verified by measurements of water-ethanol mixtures. An application example where the water fraction and layer thickness of a gas hydrate deposition layer is estimated from permittivity measurements in a multiphase flow loop is also presented.

RESUMO

Thin films are a type of coating that have a very wide spectrum of applications. They may be used as single layers or composed in multilayer stacks, which significantly extend their applications. One of the most commonly used material for thin films is silicon dioxide, SiO2. Although there are other tools that can be used to measure the thickness of SiO2 films, these tools are very complex and sophisticated. In this article, we propose the use of an exponential two-layer light-material interaction model, throughout its diffuse reflectance spectra, as an alternative for the measurement of the thickness of evaporated SiO2 on Si wafers. The proposed model is evaluated experimentally by means of a 980-nm-thick SiO2 layer evaporated on a Si wafer. The results show that the proposed model has a strong correlation with the thickness measurements obtained using commercial equipment.
