Large numbers of inbred laboratory rat strains have been developed for a range of complex disease phenotypes. To gain insights into the evolutionary pressures underlying selection for these phenotypes, we sequenced the genomes of 27 rat strains, including 11 models of hypertension, diabetes, and insulin resistance, along with their respective control strains. Altogether, we identified more than 13 million single-nucleotide variants, indels, and structural variants across these rat strains. Analysis of strain-specific selective sweeps and gene clusters implicated genes and pathways involved in cation transport, angiotensin production, and regulators of oxidative stress in the development of cardiovascular disease phenotypes in rats. Many of the rat loci that we identified overlap with previously mapped loci for related traits in humans, indicating the presence of shared pathways underlying these phenotypes in rats and humans. These data represent a step change in resources available for evolutionary analysis of complex traits in disease models.

Fluorescence imaging is currently being actively developed for surgical guidance; however, it remains underutilized for diagnostic and endoscopic surveillance of incipient colorectal cancer in high-risk patients. Here we demonstrate the utility and potential for clinical translation of a fluorescently labeled cathepsin-activated chemical probe to highlight gastrointestinal lesions. This probe stays optically dark until it is activated by proteases produced by tumor-associated macrophages and accumulates within the lesions, enabling their detection using an endoscope outfitted with a fluorescence detector. We evaluated the probe in multiple murine models and a human-scale porcine model of gastrointestinal carcinogenesis. The probe provides fluorescence-guided surveillance of gastrointestinal lesions and augments histopathological analysis by highlighting areas of dysplasia as small as 400 µm, which were visibly discernible with significant tumor-to-background ratios, even in tissues with a background of severe inflammation and ulceration. Given these results, we anticipate that this probe will enable sensitive fluorescence-guided biopsies, even in the presence of highly inflamed colorectal tissue, which will improve early diagnosis to prevent gastrointestinal cancers.

Embryonic stem (ES) cells have been available from inbred mice since 1981 but have not been validated for other rodents. Failure to establish ES cells from a range of mammals challenges the identity of cultivated stem cells and our understanding of the pluripotent state. Here we investigated derivation of ES cells from the rat. We applied molecularly defined conditions designed to shield the ground state of authentic pluripotency from inductive differentiation stimuli. Undifferentiated cell lines developed that exhibited diagnostic features of ES cells including colonization of multiple tissues in viable chimeras. Definitive ES cell status was established by transmission of the cell line genome to offspring. Derivation of germline-competent ES cells from the rat paves the way to targeted genetic manipulation in this valuable biomedical model species. Rat ES cells will also provide a refined test-bed for functional evaluation of pluripotent stem cell-derived tissue repair and regeneration.

Rats have important advantages over mice as an experimental system for physiological and pharmacological investigations. The lack of rat embryonic stem (ES) cells has restricted the availability of transgenic technologies to create genetic models in this species. Here, we show that rat ES cells can be efficiently derived, propagated, and genetically manipulated in the presence of small molecules that specifically inhibit GSK3, MEK, and FGF receptor tyrosine kinases. These rat ES cells express pluripotency markers and retain the capacity to differentiate into derivatives of all three germ layers. Most importantly, they can produce high rates of chimerism when reintroduced into early stage embryos and can transmit through the germline. Establishment of authentic rat ES cells will make possible sophisticated genetic manipulation to create models for the study of human diseases.

The distribution of the D2-like dopamine receptor (D2DR) in the cortex and striatum was compared between rats with absence, audiogenic, or combined genetically determined epilepsy and normal Wistar rats by autoradiography. A significantly lower D2DR binding density was observed in the dorsal and ventrolateral aspects of the nucleus accumbens in epileptic vs. non-epileptic rats. Rats with audiogenic epilepsy additionally showed a higher D2DR density in the dorsal striatum and motor and somatosensory cortex and a lower D2DR density in the ventrolateral part of the nucleus accumbens. The findings indicated that a common neuronal circuit is involved in the pathogenesis of both convulsive and nonconvulsive forms of generalized epilepsy.

Mice and rats are the most commonly used vertebrate model organisms in biomedical research. The availability of a reference genome in both animals combined with the deep sequencing of several doze of popular inbred lines also provides rich sequence variation data in these species. In some cases, such sequence variants can be linked directly to a distinctive phenotype. In previous work, we created the mouse and rat online searchable databases ("Mousepost" and "Ratpost") where small variant information for protein coding transcripts in mouse and rat inbred strains can be easily retrieved at the amino acid level. These tools are directly useful in forward genetics strategies or as a repository of existing sequence variations. Here, we perform a comparison between the "Mousepost" and "Ratpost" databases and we couple these two tools to a database of human sequence variants ClinVar. We investigated the level of redundancy and complementarity of known variants in protein coding transcripts and found that the large majority of variants is species-specific. However, a small set of positions is conserved in an inbred line between both species. We conclude that both databases are highly complementary, but this may change with further sequencing efforts in both species.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate protective effects of endurance exercise training against diabetic kidney disease (DKD) with muscle weakness by using male spontaneously diabetic Torii (SDT) fatty rats as type 2 diabetic animal models with obesity, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. METHODS: Eight-week-old SDT fatty rats (n = 12) and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (n = 10) were randomly divided into exercise (Ex; SDT-Ex: n = 6, SD-Ex: n = 5) and sedentary groups (SDT-Cont: n = 6, SD-Cont: n = 5), respectively. Each group underwent regular treadmill exercise 4 times a week from ages 8-16 weeks. RESULTS: The exercise attenuated hypertension and hyperlipidemia and prevented increases in renal parameter levels without affecting blood glucose levels. In the SDT fatty rats, it prevented induction of renal morphological abnormalities in the interstitium of the superficial and intermediate layers of the cortex. Downregulated expression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase in the glomerulus of the SDT fatty rats was significantly upregulated by the exercise. The exercise upregulated the renal expressions of both medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator-1α related to fatty acid metabolism. It increased muscle strength and both muscle weight and cross-sectional area of type IIb muscle fibers in the extensor digitorum longus muscle in the SDT fatty rats. CONCLUSION: Endurance exercise training in type 2 diabetes ameliorates DKD by improving endothelial abnormality and enhancing fatty acid metabolism in addition to attenuated hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and muscle weakness independently of blood glucose levels.

AIM: To investigate the influence of strain differences in immune responses on the pathogenesis of experimental periapical lesions in Dark Agouti (DA) and Albino Oxford (AO) inbred strains of rats. METHODOLOGY: Periapical lesions were induced in male DA and AO rats by pulp exposure of the first mandibular right molars to the oral environment. Animals were killed 21 days after pulp exposure. The mandibular jaws were retrieved and prepared for radiographic, pathohistological, immunohistochemical analysis, real-time PCR and flow cytometry. Blood samples and the supernatant of periapical lesions were collected for measurement of cytokines and oxidative stress marker levels. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis H and Mann-Whitney U non-parametric tests or parametric One-Way anova and Independent Samples T-test to determine the differences between groups depending on the normality of the data. A significant difference was considered when p values were <.05. RESULTS: DA rats developed significantly larger (p < .05) periapical lesions compared to AO rats as confirmed by radiographic and pathohistological analysis. The immunohistochemical staining intensity for CD3 was significantly greater in periapical lesions of DA rats compared to AO rats (p < .05). In DA rats, periapical lesions had a significantly higher (p < .05) percentage of CD3+ cells compared to AO rats. Also, the percentage of INF-γ, IL-17 and IL-10 CD3+CD4+ cells was significantly higher in DA rats (p < .05). DA rats had a significantly higher Th17/Th10 ratio. RT-PCR expression of IL-1ß, INF-γ and IL-17 genes was significantly higher in periapical lesions of DA compared to AO rats (p < .05). The receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-Β ligand/osteoprotegerin ratio was higher in DA compared to AO rats with periapical lesions (p < .05). Systemic levels of TNF-α and IL-6 were significantly higher in DA compared to AO rats (p < .05). Levels of lipid peroxidation measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and reduced glutathione were significantly higher (p < .05) in the supernatant in the periapical lesions of DA rats. CONCLUSION: After pulp exposure, DA rats developed much larger periapical lesions compared to AO rats. Genetically determined differences in immunopathology have been demonstrated to be a significant element defining the severity of periapical lesions.

Since the NAD+-dependent histone deacetylases sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) and sirtuin-2 (SIRT2) are critically involved in epigenetics, endocrinology and immunology and affect the longevity in model organisms, we investigated their expression in brains of 3-month-old and 14-15 months old rat model of depression Flinders Sensitive Line (FSL) and control Flinders Resistant Line (FRL) rats. In view of the dysregulated NPY system in depression, we also studied NPY in young and old FSL to explore the temporal trajectory of depressive-like-ageing interaction. Sirt1, Sirt2 and Npy mRNA were determined using qRT-PCR in prefrontal cortex (PFC) from young and old FSL and FRL, and in hippocampi from young FSL and FRL. PFC: Sirt1 expression was decreased in FSL (p = 0.001). An interaction between age and genotype was found (p = 0.032); young FSL had lower Sirt1 with respect to both age (p = 0.026) and genotype (p = 0.001). Sirt2 was lower in FSL (p = 0.003). Npy mRNA was downregulated in FSL (p = 0.001) but did not differ between the young and old rat groups. Hippocampus: Sirt1 was reduced in young FSL compared to young FRL (p = 0.005). There was no difference in Sirt2 between FSL and FRL. Npy levels were decreased in hippocampus of young FSL compared to young FRL (p = 0.003). Effects of ageing could not be investigated due to loss of samples. To conclude, i this is the first demonstration that SIRT1 and SIRT2 are changed in brain of FSL, a rat model of depression; ii the changes are age-dependent; iii sirtuins are potential targets for treatment of age-related neurodegenerative diseases.

The aim of this study is to find out whether maternal methyl-enriched diet affects the content of monoamines and their metabolites in brain structures of adult WAG/Rij offspring. It has been shown for the first time that maternal methyl-enriched diet (choline, betaine, folic acid, vitamin B12, L-methionine, zink) during the perinatal period increases dopaminergic tone of the mesolimbic brain system in adult offspring of WAG/Rij rats, which is accompanied by the suppression of the symptoms of genetic absence epilepsy and comorbid depression. Results suggest that maternal methyl-enriched diet during the perinatal period may be served as a new therapeutic strategy to prevent the development of a hypofunction of the mesolimbic dopaminergic brain system and associated genetic absence epilepsy and comorbid depression in offspring.

Hypertension and diabetes are the greatest factors influencing the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Investigation into the role of nephron number in CKD alone or with hypertension has revealed a strong inverse relationship between the two; however, not much is known about the connection between nephron number and diabetic kidney disease. The heterogeneous stock-derived model of unilateral renal agenesis (HSRA) rat, a novel model of nephron deficiency, provides a unique opportunity to study the association between nephron number and hypertension and diabetes on CKD. HSRA rats exhibit failure of one kidney to develop in 50-75% of offspring, whereas the remaining offspring are born with two kidneys. Rats born with one kidney (HSRA-S) develop significant renal injury with age compared with two-kidney littermates (HSRA-C). The induction of hypertension as a secondary stressor leads to significantly more renal injury in HSRA-S compared with HSRA-C rats and nephrectomized HSRA-C (HSRA-UNX) rats. The present study sought to address the hypothesis that nephron deficiency in the HSRA rat would hasten renal injury in the presence of a secondary stressor of hyperglycemia. HSRA animals did not exhibit diabetes-related traits at any age; thus, streptozotocin (STZ) was used to induce hyperglycemia in HSRA-S, HSRA-C, and HSRA-UNX rats. STZ- and vehicle-treated animals were followed for 15 wk. STZ-treated animals developed robust hyperglycemia, but in contrast to the response to hypertension, neither HSRA-S nor HSRA-UNX animals developed proteinuria compared with vehicle treatment. In total, our data indicate that hyperglycemia from STZ alone does not have a significant impact on the onset or progression of injury in young one-kidney HSRA animals.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The HSRA rat, a novel model of nephron deficiency, provides a unique opportunity to study the association between nephron number and confounding cardiovascular complications that impact kidney health. Although hypertension was previously shown to exacerbate renal injury in young HSRA animals, diabetic hyperglycemia did not lead to worse renal injury, suggesting that nephron number has limited impact on kidney injury, at least in this model.

Chronic kidney disease results in high serum urea concentrations leading to excessive protein carbamylation, primarily albumin. This is associated with increased cardiovascular disease and mortality. Multiple methods were used to address whether carbamylation alters albumin metabolism. Intravital two-photon imaging of the Munich Wistar Frömter (MWF) rat kidney and liver allowed us to characterize filtration and proximal tubule uptake and liver uptake. Microscale thermophoresis enabled quantification of cubilin (CUB7,8 domain) and FcRn binding. Finally, multiple biophysical methods including dynamic light scattering, small-angle X-ray scattering, LC-MS/MS and in silico analyses were used to identify the critical structural alterations and amino acid modifications of rat albumin. Carbamylation of albumin reduced binding to CUB7,8 and FcRn in a dose-dependent fashion. Carbamylation markedly increased vascular clearance of carbamylated rat serum albumin (cRSA) and altered distribution of cRSA in both the kidney and liver at 16 h post intravenous injection. By evaluating the time course of carbamylation and associated charge, size, shape, and binding parameters in combination with in silico analysis and mass spectrometry, the critical binding interaction impacting carbamylated albumin's reduced FcRn binding was identified as K524. Carbamylation of RSA had no effect on glomerular filtration or proximal tubule uptake. These data indicate urea-mediated time-dependent carbamylation of albumin lysine K524 resulted in reduced binding to CUB7,8 and FcRn that contribute to altered albumin transport, leading to increased vascular clearance and increased liver and endothelial tissue accumulation.

We recently reported that the enhanced susceptibility to chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the fawn-hooded hypertensive (FHH) rat is caused, at least in part, by a mutation in γ-adducin (ADD3) that attenuates renal vascular function. The present study explored whether Add3 contributes to the modulation of podocyte structure and function using FHH and FHH.Add3 transgenic rats. The expression of ADD3 on the membrane of primary podocytes isolated from FHH was reduced compared with FHH.Add3 transgenic rats. We found that F-actin nets, which are typically localized in the lamellipodia, replaced unbranched stress fibers in conditionally immortalized mouse podocytes transfected with Add3 Dicer-substrate short interfering RNA (DsiRNA) and primary podocytes isolated from FHH rats. There were increased F/G-actin ratios and expression of the Arp2/3 complexes throughout FHH podocytes in association with reduced synaptopodin and RhoA but enhanced Rac1 and CDC42 expression in the renal cortex, glomeruli, and podocytes of FHH rats. The expression of nephrin at the slit diaphragm and the levels of focal adhesion proteins integrin-α3 and integrin-ß1 were decreased in the glomeruli of FHH rats. Cell migration was enhanced and adhesion was reduced in podocytes of FHH rats as well as in immortalized mouse podocytes transfected with Add3 DsiRNA. Mean arterial pressures were similar in FHH and FHH.Add3 transgenic rats at 16 wk of age; however, FHH rats exhibited enhanced proteinuria associated with podocyte foot process effacement. These results demonstrate that reduced ADD3 function in FHH rats alters baseline podocyte pathophysiology by rearrangement of the actin cytoskeleton at the onset of proteinuria in young animals.

Rat-inbred strains are essential as scientific tools. We have analyzed the publicly available genome sequences of 40 rat-inbred strains and provide an overview of sequence variations leading to amino acid changes in protein-coding genes, premature STOP codons or loss of STOP codons, and short in-frame insertions and deletions of all protein-coding genes across all these inbred lines. We provide an overview of the predicted impact on protein function of all these affected proteins in the database, by comparing their sequence with the sequences of the rat reference strain BN/SsNHsdMcwi. We also investigate the flaws of the protein-coding sequences of this reference strain itself, by comparing them with a consensus genome. These data can be retrieved via a searchable website (Ratpost.be) and allow a global, better interpretation of genetic background effects and a source of naturally defective alleles in these 40 sequenced classical and high-priority rat-inbred strains.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic patients have an increased predisposition to thromboembolic events, in most cases originating from thrombi in the left atrial appendage (LAA). Remodeling of the LAA, which predisposes to thrombi formation, has been previously described in diabetic patients with atrial fibrillation, but whether remodeling of the LAA occurs in diabetics also in the absence of atrial fibrillation is unknown. To investigate the contribution of diabetes, as opposed to atrial fibrillation, to remodeling of the LAA, we went from humans to the animal model. METHODS: We studied by echocardiography the structure and function of the heart over multiple time points during the evolution of diabetes in the Cohen diabetic sensitive rat (CDs/y) provided diabetogenic diet over a period of 4 months; CDs/y provided regular diet and the Cohen diabetic resistant (CDr/y), which do not develop diabetes, served as controls. All animals were in sinus rhythm throughout the study period. RESULTS: Compared to controls, CDs/y developed during the evolution of diabetes a greater heart mass, larger left atrial diameter, wider LAA orifice, increased LAA depth, greater end-diastolic and end-systolic diameter, and lower E/A ratio-all indicative of remodeling of the LAA and left atrium (LA), as well as the development of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction. To investigate the pathophysiology involved, we studied the histology of the hearts at the end of the study. We found in diabetic CDs/y, but not in any of the other groups, abundance of glycogen granules in the atrial appendages , atria  and ventricles, which may be of significance as glycogen granules have previously been associated with cell and organ dysfunction in the diabetic heart. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that our rodent model of diabetes, which was in sinus rhythm, reproduced structural and functional alterations previously observed in hearts of human diabetics with atrial fibrillation. Remodeling of the LAA and of the LA in our model was unrelated to atrial fibrillation and associated with accumulation of glycogen granules. We suggest that myocardial accumulation of glycogen granules is related to the development of diabetes and may play a pathophysiological role in remodeling of the LAA and LA, which predisposes to atrial fibrillation, thromboembolic events and left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in the diabetic heart.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to investigate the renoprotective effect of the GLP-1 receptor agonist, liraglutide, in early-phase diabetic kidney disease (DKD) using an animal model of type 2 diabetes with several metabolic disorders. METHODS: Male 8-week-old spontaneously diabetic Torii (SDT) fatty rats (n = 19) were randomly assigned to three groups. The liraglutide group (n = 6) was injected subcutaneously with liraglutide. Another treatment group (n = 6) received subcutaneous insulin against hyperglycemia and hydralazine against hypertension for matching blood glucose levels and blood pressure with the liraglutide group. The control groups of SDT fatty (n = 7) and non-diabetic Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 7) were injected only with a vehicle. RESULTS: The control group of SDT fatty rats exhibited hyperglycemia, obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, glomerular sclerosis, and tubulointerstitial injury with high urinary albumin and L-FABP levels. Liraglutide treatment reduced body weight, food intake, blood glucose and blood pressure levels, as well as ameliorated renal pathologic findings with lower urinary albumin and L-FABP levels. Liraglutide increased expressions of phosphorylated (p)-eNOS and p-AMPK in glomeruli, downregulated renal expression of p-mTOR, and increased renal expressions of LC3B-II, suggesting activation of autophagy. However, these effects were not caused by the treatments with insulin and hydralazine, despite comparable levels of hyperglycemia and hypertension to those achieved with liraglutide treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Liraglutide may exert a renoprotective effect via prevention of glomerular endothelial abnormality and preservation of autophagy in early-phase DKD, independent of blood glucose, and blood pressure levels.

(1) Background: Absence seizures (ASs) are sudden, transient lapses of consciousness associated with lack of voluntary movements and generalized 2.5-4 Hz spike-wave discharges (SWDs) in the EEG. In addition to the thalamocortical system, where these pathological oscillations are generated, multiple neuronal circuits have been involved in their modulation and associated comorbidities including the serotonergic system. Neuronal activity in one of the major synaptic input structures to the brainstem dorsal raphé nucleus (DRN), the lateral hypothalamus (LH), has not been characterized. (2) Methods: We used viral tract tracing and optogenetics combined with in vitro and in vivo electrophysiology to assess the involvement of the LH in absence epilepsy in a genetic rodent model. (3) Results: We found that a substantial fraction of LH neurons project to the DRN of which a minority is GABAergic. The LH to DRN projection can lead to monosynaptic iGluR mediated excitation in DRN 5-HT neurons. Neuronal activity in the LH is coupled to SWDs. (4) Conclusions: Our results indicate that a brain area involved in the regulation of autonomic functions and heavily innervating the RN is involved in ASs. The decreased activity of LH neurons during SWDs could lead to both a decreased excitation and disinhibition in the DRN. These results support a long-range subcortical regulation of serotonergic neuromodulation during ASs and further our understanding of the state-dependence of these seizures and some of their associated comorbidities.

In an alignment of closely related genomic sequences, the existence of discordant mutation sites, which do not reflect the phylogenetic relationship of the genomes, is often observed. Although these discordant mutation sites are thought to have emerged by ancestral polymorphism or gene flow, their frequency and distribution in the genome have not yet been analyzed in detail. Using the genome sequences of all protein coding genes of 25 inbred rat strains, we analyzed the frequency and genome-wide distribution of the discordant mutation sites. From the comparison of different substrains, it was found that these loci are not substrain specific, but are common among different groups of substrains, suggesting that the discordant sites might have mainly emerged through ancestral polymorphism. It was also revealed that the discordant sites are not uniformly distributed along chromosomes, but are concentrated at certain genomic loci, such as RT1, major histocompatibility complex of rats, and olfactory receptors, indicating that genes known to be highly polymorphic tend to have more discordant sites. Our results also showed that loci with a high density of discordant sites are also rich in heterozygous variants, even though these are inbred strains.

OBJECTIVE: The role of α2A adrenergic receptors (α2A ARs) in absence epilepsy is not well characterized. Therefore, we investigated the outcomes of the specific antagonism of α2A ARs on the spike-and-wave discharges (SWDs) in genetic absence epilepsy rats from Strasbourg (GAERSs), together with its influence on the behavior and second messenger systems, which may point to the mechanisms to which a possible SWD modulation can be related. METHODS: Atipamezole, an α2A AR antagonist, was administered intracerebroventricularly to the adult GAERSs, and electroencephalography (EEG) was conducted. The cumulative duration and number of SWDs, and the mean duration of each SWD complex were counted. The relative power of the EEG frequency bands and behavioral activity after the acute application of two doses (12 and 31 µg/5 µL) of atipamezole were evaluated. The levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate and calcium/calmodulin-dependent kinase II (CaMKII) were measured in the cortex, thalamus, and hippocampus of naive Wistar rats and GAERSs, administered with artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) as a vehicle, or either acute or chronic atipamezole (12 µg), the latter being administered for 5 consecutive days. RESULTS: Atipamezole significantly suppressed SWDs dose-dependently, without affecting the relative power values of EEG frequency spectrum. The stereotypic activity was significantly lower in both naive Wistar rats and GAERSs receiving the highest dose (31 µg) of atipamezole compared to GAERSs receiving aCSF. In GAERSs, CaMKII levels were found to be higher in the thalamus after the acute and chronic application of SWD-suppressing doses of atipamezole (12 and 31 µg) compared to aCSF. SIGNIFICANCE: This study emphasizes the α2 AR-related modulation of absence epilepsy and particularly the significance of α2 AR antagonism in suppressing SWDs. Atipamezole's SWD-suppressive actions may be through CaMKII-mediated second messenger systems in the thalamus.

Place cells in the mammalian hippocampus signal self-location with sparse spatially stable firing fields. Based on observation of place cell activity it is possible to accurately decode an animal's location. The precision of this decoding sets a lower bound for the amount of information that the hippocampal population conveys about the location of the animal. In this work we use a novel recurrent neural network (RNN) decoder to infer the location of freely moving rats from single unit hippocampal recordings. RNNs are biologically plausible models of neural circuits that learn to incorporate relevant temporal context without the need to make complicated assumptions about the use of prior information to predict the current state. When decoding animal position from spike counts in 1D and 2D-environments, we show that the RNN consistently outperforms a standard Bayesian approach with either flat priors or with memory. In addition, we also conducted a set of sensitivity analysis on the RNN decoder to determine which neurons and sections of firing fields were the most influential. We found that the application of RNNs to neural data allowed flexible integration of temporal context, yielding improved accuracy relative to the more commonly used Bayesian approaches and opens new avenues for exploration of the neural code.
