ABSTRACT: Osmotic dehydration (OD) is a technique used for the partial removal of water from foodstuff, including fruit and vegetables, with the aim of producing a desiccated product. The process involves placing the material in a hypertonic solution for several hours and allowing water to move from the cell compartment into the solution by osmosis. OD is influenced by various factors such as the concentration and composition of the osmotic solution, the solution temperature, the type of agitation and the time of exposure, as well as the size, shape and compactness of the food material. The main advantages of OD over conventional drying processes are the superior quality of the dried products and the minimization of shrinkage. In recent years, research effort has focused on the combination of OD with other technologies, such as ultrasound, cryogenic freezing with liquid nitrogen, pulsed electric field, gamma radiation and high hydrostatic pressure. The application of these methods prior to or concomitant with OD accelerates mass transfer and reduces the drying rate of fruit and vegetables by increasing the permeability of cell membranes. In this manner, combined processes tend to be more efficient and economical in comparison with conventional OD because they reduce operating times and; consequently, energy consumption. In addition, the dried products generated by such coupled processes typically exhibit improved nutritional and physicochemical characteristics. This review summarizes the basic principles and applications of OD in combination with other methods, with particular emphasis on the production of dried fruits.

The wax apple or jambu madu, is a non-climacteric tropical fruit from Myrtaceae family and widely cultivated in South East Asia. The limited availability of good quality seedlings of wax apple is the main problem to development of flourish it's market share in the current fruit industry. Therefore, in order to produce good quality planting materials, a study aimed at optimizing propagation and adventitious rooting technique and survivability of wax apple air layer was conducted. In this study, four different levels of Indole-3-Butyric Acid (IBA) concentration (0, 1000, 1500 and 2000 mg L-1) and three rooting media (sphagnum moss, vermicompost and garden soil) were applied after removal of bark (phloem) on the shoot to determine the effect on rooting and survivability of the wax apple air layer under field conditions. The results showed that the wax apple shoots treated with 2000 mg L-1 IBA produced the significantly higher number of roots, increased length of root, diameter of branch, length of branch, number of leaf and leaf area of air layers. In addition, the highest chlorophyll content and stomatal aperture were recorded in 2000 mg L-1 IBA treatment compared to other treatments including control. Vermicompost medium was better than garden soil and sphagnum moss in respect of rooting and survivability of air layers. The results showed that the combination of 2000 mg L-1 IBA and vermicompost as rooting media give the best combination to root initiation, root number, root length and survival rate (100%) of wax apple air layers. From this study, it can be concluded that 2000 mg L-1 IBA and vermicompost treatment enhance the root initiation, early establishment and survivability of wax apple air layered under field conditions.

This study assessed and compared different methods for vegetative propagation of a miniature ornamental pineapple hybrid (ORN-MUT), seeking to determine the best method for production of plantlets, as well as for removal of the PMWaV viral complex from plants cultured in vitro, for production of healthy parent plants. Pineapple wilt is a disease that can cause large economic and is caused by a viral complex called Pineapple mealybug wilt-associated virus (PMWaV). For this, four propagation methods were evaluated (conventional, stem sectioning, micropropagation and etiolation of nodal segments). The time necessary for each method and the number of plants formed were assessed. Stem tips (0.5 mm) were cultured and indexed for three PMWaV types. Conventional propagation produced 17 plantlets per plant in 566 days, stem sectioning produced 2.3 plantlets per stem in 591 days, while the conventional micropropagation technique produced 1,284 plants after four subcultures in 778 days. Stems etiolated for 60 days showed peak production in the second subculture, with 1,224 plants. This method required 883 days to obtain plants with ideal size for transplantation to the field. In turn, stems etiolated for 120 days produced 935 plants at the end of four subcultures, with peak output in the third subculture, in which the plants could be cultivated in the field after 943 days. Conventional micropropagation and etiolation for 60 days were the best methods for production of plantlets of the ORN-MUT hybrid. The results of this work showed that the cultivation of shoot tips is an efficient strategy to remove the PMWaV complex and obtain healthy mother plants and can be a useful tool for other varieties of pineapple.

Bird frugivory is modulated by environmental variables, wherein some variables are related to plant species and some are related to the surrounding habitat ( Saracco et al., 2005 ; Pizo and Almeida Neto, 2009 ; Gagetti et al., 2016 ). Although several studies have investigated the influence of such variables on fruit removal by birds, no study focused on Cecropia, an emblematic plant genus and one of the most preferred food sources for frugivorous animals in the Neotropical region ( Oniki et al., 1994 ). Cecropia pachystachya Trécul (Urticaceae), as other species of the genus, is a common plant typical of the initial phases of ecological succession that attracts many frugivorous animals. Some studies have investigated the relationship between frugivorous birds and C. paschystachya ( Marcondes-Machado and Oliveira, 1988 ; Gonçalves and Vitorino, 2014 ). Nevertheless, there is a lack of studies that investigate the influence of individual and habitat features on the removal of C. paschystachya fruits by birds. Therefore, our main goal was to record the interactions between birds and C. paschystachya to examine which variables (height, crop size and richness of plant species fruiting nearby) may influence bird frugivory events.(AU)

Background: Digestive disturbances in ruminants are associated with forage shortages during periods of dry weather. Foodsavailable at this time are generally of poor quality and low digestibility, which makes it necessary to pursue alternativefood sources where available. Grain-heavy diets; concentrated rations rich in rapidly fermenting carbohydrates; and whey, tubers and fruits high in starch and glucose, contribute to ruminal acidosis. Here we report a case of ruminal acidosis dueto excessive ingestion of the mango fruit (Mangifera indica), “manguita” cultivate, by an adult bovine.Case: In the municipality of Boa Vista, Roraima, during December, a Dutch female bovine adult, weighing approximately600 kg, was observed showing signs of apathy for two days with diarrhea. The animal had a rumenostomy with flexiblecannula in the left paralumbar fossa and was in the final third of gestation. During clinical examination, the animal was inseason, and an increase in the volume of the left dorsal region and changes in physiological variables were observed (lightlypale mucosa, capillary filling time of 4 s, heart rate [HR] of 82 beats per min; respiratory rate (f) of 30 moments per min;absence of ruminal movements and rectal temperature [RT] of 39.5°C). Upon removal of the cannula lid, a considerableamount of liquid and a large quantity of mango (Mangifera indica), “manguita” cultivate, were observed. Blood sampleand ruminal fluid were collected and ruminal contents weighing approximately 40 kg were evacuated. Physical-chemicalanalysis of the ruminal liquid (pH = 4.0, brown color, aqueous consistency and characteristic fruit odor) resulted in adiagnosis of ruminal acidosis. Treatment included administration of fluid therapy (Lactate Ringer; 2 mL/kg/h), hepatoprotector (1 mL/20 kg), antimicrobial (Ampicillin Sodium; 10 mg/kg/IV and Sulfadoxine; 30 mg/kg/IV) and non-steroidalanti-inflammatory (Meloxicam; 0.5 mg/kg/IV) drugs, associated with evacuation...

Enzymes play a fundamental role in degradation of molecules during seed germination, development, and deterioration. Endo--mannanase is one of the main enzymes responsible for hydrolysis of mannans in the endosperm during germination of coffee seeds through its action in hydrolytic degradation of cell walls and in weakening the structures of the endosperm that surround the embryo, allowing radicle emergence. The aim of this study was to determine the activity of the endo--mannanase enzyme in the structures of coffee seeds for the purpose of assessing the relationship between this activity and the physiological quality of the seeds under different processing and drying methods. Coffea arabica L. fruit in the cherry maturity stage was subjected to three different types of processing: natural (seeds maintained in the fruit itself), fully washed (fruit pulped mechanically and the seeds demucilaged by fermentation in water), and semi-washed or demucilaged (both fruit pulp and mucilage removed mechanically); and two methods of drying: slow drying (suspended screen) in the shade, and rapid drying in mechanical dryer at 35°C to a moisture content of 11±1%. After processing and drying, the physiological quality of the seeds was evaluated through the germination test, and endo--mannanase enzyme activity was quantified. Coffee seeds submitted to natural processing have lower physiological performance, as well as greater deterioration and greater activity of the endo-ß-mannanase enzyme. Removal of mucilage during fully washed and semi-washed processing of coffee seeds reduces the activity of the endo-ß-mannanase enzyme and lowers deterioration, especially after faster drying. The enzyme endo-ß-mannanase is efficient in studying of the effects of processing and drying on coffee seeds, and can be evaluated in whole seeds, endosperms or embryos.(AU)

Temperate fruit growing has great potential for development in Brazil, the use of chemical products is increasing more and more in the present day, being a problem if used in a wrong way, therefore the use of other forms of cultural the case of manual thinning in fruits presents itself as an alternative to small producing areas. The objective of this work was to analyze the start and end dates of flowering and fruiting cycles and some physical and chemical qualities of Japanese plum fruits (Prunus salicina Lind) as well as the influence of manual thinning on these qualities in fruits obtained from different accessions of plum produced by IAPAR. The experiment was carried out in the city of Ponta Grossa-PR at the Regional Research Center of IAPAR. The experiment was carried out in a 7x2 factorial scheme, composed of seven Japanese plum accesses (Prunus salicina Lind) and two treatments with manual thinning in the fruits and without manual thinning and six replications. The fruits were harvested and the characteristics of fruit diameter, fruit mass, seed mass, fruit pulp mass, total soluble solids, titrizable total acidity and ratio. The manual thinning performed on the plum fruits showed a significant increase in fruit diameter and fruit mass, stone mass and pulp mass. This increase was mainly due to the removal of fruits, reducing the competition for sap and photoassimilates between the fruits. However, the fruits did not show any variation in the results in the analyzes of total soluble solids, total acidity and titrable ratio, showing that even with the accomplishment of this tract culture did not affect these characteristics, with this it is possible to conclude that the accesses studied present a capacity of launching as new cultivars adapted to the climate of the city of Ponta Grossa-PR, and that the manual thinning in the fruits is an alternative to the realization of small areas bringing positive results in the physical qualities of the fruits.

However, the fruits did not show any variation in the results in the analyzes of total soluble solids, total acidity and titrable ratio, showing that even with the accomplishment of this tract culture did not affect these characteristics, with this it is possible to conclude that the accesses studied present a capacity of launching as new cultivars adapted to the climate of the city of Ponta Grossa-PR, and that the manual thinning in the fruits is an alternative to the realization of small areas bringing positive results in the physical qualities of the fruits.(AU)

Postharvest diseases are a major problem in guava crops as the symptoms normally appear during fruit ripening. This study aimed to detect and characterize the temporal dynamics and spatial patterns of the most important guava diseases in orchards with and without removal of crop residues as a sanitation practice. The experiment was conducted in an orchard of Pedro Sato guavas, over two consecutive seasons, and data were collected from the flowering to the fruit ripening stage. In immature guavas treated with paraquat and ethrel, Colletotrichum spp. was detected from the 5th day of incubation. Anthracnose was detected in flowers at incidences higher than 50 % and black spot in fruit larger than 5.5 cm in length. The monomolecular and the exponential models provided the best fit to anthracnose and black spot incidence progress curve data, respectively. Both diseases showed a predominantly random spatial pattern in the orchard. The removal of crop residues reduced the rate of disease progress in at least one season, and was effective in reducing the areas under the quiescent disease progress curves (AUDPC) of anthracnose. Anthracnose incidence increased from 57 to 96 % and black spot from 1 to 48 %, respectively, at fruit maturation levels 1 and 3. A negative correlation was found between disease incidence and the color of the fruit skin (°h). Fruit harvested during the later maturation stages showed higher incidence of the diseases. Due to the wide distribution and early infection of quiescent diseases, starting at flowering, preventive management should consider disease monitoring and removal of crop residues.

Euterpe edulis Martius (Arecaceae) is considered one of the most important palm trees for the dispersing and pollinating fauna in the Atlantic Forest. However, the predatory exploitation of the palm heart has been causing its decline and extinction throughout the Atlantic Forest. The aim of this study was to identify the interactions between mammals and birds with Juçara palm, as well as contribute to the understanding of the ecological processes of seed dispersal and germination. The study was carried out in the municipality of Maquiné, state of Rio Grande do Sul, in an area of Dense Ombrophylous Forest belonging to Fundação Estadual de Pesquisa Agropecuária (FEPAGRO). Mammals and birds were recorded with six camera traps, focal (tree-focal) observation and transections. Germination experiments were also performed and differences were tested using Biostat 5.3 software. Twelve months of study resulted in over 1300 videos with a sampling effort of 334 camera days. In 1180 videos, the fauna interacted directly with the fruits of E. edulis, totaling 1245 interactions. In 38% of these, fruits were consumed, which were carried in 37% of these records and in 25%, swallowed. In total, 17 species were recorded, 12 birds and five mammals. Of these, small rodents were the ones that consumed or carried the fruits the most (N = 616 or 65%). Of the birds, four Turdus species consumed, swallowed or carried 322 fruits (33%). The percentage and / or the germination speed were significantly higher in regurgitated or pulped seeds by the fauna than in seeds extracted directly from the plant. Large frugivores were eventually recorded, suggesting a defaunation in the study area. The number of interactions verified, however, confirms the ecological importance of E. edulis for the maintenance of the frugivorous guild with occurrence in the locality.

Abstract In this study, I tested the effect of Syagrus loefgrenii nut number on the removal intensity by rodents across seasons. Also, I assessed both S. loefgrenii fruit production, and dispersion pattern to analyze the relationship between these parameters and nut removal. Trials were performed (autumn, winter, spring, and summer), in which endocarps were placed inside trays (5, 15, and 40 endocarps) in the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna). Syagrus loefgrenii exhibited clumped distribution, although its local density had no correlation with endocarp removal rate. Despite of variations, S. loefgrenii fruit production had no seasonal difference, although, high proportions of endocarps were year round removed. This mostly results from nearly complete endocarp loss in depots of 5 and 15, while the opposite occurred in those of 40. Hence, the intensity of removal consistently decreases with endocarp number, so that endocarp removal conformed to negative distance-dependence. As this palm exhibit clumped distribution and, in principle, fruit asynchronously, if, at least, a group of neighboring stems bore fruits simultaneously, an enhanced number of nuts might be available at a given site. Therefore, seeds within a dense S. loefgrenii fruit patch might experience high survival rates due to satiation of post dispersal seed predators.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of shoot topping and leaf removal practices on vegetative vigor, yield and physicochemical characteristics of the 'Syrah' grape in the semi-arid tropical climate conditions of the São Francisco River Valley in the northeast of Brazil. The experiment was conducted over five growing cycles from 2010 to 2012 in a 'Syrah' commercial vineyard in the municipality of Casa Nova, Bahia, Brazil. Treatments consisted of leaf removal once or twice during fruit set or at the beginning of bunch closure, and one or two shoot toppings of the berry when pea-sized or 10 days after berry growth had commenced. Leaf removal and shoot topping did not affect yield, plant vigor components nor the main attributes of fruit quality. In contrast, there was a seasonal effect with higher yield and better balance between production and vigor in grapes produced in the first half of 2012. The Syrah grape quality was favored in cycles in the first half of the year when its ripening phase coincided with the period of mild temperatures.
