RESUMO

Jaye Antoinette Wilson is a winner of the fourth annual Rising Black Scientists Award for a scholar in the physical, data, earth, and environmental sciences. We asked emerging Black scientists to tell us about their scientific vision and goals, experiences that sparked their interest in science, how they want to contribute to a more inclusive scientific community, and how these all fit together on their journey. This is her story.

RESUMO

"Helicopter research" refers to a practice where researchers from wealthier countries conduct studies in lower-income countries with little involvement of local researchers or community members. This practice also occurs domestically. In this Commentary, we outline strategies to curb domestic helicopter research and to foster equity-centered collaborations.

RESUMO

Our understanding of tumorigenesis and cancer progression as well as clinical therapies for different cancer types have evolved dramatically in recent years. However, even with this progress, there are big challenges for scientists and oncologists to tackle, ranging from unpacking the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved to therapeutics and biomarker development to quality of life in the aftermath of therapy. In this article, we asked researchers to comment on the questions that they think are important to address in the coming years.

RESUMO

Dr. Michelle McMurry-Heath brings a wide-ranging background in medicine, immunology, research, and policy coordination to her current role as the chief executive officer for the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO). She had a chat with Cell editor Cheri Sirois about how biotech differs from basic science and about the opportunities it offers. A lightly edited transcript of their conversation is shared here.

RESUMO

Cell asked LGBTQ+ scientists around the world about how their identity shapes their experiences in STEM. Here we share six unique perspectives of researchers highlighting how their area of expertise, research focus, institutions, and geographical location have played a role in this regard. We thank them for sharing their voices and continued efforts toward making science more inclusive.

RESUMO

Technological advances in a variety of scientific disciplines are being applied in the life sciences leading to an increase in the number scientists who see themselves or are classed as being multidisciplinary. Although their diverse skills are celebrated and needed to understand the immense complexity of life, being a multidisciplinary researcher can pose unique challenges. We asked multidisciplinary researchers and the director of an institute that fosters multidisciplinary research for their thoughts on what they see as the challenges or obstacles that multidisciplinary scientists can often face.

RESUMO

The lack of racial diversity among the winners of United States biomedical research prizes reflects a chronic problem of the underappreciation of certain groups of biomedical scientists. Asians continue to be severely underrepresented as awardees of United States biomedical research prizes, a trend that shows no obvious recent improvement.

RESUMO

For over 12 years, spanning three administrations, Dr. Francis Collins has served as the director of the National Institutes of Health. During that time, he and the NIH launched ambitious programs to spur research in diverse topic areas, with important successes. He has also confronted issues facing science and scientists. Dr. Collins recently stepped down as director. Before his departure, he had a conversation with John Pham, reflecting on his time leading the NIH and sharing his perspectives and his hopes for the NIH and the scientific community moving forward.

RESUMO

Persistent symptoms following SARS-CoV-2 infection are increasingly reported, although the drivers of post-acute sequelae (PASC) of COVID-19 are unclear. Here we assessed 214 individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2, with varying disease severity, for one year from COVID-19 symptom onset to determine the early correlates of PASC. A multivariate signature detected beyond two weeks of disease, encompassing unresolving inflammation, anemia, low serum iron, altered iron-homeostasis gene expression and emerging stress erythropoiesis; differentiated those who reported PASC months later, irrespective of COVID-19 severity. A whole-blood heme-metabolism signature, enriched in hospitalized patients at month 1-3 post onset, coincided with pronounced iron-deficient reticulocytosis. Lymphopenia and low numbers of dendritic cells persisted in those with PASC, and single-cell analysis reported iron maldistribution, suggesting monocyte iron loading and increased iron demand in proliferating lymphocytes. Thus, defects in iron homeostasis, dysregulated erythropoiesis and immune dysfunction due to COVID-19 possibly contribute to inefficient oxygen transport, inflammatory disequilibrium and persisting symptomatology, and may be therapeutically tractable.

RESUMO

Complex datasets provide opportunities for discoveries beyond their initial scope. Effective and rapid data sharing and management practices are crucial to realize this potential; however, they are harder to implement than post-publication access. Here, we introduce the concept of a "data sharing trust" to maximize the value of large datasets.

RESUMO

Our nationwide network of BME women faculty collectively argue that racial funding disparity by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) remains the most insidious barrier to success of Black faculty in our profession. We thus refocus attention on this critical barrier and suggest solutions on how it can be dismantled.

RESUMO

In celebration of Pride Month, we asked transgender, genderqueer, and nonbinary scientists to tell us about what fascinates them, their ambitions and achievements, and how their gender identities have shaped their experiences in STEM. We owe a special thanks to 500 Queer Scientists (https://500queerscientists.com/), whose network and efforts at increasing LGBTQ+ scientists' visibility made this article possible.

RESUMO

Measuring scientific success has traditionally involved numbers and statistics. However, due to an increasingly uncertain world, more than ever we need to measure the effect that science has on real-world scenarios. We asked researchers to share their points of view on what scientific impact means to them and how impact matters beyond the numbers.

RESUMO

All of science takes place amidst a world shaken by uncertainty, social and political upheaval, and challenges to truthful testimony. Just at the moment in which increasing control over biology has been theorized, our social world has become increasingly contentious and its values more divisive. Using the example of gene drives for malaria control to explore the problem of deep uncertainty in biomedical research, I argue that profound uncertainty is an essential feature. Applying the language and presumptions of the discipline of philosophical ethics, I describe three types of uncertainty that raise ethical challenges in scientific research. Rather than mitigate these challenges with excessive precautions and limits on progress, I suggest that researchers can cultivate classic values of veracity, courage, humility, and fidelity in their research allowing science to proceed ethically under conditions of deep uncertainty.

RESUMO

As an underrepresented scientist navigating her way through the field, I have either noticed or experienced barriers at key stages in the scientific journey that hinder the representation and visibility of diverse people in the community. To see a face like mine represented in science requires intentional action to turn a system not initially built to include all into a community that reflects, embraces, and celebrates people from all demographics.
