Carcinoid is a neoplasia that arises from dispersed cells of the neuroendocrine system. This tumor is uncommon in animals, and its occurrence in the gallbladder is rare. A male Basset Hound dog's corpse was taken to the Univerdade Federal de Minas Gerais to be analyzed by the Veterinary Pathology sector, without a description of its previous history. Necropsy revealed the presence of pale oral, ocular and penile mucous membranes. The gallbladder had a thickened wall and a dilated lumen, which was filled with dark and lumpy bile. Its mucosa had a whitish-red nodule, with solid and friable areas. Microscopically, there was a focal neoplastic proliferation, which wasn't encapsulated and had imprecise limits, which cells were distributed in a solid pattern and separated by a delicate fibrovascular stroma. The neoplastic cells presented oval or round shaped nucleus, which had a chromatin predominantly loose, and one or two nucleoli. Their cytoplasm was moderately abundant, and in most of the cells it was eosinophilic, granular, and had well-defined limits. Using the Grimelius coloration, neoplastic cells' cytoplasmic granules stained brownish or black, confirming the neuroendocrine origin of the neoplasia. Based on the macroscopic and microscopic findings, the diagnosis of a gallbladder carcinoid was established.(AU)

Background: Biliary tumors have low incidence in cats and are more common in elderly animals. Hepatobiliary tumors have different classifications and their etiology is difficult to interpret. In most cases, the diagnosis is only possible in advanced stages, which clouds the precursor factors. The late diagnosis is explained by the absence or specificity of clinical manifestations and laboratory changes. The majority of hepatobiliary neoplasms in cats are incidental findings in surgeries or necropsies. This study aimed to report clinical, laboratory, pathological and immunohistochemical results in a feline case of gallbladder adenocarcinoma. Case: 4-year-old male castrated mix breed cat was admitted at a veterinary clinic with a history of polyuria / polydipsia, anorexia, apathy, jaundice and emesis for 60 days. The animal had been treated in another clinic with silymarin, famotidine and cyanocobalamin, and fed by esophageal tube based on the presumptive clinical diagnosis of cholangitis. The clinical examination revealed jaundice, abdominal pain, weight loss, enlargement of the liver and gallbladder and the presence of a structure in the epigastric region. Based on clinical signs, blood tests (complete blood count and liver enzymes), abdominal ultrasound and thoracic radiography were requested. In the exam results, eosinophilia, bilirubinemia and increased alkaline phosphatase, glutamic pyruvic transaminase and gamma glutamyl transferase were observed, in addition to the presence of icteric and hemolyzed serum. Ultrasound exam revealed thickened and dilated cystic and common ducts, large and thick gallbladder, bile with bile mud, hypoechogenic liver, thickening in the duodenal papilla and enlarged pancreatic and duodenal lymph nodes. There were no alterations in thoracic radiography. Based on the findings, the diagnosis of...

A carcinoid is a rare neoplasm derived from neuroendocrine cells that may arise in the hepatobiliary system. This report described two cases of carcinoid of the gallbladder in dogs, with emphasis on the clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical aspects. Case 1 was a 10-year-old female Shih Tzu, with a history of prostration and occasional episodes of diarrhea and vomiting. Case 2 was a 10-year-old male Cocker Spaniel, with a history of diarrhea and abdominal pain. Abdominal ultrasonography suggested a neoplasm of the gallbladder in both cases. The dogs underwent cholecystectomy, and 10% formalin-fixed samples were sent for pathological examination. Histologically, a neoplastic proliferation of neuroendocrine cells was observed in the gallbladder submucosa of both cases. Immunohistochemical labeling for neuroendocrine antibodies, such as synaptophysin, neuron-specific enolase and chromogranin A, confirmed the diagnoses. Carcinoid of the gallbladder is a rare neoplasm in dogs, without specific clinical signs, but should be included in the differential diagnosis of lesions that affect this organ.(AU)

Purpose Bile duct injury (BDI) is a catastrophic complication of cholecystectomy, and misidentification of the cystic anatomy is considered to be the main cause. Although several techniques have been developed to prevent BDI, such as the critical view of safety, the infundibular technique, the rates remain higher during laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) than during open surgery. We, here, propose a practical new strategy for ductal identification, that can help to prevent laparoscopic bile duct injury. Methods A retrospective study of 5539 patients who underwent LC from March 2007 to February 2019 at a single institution was conducted. The gallbladder infundibulum was classified by its position located on an imaginary clock with the gallbladder neck as the center point of the dial, 3-oclock position as cranial, 6-oclock as dorsal, 9-oclock as caudal, and 12-oclock as ventral, as well as the axial position. Patient demographics, pathologic variables and infundibulum classification were evaluated. Detailed analysis of ductal identification based on gallbladder infundibulum position was performed in this study. All infundibulum positions were recorded by intraoperative laparoscopic video or photographic images. Results All the patients successfully underwent LC during the study period. No conversion or serious complications such as biliary injury occurred. Gallbladders with infundibulum of 3-oclock position, 6-oclock position, 9-oclock position, 12-oclock position, axial position were 12.3%, 23.4%, 28.0%, 4.2%, and 32.1%, respectively. The 3-oclock and 12-oclock position were pitfalls that might cause biliary injury. Conclusion The gallbladder infundibulum as a navigator is useful for ductal identification to reduce BDI and improve the safety of LC.(AU)

The study was carried out with objective to evaluate the effects of sexual condition on the weights and yields of nonconstituents of the carcass of Texel x Corriedale lambs. Forty-six males were used divided in three groups: uncastrated (n = 15), castrated (n = 17) and induced to cryptorchidism (n = 14). A completely randomized design with three treatments and variable number of repetitions was adopted, an analysis of variance was performed to evaluate the effect of sexual condition on the characteristics studied. Castrated lambs have reached the stipulated conditions for slaughter earlier. Uncastrated and induced to cryptorchidism presented higher weights of head (kg), skin (kg), penis (kg) and liver with gall bladder (kg). Uncastrated lambs presented higher values for lungs with trachea (kg) compared to castrated animals. It is concluded that uncastrated and induced to cryptorchidism lambs present higher weights of some body components when finished in native field receiving supplementation of 1% of body weight. Proportionally, the sexual condition does not interfere in the yields of the body components of Texel x Corriedale lambs.

A cultura isolou a bactéria Sthapylococcus intermedius.

The gallbladder mucocele (GBM) is characterized by abnormal accumulation of semisolid bile in the gallbladder. This case repor is about a female dog, Yorkshire, attended on a private Veterinary Hospital (Serviço Médico Veterinário – SEMEVE). The dog had vomiting, anorexia, prostration and tremors that started on the day of the appointment. During the anamnesis, the tutor reported that the patient had been diagnosed with dyslipidemia three years before, however, endocrine disorders were ruled out as the cause of the condition. At the physical examination, the animal presented sensitivity to abdominal palpation and mild sclera jaundice. During the abdominal ultrasound it was diagnosed gallbladder mucocele, through echogenicity and the pattern presented by the bile associated with the clinical history of the animal. The initial treatment was with antibiotic therapy, fluid therapy supplemented with vitamin B and potassium, analgesic, antiemetic and gastric protector. Due to the worsening of the dog seen in the exams, 48 hours after admission, cholecystectomy was performed. In the transurgical procedure, omentum adherence to the gallbladder and fluid around it was identified. Culture with bile antibiogram was performed and allopathic therapy was maintained. The histopathology of the gallbladder showed acute suppurated cholecystitis. The culture isolated the bacterium Sthapylococcus intermedius. After 60 days of the surgery, the animal was clinically healthy and the tests for control showed complete resolution of the changes, so it was given medical discharge.

The ultrasonography enables assessments which result in relevant information for the maintenance of the species in captivity. Thus, we conducted a study with 15 specimens of Boa constrictor of both sexes, in order to characterize the ultrasonographic appearance, of reproductive structures, liver and gall bladder of these animals, through the side window technique. Besides that, we evaluate the influence of the factors fasting interval and size of the individual in the ultrasonographic characterization of structures. Pre-vitellogenic follicles were characterized by rounded shape, filled primarily by anechoic content and homogeneous and coarse echotexture and vitellogenic follicles showed anechogenic and hypoechoic content, both with fine and regular margins. Testes were characterized by elongated shape, parenchymal with echogenicity mean, regular margins and homogeneous echotexture. The liver showed elongated shape, parenchyma with mixed echogenicity (hypoechoic to hyperechoic), echogenic margins, homogeneous echotexture and average size of 27,6 cm. The gallbladder showed rounded shape, filled with anechoic content, surrounded by a thin hyperechoic margin. Of the factors evaluated, fasting interval was the one that interfered the most in the ultrasonographic characterization of the organs. The size of the snakes did not exert any influence. It was concluded that ultrasound, through the side window technique, is effective in the evaluation of the organs studied.

It was concluded that ultrasound, through the side window technique, is effective in the evaluation of the organs studied.(AU)

Chickens have a great participation in meat and egg production. The anatomical scientific data of poultry is important to support the recent researches either for illustrations in academic studies or clinically in diagnosis and treatment of some poultry nutritional diseases. The current investigation was performed on twenty broiler chickens of both sexes. The chickens were anaesthetized, slaughtered then the venous system was flushed with a normal saline to anatomically investigate the distribution of hepatic portal veins both intra and extrahepatic, as well as the hepatic venous and biliary duct systems. The fowl had two hepatic portal veins draining the gastrointestinal tract with its associated organs as spleen and pancreas. The left hepatic portal vein was small, restricted to a limited portion of left hepatic lobe and had been constituted by five main venous tributaries draining the proventriculus, gizzard and pylorus, while the right hepatic portal vein was the largest, receiving the proventriculosplenic, gastropancreaticoduodenal and common mesenteric veins then piercing the right hepatic lobe to be distributed in both hepatic segments through right and left divisions. The fowl has two hepatic portal veins differed in size and distribution. A characteristic imaginary trapezoid shape was formed by some tributaries draining the caudoventral part of the gizzard. There are three ileocecal veins; cranial, caudal and the ileocecal tributary of the cranial mesenteric vein. The wall of gall bladder and the common hepatoenteric duct was characterized by the presence of well-defined longitudinal folds or striations.(AU)

Platynosomum sp. is the major hepatobiliary parasite of felids, causing an extra-hepatic obstructive lesion which may be treated by surgery. A two-year old cross-bred feline, semi-domiciled, was attended with a clinical picture of apathy, jaundice, dehydration and increase in hepatic enzymes. In the abdominal ultrasonography the liver was observed enlarged, hepatic and portal veins with increased diameter, gall bladder filled by anechoic content, with sediment, thickening and hyperechogenicity of the wall and a dilated main bile duct with a thickened wall. The cholecystectomy with a duodenal enterotomy was performed. The inspection of the gall bladder’s content revealed parasites with a flattened aspect and the microscopic evaluation was compatible with Platynosomum sp. A treatment with niclosamide and oxibendazole was efficient. Cholecystectomy associated to a duodenal enterotomy is efficient in these cases.

Obstructive biliary pathway diseases are not rare in dogs, especially those with severe clinical signs and those that need surgical treatment. Image diagnostic exams to evaluate biliary tract, like ultrasound, conventional X-ray and CT, have been used in veterinary medicine with some restrictions such as low sensibility, and in many regions unfeasibility of achievement. Due to this, most of the pacients with biliary obstruction sings are submitted to surgical procedure before an accurate diagnostic of the disease. This paper aimed to standardize and describe the percutaneous transcolecystic cholangiography in dogs that consists in the injection of contrast inside of the gall bladder guided by ultrasound. It allows to see all the bililary tract, using X-ray. The technique was performed 10 times in six clinical healthy dogs. The puncture was performed in the 9th intercostal right space near to the sternum using a 20G catheter, the dose was 1ml per 4kg. After contrast injection, serial radiographs of the abdominal region were made, in left lateral projection and ventrodorsal, the first projections were performed immediately after contrast injection and repeated after five and ten minutes. No animal showed any side effect due to the technique, this was confirmed by observation and by hepatic function evaluation. The technique was considered efficacious to visualize all the biliary tree and to see any possible obstruction in ill dogs.(AU)

Considering the possibilities of mistaken diagnoses in identifying lesions at meat inspection this study was designed to provide data for a better-educated diagnosis by the meat inspectors through the gross and microscopic characterization of parasitic lesions observed in slaughtered sheep at the inspection line. One hundred and sixty-one samples of parasitic lesions were sampled from various organs of slaughtered sheep during two visits to a sheep abattoir located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Lesions observed included hydatid cysts, cysticercosis due to Cysticercus ovis and to Cysticercus tenuicollis, sarcocystosis (morphology compatible with Sarcocystis gigantea), fasciolosis (Fasciola hepatica) and oesophagostomosis. Twenty-five point five percent of the 161 samples corresponded to hydatidosis and the hydatid cysts were observed predominantly in the lungs (46.3%) and liver (41.5%). On cut surface, the cysts had three different morphological patterns: viable unilocular cysts (34%); viable multivesicular cysts (31.7%); and degenerate (unilocular and multivesicular) hydatid cysts (34%). Cysticercosis by C. ovis (22.4%) was observed in the myocardium (63.9%), tongue (13.9%), masseter (11.1%), and diaphragm (11.1%). Morphologically the cysticerci were classified as viable, degenerated or mineralized. Lesions caused by S. Gigantea (19.2%) were observed in the muscle layer of the esophagus, tongue, and larynx. Grossly there were multiple white nodular structures that contained a fibrous capsule with the lumen filled by translucent and gelatinous material. Cysticercosis by C. tenuicollis accounted for 18.6% of observed parasitic lesions; the cysts adhered to the omentum, mesentery, liver capsule, and serosal surface of gall bladder; grossly the cysts were classified as viable and degenerated. Viable cysts had translucent or slightly opaque walls and contained a single scolex. Degenerated cysts were white, firm and with a thick fibrous capsule and mineralized center. Lesions caused by F. hepatica accounted for 7.4% of the cases and were grossly characterized by variable fibrous thickening of bile ducts which occasionally contained the adult flukes in their lumina. In eight cases there were marked areas of necrosis in the hepatic parenchyma. Lesions caused Oesophagostomumspp. accounted for 6.8% of the observed parasitic cases and the changes were observed in all cases in the walls of the small and large intestine; in two cases mesenteric lymph nodes were also involved. In the intestines, lesions were characterized by firm well-circumscribed nodules prominent in the serosal surface and also invading the muscle layer. In the lymph nodes marked mineralization obliterated the nodal parenchyma. The correct identification of the various parasitic lesions found in the viscera of sheep in the abattoir inspection line it is important to dictate the proper destination of affected organs and carcasses. The lesions should be evaluated aiming to determine their infective capacity and to acquire knowledge about their more frequent anatomical sites.(AU)
