The objective of this work was to examine whether the practice of physical activity shared by grandparents and grandchildren is associated with increased psychological and physical well-being in childhood. In this research, participants were 1080 children aged 6 to 12 (53.61% female and 46.38% male) from northern Spain. Concerning leisure, 32.4% of the children practiced physical leisure activity with their grandparents and considered that sharing leisure with their grandparents contributed to their psychological and physical well-being. The practice of physical activity shared by grandparents and grandchildren was positively associated with the grandchildren’s greater perception of physical and psychological well-being. Social and family intervention policies should be aimed at fostering intergenerational settings for family physical activity because of their contribution to children's physical-sports adherence and to the increase in children’s physical and psychological well-being. RESUMO

The main aim of this study was to find out more about the role of great-grandparenthood. A group of participants with greatgrandchildren (n = 78) was interviewed using a questionnaire containing questions that had been put through a previous pilot study, covering participants' sociodemographics, the activities that participants shared with their great-grandchildren, and their view of the role of great-grandparent and their related degree of satisfaction. The data were recorded and analyzed both with frequency tables and descriptive statistics and with the Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test. The results showed several significant relationships between the shared activities and the sociodemographic variables, such as great-grandparents' age (p ≤ .05), education (p ≤ .01), health status (p ≤ .05), the distance at which they live from their great-grandchildren (p ≤ .05). Also, it was found that participants generally con-sider the role of great-grandparent to be a continuation of their prior role as grandparent, albeit from the perspective of a formal intergenerational typology, distinct from the informal typology and, above all, opposed to the role of substitute/surrogate. Greater perceived satisfaction was associated with this typical interaction of the formal role (p ≤ .01). Great-grandparents may already be fulfilling a notable function in today's four-generation families

The term of grandparenthood was coined by the psychoanalist P. Redler, to denominate the intrapsychic and interpersonal relationship between grandparent and grandchildren. Grandparenthood involves a specific relationship with specific conflict areas and with a process of development, named by this author "grandparenthood crisis". Grandparents are provided a opportunity to resolve this developmental crisis as they can help grandchildren to resolve the same conflicts with the generation in between. Despite the importance of grandparenthood in the family context, this is a topic poorly studied en psychology. In this paper, we try to explore the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, also from the perception that children have of their grandparents, in order to explore the subject of intergenerational transmission

RESUMO

Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the family roles and psychological well-being of grandparents who are caregivers of grandchildren with autism spectrum disorders. Method: The study used quantitative methods with a correlational design. A self-administered questionnaire was used as an instrument to measure the variables of psychological wellbeing and the grandparenting role. This research involved 108 grandparents from Semarang, Jepara and Kendal, obtained through a quota-purposive sampling technique. Quantitative data analysis was based on simple regression analysis. Results: The study results showed rxy= 0.397; P = .000 (P < .05), which indicates a positive and significant correlation between the role played by grandparents and their psychological well-being. Conclusions: The test results indicate a significant correlation between the roles of grandparents and their psychological well-being. The greater the role played by grandparents, the higher psychological well-being they experienced, and vice versa. Grandparents play an important role in families where there is a child with autism; they take care of the child when the parents are not at home, help with the cost of therapy, and take care of them when sick

The aging of the population and the current culture of caregiving have led to an increase in the number of grandmothers who care for their grandchildren, their ancestors, or even both generations simultaneously. In order to know more deeply the psychological consequences of this phenomenon, 115 structured interviews were conducted with women from southwestern Spain who were grandmothers and, at the same time, who were daughters or daughters-in-law from a previous generation. A two-stage cluster analysis was performed to classify these women according to their emotional intelligence. Women have been distributed almost 50% in two clearly differentiated groups. The first group, characterized by higher flexibility, stress tolerance and impulse control, brings together a greater proportion of women living in urban environments and with a higher level of studies, and shows significantly higher levels of psychological health and happiness. In contrast, the second group of women, characterized by lower emotional intelligence, scores significantly higher in stress and anxiety. This study highlights the importance of including the promotion of these emotional intelligence skills in prevention and health promotion programs in this collective of women
