Objetivo:
Analisar as práticas de aleitamento materno na Estratégia Saúde da Família.Métodos:
Estudo transversal, descritivo, de abordagem quantitativa, realizado em Unidades de Saúde da Família da zona urbana do município de Iguatu-CE, Brasil, de agosto de 2008 a maio de 2009. Participaram da pesquisa 402 mães com filhos de até seis meses de idade que realizaram consultas de pré-natal. Foi utilizado um formulário com perguntas referentes à amamentação, dificuldades na amamentação, introdução de outros alimentos, alimentação infantil, realização de consultas pré-natais e visitas puerperais realizadas pela equipe. Os dados foram digitados no Programa SPSS 16.0, sendo analisados descritivamente.Resultados:
Dentre as mães entrevistadas (402), a maioria referiu que estava amamentando os bebês (N = 343; 85,3%), mas introduzia outro alimento (N = 252; 62,6%), verificando-se prevalência baixa de aleitamento materno exclusivo. Das 252 entrevistadas que referiram oferecer outro alimento ao bebê, 158 (62,7%) ofereciam por conta própria, seguida daquelas que optavam por seguir a indicação de familiares e vizinhos (N = 63; 25%).Conclusões:
O estudo revelou que as mães das Unidades de Saúde da Família de Iguatu-CE não amamentavam os filhos de forma exclusiva, mas com a introdução de outros alimentos (outro leite, mingau), demonstrando, assim, a baixa prevalência do aleitamento materno exclusivo.Objective:

A descriptive cross-sectional quantitative study conducted in Family Health Units of the urban area of Iguatu-CE, Brazil, from August 2008 to May 2009. Participants were 402 mothers with children under six months of age who underwent prenatal consultations. We used a form with questions regarding breastfeeding, breastfeeding difficulties, introducing other foods, infant nutrition, consultations prenatal and postpartum visits undertaken by staff. The data were entered into SPSS 16.0 and analyzed descriptively.Results:
Among the mothers interviewed (402), most said that was breastfeeding babies (N = 343, 85.3%), but introduced other food (N = 252, 62.6%), verifying low prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding. Of the 252 women who reported offering other food to baby, 158 (62.7%) offered on their own, followed by those who chose to follow the indication of relatives and neighbors (N = 63, 25%).Conclusions:
The study revealed that mothers of the Family Health Units from Iguatu-EC did not breastfeed their children exclusively, but with the introduction of other foods (other milk, porridge), thereby demonstrating the low prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding.
