Resumen Introducción: El uso de artrópodos en estudios ecológicos en el bosque seco tropical (Bs-T) de Colombia se centra mayormente en arañas, mariposas, hormigas y escarabajos coprófagos; por lo tanto, es necesario comprender como es la dinámica estacional de otros grupos como Geadephaga en este ecosistema. Objetivo: Evaluar la variación espacio-temporal y el efecto de las condiciones ambientales sobre la diversidad de las comunidades de Geadephaga en dos fragmentos de Bs-T en el Caribe colombiano. Métodos: El estudio se llevó a cabo en cuatro eventos de muestreo entre febrero y junio de 2018; cada uno con una duración de cuatro días y cuatro noches. En cada localidad (Reserva Campesina La Montaña = RCM y Reserva La Flecha = RLF), se marcaron cuatro estaciones distanciadas 350 m, con parcelas de 50×50 m. En el centro de cada parcela se instaló una trampa de luz, mientras que en los cuatro vértices se instalaron trampas de caída, y se realizó captura manual, cernido de hojarasca y perturbación de follaje. Resultados: Se capturó un total de 348 ejemplares de Carabidae y 114 de Cicindelidae. La riqueza y la abundancia presentaron los valores más bajos durante el período seco, mientras que los mayores valores se observaron durante el período de lluvias, en ambos fragmentos. Tetracha affinis (Dejean, 1825) fue la especie más abundante en la RCM durante el período lluvioso. Conclusiones: La variación de la riqueza y abundancia de Geadephaga responde a un patrón estacional en ambos fragmentos. Se encontró una amplia disimilitud entre las comunidades de Geadephaga de ambos fragmentos, pese a tener condiciones ambientales parecidas.


Abstract Introduction: The use of arthropods in ecological studies in the tropical dry forest (TDF) of Colombia focused mainly on spiders, butterflies, ants, and dung beetles; therefore, it is necessary to understand the seasonal dynamics of the other groups such as Geadephaga in this ecosystem. Objective: To evaluate the spatio-temporal variations and the effect of environmental conditions on the diversity of the Geadephaga communities in two TDF fragments in the Colombian Caribbean. Methods: This study was conducted during four sampling events between February and June 2018, each lasting four days, and four nights. Four sampling stations were selected in each locality (Reserva Campesina La Montaña = RCM and Reserva La Flecha = RLF), separated 350 m one from another, with square plots of 50 × 50 m. A light trap was installed in the center of each square, while pitfall traps were installed in the four vertices, and manual capture, beating sheets and leaf litter sieve were carried out. Results: A total of 348 Carabidae and 114 of Cicindelidae were captured. In both fragments, the richness and abundance presented the lowest values in dry season, while the highest values were observed during the rainy season. Tetracha affinis (Dejean, 1825) was the most abundant species in RCM during rainy season. Conclusions: The richness variation and abundance of Geadephaga corresponds to a seasonal pattern at both locations. A high dissimilarity between the communities of Geadephaga from the two fragments was found, despite having similar environmental conditions.

Following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in 2011, most of the released 137Cs remained in the litter and surface soil of the adjacent forest floor. However, 137Cs absorption by large soil invertebrates near this site has not been estimated. The aim of this study was to understand the role of soil macroinvertebrates in 137Cs uptake from forest litter into forest ecosystems. Breeding experiments were conducted using scarab beetle larvae (Protaetia orientalis). Dissection experiments revealed that 85% of the total 137Cs was concentrated in the digestive tract of larvae, while a low proportion was absorbed into the skin and muscle tissues. The 137Cs absorption rate, indicating the transfer of 137Cs from consumed litter to larval tissue, was low (0.39%). 137Cs concentrations decreased to one-fourth from larva to imago, possibly due to excretion from the digestive tract and during eclosion. In the elimination experiment, biological half-lives were 0.26-0.64 and 0.11-0.47 days and 3.35-48.30 and 4.01-17.70 days for the digestive tract and muscle/skin tissues in the fast and slow components, respectively, corresponding to 137Cs discharge from the gastrointestinal tract and physiological clearance. In the sequential extraction experiment, litter digestion by flower chafer larvae significantly reduced the bioavailable fraction of 137Cs including water-soluble, exchangeable, oxidized, and organic forms, from 23.2% in litter to 17.7% in feces. Residual 137Cs was not reduced by digestion, probably because it was fixed in soil clay. Our study on breeding experiments of the Scarabaeidae beetle confirmed the low bioavailability of 137Cs in the litter in Fukushima. However, litter feeders may play an important role in transferring 137Cs to higher trophic levels in the forest ecosystem by extracting the bioavailable fraction of the vast stock of 137Cs on the forest floor.

The introduction of the Nearctic predaceous stink bug species, (Perillus bioculatus) was attempted multiple times in various countries throughout Europe to mitigate the damage caused by the invasive and harmful pest species, the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata). Though these attempts were thought to be unsuccessful for decades, more recent data elucidated that the species have established small self-sustaining populations in the Balkans Peninsula, Southern Russia, and Türkiye and recently began to expand. In the past years, the European range of the species reached Eastern Europe. After the first individuals were found in Hungary in October 2023 a citizen science campaign was launched to investigate the distribution of the species in the country. By June 2024 it became evident that the species is established throughout the country. Furthermore, observations regarding beetle larvae and moth caterpillars as alternative prey were reported supporting the previous assumptions that the naturalization and expansion of the species in Europe is facilitated by dietary drift. Here, we summarize the knowledge on the European presence of the two-spotted stink bug and formulate hypotheses regarding its future distribution and the impact of the species on the insect communities of the newly colonized areas.

Sexual conflict is widespread among sexually reproducing organisms. Phenotypic plasticity in female resistance traits has the potential to moderate the harm imposed by males during mating, yet female plasticity has rarely been explored. In this experiment, we investigated whether female seed beetles invest more in immunocompetence, measured as phenoloxidase (PO) capacity, when exposed to cues signalling a greater risk of sexual conflict. Risk perception was manipulated by housing focal individuals alone or with a companion as developing larvae, followed by exposure to a mating-free male- or female-biased social environment when adults. We predicted that females exposed to cues of increased sexual conflict would have increased PO capacity. However, PO capacity did not differ between either larval or adult social treatments. Our results suggest that females may not perceive a risk to their fitness on the basis of increased male presence or are unable to adjust this aspect of their phenotype in response to that risk.

Plastid-mediated RNA interference has emerged as a promising and effective approach for pest management. By expressing high levels of double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs) in plastid that target essential pest genes, it has been demonstrated to effectively control certain herbivorous beetles and spider mites. However, as plants are sessile organisms, they frequently experience a combination of biotic and abiotic stresses. It remains unclear whether abiotic stress, such as drought stress, influences the accumulation of dsRNAs produced in plastids and its effectiveness in controlling pests. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of drought stress on dsACT expression in transplastomic poplar plants and its control efficiency against the willow leaf beetle (Plagiodera versicolora). Our findings revealed that drought stress did not significantly affect the dsRNA contents in transplastomic poplar plants, but it did lead to higher mortality of insect larvae. This increased mortality may be attributed to increased levels of jasmonic acid and cysteine proteinase inhibitor induced by water deficit. These results contribute to understanding of the mechanisms linking water deficit in plants to insect performance and provide valuable insights for implementing appropriate pest control strategies under drought stress conditions.

Plant essential oils (EOs)-based acaricides have been recognized as environmentally-friendly alternatives to synthetic acaricides because of their low toxicity against non-target species. Despite this, there are knowledge gaps regarding the toxicity mechanisms of plant EOs against non-target species. Here, the toxicology and enzymatic mechanism of Citrus reticulata and Citrus lemon EOs were evaluated against the vector pest, Haemaphysalis longicornis, and non-target ladybird beetle, Harmonia axyridis. Both EOs were mainly composed of d-Limonene, followed by ß-Myrcene and γ-Terpinene in C. reticulata, and (-)-ß-Pinene and γ-Terpinene in C. lemon. Citrus reticulata and C. lemon EOs were toxic to Hae. longicornis, with 50 % lethal concentration (LC50) values estimated at 0.43 and 0.98 µL/mL via nymphal immersion test, and 42.52 and 46.38 µL/mL via spray application, respectively. Among the constituents tested, ß-Myrcene was the most effective, with LC50 values of 0.17 and 47.87 µL/mL via immersion and spray treatment, respectively. A significant mortality of non-target Har. axyridis was found when treated by the EOs at concentrations two times greater than LC50 estimated against H. longicornis. The biochemical assay revealed that the EOs induced changes in the antioxidant enzyme activity of superoxide dismutases, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase in Hae. longicornis and Har. axyridis. The results demonstrated the acaricidal potential of citrus EOs and their major constituents for tick control, revealed the risk of the EOs to non-target species, and provided relevant insights into the mechanisms underlying their toxicity.

Eukaryotic genomes exhibit a dynamic interplay between single-copy sequences and repetitive DNA elements, with satellite DNA (satDNA) representing a substantial portion, mainly situated at telomeric and centromeric chromosomal regions. We utilized Illumina next-generation sequencing data from Adalia bipunctata to investigate its satellitome. Cytogenetic mapping via fluorescence in situ hybridization was performed for the most abundant satDNA families. In silico localization of satDNAs was carried out using the CHRISMAPP (Chromosome In Silico Mapping) pipeline on the high-fidelity chromosome-level assembly already available for this species, enabling a meticulous characterization and localization of multiple satDNA families. Additionally, we analyzed the conservation of the satellitome at an interspecific scale. Specifically, we employed the CHRISMAPP pipeline to map the satDNAs of A. bipunctata onto the genome of Adalia decempunctata, which has also been sequenced and assembled at the chromosome level. This analysis, along with the creation of a synteny map between the two species, suggests a rapid turnover of centromeric satDNA between these species and the potential occurrence of chromosomal rearrangements, despite the considerable conservation of their satellitomes. Specific satDNA families in the sex chromosomes of both species suggest a role in sex chromosome differentiation. Our interspecific comparative study can provide a significant advance in the understanding of the repeat genome organization and evolution in beetles.

The identification of odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) involved in host location by Oides leucomelaena (O. leucomelaena Weise, 1922, Coleoptera, Galerucinae) is significant for its biological control. Tools in the NCBI database were used to compare and analyze the transcriptome sequences of O. leucomelaena with OBP and other chemosensory-related proteins of other Coleoptera insects. Subsequently, MEGA7 was utilized for OBP sequence alignment and the construction of a phylogenetic tree, combined with expression profiling to screen for candidate antennae-specific OBPs. In addition, fumigation experiments with star anise volatiles were conducted to assess the antennae specificity of the candidate OBPs. Finally, molecular docking was employed to speculate on the binding potential of antennae-specific OBPs with star anise volatiles. The study identified 42 candidate OBPs, 8 chemosensory proteins and 27 receptors. OleuOBP3, OleuOBP5, and OleuOBP6 were identified as classic OBP family members specific to the antennae, which was confirmed by volatile fumigation experiments. Molecular docking ultimately clarified that OleuOBP3, OleuOBP5, and OleuOBP6 all exhibit a high affinity for ß-caryophyllene among the star anise volatiles. We successfully obtained three antennae-specific OBPs from O. leucomelaena and determined their high-affinity volatiles, providing a theoretical basis for the development of attractants in subsequent stages.

The Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia), which functions as a "dead-end trap tree" for the Asian long-horned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis) in mixed plantations, can successfully attract Asian long-horned beetles for oviposition and subsequently kill the eggs by gum. This study aimed to investigate gum secretion differences by comparing molecular and metabolic features across three conditions-an oviposition scar, a mechanical scar, and a healthy branch-using high-performance liquid chromatography and high-throughput RNA sequencing methods. Our findings indicated that the gum mass secreted by an oviposition scar was 1.65 times greater than that secreted by a mechanical scar. Significant differences in gene expression and metabolism were observed among the three comparison groups. A Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes annotation and enrichment analysis showed that an oviposition scar significantly affected starch and sucrose metabolism, leading to the discovery of 52 differentially expressed genes and 7 differentially accumulated metabolites. A network interaction analysis of differentially expressed metabolites and genes showed that EaSUS1, EaYfcE1, and EaPGM1 regulate sucrose, uridine diphosphate glucose, α-D-glucose-1P, and D-glucose-6P. Although the polysaccharide content in the OSs was 2.22 times higher than that in the MSs, the sucrose content was lower. The results indicated that the Asian long-horned beetle causes Russian olive sucrose degradation and D-glucose-6P formation. Therefore, we hypothesized that damage caused by the Asian long-horned beetle could enhance tree gum secretions through hydrolyzed sucrose and stimulate the Russian olive's specific immune response. Our study focused on the first pair of a dead-end trap tree and an invasive borer pest in forestry, potentially offering valuable insights into the ecological self-regulation of Asian long-horned beetle outbreaks.

The northern bark beetle, Ips duplicatus, is an emerging economic pest, reportedly infesting various species of spruce (Picea spp.), pine (Pinus spp.), and larch (Larix spp.) in Central Europe. Recent climate changes and inconsistent forest management practices have led to the rapid spread of this species, leaving the current monitoring strategies inefficient. As understanding the molecular components of pheromone detection is key to developing novel control strategies, we generated antennal transcriptomes from males and females of this species and annotated the chemosensory proteins. We identified putative candidates for 69 odorant receptors (ORs), 50 ionotropic receptors (IRs), 25 gustatory receptors (GRs), 27 odorant-binding proteins (OBPs), including a tetramer-OBP, 9 chemosensory proteins (CSPs), and 6 sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs). However, no sex-specific chemosensory genes were detected. The phylogenetic analysis revealed conserved orthology in bark beetle chemosensory proteins, especially with a major forest pest and co-habitant, Ips typographus. Recent large-scale functional studies in I. typographus chemoreceptors add greater significance to the orthologous sequences reported here. Nevertheless, identifying chemosensory genes in I. duplicatus is valuable to understanding the chemosensory system and its evolution in bark beetles (Coleoptera) and, generally, insects.

BACKGROUND: Plants have evolved various defense mechanisms against insect herbivores, including the formation of physical barriers, the synthesis of toxic metabolites, and the activation of phytohormone responses. Although plant-associated microbiota influence plant growth and health, whether they play a role in plant defense against insect pests in natural ecosystems is unknown. RESULTS: Here, we show that leaves of beetle-damaged weeping willow (Salix babylonica) trees are more resistant to the leaf beetle Plagiodera versicolora (Coleoptera) than those of undamaged leaves. Bacterial community transplantation experiments demonstrated that plant-associated microbiota from the beetle-damaged willow contribute to the resistance of the beetle-damaged willow to P. versicolora. Analysis of the composition and abundance of the microbiome revealed that Pseudomonas spp. is significantly enriched in the phyllosphere, roots, and rhizosphere soil of beetle-damaged willows relative to undamaged willows. From a total of 49 Pseudomonas strains isolated from willows and rhizosphere soil, we identified seven novel Pseudomonas strains that are toxic to P. versicolora. Moreover, re-inoculation of a synthetic microbial community (SynCom) with these Pseudomonas strains enhances willow resistance to P. versicolora. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, our data reveal that willows can exploit specific entomopathogenic bacteria to enhance defense against P. versicolora, suggesting that there is a complex interplay among plants, insects, and plant-associated microbiota in natural ecosystems.

In the present work, chemical and enzymatic assisted techniques were compared for protein extraction from lesser mealworm larvae (LM, Alphitobius diaperinus), recently approved as a novel food in the European Union. All extracts showed appreciable nutritional quality, with quantities of essential amino acids above the reference standard. Conventional alkali extraction allowed the isolation of only 73% of the protein, preserving the amino acid composition but potentially causing denaturation or racemisation. The "stepwise" method, following the Osborne fractionation, improved protein recovery to 91% by isolating four fractions with different solubility properties. Additionally, enzymatic hydrolysis using Bacillus licheniformis proteases was also tested, and it provided hydrolysates with an average degree of hydrolysis of 14%, making them a potential hypoallergenic solution. Overall, these findings indicate the ability to tailor the composition of LM protein to meet specific needs, offering promising prospects for the use of insect protein ingredients in various applications.

Tribolium castaneum is a challenging pest of stored products, causing significant economic losses. The present study explored the efficacy of Coridothymus capitatus essential oil and its primary constituent, carvacrol, as eco-friendly alternatives for managing this pest. To evaluate their insecticidal potential, repellency, fumigant toxicity, and antifeedant properties, progeny inhibition assays were performed. Carvacrol exhibited superior repellency compared to the essential oil, achieving a 92% repellency rate at 2 mg/cm2. Both compounds demonstrated significant fumigant toxicity against T. castaneum, with LC50 values of 168.47 and 106.5 µL/L for the essential oil and carvacrol, respectively, after 24 h. Carvacrol also outperformed the essential oil in antifeedant activity, inducing an 80.7% feeding deterrence at 1.17 mg/g. Moreover, both treatments effectively suppressed the development of the pest's progeny. These results collectively underscore the potent insecticidal properties of C. capitatus essential oil and carvacrol, particularly carvacrol, as promising candidates for the sustainable management of T. castaneum in stored product protection.

The antennal sensilla play an important role in many behavioral activities of insects. The fungivorous beetle Triplax ainonia Lewis (Erotylidae) is an important pest which prefers to feed on Pleurotus mushrooms. In order to clarify the types, number, and distribution of the antennal sensilla of male and female T. ainonia, scanning electron microscopy was used. The results showed that there were five sensillum types on the antennae of adults male and female, including Böhm's bristles (BB), sensilla chaetica (three subtypes: SC 1, SC 2, and SC 3), sensilla basiconica (three subtypes: SB 1, SB 2, and SB 3), sensilla trichodea (ST), and sensilla styloconica (SS). Among all the sensilla, the number of SB 2 was the most abundant in both sexes. We found that there was no sexually dimorphic in the sensillum types, but there were differences in the number, lengths, and diameters of some sensilla between males and females. Based on the information of the morphology and distribution of the sensilla, the potential functions of the antennal sensilla of T. ainonia adults were discussed. The results of this study provide a basis for further study on the behavioral ecology and electrophysiology of the fungivore beetles of the Erotylidae.

This research focuses on the effect of environmental factors on the phenology and distribution of the Tentyria species (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) from Doñana National Park (SW Iberian Peninsula). Data are derived from the results of a project carried out 20 years ago, aimed at inventorying the coleopteran of the park. This information provides a framework for comparison with current or future states since the time elapsed is long enough to detect variations. As the classification of Tentyria species is complex and controversial, the first aspect to be addressed was the taxonomical verification of the species. Indeed, they were T. platyceps Steven., T. subcostata Solier., T. bifida Bujalance, Cárdenas, Ferrer and Gallardo, and T. donanensis Bujalance, Cárdenas, Ferrer and Gallardo. Sampling consisted of 2 years of monthly pitfall trapping, encompassing the surface of the park and adjacent areas. Data on adult seasonal activity and spatial distribution of the species were obtained from the specific abundance in each sampling plot. Phenologically, the 4 species were mainly summer species, with unimodal or bimodal curves depending on the species. The distribution of the species was quite uneven: while T. donanensis was ubiquitous, T. subcostata was restricted to the southern coastal area of the park, and T. platyceps and T. bifida were recorded in the northern half, in marshes or inland forests, respectively. Our results also suggest that extreme temperatures may impose major constraints on the spatial distribution of Tentyria species, which could affect Doñana's biodiversity in the future scenery of thermal rise linked to climate change.

Anomala Samouelle, 1819 is one of the specious genera of Coleoptera, with over 1000 known species, and includes some of the most destructive pests of crops or forests. Morphological convergence is a common phenomenon within this genus, making the identification of closely related species very difficult. To explore the phylogenetic placement of Anomalini and provide a basis for the classification and identification of Anomala, we comparatively analyzed the complete mitogenome of three Anomala species (A. exoleta, A. perplexa diana, and A. praecoxalis). Based on all accessible mitogenome data, we performed comparative mitochondrial genomics analysis of this genus and reconstructed the phylogenetic relationships of Scarabaeidae based on two datasets (protein-coding genes and amino acids) and two methods (Bayesian approach and maximum likelihood). The phylogenetic relationships found in this study highly support that the groups of Aphodiinae, Cetoniinae, Dynastinae, Rutelinae and Scarabaeinae are monophyletic. Interestingly, the phylogenetic clustering relationship was highly consistent with the Scarabaeidae diet, indicating that the herbivorous species and dung-eating species are clustered separately. The phylogenetic tree showed that the subfamily Melolonthinae and the genus Anomala are not monophyletic, suggesting that these two groups should be further revised with more data.

BACKGROUND: Chemoreception is crucial for insect fitness, underlying for instance food-, host-, and mate finding. Chemicals in the environment are detected by receptors from three divergent gene families: odorant receptors (ORs), gustatory receptors (GRs), and ionotropic receptors (IRs). However, how the chemoreceptor gene families evolve in parallel with ecological specializations remains poorly understood, especially in the order Coleoptera. Hence, we sequenced the genome and annotated the chemoreceptor genes of the specialised ambrosia beetle Trypodendron lineatum (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Scolytinae) and compared its chemoreceptor gene repertoires with those of other scolytines with different ecological adaptations, as well as a polyphagous cerambycid species. RESULTS: We identified 67 ORs, 38 GRs, and 44 IRs in T. lineatum ('Tlin'). Across gene families, T. lineatum has fewer chemoreceptors compared to related scolytines, the coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei and the mountain pine beetle Dendroctonus ponderosae, and clearly fewer receptors than the polyphagous cerambycid Anoplophora glabripennis. The comparatively low number of chemoreceptors is largely explained by the scarcity of large receptor lineage radiations, especially among the bitter taste GRs and the 'divergent' IRs, and the absence of alternatively spliced GR genes. Only one non-fructose sugar receptor was found, suggesting several sugar receptors have been lost. Also, we found no orthologue in the 'GR215 clade', which is widely conserved across Coleoptera. Two TlinORs are orthologous to ORs that are functionally conserved across curculionids, responding to 2-phenylethanol (2-PE) and green leaf volatiles (GLVs), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Trypodendron lineatum reproduces inside the xylem of decaying conifers where it feeds on its obligate fungal mutualist Phialophoropsis ferruginea. Like previous studies, our results suggest that stenophagy correlates with small chemoreceptor numbers in wood-boring beetles; indeed, the few GRs may be due to its restricted fungal diet. The presence of TlinORs orthologous to those detecting 2-PE and GLVs in other species suggests these compounds are important for T. lineatum. Future functional studies should test this prediction, and chemoreceptor annotations should be conducted on additional ambrosia beetle species to investigate whether few chemoreceptors is a general trait in this specialized group of beetles.

Objective: Sclerodermus wasps are important biocontrol agents of a class of wood borers. Bacterial symbionts influence the ecology and biology of their hosts in a variety of ways, including the formation of life-long beneficial or detrimental parasitic infections. However, only a few studies have explored the species and content of the symbionts in the Sclerodermus species. Methods: Here, a high-throughput sequencing study of the V3-V4 region of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene revealed a high level of microbial variety in four Sclerodermus waps, and their diversities and functions were also predicted. Results: The three most prevalent phyla of microorganisms in the sample were Firmicutes, Bacteroides, and Proteus. The KEEG pathways prediction results indicated that the three pathways with the highest relative abundances in the S. sichuanensis species were translation, membrane transport, and nucleotide metabolism. These pathways differed from those observed in S. guani, S. pupariae, and S. alternatusi, which exhibited carbohydrate metabolism, membrane transport, and amino acid metabolism, respectively. Bacteroides were found to be abundant in several species, whereas Wolbachia was the most abundant among S. sichuanensis, with a significant negative correlation between temperature and carriage rate. Conclusions: These results offer insights into the microbial communities associated with the bethylid wasps, which is crucial for understanding how to increase the reproductive capacity of wasps, enhance their parasitic effects, and lower cost in biocontrol.

Twenty-two eco-friendly, novel Schiff bases were synthesized from 2,4,5-trichloro aniline and characterized by using FT-IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR techniques. Fungicidal activity against pathogenic fungi Sclerotium rolfsii and Rhizoctonia bataticola and insecticidal activity against the stored grain insect pest Callosobruchus maculatus of the test compounds were evaluated under control condition. All of the investigated compounds, according to the study, exhibited moderate to good antifungal and insecticidal activities. The best antifungal activity against both pathogenic fungi was demonstrated by C15 and C16 whose ED50 values were recorded 11.4 and 10.4 µg/mL against R. bataticola and 10.6 and 11.9 µg/mL against S. rolfsii, respectively. They were further screened in for disease suppression against both pathogenic fungi under pot condition through different methods of applications in green gram (Vigna radiata L.) crop. The compounds C10 and C18 had the highest insecticidal activity, with LD50 values of 0.024 and 0.042 percentages, respectively. Stepwise regression analysis using root mean square error (RMSE) and correlation coefficient (R) method used to validate the quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) of synthesized compounds in addition to their fungicidal and insecticidal actions. To the best of our knowledge, this investigation on the 22 new Schiff bases as possible agrochemicals is the first one that has been fully reported.

Insect growth regulators (IGRs) have been playing a major role in the effective management of a range of stored product insect pests including species that have developed resistance to major groups of insecticides, such as organophosphates (OPs) and synthetic pyrethroids (SPs). In the present study, we evaluated the efficacy of S-methoprene alone and in combination with piperonyl butoxide (PBO), an adjuvant component of insecticides for synergy, against two strains, Lab-S (susceptible) and Met-R (Methoprene resistant) of an economically important pest species, the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae). Adults of both Lab-S and Met-R strains were exposed to wheat treated with multiple concentrations of S-methoprene ranging from 0.001 to 0.01 and 10 to 60 mg/kg, respectively, alone and in combination with PBO. A variety of concentrations, including 0.27, 0.53, 0.80, and 1.07 g/kg, were evaluated for PBO. Mortality of adults and percent reduction in progeny were assessed after 14 and 65 days of treatment, respectively. As anticipated, the adult mortality rates of both strains were not significantly affected by S-methoprene alone. However, the number of progeny produced confirmed that the Met-R strain exhibited a high level of resistance to S-methoprene alone, with over 50 F1 progeny adults surviving in wheat treated with the maximal rate, 10 mg/kg. In contrast, the toxicity of S-methoprene was increased against the same resistant strain (Met-R), by 0.80 or 1.07 g/kg of PBO in combination treatment, resulting in a significant reduction in progeny numbers (25 adults per container). Although the tested concentrations of S-methoprene and PBO were well above the currently registered rate globally, our results highlight the fact that PBO enhances the toxicity of S-methoprene to some extent, reaffirming that the mode of action of the latter involves the inhibition of mixed-function oxidases (MFOs) and highlights the need for further research into developing potential binary or triplet formulations containing these two active ingredients (AIs).
