RESUMO

The desert vipers of the genus Cerastes are a small clade of medically important venomous snakes within the family Viperidae. According to published morphological and molecular studies, the group is comprised by four species: two morphologically similar and phylogenetically sister taxa, the African horned viper (Cerastes cerastes) and the Arabian horned viper (Cerastes gasperettii); a more distantly related species, the Saharan sand viper (Cerastes vipera), and the enigmatic Böhme's sand viper (Cerastes boehmei), only known from a single specimen in captivity allegedly captured in Central Tunisia. In this study, we sequenced one mitochondrial marker (COI) as well as genome-wide data (ddRAD sequencing) from 28 and 41 samples, respectively, covering the entire distribution range of the genus to explore the population genomics, phylogenomic relationships and introgression patterns within the genus Cerastes. Additionally, and to provide insights into the mode of diversification of the group, we carried out niche overlap analyses considering climatic and habitat variables. Both nuclear phylogenomic reconstructions and population structure analyses have unveiled an unexpected evolutionary history for the genus Cerastes, which sharply contradicts the morphological similarities and previously published mitochondrial approaches. Cerastes cerastes and C. vipera are recovered as sister taxa whilst C. gasperettii is a sister taxon to the clade formed by these two species. We found a relatively high niche overlap (OI > 0.7) in both climatic and habitat variables between C. cerastes and C. vipera, contradicting a potential scenario of sympatric speciation. These results are in line with the introgression found between the northwestern African populations of C. cerastes and C. vipera. Finally, our genomic data confirms the existence of a lineage of C. cerastes in Arabia. All these results highlight the importance of genome-wide data over few genetic markers to study the evolutionary history of species.

The ability of females to store sperm for extended periods in their reproductive tracts (termed long-term sperm storage, LTSS) has been reported across a diversity of vertebrate taxa. The evolutionary, ecological, and physiological significance of LTSS is wide-ranging and includes the ability to produce offspring when mates may be temporally scarce by way of decoupling copulation from ovulation, inbreeding avoidance, and the generation and maintenance of genetic diversity in progeny. Among vertebrate lineages, nonavian reptiles exhibit a remarkable capacity for LTSS, with the production of viable offspring reported after periods exceeding 6 years since prior contact with a potential mate. Given that female reptiles are able to store viable sperm for prolonged periods, it is important to disentangle LTSS from that of facultative parthenogenesis (FP), a reproductive trait which appears widespread among all reptile lineages. The implications of this distinction are particularly important in the context of the development and management of captive breeding programs. To accurately determine between the two reproductive strategies, genomic screening is highly recommended. Following a period of isolation for 13 months from a potential male mate, a female Himalayan Mountain Pitviper (Ovophis monticola) produced a clutch of three male offspring. Here, through genome-scale analyses of the female and her progeny, we document the first record of LTSS in this genus and exclude FP as the alternative hypothesis.

Rattlesnakes play important roles in their ecosystems by regulating prey populations, are involved in complex coevolutionary dynamics with their prey, and exhibit a variety of unusual adaptations, including maternal care, heat-sensing pit organs, hinged fangs, and medically-significant venoms. The western rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus) is one of the widest ranging rattlesnake species, with a distribution from British Columbia, where it is listed as threatened, to Baja California and east across the Great Basin to western Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. Here, we report a new reference genome assembly for one of six currently recognized subspecies, C. oreganus helleri, as part of the California Conservation Genomics Project (CCGP). Consistent with the reference genomic sequencing strategy of the CCGP, we used Pacific Biosciences HiFi long reads and Hi-C chromatin-proximity sequencing technology to produce a de novo assembled genome. The assembly comprises a total of 698 scaffolds spanning 1,564,812,557 base pairs, has a contig N50 of 64.7 Mb, a scaffold N50 of 110.8 Mb, and BUSCO complete score of 90.5%. This reference genome will be valuable for studies on the genomic basis of venom evolution and variation within Crotalus, in resolving the taxonomy of C. oreganus and its relatives, and for the conservation and management of rattlesnakes in general.

Breeding snakes in captivity has become more and more relevant due not only to the growing interest on their venoms but also to the increasing number of endangered species worldwide. Unfortunately, studies on the formation of germplasm banks for these reptiles do not follow the same pace, and literature on sperm cryopreservation remains in its infancy when compared to other taxa. Herein, we first validated a sperm-egg binding assay (using chicken egg perivitelline membrane - EPM) and some nonfluorescent staining techniques for semen analysis of two pit viper genera (Bothrops and Crotalus), and then we investigated the protective effects of dimethylacetamide (DMA), dimethylformamide (DMF), and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) at different concentrations (3, 6 and 12%) throughout the freezing process in five species of lancehead and one of rattlesnake. Our validation process showed high correlations among sperm functional tests (including sperm-binding to EPM) and motion parameters. A total of 166 fresh ejaculates were acquired from 233 collection attempts, and 63.9% of these samples exhibited minimal motility for freezing (≥20%). During cryopreservation we observed that post-thaw motility and quality was improved by higher levels of cryoprotectants (CPA), regardless the CPA type. Lower concentrations of CPA were less harmful to sperm motility and progressive motility following the equilibrium phase, but were ineffective in protecting these cells from the freeze-thaw cycle. Likewise, higher CPA concentrations increased post-thaw integrity of the acrosome and plasma membrane for most species, except for rattlesnakes in which only 12% DMSO produced better outcomes.

Saw-scaled or carpet vipers (genus Echis) are considered to cause a higher global snakebite mortality than any other snake. Echis carinatus sochureki (ECS) is a widely distributed snake species, also found across the thirteen provinces of Iran, where it is assumed to be responsible for the most snakebite envenomings. Here, we collected the Iranian specimens of ECS from three different geographically distinct populations, investigated food habits, and performed toxicity assessment and venom proteome profiling to better understand saw-scaled viper life. Our results show that the prey items most commonly found in all populations were arthropods, with scorpions from the family Buthidae particularly well represented. LD50 (median lethal dose) values of the crude venom demonstrate highly comparable venom toxicities in mammals. Consistent with this finding, venom characterization via top-down and bottom-up proteomics, applied to both crude venoms and size-exclusion chromatographic fractions, revealed highly comparable venom compositions among the different populations. By combining all proteomics data, we identified 22 protein families from 102 liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) raw files, including the most abundant snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs, 29-34%); phospholipase A2 (PLA2s, 26-31%); snake venom serine proteinases (SVSPs, 11-12%); l-amino acid oxidases (LAOs, 8-11%), C-type lectins/lectin-like (CTLs, 7-9%) protein families, and many newly detected ones, e.g., renin-like aspartic proteases (RLAPs), fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerases (PPIs), and venom vasodilator peptides (VVPs). Furthermore, we identified and characterized methylated, acetylated, and oxidized proteoforms relating to the PLA2 and disintegrin toxin families and the site of their modifications. It thus seems that post-translational modifications (PTMs) of toxins, particularly target lysine residues, may play an essential role in the structural and functional properties of venom proteins and might be able to influence the therapeutic response of antivenoms, to be investigated in future studies.

Bites by venomous snakes can cause fatal systemic and coagulation disorders. Rare complications, such as compartment syndrome and hemoperitoneum, may also require surgical intervention. Here, we describe our experience with an unusual case of snakebite-induced delayed splenic rupture. A 54-y-old male with no specific medical history visited a local hospital for a bite by an unidentified snake. He had been bitten on the left thumb and was administered antivenom. He was discharged from the local hospital after 3 d when his symptoms had improved. However, he revisited our emergency medical center 2 d later, reporting dizziness with diaphoresis. Focused abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed large amounts of intraperitoneal fluid collection and hemoperitoneum with splenic rupture, respectively. The patient underwent immediate blood transfusion and received antivenom treatment in our emergency department and, subsequently, emergency splenectomy. Histopathologic findings at the time of surgery revealed multifocal lacerations on the external surface of the spleen, with fresh hemorrhage. He recovered 7 d after surgery without any complication.

Herein, we report on the venom proteome of Vipera anatolica senliki, a recently discovered and hitherto unexplored subspecies of the critically endangered Anatolian meadow viper endemic to the Antalya Province of Turkey. Integrative venomics, including venom gland transcriptomics as well as complementary bottom-up and top-down proteomics analyses, were applied to fully characterize the venom of V. a. senliki. Furthermore, the classical top-down venomics approach was extended to elucidate the venom proteome by an alternative in-source decay (ISD) proteomics workflow using the reducing matrix 1,5-diaminonaphthalene. Top-down ISD proteomics allows for disulfide bond counting and effective de novo sequencing-based identification of high-molecular-weight venom constituents, both of which are difficult to achieve by commonly established top-down approaches. Venom gland transcriptome analysis identified 96 toxin transcript annotations from 18 toxin families. Relative quantitative snake venomics revealed snake venom metalloproteinases (42.9%) as the most abundant protein family, followed by several less dominant toxin families. Online mass profiling and top-down venomics provide a detailed insight into the venom proteome of V. a. senliki and facilitate a comparative analysis of venom variability for the closely related subspecies, Vipera anatolica anatolica.

Bites by viperid snakes belonging to Bothrops genus produce fast and intense local edema, inflammation, bleeding and myonecrosis. In this study, we investigated the role of Myogenic Regulatory Factors (MRFs: MyoD; Myog), negatively regulated by GDF-8 (Myostatin), and ubiquitin-proteasome system pathway (UPS: MuRF-1; Fbx-32) in gastrocnemius muscle regeneration after Bothrops jararacussu snake venom (Bjussu) or its isolated phospholipase A2 myotoxins, BthTx-I (Lys-49 PLA2) and BthTx-II (Asp-49 PLA2) injection. Male Swiss mice received a single intra-gastrocnemius injection of crude Bjussu, at a dose/volume of 0.83 mg/kg/20 µl, and BthTx-I or BthTx-II, at a dose/volume of 2.5 mg/kg/20 µl. Control mice (Sham) received an injection of sterile saline solution (NaCl 0.9%; 20 µl). At 24, 48, 72 and 96 h post injection, right gastrocnemius was collected for protein expression analyses. Based on the temporal expressional dynamics of MyoD, Myog and GDF-8/Myostatin, it was possible to propose that the myogenesis pathway was impacted most badly by BthTx-II followed by BthTx-I and lastly by B. jararacussu venom, thus suggesting that catalytic activity has likely inhibitory role on the satellite cells-mediated reparative myogenesis pathway. Inversely, the catalytic activity seems to be not a determinant for the activation of proteins ubiquitination by MuRF-1 and Fbx-32/Atrogin-1 E3 proteasome ligases, given proteolysis pathway through UPS was activated neither after Bjussu, nor after BthTx-II, but just after the catalytically-inactive BthTx-I Lys-49 PLA2-homologue exposure. The findings of this study disclose interesting perspective for further mechanistic studies about pathways that take part in the atrophy and repair after permanent damage induced by bothropic snakebites.

Snakebites are a neglected and underestimated global health hazard. In the Brazilian Amazon, Bothrops snakebites are the most prevalent and may lead to severe complications. Here we describe a severe case of Bothrops atrox snakebite that, owing to delayed medical assistance, presented with renal and respiratory failure, compartment syndrome, and tissue necrosis. After several fasciotomy surgeries, the patient survived; however, he showed significant functional disability. Prompt management of snake envenomation would aid in the early diagnosis of local and systemic complications and, consequently, would result in a better functional outcome with improved quality of life.

The objective of this case series was to describe 2 patients presenting with subarachnoid hemorrhage with hydrocephalus and hemoventricle after a snakebite caused by presumed Bothrops ssp. Both cases occurred in the municipality of Guajará (Amazonas state), Western Brazilian Amazon. Both cases featured delay in administration of serum therapy, which may have contributed to the emergence of complications such as stroke. Patient 1 was admitted to hospital 16 h after the snakebite occurred. Before receiving antivenom, testing showed the patient as having unclottable blood. She developed hemorrhagic stroke (a subarachnoid hemorrhage with hydrocephalus and hemoventricle). On the seventh day, she was discharged from hospital. Patient 2 arrived at the hospital 3 d after the snakebite occurred and presented with unclottable blood. He had a stroke (right frontoparietal hemorrhage, intraparenchymal hemorrhage already open to the ventricle) and died on the eighth day after the snakebite. Delay in seeking health care after snake envenomation can result in worse outcome.

The nose-horned viper, its nominotypical subspecies Vipera ammodytes ammodytes ( Vaa), in particular, is, medically, one of the most relevant snakes in Europe. The local and systemic clinical manifestations of poisoning by the venom of this snake are the result of the pathophysiological effects inflicted by enzymatic and nonenzymatic venom components acting, most prominently, on the blood, cardiovascular, and nerve systems. This venom is a very complex mixture of pharmacologically active proteins and peptides. To help improve the current antivenom therapy toward higher specificity and efficiency and to assist drug discovery, we have constructed, by combining transcriptomic and proteomic analyses, the most comprehensive library yet of the Vaa venom proteins and peptides. Sequence analysis of the venom gland cDNA library has revealed the presence of messages encoding 12 types of polypeptide precursors. The most abundant are those for metalloproteinase inhibitors (MPis), bradykinin-potentiating peptides (BPPs), and natriuretic peptides (NPs) (all three on a single precursor), snake C-type lectin-like proteins (snaclecs), serine proteases (SVSPs), P-II and P-III metalloproteinases (SVMPs), secreted phospholipases A2 (sPLA2s), and disintegrins (Dis). These constitute >88% of the venom transcriptome. At the protein level, 57 venom proteins belonging to 16 different protein families have been identified and, with SVSPs, sPLA2s, snaclecs, and SVMPs, comprise ∼80% of all venom proteins. Peptides detected in the venom include NPs, BPPs, and inhibitors of SVSPs and SVMPs. Of particular interest, a transcript coding for a protein similar to P-III SVMPs but lacking the MP domain was also found at the protein level in the venom. The existence of such proteins, also supported by finding similar venom gland transcripts in related snake species, has been demonstrated for the first time, justifying the proposal of a new P-IIIe subclass of ancestral SVMP precursor-derived proteins.

It makes intuitive sense that you need a sharp tool to puncture through a tough material. The typical approach to evaluating sharpness in biological puncturing tools is to treat morphological measurements as a proxy for puncture ability. However, there are multiple approaches to measuring sharpness, and the relative influence of morphology on function remains unclear. Our goal is to determine what aspects of tip morphology have the greatest impact on puncture ability, using ( a) viper fangs and ( b) engineered punches to isolate the effects of different sharpness measures. Our results indicate that tip included angle is the strongest predictor of puncture performance in both viper fangs and engineered punches. For puncture tools with small included angles, sharpness index (based on the radius of curvature) also affects puncture ability. Finally, we found that punches serve as good predictors of fang performance at small angles and sharpness index values.

OBJECTIVE: Viperidae snakes are responsible for 95 % of the bites caused by exotic-bred snakes in our country. Their envenoming may be associated with a severe acute coagulation disorder - venom-induced consumption coagulopathy (VICC). Thus, its early prediction is vital for an adequate therapy including antivenom delivery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Laboratory coagulation tests of 14 patients suffering from VICC were processed and statistically analyzed to evaluate the importance of individual parameters in the time after the bite. RESULTS: The pathological values of D-dimer (D-dim) and fibrinogen (FBG) were found to be the first indicators of VICC development, with a median time of 4.55 hours since the bite, while median values for prothrombin time and international normalized ratio (PT/INR), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and thrombin time (TT) were 5.9 h, 8.15 h, and 5.5 h, respectively. In the first samples, the values of D-dim were found to be pathologically increased in all 14 patients, while pathological levels of FBG were seen only in 11 cases. PT/INR and APTT were prolonged in 8 and 6 cases, respectively. CONCLUSION: An increase in D-dim values was found to be the first parameter signaling developing VICC in all analyzed cases (Tab. 2, Ref. 12).

The Mojave rattlesnake (Crotalus scutulatus) inhabits deserts and arid grasslands of the western United States and Mexico. Despite considerable interest in its highly toxic venom and the recognition of two subspecies, no molecular studies have characterized range-wide genetic diversity and population structure or tested species limits within C. scutulatus. We used mitochondrial DNA and thousands of nuclear loci from double-digest restriction site associated DNA sequencing to infer population genetic structure throughout the range of C. scutulatus, and to evaluate divergence times and gene flow between populations. We find strong support for several divergent mitochondrial and nuclear clades of C. scutulatus, including splits coincident with two major phylogeographic barriers: the Continental Divide and the elevational increase associated with the Central Mexican Plateau. We apply Bayesian clustering, phylogenetic inference, and coalescent-based species delimitation to our nuclear genetic data to test hypotheses of population structure. We also performed demographic analyses to test hypotheses relating to population divergence and gene flow. Collectively, our results support the existence of four distinct lineages within C. scutulatus, and genetically defined populations do not correspond with currently recognized subspecies ranges. Finally, we use approximate Bayesian computation to test hypotheses of divergence among multiple rattlesnake species groups distributed across the Continental Divide, and find evidence for co-divergence at this boundary during the mid-Pleistocene.

The Asian world is home to a multitude of venomous and dangerous snakes, which are used to induce various medical effects in the preparation of traditional snake tinctures and alcoholics, like the Japanese snake wine, named Habushu. The aim of this work was to perform the first quantitative proteomic analysis of the Protobothrops flavoviridis pit viper venom. Accordingly, the venom was analyzed by complimentary bottom-up and top-down mass spectrometry techniques. The mass spectrometry-based snake venomics approach revealed that more than half of the venom is composed of different phospholipases A2 (PLA2). The combination of this approach and an intact mass profiling led to the identification of the three main Habu PLA2s. Furthermore, nearly one-third of the total venom consists of snake venom metalloproteinases and disintegrins, and several minor represented toxin families were detected: C-type lectin-like proteins (CTL), cysteine-rich secretory proteins (CRISP), snake venom serine proteases (svSP), l-amino acid oxidases (LAAO), phosphodiesterase (PDE) and 5'-nucleotidase. Finally, the venom of P. flavoviridis contains certain bradykinin-potentiating peptides and related peptides, like the svMP inhibitors, pEKW, pEQW, pEEW and pENW. In preliminary MTT cytotoxicity assays, the highest cancerous-cytotoxicity of crude venom was measured against human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells and shows disintegrin-like effects in some fractions.

BACKGROUND: Peptide and protein toxins are essential tools to dissect and probe the biology of their target receptors. Venoms target vital physiological processes to evoke pain. Snake venoms contain various factors with the ability to evoke, enhance and sustain pain sensation. While a number of venom-derived toxins were shown to directly target TRPV1 channels expressed on somatosensory nerve terminals to evoke pain response, such toxins were yet to be identified in snake venoms. METHODS: We screened Echis coloratus saw-scaled viper venom's protein fractions isolated by reversed phase HPLC for their ability to activate TRPV1 channels. To this end, we employed heterologous systems to analyze TRPV1 and NGF pathways by imaging and electrophysiology, combined with molecular biology, biochemical, and pharmacological tools. RESULTS: We identified TRPV1 activating proteins in the venom of Echis coloratus that produce a channel-dependent increase in intracellular calcium and outwardly rectifying currents in neurons and heterologous systems. Interestingly, channel activation was not mediated by any of its known toxin binding sites. Moreover, although NGF neurotropic activity was detected in this venom, TRPV1 activation was independent of NGF receptors. CONCLUSIONS: Echis coloratus venom contains proteins with the ability to directly activate TRPV1. This activity is independent of the NGF pathway and is not mediated by known TRPV1 toxins' binding sites. GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE: Our results could facilitate the discovery of new toxins targeting TRPV1 to enhance current understanding of this receptor activation mechanism. Furthermore, the findings of this study provide insight into the mechanism through which snakes' venom elicit pain.

Bothropic venom contains a range of biologically active substances capable of causing severe local and systemic envenoming symptomatology within its victims. The snake anti-venom is effective against systemic effects but has no neutralizing effect against the fast developing local effects. Herein, mice gastrocnemius injected with Bothrops moojeni venom (40 µg/kg) or saline solution were irradiated with HeNe (632.8 nm) and GaAs (904 nm) lasers (daily energy density of 4 J/cm2; 0.03/0.21 power density; 0.07/0.16 spot size; 1.2/0.04 total energy, 1 cm off contact, for HeNe and GaAs lasers, respectively) and euthanized in periods ranging from 3 h to 21 days. Blood biochemistry for creatine kinase (CK), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), acid phosphatase (AP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), aspartate transaminase (AST), and myoglobin and histopathological analysis, for assessing the degree of myonecrosis and regeneration of gastrocnemius, were done at every time interval. GaAs laser promoted faster photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) effects, and the GaAs group exhibited a better clinical outcome than the HeNe group. Within the GaAs group, the serum levels of CK, LDH, AP, AST, and myoglobin, which were increased by the physiological effects of the venom, were reduced to initial baseline before snake envenomation in less time than those irradiated by the HeNe laser. However, the group receiving irradiation from the HeNe laser returned the levels of ALP activity to baseline faster than those of the GaAs group. Histopathological analysis revealed enhanced muscle regeneration in mice groups treated with both lasers. PBM promoted by GaAs and HeNe showed well-developed centrally nucleate regenerating cells and an increased number of newly formed blood vessels when compared to unirradiated muscle. We therefore suggest that GaAs had the best outcomes likely derived from a deeper penetrating longer wavelength. We conclude that PMBT is a promising, non-invasive approach to be further tested in pre-clinical studies with a goal to further its clinical use in skeletal muscle recovery in snakebite victims.

Snake venom toxins are related not only in detention, death and the promotion of initial digestion of prey but also due to their different biochemical, structural and pharmacological effects they can result in new drugs. Among these toxins snake venom serine proteases (SVSPs) should be highlighted because they are responsible for inducing changes in physiological functions such as blood coagulation, fibrinolysis, and platelet aggregation. This article presents the first serine protease (SP) isolated from Bothrops brazili: BbrzSP-32. The new SP showed 36 kDa of relative molecular mass and its absolute mass was confirmed by mass spectrometry as 32,520 Da. It presents 79.48% identity when compared to other SVSPs and was able to degrade the α-chain of fibrinogen, in in vitro models, because of this it is considered a SVTLE-A. It showed dose-dependent activity in the process of degradation of fibrin networks demonstrating greater specificity for this activity when compared to its thrombolytic action. BbrzSP-32 demonstrated proteolytic activity on gelatin and chromogenic substrates for serine proteases and thrombin-like enzymes (S-2288 and S-2238 respectively), besides having coagulant activity on human plasma. After pre-incubation with PMSF and benzamidine the coagulant and proteolytic activities on the S-2288 and S-2238 substrates were reduced. BbrzSP-32 shows stability against pH and temperature variations, demonstrating optimum activity between 30 and 40 °C and in the pH range 7.5 to 8.5. A new SP with potential biotechnological application was isolated.

We used mitochondrial DNA sequence data from 151 individuals to estimate population genetic structure across the range of the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox), a widely distributed North American pit viper. We also tested hypotheses of population structure using double-digest restriction site associated DNA (ddRADseq) data, incorporating thousands of nuclear genome-wide SNPs from 42 individuals. We found strong mitochondrial support for a deep divergence between eastern and western C. atrox populations, and subsequent intermixing of these populations in the Inter-Pecos region of the United States and Mexico. Our nuclear RADseq data also identify these two distinct lineages of C. atrox, and provide evidence for nuclear admixture of eastern and western alleles across a broad geographic region. We identified contrasting patterns of mitochondrial and nuclear genetic variation across this genetic fusion zone that indicate partially restricted patterns of gene flow, which may be due to either pre- or post-zygotic isolating mechanisms. The failure of these two lineages to maintain complete genetic isolation, and evidence for partially-restricted gene flow, imply that these lineages were in the early stages of speciation prior to secondary contact.

Digesting snakes experience massive increases in metabolism that can last for many days and are accompanied by adjustments in the oxygen transport cascade. Accordingly, we examined the oxygen-binding properties of the blood in the South American rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus terrificus) during fasting and 24 and 48h after the snakes have ingested a rodent meal corresponding to 15% (±2%) of its own body mass. In general, oxygen-hemoglobin (Hb-O2) affinity was significantly increased 24h post-feeding, and then returned toward fasting values within 48h post-feeding. Content of organic phosphates ([NTP] and [NTP]/[Hb]), hemoglobin cooperativity (Hill's n), and Bohr Effect (ΔlogP50/ΔpH) were not affected by feeding. The postprandial increase in Hb-O2 affinity in the South American rattlesnake can be almost entirely ascribed by the moderate alkaline tide that follows meal ingestion. In general, digesting snakes were able to regulate blood metabolites at quite constant levels (e.g., plasma osmolality, lactate, glucose, and total protein levels). The level of circulating lipids, however, was considerably increased, which may be related to their mobilization, since lipids are known to be incorporated by the enterocytes after snakes have fed. In conclusion, our results indicate that the exceptional metabolic increment exhibited by C. d. terrificus during meal digestion is entirely supported by the aerobic pathways and that among the attending cardiorespiratory adjustments, pulmonary Hb-O2 loading is likely improved due to the increment in blood O2 affinity.
