RESUMO

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) affects 2.8 million Americans annually. AMR is identified through antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), but current and proposed regulatory policies from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) jeopardize the future availability of AST for many microorganisms. Devices that perform AST must be cleared by the FDA using their susceptibility test interpretive criteria, also known as breakpoints. The FDA list of breakpoints is relatively short. Today, laboratories supplement FDA breakpoints using breakpoints published by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, using legacy devices and laboratory-developed tests (LDTs). FDA proposes to regulate LDTs, and with no FDA breakpoints for many drug-bug combinations, the risk is loss of AST for key clinical indications and stifling innovation in technology development. Effective solutions require collaboration between manufacturers, infectious diseases clinicians, pharmacists, laboratories, and the FDA.

RESUMO

Amoxicillin-clavulanate (AMC) is among the most frequently prescribed antibiotics globally. It has broad antibacterial activity against gram-positive, gram-negative, and anaerobic bacteria and has been used to treat infections caused by a broad range of pathogens. AMC breakpoints against Enterobacterales were initially set in the 1980s. However, since that time, increases in antibiotic resistance, advances in pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic analyses, and publication of additional clinical data prompted a reassessment by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) Subcommittee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing. Based on this contemporary reappraisal, the CLSI retained the Enterobacterales breakpoints but revised comments regarding dosing associated with use of the AMC breakpoints in the 2022 supplement of M100. This viewpoint provides insight into the CLSI breakpoint reevaluation process and summarizes the data and rationale used to support these revisions to the AMC Enterobacterales breakpoint.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the performance of an in-house developed disk diffusion method for aztreonam in combination with avibactam against Enterobacteriales. METHODS: The in vitro antibacterial activity of aztreonam with avibactam against 204 carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriales was determined by a disk diffusion method, with a broth microdilution method as a reference. RESULTS: The optimal S/R breakpoints for disk diffusion tests of 30/20 and 10/4 µg disks, calculated by the dBETs software using the model-based approaches, were ≥22/≤21 and ≥12/≤11 mm, respectively. On the basis of the estimated breakpoints, the CAs for disk diffusion tests of 30/20 and 10/4 µg aztreonam/avibactam disks were both 98.0%, with 0.5% major error and 37.5% very major error. CONCLUSIONS: The home-made disk diffusion method is an economical and practical method for clinical microbiology laboratories to determine the antibacterial susceptibility of aztreonam with avibactam against Enterobacteriales.

OBJECTIVES: MDR and XDR Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains remain major public health concerns internationally, and quality-assured global gonococcal antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance is imperative. The WHO global Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Programme (GASP) and WHO Enhanced GASP (EGASP), including metadata and WGS, are expanding internationally. We present the phenotypic, genetic and reference genome characteristics of the 2024 WHO gonococcal reference strains (n = 15) for quality assurance worldwide. All superseded WHO gonococcal reference strains (n = 14) were identically characterized. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The 2024 WHO reference strains include 11 of the 2016 WHO reference strains, which were further characterized, and four novel strains. The superseded WHO reference strains include 11 WHO reference strains previously unpublished. All strains were characterized phenotypically and genomically (single-molecule PacBio or Oxford Nanopore and Illumina sequencing). RESULTS: The 2024 WHO reference strains represent all available susceptible and resistant phenotypes and genotypes for antimicrobials currently and previously used (n = 22), or considered for future use (n = 3) in gonorrhoea treatment. The novel WHO strains include internationally spreading ceftriaxone resistance, ceftriaxone resistance due to new penA mutations, ceftriaxone plus high-level azithromycin resistance and azithromycin resistance due to mosaic MtrRCDE efflux pump. AMR, serogroup, prolyliminopeptidase, genetic AMR determinants, plasmid types, molecular epidemiological types and reference genome characteristics are presented for all strains. CONCLUSIONS: The 2024 WHO gonococcal reference strains are recommended for internal and external quality assurance in laboratory examinations, especially in the WHO GASP, EGASP and other GASPs, but also in phenotypic and molecular diagnostics, AMR prediction, pharmacodynamics, epidemiology, research and as complete reference genomes in WGS analysis.

BACKGROUND: The increase in antibiotic resistance is a major public health issue. The development of rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) methods is becoming a priority to ensure early and appropriate antibiotic therapy. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate sedimentation field-flow fractionation (SdFFF) as a method for performing AST in less than 3 h. METHODS: SdFFF is based on the detection of early biophysical changes in bacteria, using a chromatographic-type technology. One hundred clinical Escherichia coli strains were studied. A calibrated bacterial suspension was incubated for 2 h at 37°C in the absence (untreated) or presence (treated) of five antibiotics used at EUCAST breakpoint concentrations. Bacterial suspensions were then injected into the SdFFF machine. For each E. coli isolate, retention times and elution profiles of antibiotic-treated bacteria were compared with retention times and elution profiles of untreated bacteria. Algorithms comparing retention times and elution profiles were used to determine if the strain was susceptible or resistant. Performance evaluation was done according to CLSI and the ISO standard 20776-2:2021 with broth microdilution used as the reference method. RESULTS: AST results from SdFFF were obtained in less than 3 h. SdFFF showed high categorical agreement (99.8%), sensitivity (99.5%) and specificity (100.0%) with broth microdilution. Results for each antimicrobial were also in agreement with the ISO 20776-2 recommendations, with sensitivity and specificity of ≥95.0%. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that SdFFF can be used as a rapid, accurate and reliable phenotypic AST method with a turnaround time of less than 3 h.

Since its inception in 2002, the EUCAST Antifungal Susceptibility Testing Subcommittee (AFST) has developed and refined susceptibility testing methods for yeast, moulds and dermatophytes, and established epidemiological cut-off values and breakpoints for antifungals. For yeast, three challenges have been addressed. Interpretation of trailing growth in fluconazole susceptibility testing, which has been proven without impact on efficacy if below the 50% endpoint. Variability in rezafungin MIC testing due to laboratory conditions, which has been solved by the addition of Tween 20 to the growth medium in E.Def 7.4. And third, interpretation of MICs for rare yeast with no breakpoints, where recommendations have been established for MIC-based clinical advice. For moulds, refinements include the validation of spectrophotometer reading for A. fumigatus to facilitate objective MIC determination, and for dermatophytes the establishment of a microdilution method with automated reading and a selective medium to minimise the risk of contaminations. Recent initiatives involve development and validation of agar-based screening assays for detection of potential azole and echinocandin resistance in A. fumigatus and Aspergillus species, respectively, and of terbinafine resistance in Trichophyton species. Moreover, the development of a EUCAST guidance document for molecular resistance testing represents an advancement, particularly for identifying target gene alterations associated with resistance. In summary, EUCAST AFST continues to play a pivotal role in standardizing AFST and facilitating accurate interpretation of susceptibility data for clinical decision-making. Adoption of EUCAST breakpoints for commercial test methods, however, requires thorough validation to ensure concordance with EUCAST reference testing species-specific MIC distributions.

Tuberculosis continues to be an important public health problem worldwide. Culture methods are still considered the gold standard in the diagnosis of tuberculosis and the determination of drug resistance. The most important limitation of these methods is their long turnaround time. Commercial culture systems developed to shorten the duration are emerging as an economic problem, especially for developing countries. Therefore, cheap, fast, easy to apply and objectively evaluable tests are needed. In this study, in addition to culture-based methods for determining RIF and INH resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex isolates, it was aimed to develop the capillary tube method to accelerate the evaluation process. The study included 27 RIF-resistant, 36 RIF -sensitive, 30 INH-resistant, and 33 INH-sensitive isolates obtained from the mycobacteriology laboratory culture collection, for which susceptibility testing to firstline drugs were previously performed using the BACTEC MGIT 960 system (BD, USA) and were stored. H37Rv standard strain and an external quality control strain (IDT3) with known RIF and INH resistance were used as quality control isolates in the study. As a new testing method, the capillary tube method for detecting rifampicin and isoniazid resistance was compared to the standard BACTEC MGIT 960 system. In the determination of RIF and INH resistance, the sensitivity of the capillary tube method compared to the reference method was determined as 85% and 80%, respectively; however, the specificity values (25% and 45.5%, respectively) for both drugs were found to be low in the studies. The time to detect resistance with the capillary tube method varied between 4-9 days. Capillary tube method, which was developed especially for the rapid identification and treatment of multidrug-resistant isolates, is promising in that it detects resistant strains in a short time with a relatively high sensitivity, although its specificity is very low. It is thought that it would be beneficial to continue the study with a larger number of samples and even improve the method with studies conducted directly from clinical samples.

Although not as ubiquitous as antibacterial susceptibility testing, antifungal susceptibility testing (AFST) is a tool of increasing importance in clinical microbiology laboratories. The goal of AFST is to reliably produce MIC values that may be used to guide patient therapy, inform epidemiological studies, and track rates of antifungal drug resistance. There are three methods that have been standardized by standards development organizations: broth dilution, disk diffusion, and azole agar screening for Aspergillus Other commonly used methods include gradient diffusion and the use of rapid automated instruments. Novel methodologies for susceptibility testing are in development. It is important for laboratories to consider not only the method of testing but also the interpretation (or lack thereof) of in vitro data.

BACKGROUND: Nocardia species are ubiquitous in natural environments and can cause nocardiosis. In the present study, the use of Resazurin salt and Spectrophotometry were proposed as alternative methods to reduce subjectivity in the interpretation of susceptibility results to antimicrobials by the broth microdilution method for Nocardia spp. RESULTS: The susceptibility of Nocardia spp. isolates to Amikacin, Ciprofloxacin, Minocycline and Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole was evaluated by Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) determinations by the broth microdilution method. To verify cellular growth, the colour-changing dye Resazurin was applied, the Optical Densities were measured on a spectrophotometer, and both were compared to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) Gold Standard method (visual MIC determination). Percentages of essential and categorical agreements and interpretative categorical errors were calculated within each method (intra-reading) and between them (inter-reading). The Gold Standard visual reading demonstrated 100% of essential and categorical intra-reading agreements for Amikacin, and there was no error when compared with the alternative methods. For Ciprofloxacin, the comparison between the Gold Standard and the Spectrophotometric reading showed 91.5% of essential agreement. In the categorical intra-reading analysis for Minocycline, there were 88.1 and 91.7% in the Gold Standard and in the Spectrophotometric readings, respectively, and 86.4% of concordance between them. High rates of categorical agreement were also observed on the Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole analyses, with 93.7% for the Gold Standard, 84.9% for the Resazurin readings, and 80.5% between them. CONCLUSIONS: The alternative methods with Resazurin and Spectrophotometric readings showed high agreement rates with the Gold Standard.

BACKGROUND: Conventional turnaround time (TAT) for positive blood culture (PBC) identification (ID) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) is 2-3 days. We evaluated the TAT and ID/AST performance using clinical and seeded samples directly from PBC bottles with different commercial approaches: (1) Accelerate Pheno® system (Pheno) for ID/AST; (2) BioFire® FilmArray® Blood Culture Identification (BCID) Panel and/ or BCID2 for ID; (3) direct AST by VITEK® 2 (direct AST); and (4) overnight culture using VITEK® 2 colony AST. RESULTS: A total of 141 PBC samples were included in this evaluation. Using MALDI-TOF (Bruker MALDI Biotyper) as the reference method for ID, the overall monomicrobial ID sensitivity/specificity are as follows: Pheno 97.9/99.9%; BCID 100/100%; and BCID2 100/100%, respectively. For AST performance, broth microdilution (BMD) was used as the reference method. For gram-negatives, overall categorical and essential agreements (CA/EA) for each method were: Pheno 90.3/93.2%; direct AST 92.6/88.5%; colony AST 94.4/89.5%, respectively. For gram-positives, the overall CA/EAs were as follows: Pheno 97.2/98.89%; direct AST 97.2/100%; colony AST 97.2/100%, respectively. The BCID/BCID2 and direct AST TATs were around 9-20 h (1/9-19 h for ID with resistance markers/AST), with 15 min/sample hands-on time. In comparison, Pheno TATs were around 8-10 h (1.5/7 h for ID/AST) with 2 min/sample hands-on time, maintains a clinically relevant fast report of antibiotic minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and allows for less TAT and hands-on time. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study conducted as such in Asia; all studied approaches achieved satisfactory performance, factors such as TAT, panel of antibiotics choices and hands-on time should be considered for the selection of appropriate rapid ID and AST of PBC methods in different laboratory settings.

Increasing burden of carbapenem resistance and resultant difficult-to-treat infections are of particular concern due to the lack of effective and safe treatment options. More recently, several new agents with activity against certain multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensive drug-resistant (XDR) Gram-negative pathogens have been approved for clinical use. These include ceftazidime-avibactam, meropenem-vaborbactam, imipenem-cilastatin-relebactam, plazomicin, and cefiderocol. For the management of MBL infections, clinically used triple combination comprising ceftazidime-avibactam and aztreonam is hindered due to non-availability of antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods and lack of information on potential drug-drug interaction leading to PK changes impacting its safety and efficacy. Moreover, in several countries including Indian subcontinent and developing countries, these new agents are yet to be made available. Under these circumstances, polymyxins are the only last resort for the treatment of carbapenem-resistant infections. With the recent evidence of suboptimal PK/PD particularly in lung environment, limited efficacy and increased nephrotoxicity associated with polymyxin use, the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) has revised both colistin and polymyxin B breakpoints. Thus, polymyxins 'intermediate' breakpoint for Enterobacterales, P. aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter spp. are now set at ≤ 2 mg/L, implying limited clinical efficacy even for isolates with the MIC value 2 mg/L. This change has questioned the dependency on polymyxins in treating XDR infections. In this context, recently approved cefiderocol and phase 3 stage combination drug cefepime-zidebactam assume greater significance due to their potential to act as polymyxin-supplanting therapies.

BACKGROUND: Dermatophytosis is one of the most common infections affecting 3%-17% of the population. Resistance to antifungals so far was not of concern in the therapeutic management. However, recent reports of terbinafine-resistant strains in several countries are worrisome making antifungal susceptibility testing inevitable. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to develop and evaluate an optimised broth microdilution assay for antifungal drug susceptibility testing of dermatophytes. METHODS: We first studied the effect of different inocula, incubation temperatures and incubation times to establish an optimised assay. Subsequently, we tested 79 clinical strains of 11 dermatophyte species with 13 antifungals. RESULTS: We found inoculating with 0.5-5 × 104 colony forming units (CFU) and incubating at 29°C ± 1°C for 4 days to be appropriate. Terbinafine was the most active antifungal agent with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ≤ 0.06 µg/mL, expect for one resistant T mentagrophytes strain, which was isolated from an Indian patient. Also, a majority of MICs of other antifungals that are commonly used to treat dermatophytosis were low, except those of fluconazole. Fluconazole MICs do not correlate with the good efficacy in the clinical management. CONCLUSIONS: Our assay enables fast and reliable susceptibility testing of dermatophytes with a large panel of different antifungals. This helps to improve the therapeutic management of dermatophytosis by detecting resistant strains.

Blood stream infections pose a major challenge for clinicians as the immediate application of an appropriate antibiotic treatment is the vital factor to safe the patients' lives. This preliminary study compares three different systems promising fast pathogen identification and susceptibility testing in comparison to conventional blood culture (BC): (i) the rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing protocol according to EUCAST in combination with the Sepsityper® kit (sRAST), (ii) the direct inoculation method on the VITEK® 2 system (dVIT) and (iii) testing with the Accelerate Pheno® system (AccPh). All methods were assessed in terms of accuracy, time to result and usability. Twenty-three BC samples obtained from patients suffering from proven sepsis were analysed in detail. Pathogen identification was successful in 95·6, 91·3 and 91·3% in sRAST, dVIT and AccPh, respectively. Categorical agreement in antimicrobial susceptibility testing was 89·5, 96 and 96·6%, respectively. Time to result from sample entry to reporting ranged from an average of 4·6 h for sRAST and 6·9 h for AccPh to 10·6 h for dVIT. These results imply a significant shortening of reporting times at considerably high agreement rates for these new diagnostic approaches.

BACKGROUND: Impetigo, a highly contagious bacterial skin infection commonly occurring in young children, but adults may also be affected. The superficial skin infection is mainly caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and less frequently by Streptococcus pyogenes (S. pyogenes). Antimicrobial resistance has become a worldwide concern and needs to be addressed when selecting treatment for impetigo patients. An evidence-based impetigo treatment algorithm was developed to address the treatment of impetigo for pediatric and adult populations. METHODS: An international panel of pediatric dermatologists, dermatologists, pediatricians, and pediatric infectious disease specialists employed a modified Delphi technique to develop the impetigo treatment algorithm. Treatment recommendations were evidence-based, taking into account antimicrobial stewardship and the increasing resistance to oral and topical antibiotics. RESULTS: The algorithm includes education and prevention of impetigo, diagnosis and classification, treatment measures, and follow-up and distinguishes between localized and widespread or epidemic outbreaks of impetigo. The panel adopted the definition of localized impetigo of fewer than ten lesions and smaller than 36 cm2 area affected in patients of two months and up with no compromised immune status. Resistance to oral and topical antibiotics prescribed for the treatment of impetigo such as mupirocin, retapamulin, fusidic acid, have been widely reported. CONCLUSIONS: When prescribing antibiotics, it is essential to know the local trends in antibiotic resistance. We compared MIC test strip (MTS) and Sensititre YeastOne (SYO) methods with EUCAST and CLSI methods for amphotericin B, 5-fluocytosine, fluconazole, voriconazole, and isavuconazole against 106 Cryptococcus neoformans isolates. The overall essential agreement between the EUCAST and CLSI methods was >72% and >94% at ±1 and ±2 dilutions, respectively. The essential agreements between SYO and EUCAST/CLSI for amphotericin B, 5-flucytosine, fluconazole, and voriconazole were >89/>93% and between MTS and EUCAST/CLSI were >57/>75%. Very major error rates were low for amphotericin B and fluconazole (<3%) and a bit higher for the other drugs (<8%).

The polymyxins are important agents for carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacilli. The United States Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing breakpoint recommendations for colistin and polymyxin B are that isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Enterobacteriaceae are considered susceptible at MIC values of ≤2 mg/liter. These recommendations are contingent upon dosing and testing strategies that are described in this commentary. Importantly, these recommendations are not applicable to lower respiratory tract infections, for which we recommend no breakpoints. Furthermore, there is no breakpoint recommendation for polymyxin B for lower urinary tract infections.

Our objective was to evaluate EUCAST's 'rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing' (RAST) directly from positive blood culture that delivers antimicrobial results within 6 h for Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus spp., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, using total lab automation. Zone diameters from RAST were compared with MIC results. Furthermore, its influence on time to report was investigated. RAST was performed to all positive aerobic and anaerobic blood culture bottles by subculturing them, i.e. onto Mueller-Hinton agar and adding six antibiotic discs covering Gram-negative and Gram-positive therapy (cefoxitin, ampicillin, vancomycin, piperacillin/tazobactam, meropenem and ciprofloxacin). RAST was automatically imaged after 6 h. Zone sizes were measured using a TLA software tool and interpreted according to EUCAST clinical breakpoints. Bacteria were identified using MALDI-TOF MS and MIC results were determined using Vitek2 panels. Categorial agreement between agar diffusion and MIC results was investigated. Additionally, time to RAST and time to Vitek were compared for 100 isolates (20 per species). Between November 2018 and April 2019, 3313 positive mono-bacterial blood culture bottles were collected of which 894 bottles with RAST-validated species were investigated. Among these bottles, 2029 individual antibiotic measurements were compared with MIC results from Vitek2 and 14 very major, 28 major and 12 minor errors were found. A median reduction of 17:30 h in time to report was observed. Introduction of RAST with automatic TLA imaging function could reduce time to report by 17:30 h. Excellent accordance between zone diameter and MIC results, particularly for cefoxitin, vancomycin and meropenem, was observed, but drawbacks due to ATU were seen.

The aim of our study was to evaluate the performance of conventional drug susceptibility testing (DST) among the tuberculosis (TB)-specialized hospitals in China. A total of 40 hospitals participated in the external quality assurance program for assessment of DST results from each hospital. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of DST were analyzed. The mean accuracy was 96.5% for isoniazid (INH), 95.8% for rifampin (RIF), 97.0% for ethambutol (EMB), 96.8% for ofloxacin (OFX), 97.1% for kanamycin (KAN), 96.1% for amikacin (AMK), and 93.6% for capreomycin (CAP), respectively. Of the 40 participating laboratories, 4 (10.0%) and 6 (15%) failed to achieve 90% accuracy for INH and RIF, respectively. In addition, six hospitals (15%) were confirmed as certified to provide reliable DST results for both first-line and second-line drugs. The certified proportion for DST dropped from 73.9% in the non-western region to 59.2% in the western region. The significant difference was observed in the certified proportion for first-line drugs between the western and non-western region (P = 0.013). Our results demonstrate that the quality of phenotypical DST is frequently unsatisfactory, with approximately one-third of participated laboratories failing to produce certified phenotypical DST results. In addition, the uncertified laboratories majorly come from the western region in China.

Several rapid non-commercial culture-based methods and assays for drug susceptibility testing (DST) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis have emerged over the last decades. The aim of the current review was to summarise evidence on the performance of microscopic observation of drug susceptibility (MODS), thin-layer agar (TLA) and colorimetric redox-indicator (CRI) assays for detection of resistance to first- and second-line anti-tuberculosis (TB) drugs. Forty-three publications satisfying selection criteria were selected for data extraction. MODS and CRI assays demonstrated pooled sensitivity and specificity of > 93% for the detection of resistance to rifampicin and isoniazid and confirmed their utility for an accurate detection of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) in various settings. Sensitivity and specificity values for indirect DST for ethambutol (EMB) using CRI assays were 94.0% and 82.0%, respectively, suggesting that CRIs could be used to rule out resistance to EMB. Performance for other drugs varied more substantially across the reports. There was no sufficient evidence on the performance of the TLA assay for making any conclusion on its utility for DST. Our data suggests that non-commercial assays could be used for a rapid and accurate DST in settings where the use of commercial World Health Organization-endorsed assays could be limited due to a variety of reasons including limited resources, laboratory facilities or trained personnel. While inexpensive and easy-to-perform MODS and TLA assays can be used in low-income settings, using CRI assays for determination of minimal inhibitory concentrations may be implemented in middle- and high-income countries with high MDR-TB burden to guide clinical management of TB patients.

The aim of this study was to evaluate a colorimetric method, MIRONAUT-AM, for determining susceptibility testing of anidulafungin, amphotericin, voriconazole, and itraconazole by comparing the minimum inhibitory (effective) concentrations (MICs/MECs) obtained by this method to those generated by the reference Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI) broth microdilution method. In sum, 78 clinical isolates of Aspergillus species, nine of them non-wild type (non-WT) with itraconazole MIC ranging from 2 mg/l to >16 mg/l, were tested against above antifungals. A. fumigatus ATCC 204305 was used as a reference strain, and test was performed in accordance with slightly modified yeast susceptibility testing instruction of the manufacture; conidia suspension inoculum and alamarBlue concentration were optimized. These same isolates were referred to Bristol Mycology reference laboratory and tested by CLSI method. The MICs and MECs generated by the two methods were compared using concordance analysis. MIRONAUT-AM showed significant concordance (P < .0001) with CLSI method, and overall agreement was high (≥90%). In addition, MIRONAUT-AM produced echinocandin MECs results within 18-24 hours incubation time and correctly detected all non-WT isolates except one isolate. This colorimetric method is very promising and appears to be a suitable alternative susceptibility testing method to labor intensive broth microdilution reference method for Aspergillus species.
