Ecological impacts of flood mitigation and drainage in coastal lowlands / Impactos ecológicos de la mitigación de inundaciones y del drenaje en tierras bajas costeras

There are increasing development pressures on the south-eastern Australian coastal lowlands. The climate of these coastal floodplains provides favourable conditions for crop and pasture growth but it also causes frequent flooding and propagates the effects of land use changes into streams rapidly. This paper explores the interactions between hydrology, drainage and flood mitigation, acid sulfate soils and their ecological impacts in south-eastern Australia, and examines government response to the ecological emergencies generated and the institutional impediments to addressing them

Transition plans for the Northeast River Forecast Center

Northeast River Forecast Center is in the midst of many significant changes. The intent of the changes is for an improvement in forecast services. New radar equipment should provide better definition of the spatial and temporal precipitation patterns that are driving the hydrologic models. The improved computer hardware should allow the forecasters to focus on the hydrologic aspects of their job and less on the computational restrictions with which they are now often faced. The improved procedures should allow the forecasters the flexibility and capability to appropriately model the river basins and generate river forecasts in timely and accurate fashion. The result of this modernization should be improved forecasts and warnings for all users

Drainage basins features and hydrological behaviour : River minateda basin

this paper, nine (shape, size and topological) basin variables have been analized in four little basins whith non-permanent run off. These geomorphological variables have been selected because of their high correlation with the instantaneous Unit Hydrograph (IUH) parameters, calculated by theoretical formulae and estimated by direct perceptions of the land people who live in the countryside when the streams are in spate.
