OBJECTIVE: To measure vitamin D status and estimate factors associated with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in Nunavimmiut (Inuit living in Nunavik) adults in 2017. DESIGN: Data were from Qanuilirpitaa? 2017 Nunavik Inuit Health Survey, a cross-sectional study conducted in August-October 2017. Participants underwent a questionnaire, including an FFQ, and blood samples were analysed for total serum 25(OH)D. SETTING: Nunavik, northern Québec, Canada. PARTICIPANTS: A stratified proportional model was used to select respondents, including 1,155 who identified as Inuit and had complete data. RESULTS: Geometric mean serum vitamin D levels were 65·2 nmol/l (95 % CI 62·9-67·6 nmol/l) among women and 65·4 nmol/l (95 % CI 62·3-68·7 nmol/l) among men. The weighted prevalence of serum 25(OH)D < 75 nmol/l, <50 nmol/l <30 nmol/l was 61·2 %, 30·3 % and 7·0 %, respectively. Individuals who were older, female, lived in smaller and/or more southerly communities and/or consumed more country (traditional) foods were at a reduced risk of low vitamin D status. Higher consumption of wild fish was specifically associated with increased serum 25(OH)D concentration. CONCLUSION: It is important that national, regional and local policies and programs are in place to secure harvest, sharing and consumption of nutritious and culturally important country foods like Arctic char and other wild fish species, particularly considering ongoing climate change in the Arctic which impacts the availability, access and quality of fish as food.

Red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV) causes substantial economic damage to aquaculture. In the present study, RSIV in wild fish near aquaculture installations was surveyed to evaluate the risk of wild fish being an infection source for RSIV outbreaks in cultured fish. In total, 1102 wild fish, consisting of 44 species, were captured from 2 aquaculture areas in western Japan using fishing, gill nets, and fishing baskets between 2019 and 2022. Eleven fish from 7 species were confirmed to harbor the RSIV genome using a probe-based real-time PCR assay. The mean viral load of the RSIV-positive wild fish was 101.1 ± 0.4 copies mg-1 DNA, which was significantly lower than that of seemingly healthy red sea bream Pagrus major in a net pen during an RSIV outbreak (103.3 ± 1.5 copies mg-1 DNA) that occurred in 2021. Sequencing analysis of a partial region of the major capsid protein gene demonstrated that the RSIV genome detected in the wild fish was identical to that of the diseased fish in a fish farm located in the same area in which the wild fish were captured. Based on the diagnostic records of RSIV in the sampled area, the RSIV-infected wild fish appeared during or after the RSIV outbreak in cultured fish, suggesting that RSIV detected in wild fish was derived from the RSIV outbreak in cultured fish. Therefore, wild fish populations near aquaculture installations may not be a significant risk factor for RSIV outbreaks in cultured fish.

Nematodes that parasitize salmonids are found in both seawater and freshwater. Unlike seawater species such as those in family Anisakidae, freshwater species have not been well studied. In particular, the influences of these nematodes on the body condition of salmonids remain unclear. We studied the effects of Salmonema cf. ephemeridarum on the body condition of masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou. We found a positive relationship between the number of parasites and fish fork length. In contrast, we found a negative relationship between the body condition (condition factor) of fish and the number of parasites. These results suggest that nematode infection could affect host energy reserves for future growth.

Mycobacterium infection in fish is a well-known disease problem globally, mainly in the farming of ornamental fish or fish for food. Less is known about the prevalence, distribution and the effects such infections have on wild fish species. Presumptive mycobacteriosis has previously been observed in Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus). Since 2018, there has been an increase in reports of granulomatous kidney disease in Atlantic mackerel with the suspicion of this being mycobacteriosis. A total of six individuals were sent to the Institute of Marine Research for further examination. They were caught in the Nordic Sea by either commercial fishing vessels or during the International Ecosystem Summer Survey in the Nordic Seas (IESSNS research cruise) between 2018 and 2020. Samples for both histological and molecular analysis were collected. Here, we detect a likely novel Mycobacterium species in tissue samples from Atlantic mackerel with this condition, on the basis of rDNA and protein gene sequences. The same unnamed bacterium seems to have been found in some Pacific marine fishes. The macroscopic and histological manifestation of the disease is described. Over the past years, there has been an increase in reports of mycobacteriosis worldwide and climate change has been suggested as one of the driving forces as these bacteria prefer warm water.

The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) population in the Baltic Sea consists of wild and hatchery-reared fish that have been released into the sea to support salmon stocks. During feeding migration, salmon migrate to different parts of the Baltic Sea and are exposed to various biotic and abiotic stressors, such as organohalogen compounds (OHCs). The effects of salmon origin (wild or hatchery-reared), feeding area (Baltic Main Basin, Bothnian Sea, and Gulf of Finland), and OHC concentration on the differences in hepatic proteome of salmon were investigated. Multi-level analysis of the OHC concentration, transcriptome, proteome, and oxidative stress biomarkers measured from the same salmon individuals were performed to find the key variables (origin, feeding area, OHC concentrations, and oxidative stress) that best account for the differences in the transcriptome and proteome between the salmon groups. When comparing wild and hatchery-reared salmon, differences were found in xenobiotic and amino acid metabolism-related pathways. When comparing salmon from different feeding areas, the amino acid and carbohydrate metabolic pathways were notably different. Several proteins found in these pathways are correlated with the concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The multi-level analysis also revealed amino acid metabolic pathways in connection with PCBs and oxidative stress variables related to glutathione metabolism. Other pathways found in the multi-level analysis included genetic information processes related to ribosomes, signaling and cellular processes related to the cytoskeleton, and the immune system, which were connected mainly to the concentrations of Polychlorinated biphenyls and Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and their metabolites. These results suggest that the hepatic proteome of salmon in the Baltic Sea, together with the transcriptome, is more affected by the OHC concentrations and oxidative stress of the feeding area than the origin of the salmon.

Bacterial kidney disease (BKD) can be a devastating bacterial infection in salmonids, and it is present in aquaculture throughout the world. BKD is caused by the Gram-positive facultative intracellular bacterium Renibacterium salmoninarum (R. salmoninarum) that is spread both horizontally and vertically. Disease signs include external ulcerations and blisters and internal signs such as organ swelling, granulomas, petechiae and ascites. In Sweden, BKD accounts for a significant income loss in aquacultures due to expensive decontamination of the facility and increased disease susceptibility for the immunocompromised fish leading to higher mortality rates. In addition, uncontrolled spread in aquaculture may threaten the survival of wild fish populations. The aim of our study was to investigate the prevalence of R. salmoninarum in wild salmonids caught in Swedish waters where net pen farms with a recent history of BKD are present. Four rivers with at least one BKD-positive or recently BKD-positive farm were selected. In addition, we evaluated the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) for surveillance and monitoring of ongoing infections at these locations. In total, 1058 fish were sampled from four different river systems, and of them 52 (4.9%) were positive for R. salmoninarum by antigen ELISA. Surprisingly, these fish were not evenly distributed between the four river systems, but 50 were caught in the same river (Ljungan). This accounts for an alarmingly high rate of 17% R. salmoninarum-positive samples in wild salmonids in this area. This number is far above what was expected and clearly shows the risk with an open farming system as well as the importance of effective health monitoring programmes to avoid an uncontrolled spread of the disease. The use of eDNA for monitoring BKD is somewhat difficult to evaluate. Few of the water samples analysed were PCR positive for R. salmoninarum (2 of 38) and those were collected where no ELISA positive fish were identified. In addition to water, sediment samples were collected under a net pen farm that had recently slaughtered all fish due to ongoing R. salmoninarum infections. Sediment samples are more promising than water as 4 of 5 samples at one farming facility where positive for R. salmoninarum. Thus, sediment samples may be valuable for monitoring potential ongoing BKD in farms, without the need to sacrifice valuable fish.

Although fish are widely confirmed to be susceptible to heavy metals (HMs) contamination in sediments, this bioconversion haven't been detailed. This is especially the case in karst areas, where HMs are less stably retained in the sediments and are more bioavailable. Therefore, we surveyed representative karst rivers in Liuzhou, China, in order to study the relationship between the speciations of seven HMs in the sediments with their bioaccumulation in wild fish. The results showed that the HMs in sediments are all below their permissible exposure limit (PEL), but Cd and Zn are significantly higher than soil basline. Most HMs are in residual fraction, while their exchangeable fractions are present in extremely low proportions. The concentration of Zn, Cr and Cd in some fish are above their maximum recommended limit (MRL). The concentrations of most of the HMs in the fish are significantly correlated with the levels in the sediments and given the higher correlation coefficients for their carbonate-bound phase, this phase can be seen to play a critical role in HMs bioconversion. However, the presence of this phase in low proportions enables other phases, especially oxidizable form, to play a greater role in HMs bioaccumulation. Apart from Do, HMs in the fish samples are significantly correlated with multiple environmental factors, demonstrating environmental fluctuations can manipulate HMs bioconversion from sediments; however, their significance depend heavily on the proportion of particular species. HMs in reducible and oxidizable fraction are more important in regulating, rather than promoting, their bioconversion during environmental fluctuations. Fluctuations in EC, TDS and pH can increase the impacts of HMs in carbonate-bound fraction on their bioconversion. Given the higher background values of EC and TDS and lower pH values during the monsoon period, careful attention should be paid to the increased bioconversion of HMs in karst rivers during this season.

To evaluate the physiological state of the wild fish inhabiting the Biobío River in South-Central Chile, susceptible to the chemical contamination from different sources, biochemical and physiological biomarkers were applied to wild fish Percilia irwini and Trichomycterus areolatus in situ. Fish caught in the Biobío river in low, medium, and high anthropic impacts areas, with different pollution degrees along the river. Ethoxyresorufin O-O deethylase (EROD) activity was evaluated in fish liver. Length, weight, Gonad weight and Liver weight, Physiological Index, and gill and liver histopathology were conducted. Physicochemical parameters (pH, Temperature, Conductivity, and TDS) were measured at each sampling site. The results indicated a deteriorating condition in the biological parameters of both species in a high anthropic zone. Fishes show an increase in physiological indices and EROD liver activity, agreeing with previous studies supporting evidence of reproductive change development as we move downstream the river. Also, an increase in histopathological lesions towards the lower third stretch of the Biobío River. The Integrated Index of Physiological Biomarkers (IPBR) indicated that sites located in the high impact area (P. irwini: BC: 4.09; RC: 3.38; PC: 3.50; SJ: 2.34 and T. areolatus BC: 6.06, PC: 5.37; SJ: 5.42) have the most detrimental environmental quality, compared to reference area. The integrated biomarker analysis demonstrates that the alterations observed are related to the high anthropic activity levels downstream from the sites with the least intervention, demonstrating that the IPBR used is a complementary tool for studies of the Environmental Effects Monitoring approach.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) as emergence contaminations have spread widely in the water environment. Wild fish may be recipients and communicators of ARGs in the water environment, however, the distribution and transmission of ARGs in the wild fish and relevant water environment were rarely reported. Here, we have profiled ARGs and bacterial communities in wild freshwater fish and relevant water in a peri-urban river using high-throughput qPCR and 16S rRNA gene sequence. A total of 80 and 220 unique ARG subtypes were identified in fish and water samples. Fish and water both showed significant ARG seasonal variations (P < 0.05). The highest absolute abundance of ARGs in fish and water occurred in summer (1.32 × 109 copies per g, on average) and autumn (9.04 × 106 copies per mL), respectively. In addition, the bipartite network analysis showed that 9 ARGs and 1 mobile genetic element continuously shared in fish and water. Furthermore, bacteria shared in fish and water were found to significantly correlate with shard ARGs. The findings demonstrate that bacteria and ARGs in fish and water could interconnect and ARGs might transfer between fish and water using bacteria as a spreading medium.

This study investigates the possible transmission routes of Vibrio spp. in a tropical cage-cultured marine fishes. Samplings of cultured Asian seabass, red snapper, hybrid grouper, wild fish, trash fish, fish fry, water and sediment samples were conducted from December 2016 to August 2017. All fish were dissected in situ and swabs were taken aseptically from the skin, eye, liver and kidney for bacterial isolation and identification. Bacterial isolation and identification from water, sediment and trash fish were also made. A total of 261 Vibrio spp. isolates recovered from the cultured, wild and fry fish, as well as from the sediment and water of the farm environment were analysed. Sequences of the pyrH gene were used to investigate the degree of relatedness and possible transmission routes existing between the isolated Vibrio spp. The population tree revealed the existence of selected Vibrio spp. that possibly transmitted between the newly introduced fish fry and wild fish into the cultured fish, while water also might possibly serves as natural transmission medium of certain Vibrio spp. in this fish farm. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The source of transmission of Vibrio spp. into farmed marine fish remains unclear. This study highlights the possible transmission routes of Vibrio into cage-cultured marine fishes via newly introduced fish fry and wild fish. Understanding the routes of transmission of Vibrio spp. might help in controlling the disease in the near future.

Infectious diseases in marine animals have ecological, socio-economic and environmental impacts. Nervous necrosis virus (NNV) and Streptococcus iniae have become major threats to marine aquaculture and have been detected in morbid marine organisms worldwide. However, despite their importance, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the prevalence of these pathogens in wild fish species. Here we sampled indigenous and Lessepsian species from different trophic levels and different biological niches in the eastern Mediterranean. A total of 174 fish and 32 crustaceans were tested for S. iniae and a total of 195 fish and 33 crustaceans were tested for NNV. We found an overall prevalence of 9.71% Streptococcus spp. and 21.49% NNV in selected marine fish and crustaceans by PCR and qPCR. In fish, the zoonotic agent S. iniae was detected at a higher prevalence in kidney compared to liver tissue. Co-infection by both pathogens was detected only in 5 specimens. We also examined gilthead sea bream Sparus aurata from an Israeli offshore marine farm during the grow-out period, in order to assess the possibility of horizontal pathogen transmission from wild to maricultured fish. Three out of 15 (20%) fish were found to be NNV positive after 120 d in the sea, suggesting spontaneous transmission from wild to farmed fish. Our findings suggest that more surveys should be conducted, especially in areas were mariculture farms are planned to be established.

Bioactive substances in the Biobio River Basin in Chile were examined by deploying Semi Permeable Membrane Devices (SPMDs) upstream and downstream of 4 pulp mill effluent discharges. Androgenic and estrogenic activity of SPMD extracts were then evaluated using in vitro fish sex steroid receptor binding assays. The results indicated the occurrence of estrogenic type compounds associated with one of the mill discharges. A significant correlation among the presence of these compounds, an increase in gonadosomatic index GSI and induction of hepatic EROD activity of two native fish species was observed. However, no significant presence of mature oocytes in female gonads was detected. Although EROD induction was observed in sites impacted by mill effluents, an increase of its activity occurred towards the downstream areas, suggesting other non-mill sources. More research is needed to understand the environmental changes in context of the new technological improvements in treatment systems to MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) recently implemented by the pulp mill industries.

The residue levels of antibiotics, metals and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were investigated in six fish species from the Karakaya Dam Reservoir, Turkey. Among monitored antibiotics, only enrofloxacin and ofloxacin were detected in muscle of fish species. Enrofloxacin levels in positive samples ranged from 0.0034 to 0.0073 mg/kg. It was detected in four fish species (trout barb, common carp, chub and Euphrates barbell), while ofloxacin was only found in common carp with the concentration of 0.0072 mg/kg. Both enrofloxacin and ofloxacin levels were below the maximum residue levels. No detectable residues of any OCPs were found in fish species. The highest toxic metal (As, Cd and Pb) content was detected in Euphrates barbell (0.103 mg/kg). Arsenic, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn levels were well below the maximum permissible limits. The levels of antibiotics and metals found in fish species in the present study were generally lower than or comparable to those reported in other water bodies. According to estimated daily intake and hazard quotient values, antibiotics and metals detected in these wild fish species do not appear to pose a serious risk to public health.

Wild fish were suspected to be the source of reinfection by viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) in Finnish brackish water rainbow trout farms located in a restriction zone regarding viral haemorrhagic septicaemia (VHS) comprising the entire Province of Åland, Baltic Sea, in the 2000s. Altogether, 1636 wild fish of 17 different species living in the vicinity of infected fish farms were screened for VHSV during the years 2005-2008. Additionally, 2 uninfected wild fish species as well as farmed whitefish were introduced into a VHS-positive fish farm to test whether they became infected by VHSV from the clinically diseased rainbow trout. Wild fish did not test positive for VHSV on any occasion. In contrast, whitefish introduced to a VHS-positive farm were infected with VHSV genotype Id and started to replicate the virus for a short time during the trial. Whitefish are farmed together with, or in the vicinity of, farmed rainbow trout in the study area and, according to this study, are a possible source of the recurring infection in the restriction area. A sprivivirus was isolated from all fish species in the infection trial without causing mortality in the test groups.

The distribution and potential health risks of eight heavy metals (Copper (Cu), Chromium (Cr), Zinc (Zn), Lead (Pb), Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Manganese (Mn), Nickel (Ni)) in 16 freshwater systems from central and eastern North China, were investigated. The fish were divided as wild fish, which grew naturally without artificially feeding, and farmed fish. The total concentrations of the eight heavy metals ranged from 82.9 to 226 µg/L in the surface water samples and 3.32-27.6 mg/kg dw in the fish samples. There was no significant difference in the heavy metal concentrations between natural and farmed water systems. The concentrations of toxic metals, including Pb, As, Cd, Cr, are similar in all kinds of fish. However, the essential metals (Zn, Cu, Mn, Ni) in crucian carp (15.9 mg/kg) was much higher than other kinds of fish. Comparing the wild and farmed fish, the average concentrations of each heavy metal in wild crucian carp, bighead carp, grass carp were higher than those in farmed fish. The average log BCFs (bioconcentration factor) of Zn, Cr and Cu were the highest (2.14, 2.04, 2.00 L/kg) while that of Cd (0.65 L/kg) was the lowest. The non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks to adults and children resulting from consuming the fish were assessed based on the target hazard quotients (THQ). The results indicated that the non-carcinogenic health risk to humans by consuming fish products, no matter wild or farmed fish, was relatively low. The carcinogenic risk of inorganic As was 5.11 × 10-6-1.95 × 10-4 for children and 2.71 × 10-6-1.04 × 10-4 for adult, which are within the acceptable range. The results indicated that the concentrations of heavy metals in the freshwater fish in central and eastern North China were relatively low, and did not cause considerable human health risks.

Thousands of Scottish wild fish were screened for pathogens by Marine Scotland Science. A systematic review of published and unpublished data on six key pathogens (Renibacterium salmoninarum, Aeromonas salmonicida, IPNV, ISAV, SAV and VHSV) found in Scottish wild and farmed fish was undertaken. Despite many reported cases in farmed fish, there was a limited number of positive samples from Scottish wild fish, however, there was evidence for interactions between wild and farmed fish. A slightly elevated IPNV prevalence was reported in wild marine fish caught close to Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., farms that had undergone clinical IPN. Salmonid alphavirus was isolated from wild marine fish caught near Atlantic salmon farms with a SAV infection history. Isolations of VHSV were made from cleaner wrasse (Labridae) used on Scottish Atlantic salmon farms and VHSV was detected in local wild marine fish. However, these pathogens have been detected in wild marine fish caught remotely from aquaculture sites. These data suggest that despite the large number of samples taken, there is limited evidence for clinical disease in wild fish due to these pathogens (although BKD and furunculosis historically occurred) and they are likely to have had a minimal impact on Scottish wild fish.

We present the results of a field study that evaluates whether exposure to anthropogenic pollution impacts immunological and health-state parameters of wild marine fish during the breeding and non-breeding periods. We assessed aspects of innate immunity (bactericidal capacity, bacterial agglutination, and leukocyte profile) and general health-related parameters (neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, hematocrit, and condition factor) in the Patagonian rockfish (Sebastes oculatus) sampled from polluted (exposed) and reference (control) sites during winter (i.e., coolest temperatures and active reproductive period) and in summer (i.e., warmest temperatures and non-reproductive period). Results showed lower bactericidal competence, hematocrit, and condition factor in fish from exposed sites independently of season, whereas lymphocytes were higher and monocytes lower at the exposed site only during summer. Moreover, fish sampled during winter displayed lower bactericidal competence, hematocrit, and condition factor than those sampled in summer independently of site, whereas the opposite pattern was found for bacterial agglutination. These results could be explained by life-history theory, which predicts a re-allocation of resources between reproduction and other physiological functions (including immunity) during the most energetically demanding season. The present results show an alteration in immunological and health-state parameters of wild marine fish exposed to anthropogenic pollution independently of season, which could potentially result in higher susceptibility to disease and in turn population decline.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are widespread persistent anthropogenic contaminants that can accumulate in tissues of fish. The toxicity of PCBs and their transformation products has been investigated for nearly 50 years, but there is a lack of consensus regarding the effects of these environmental contaminants on wild fish populations. The objective of this review is to critically examine these investigations and evaluate publicly available databases for evidence of effects of PCBs in wild fish. Biological activity of PCBs is limited to a small proportion of PCB congeners [e.g., dioxin-like PCBs (DL-PCBs)] and occurs at concentrations that are typically orders of magnitude higher than PCB levels detected in wild fish. Induction of biomarkers consistent with PCB exposure (e.g., induction of cytochrome P450 monooxygenase system) has been evaluated frequently and shown to be induced in fish from some environments, but there does not appear to be consistent reports of damage (i.e., biomarkers of effect) to biomolecules (i.e., oxidative injury) in these fish. Numerous investigations of endocrine system dysfunction or effects on other organ systems have been conducted in wild fish, but collectively there is no consistent evidence of PCB effects on these systems in wild fish. Early life stage toxicity of DL-PCBs does not appear to occur at concentrations reported in wild fish embryos, and results do not support an association between PCBs and decreased survival of early life stages of wild fish. Overall, there appears to be little evidence that PCBs have had any widespread effect on the health or survival of wild fish.
