BACKGROUND: Appropriate communication with dental patients enhances treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction. Implementing simulated patient interviews courses can improve patient-centered care and reduce conflict during clerkship training. Therefore, this study explored the relationship among student participation in a situational simulation course (SSC), academic performance, clerkship performance, and objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) performance. METHODS: This study was conducted with a sample of fifth-year dental students undergoing clerkship training. After implementing a situational simulation course to investigate the relationship among participation in SSC, academic performance, clerkship performance, and OSCE performance, a path analysis model was developed and tested. RESULTS: Eighty-seven fifth-year dental students were eligible for the SSC, and most (n = 70, 80.46%) volunteered to participate. The path analysis model revealed that academic performance had a direct effect on OSCE performance (ß = 0.281, P = 0.003) and clerkship performance (ß = 0.441, P < 0.001). In addition, SSC teaching had a direct effect on OSCE performance (ß = 0.356, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: SSCs can enhance dental students' non-operational clinical competency and OSCE performance effectively. Simulated patient encounters with feedback, incorporated into the dental curricula, have led to improved communication. Based on our findings, we suggest implementing SSC teaching before the OSCE to improve communication and cognitive skills.

INTRODUCTION: To assess patients' satisfaction with the dental care provided to them by the undergraduate students at Jordan University Hospital. In addition, to investigate whether the age or gender of patients had any correlation with the level of satisfaction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Dental Satisfaction Questionnaire (DSQ) developed by the RAND Corporation was used to measure patient satisfaction. The questionnaire was translated to Arabic the native language of the country and it consisted of 14 questions, which measure the overall satisfaction and the subscales of access, convenience and availability, continuity of treatment and quality of dental care provided. RESULTS: A total of 94 patients (58.5% female, 41.5% male) answered the DSQ, the Overall Dental Satisfaction Index (DSI) was found to be 86.2%, and there was no correlation between gender or age groups and the DSI (p < .05). All 14 questions scored above 4/5 except the question about whether the schools' building and dental units being modern and well equipped (3.7/5), and the general satisfaction question (3.2/5). CONCLUSIONS: Patients who were treated at the student clinics at the University of Jordan, School of Dentistry were found to be satisfied about both the quality of treatment and the dental environment, while reporting some negative aspects related mainly to the clinics building which they found to be very old and crowded. This study found no correlation between patients' satisfaction and the age or gender of the participants.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to understand the trends of teaching Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) in the undergraduate dental curriculum in the MENA region by conducting an online survey among the undergraduate dental colleges in this region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An online survey was conducted using Google Forms consisting of 20 questions that could be answered by "yes" or "no" responses, multiple-choice answers or in a descriptive, "open" format. A total of 55 participants from the MENA region representing their dental college were requested to participate in this study. RESULTS: The response rate of the survey was 85.5% following the twofold follow-up reminders method. Although the vast majority of professors demonstrated vital knowledge in the practical use of CAD/CAM, the majority of them did not provide theoretical and practical training on CAD/CAM in their institutions. Among the schools with established levels of teaching CAD/CAM, nearly 50% of them provide both pre-clinical and clinical training on CAD/CAM. Despite the availability of extra-curricular training courses on CAD/CAM outside the university setting, there is a lack of advocating for students to enrol in those courses by the institutions. More than 80% of the participants agreed that CAD/CAM has a strong future in chair-side dental clinics and CAD/CAM needs to be incorporated within undergraduate studies. CONCLUSION: Based on the results of the current study, it is understandable that an intervention is required by the dental education providers to cope with the growing demand for CAD/CAM technology for the current and future dental practitioners of the MENA region.

INTRODUCTION: In dental hygiene education, a combination of ethics and professionalism, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills are utilized while managing conflict in academic settings, especially in academic clinical patient care settings. Limited evidence exists in determining whether emotional intelligence is related to conflict management styles (CMS). PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether relationships exist between emotional intelligence and CMS among undergraduate dental hygiene students. METHODS: This quantitative cross-sectional survey research study involved a non-probabilistic sample of undergraduate dental hygiene students in the Western United States. The survey instrument consisted of three parts: 1. The Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory-II (ROCI-II) included 28 questions measuring 5 CMS; 2. The Emotional Quotient Self-Assessment Checklist (EQSAC) included 30 questions measuring 6 domains of emotional intelligence (EI); and 3. Demographic questions. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, correlational statistics and multiple linear regression. RESULTS: The responses from 92 participants were analysed. Most dental hygiene participants had EI scores in the moderate range and mainly used the collaborative and compromising CMS. Total EI scores were significant predictors of collaborative, compromising, accommodating and competing CMS. CONCLUSION: Improving EI scores may contribute to the increased use of the collaborative and compromising CMS in dental hygiene education.

OBJECTIVES: For the dental hygiene profession, a need exists to engage students in research experiences as undergraduate students to foster interest in research and improve the implementation of evidence-based practice. The purpose was to explore the relationships between original research experiences and evidence-based practice among undergraduate dental hygiene students. METHODS: This quantitative survey research study of undergraduate dental hygiene students in the USA was conducted in 2021. Original research experience was measured using the Wessex Research Network (WReN) spider instrument and evidence-based practice was measured using the Knowledge, Attitudes, Access and Confidence Evaluation (KACE) instrument. Invitation e-mails were sent to the directors of US entry-level dental hygiene programs to forward the survey e-mail message to students in the last semester of their dental hygiene programs. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. RESULTS: A total of 128 responses were analysed. The foundational knowledge domain of research experience was found to be a significant predictor of evidence-based practice and the mediators of evidence-based knowledge, evidence-based attitudes, evidence-based access and evidence-based confidence. CONCLUSION: Research experience was found to be a significant predictor of Evidence-Based Practice. Engaging undergraduate dental hygiene students in research opportunities may prepare students for the clinical application of evidence-based practice and original research projects.

PURPOSE: Sleep medicine is a rapidly growing field of Medicine globally. However, studies are lacking on the knowledge of Nigerian medical and dental students on sleep and the different types of sleep disorders. Thus, we assessed the knowledge, interest and awareness of Nigerian medical and dental students about sleep medicine. We also determined the factors associated with sleep knowledge among the medical and dental students. METHODS: We conducted this cross-sectional study from June to September 2021, among medical students at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. The students' knowledge of sleep was assessed with the Assessment of Sleep Knowledge in Medical Education (ASKME) survey. The participants were classified as having low or high scores based on the proportion who gave a correct answer to 60% of the questions. RESULTS: Among the 488 students who completed the questionnaire, there was a male preponderance (55%). About three-quarters of the respondents (376, 77%) had a low sleep knowledge score. Age, year of study, and awareness about sleep medicine were the predictors of sleep knowledge. CONCLUSION: A significant proportion of the medical students had poor sleep knowledge scores. There is a need to incorporate teaching sleep medicine in the curriculum of medical students early in their training.

BACKGROUND: Health professionals are known to use various combinations of knowledge and skills, such as critical thinking, clinical reasoning, clinical judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making, in conducting clinical practice. Clinical reasoning development is influenced by knowledge and experience, the more knowledge and experience, the more sophisticated clinical reasoning will be. However, clinical reasoning research in dentistry shows varying results . AIMS: This study aims to observe the clinical reasoning pattern of undergraduate dental students when solving oral health problems, and their accordance with their knowledge acquisition. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This qualitative study employed the think-aloud method and the result was assessed through verbal protocol analyses. Five respondents from final year dental undergraduate students were agreed to participate. A unique hypothetical clinical scenario was used as a trigger. The audio data were transcribed, interpreted, and categorized as a clinical reasoning pattern; and the concept maps created were assessed by a Structure of Learning Outcomes (SOLO) taxonomy as knowledge acquisition. RESULTS: Observations on clinical reasoning patterns and the level of knowledge acquisition in five undergraduate dental students showed varying results. They applied clinical reasoning patterns according to their knowledge acquisition during didactical phase. Learners with inadequate knowledge relied on guessing, meanwhile learners with adequate knowledge applied more sophisticated reasoning pattern when solving problems. CONCLUSIONS: Various problem-solving strategies were encountered in this study, which corresponded to the level of knowledge acquisition. Dental institutions must set minimum standards regarding the acquisition of conceptual knowledge accompanied by improvement of clinical reasoning skills, as well as refinement of knowledge and procedural skills.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, dental schools are underpinned by approved competency frameworks or competency statements developed for specific contexts or countries. Literature are replete with competencies required and assessed within this frameworks however limited literature that guides the incorporation of competencies and implementation of the competencies related to the competency framework in dental curricula. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review design was used. The research question addressed for this systematic review was: What are the strategies used to develop core competencies undergraduate dental curricula? Databases included in the searches were: MEDLINE(ebscoHost), Science Direct, MEDLINE(Pubmed), Wiley Online Library, ERIC. A meta-synthesis analysis consisting of a descriptive meta-synthesis to critically analyse and discuss emerging themes from the findings of the six included studies were completed. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Strategies used to develop core competencies were divided into four components namely organizational structure, faculty development, teaching strategies and assessment strategies. To consider a holistic approach to develop core competencies, changes in the organizational structure needs to be in place first. With the appropriate organizational structure in place, faculty development to implement competency strategies would be more supported and feasible. From the findings of the included articles, faculty development regarding teaching strategies and assessment methods were considered necessary to implement core competencies in a dental curriculum. CONCLUSION: A strong relationship between the suggested implementation strategies from this systematic review findings and the multifaceted approach for the CanMEDS exist. Teaching and assessments, faculty development strategies are common strategies. Surprisingly, organisational structure changes were not included as implementation strategy of CanMEDS.

INTRODUCTION: To outline the development and implementation of a food science and nutrition module for dental undergraduate students that provides basic knowledge and clinical skills for improving oral health outcomes and understanding their importance for overall health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Interdisciplinary discussions with professionals with expertise in food science and nutrition, including dentists, dietitians and nutritionists, were held to agree on core subject areas in line with the evidence base. The module was delivered online to 2nd-year dental students due to COVID-19 restrictions. Students completed an online evaluation on completing the module. Final examination consisted of one essay question. RESULTS: Subject areas and learning outcomes were derived from current and previous approaches to curriculum development. A total of 14 prerecorded lectures, including healthy eating guidelines, dietary assessment, specific oral effects of diet and food constituents were delivered and tutorials provided. The evaluation survey had a 90% (n = 39/43) response rate. A majority indicated that the course was "interesting," "worth doing" (59%) and "provided a good evidence base to understand nutrition and oral health" (87%). Nearly all students (92%) agreed that the course was "sufficiently structured to allow understanding of the key topics" and that "a good understanding of nutrition is important for a dentist" (95%). CONCLUSION: A food science and nutrition module developed by a multidisciplinary team enabled dental students to gain an understanding of the role of diet in oral and overall health. The module facilitated the development of skills that enable students to utilise dietary assessment techniques and promote dietary interventions beneficial to oral health. The approach taken may act as a template for other institutions.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence-based dental practice provides patient-centred, compatible and efficient interventions and forms the basis for health profession education. So far, there is a paucity of data about Malaysian undergraduate dental education and the role of evidence-based dentistry in it. The current research aimed to study the level of knowledge, attitude, practice and confidence of dental undergraduate students in Malaysia towards evidence-based dental practice. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included final-year undergraduate dental students (N = 645) who completed a pre-tested self-administered questionnaire that analysed the domains of perceived knowledge, practice, critical appraisal and attitude towards evidence-based dentistry. We further explored the association between these domains with the type of curriculum, sex, prior research experience and EBD training. RESULTS: A total of (n = 526) students participated (response rate of 81.55%). About 92% knew about evidence-based dentistry. Whilst 58% had undergone formal training in evidence-based dentistry, 90% of the respondents showed an overall positive attitude towards evidence-based dentistry. However, only 45% of them practised it most of the time. Schools with an integrated curriculum showed more willingness and practised evidence-based dentistry more frequently (p < 0.001). More than 50% of the participants rated their confidence in appraisal as moderate. CONCLUSION: Our findings revealed that Malaysian dental undergraduate students who are well aware of evidence-based dentistry displayed a positive attitude towards it. The type of dental curriculum had a significant association with practice and attitude towards evidence-based dental knowledge and practice.

OBJECTIVE: Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) are tasks that a person who is qualified or is in the process to be credentialed are allowed to engage. There are several levels of entrustment based on degrees of supervision assigned to each EPA. This paper aims to describe the process and outcome of creating EPAs; validate EPAs relevant to undergraduate dental training. METHODS: A draft set of EPA statements was developed based on the consensus of an expert panel. These were then mapped to the nationally determined minimum experience thresholds (clinical and procedural experiences/competencies) and aligned to task-based instructional strategy. The EPAs were validated to improve the relevance by using a criterion-based rubric. RESULTS: An end-to-end process workflow led to the development of an EPA-based educational framework to bridge the gaps in the curriculum. The process identified a total of 41 EPAs and out of which, 10 EPAs were notated as core EPAs and will be subjected to structured workplace-based assessment complying to the national standards. The validation exercise rated core EPAs with an overall score matching close to the cut-off of 4.07 (Equal rubric). CONCLUSION: The end-to-end process workflow provided the opportunity to elaborate a structured process for the development of EPAs for undergraduate dental education. As validation is a continuous process, feedback from implementation will inform the next steps.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate and validate the educational effectiveness of a job shadowing class as a dental teaching programme for preclinical dental students through a questionnaire that assessed related student perceptions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 124 preclinical (second year) dental students at Tokushima University participated in job shadowing placements from 2017 to 2019. Each student observed dental practice or surgery for 1 day in the university hospital. After shadowing, the students were requested to fill out a nine-item questionnaire based on a five-point scale. The first analysis was performed to calculate the correlation for each item. Furthermore, regression analysis for the categorical data was performed to show the relationship between eight questions (Items 1-8) and one question (Item 9: comprehensive evaluation). Next, factor analysis was performed to determine students' perceptions regarding the shadowing class. RESULTS: Ninety-eight students (response rate: 79%) completed the questionnaire. There was a strong relationship amongst Items 1, 8 and 9 ("interested in dentistry as a job," "learning motivation" and "comprehensive evaluation" respectively) based on the results of the correlation and regression analysis. The factor analysis led to three student perceptions as latent factors, namely, "Interesting," "Self-awareness" and "Future Goal," which had a relatively close inter-factor correlation (0.465-0.772). CONCLUSION: The finding suggests that job shadowing may increase a students' interest in a dentistry career at an early stage of their education and learning motivation, along with generating self-awareness. This programme may present possible educational effectiveness in dental education.

Objective: To determine the current trends in complete denture education in undergraduate dental colleges. METHODS: The survey-based study was conducted in April and May 2020 at undergraduate dental colleges of Pakistan, and comprised heads of the Prosthodontics Department at all dental colleges across Pakistan having at least one batch of final year dental students. Data was collected using an online predesigned questionnaire that explored theoretical and practical teaching patterns of complete denture prosthodontics in the undergraduate years, and the materials and practices of students when constructing complete dentures in the clinics. The participants were given the option of choosing more than one option where needed. Data was analysed using SPSS 23. RESULTS: Of the 49 subjects approached, 40(81.6%) returned the forms duly filled; 11(27.5%) from public-sector institutions and 29(72.5%) from the private sector. There were 26(65%) institutions which required that their undergraduate students fabricate 2-4 conventional complete dentures. In all 40(100%) colleges, faculty gave live clinical demonstrations before students fabricated conventional complete dentures in the outpatient departments. Teaching strategy included small group discussions in 25(62.5%) institutions. Green stick 40(100%), zinc oxide eugenol 40(100%) and impression compound 39(97.2%) were the materials of choice for various steps of impression making. In all the 40(100%) institutions, students fabricated conventional complete dentures during their prosthodontics rotation. Immediate, copy and overdentures were constructed by students in 8(20%), 3(7.5%) and 8(20%) institutions, respectively. Conclusion: Majority of the dental schools used similar impression materials and techniques for fabricating conventional complete dentures. Didactic teaching of conventional and unconventional complete dentures was being carried out at a huge majority of the dental institutions studied.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: To assess the procedural errors committed by undergraduate students at RAK College of Dental Sciences, during root canal treatments and the factors associated with these errors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 180 self-administered questionnaires were distributed, each comprising 26 questions, among 4th and 5th-year students. Participants were requested to report their endodontic mishaps based on feedback from their supervisors. The questionnaire assessed the frequency and types of procedural errors, considering patient, operator, and tooth-related factors. Data were collected tabulated and analyzed using the Chi-square test. RESULTS: A total of 124 root canal-treated teeth exhibiting iatrogenic errors done by students were assessed. Out of which, 53% were performed by 5th-year students, and 69% were conducted by female operators. About 62% of errors occurred in the upper teeth and 68% in the posterior teeth. The most prevalent errors during the rubber dam isolation step were soft tissue trauma (21%) and isolation leakage (20%), significantly associated with limited mouth opening, excessive salivation, and tooth malalignment (p < 0.05). Apical blockage (15%) emerged as the most frequent error during instrumentation phase, showing a significant association with canal dimension and curvature (p < 0.05). For access cavity and obturation phases, under-extended cavity (9%), and under-extended filling (11%) were the most reported errors, respectively. CONCLUSION: Tooth isolation emerges as a particularly challenging aspect for dental students, particularly when dealing with patients exhibiting limited mouth opening and excessive salivation. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Clinical instructors should caution the undergraduates about the heightened risk of endodontic procedural errors when dealing with patients exhibiting limited mouth opening, excessive salivation, tooth misalignment, and narrow canals. Addressing these challenges is crucial for enhancing the proficiency of undergraduate students in performing successful root canal treatments. Objective: The study aimed to evaluate undergraduate dental students' self-perceived confidence in carrying out Endodontic procedures and correlating it with their performance in Endodontic clinics. Methods: The correlational study was conducted on fifth year dental students at Qassim University, Saudi Arabia. The self-perceived confidence of students was assessed by using Endodontic Self-Perceived Confidence Scale (ESCS). The students' endodontic clinical performance scores were obtained from the department head. Data were analyzed by IBM SPSS-23.0. Descriptive statistics were recorded as percentages, frequencies, and mean. Chi-square test was used for gender-wise comparison of all items of ESCS, Student t-test was used for comparing means and Pearson correlation coefficient was utilized for exploring correlation. Results: Over all response rate was 91.8%. Students exhibited the highest confidence level for achieving rubber dam isolation (4.57±0.66) while the lowest confidence level was documented for the treatment of teeth with immature apices (2.82±0.95). The mean self-confidence score of male students on ESCS was higher than the female students (P-value=0.18). However, mean endodontic clinic score of female students was significantly higher than the male students (P-value=0.02). The insignificant correlation was noted between the students' mean confidence scores and endodontic clinical performance scores (P-value=0.82). Conclusions: The insignificant correlation between self-perceived confidence and clinic scores raises significant caveats for utilizing the self-assessment in the aforementioned group. Hence, the students should be adequately trained in self-assessment to prepare them for lifetime learning. Additionally, clinical instructors by creating a supportive learning environment should help students to deal with their shortcomings.

BACKGROUND: Currently, there is a lack of data relating to dental practitioners' habits with clinical occlusal assessment and the application of practical techniques in occlusion. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate habits with clinical occlusal assessment and the practical application of established concepts in occlusion amongst a cohort of international dentists. METHODS: A piloted questionnaire with 20 statements was distributed by 5 recruiters. The recruiters were based in Malta (1), South Africa (1), Malaysia (1) and the UK (2). Outcomes were analysed using descriptives, chi-squared and Fisher's exact test. All the analyses were carried out in Stata, Version 12. Significance was inferred at p < .05. RESULTS: Four hundred thirty-five completed responses were included in the sample (response rate, 70.7%). Overall, high levels of agreement were reported with the provision of single-unit crown and onlay restorations (78.8%) and bridge prostheses (up to 3 units, 77.9%), respectively. One-third (33.6%) agreed to observing dynamic occlusal relationships during an adult patient dental examination, 40.7% reported using articulators for crown and bridge cases, and 25.1% agreed to taking facebow records. Under half (47.3%) of the dentists expressed dissatisfaction with their undergraduate training in occlusion, with no significant association with the variables of the number of years of experience, the country of practice or being in general practice (p ≥ .226). CONCLUSION: The results indicate a disparity between traditionally taught and applied concepts in clinical occlusion and the undertaking of occlusal assessments and the management of occlusion in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the provision of oral health care worldwide, prompting the discussion of preparedness. This study aimed to perform an initial appraisal of the usability, spatial representation, and clarity of a newly developed preparedness model from the perspective of senior undergraduate dental students at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, enrolled in the 2020-21 academic year. Answers were analyzed thematically via an inductive coding process between March and June 2021. RESULTS: All the 111 students in years 3 (#55) and 4 (#56) appraised the preparedness model, generating more than 200 pages of text. Four main themes were identified across the essays: streamlined depiction, information-based approach, adaptability to an ever-changing situation, and room for improvement. Although the majority of students appraised the model as being useful in fostering information-seeking behaviour, few students disagreed with the model's portrayal and made further suggestions. CONCLUSIONS: Preparedness models can better guide oral health care providers during a health crisis such as a pandemic. The recently developed preparedness model was appraised as useful by senior undergraduate dental students, although alternative portrayals of the model were suggested. A comprehensive assessment of the newly developed model (and of its variations) is warranted to better support oral health care service delivery during a pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: To analyse the presence and characteristics of curricular components related to management, entrepreneurship, leadership and marketing as part of the structure and teaching methods of undergraduate courses in dentistry in Brazil. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is an observational study that used the Ministry of Education's Undergraduate Course Accreditation Platform, which included 424 undergraduate courses in Dentistry on the last date of collection (August 31 2019). The following items were analysed as follows: the existence of curricular components in relation to the proposed themes, the most recurring denominations of curricular components, minimum and maximum workload, mandatory/optional classification, theoretical/practical teaching condition and in which year the curricular components were inserted. RESULTS: 367/424 (86.6%) of dentistry courses in Brazil included at least one of the topics: management, entrepreneurship, leadership and marketing curricular components in their curriculum, whilst 57/424 (13.4%) did not have these curricular components in their curricular structure. The most frequent names were "Management" 99 (45.21%) and "Entrepreneurship" 80 (36.5%). There was a predominance of the "theoretical method" and the number of hours varied considerably, with the most common course hours between 40 and 60 h. The majority of curricular components were inserted in the third to fifth year and offered on a compulsory basis. CONCLUSION: Most curricular matrices of dentistry courses in Brazil had components related to the topics studied. However, due to the variety of curricular components' names, hours, periods of courses and different teaching methodologies, there is a need to redesign the teaching and learning process, defining educational and evaluation models with common curricular components.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical audit is a quality improvement process that seeks to improve patient care and outcomes through the systematic review of care against explicit criteria and the implementation of change. The objective of this audit was to evaluate the quality of orthodontic chart documentation by dental undergraduates against established guidelines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An audit checklist with 13 criteria for good documentation was adapted from guidelines proposed by the American Association of Orthodontists and British Orthodontic Society. Orthodontic chart documentation in 103 removable appliance therapy patients under 4th and 5th year dental undergraduates' care was retrieved from the electronic record of the University dental clinic and audited. The audit exercise explored in detail the thirteen criteria for good documentation and eight assessment attributes of the first criterion, namely, basic orthodontic examination. The level of compliance was measured as the percentage records meeting the criteria. The data were statistically analysed using SPSS 26.0 (SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). RESULTS: There was no complete compliance for any of the criteria. Thirty-five (33.9%) patient charts reported basic orthodontic examination documentation adequately. Compliance was the highest for documentation of treatment modality (77.6%), appliance delivery encounters (77.6%), and appliance adjustment appointments (83.5%). About 51.4% of the 68 patient charts (treatment of 35 patients of the total 103 were in the progress stage) stated adequately the outcome of treatment. Only 22% of the 68 patient charts had the details for retention protocol. There was statistically significant difference in chart documentation between male and female students for basic orthodontic assessment and appliance delivery and patient instructions attributes. CONCLUSION: The clinical audit demonstrated poor compliance with the criteria for orthodontic chart documentation. The audit should be repeated after the provision of learning opportunities and self-critical analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Reflecting multicultural society, the diversity of the healthcare professional students' ethnicities and cultures is promoted around the world. However, most of the healthcare professional education in Japan had been targeted mainly at students who follow the Japanese language and culture. The aim of this study is to clarify what Japanese dental students have culturally experienced and how they developed intercultural competence during their school life with international dental students in Japan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 18 of the sixth-grade students in standard Japanese undergraduate dental programmes who shared required classes in Japan with non-Japanese-speaking international dental students in preclinical programmes. Based on the qualitative analysis of the interviews, we administered a questionnaire survey to 82 dental trainees (the seventh grade) in clinical training programmes who just graduated from various Japanese dental schools. Then, the answers of the questionnaire were statically analysed. RESULTS: The interview identified a total of 37 constituent elements regarding "students' attitudes and experiences in school days" and "perceptions and motivations." Analysis of the questionnaire showed that the group experiencing a learning environment with international students had various communication with and respect for their various classmates and had the ambition to develop themselves. Especially, the participants who had international experiences both in and out of classrooms showed more active attitude on intercultural communication. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, for Japanese dental students, daily contact with international students gave direct and indirect cross-cultural experiences and recognitions. In particular, the Japanese students were stimulated active perceptions. The findings of this study can be used for future discussion about the cross-cultural education and collaboration of healthcare professionals not only within Japan but also around the world.
