RESUMO

Transurethral resection of ejaculatory duct (TURED) is a primary surgical approach to treat ejaculatory duct obstruction (EDO) caused by the ejaculatory duct cyst. Intraoperative excision of the verumontanum is usually required to expose the ejaculatory ducts. However, preserving the verumontanum structure allows for a better simulation of normal physiological anatomy. Maintaining the verumontanum may increase the risk of postoperative distal ejaculatory duct scarring, leading to recurrent obstruction or reduced semen volume. Therefore, we attempted a novel technique that preserves the verumontanum, which is relatively easier and safer compared to TURED. The following were the procedural steps: 1. A 6F seminal vesiculoscope was introduced through the external urethral orifice to the vicinity of the verumontanum, locating the opening of the affected-side ejaculatory duct and introducing a guidewire into the cyst. This successful step preserved the verumontanum, maximizing the retention of the anti-reflux mechanism in the distal ejaculatory duct. 2. The holmium laser enlarged the affected-side ejaculatory duct opening to 5 mm, decreasing the likelihood of postoperative closure of the ejaculatory duct opening and simplifying the procedure. 3. A window was created within the cyst to access the contralateral seminal vesicle, and then a holmium laser was used to burn and dilate the opening to 5 mm, redirecting the contralateral ejaculatory duct into the cystic cavity. This modification preserved the opening of the healthy-side ejaculatory duct and provided a new outflow passage for semen, reducing the risk of decreased semen volume postoperatively. The patients experienced no complications postoperatively, had shorter hospital stays, and showed improvement in semen volume. Hence, this surgical approach is simple yet effective.

PURPOSE: To explore the efficacy of different approaches of seminal vesiculoscopy surgery and the predictive factors of good treatment outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 68 patients who underwent seminal vesiculoscopy for hematospermia in our hospital from January 2015 to January 2021. According to different surgical approaches, they were divided into three groups: natural ejaculatory ducts (method A, 45 cases), assisted transurethral resection/incision of ejaculatory ducts (method B, 14 cases), fenestration in prostatic utricle (method C, 9 cases). We analyzed the recurrence rate of the three surgical approaches and the predictive factors of treatment efficacy. RESULTS: The total recurrence rate after the seminal vesiculoscopy for hematospermia in this group was 32.35%. The postoperative recurrence rates of the three methods were 24.44% for method A, 50.00% for method B and 44.44% for method C, and there was no significant difference among the three methods (P > 0.05). The data of five predictors of 45 cases in method A group were included in the Univariate Logistic analysis, the results suggest that whether complicated with seminal tract stones/cysts was an effective predictor (OR 0.250, P = 0.022), which was still an effective predictor in the Multivariate Logistic analysis model (OR 0.244, P = 0.010). CONCLUSIONS: The Transurethral seminal vesiculoscopy technique demonstrates a low postoperative recurrence rate in treating hematospermia. Among the various approaches, the intraoperative use of natural orifices through the ejaculatory duct exhibits the lowest recurrence rate. Additionally, seminal tract stones/cysts effectively predict favorable postoperative outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Fever and malaise without the possibility of an adequate anamnesis has a broad differential diagnosis. Under these conditions in male patients several rare urogenital disorders need to be considered. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 26-year-old mentally disabled young man was examined because of a fever, altered behaviour and elevated infection parameters. A CT-scan of the abdomen showed signs of prostatitis. Transrectal ultrasonography was performed under general anaesthesia to rule out a prostatic abscess. This showed prominent, dilated seminal vesicles. Under transurethral sight, large amounts of pus was drained from the ejaculatory ducts by digital rectal examination (unique video). Intravenous antibiotic therapy was continued and the patient successfully recovered. CONCLUSION: Acute bacterial prostatitis is diagnosed based on the clinical presentation of the patient. When there is fever without a focus or no recovery following antibiotic therapy, an abscess of the prostate or empyema of the seminal vesicles should be considered.

Obstructive azoospermia is a kind of common clinical disease, which often happens in epididymis, vas deferens and ejaculatory duct obstruction and accounts for male infertility. Azoospermia, which is caused by obstruction of the ejaculatory duct, is relatively rare. but the development of endoscopic technology now allows the disease to be resolved by surgery. In the past, transurethral resection of ejaculatory duct (TURED) has been used to treat patients with ejaculatory duct obstruction and azoosperm-free disease. But with the further study of TURED operation in recent years, as well as in patients with postoperative follow-up results showed that the urine - tube reflux and retrograde ejaculation ejaculation the incidence of iatrogenic injury is higherduring the TURED.therefore, in recent years, some experts committed to seeking a less damage and better effect of the surgical method. With the continuous development of endoscopic technology, seminal vesiculoscopy has come into being, which also creates conditions for further understanding the structure and function of the seminal vesicle and distal seminal duct, accurate diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of the currently discovered diseases. In this article, we summarized the semen abnormalities associated with seminal vesiculoscopy in the treatment of ejaculatory duct obstruction, and also reviewed the surgical methods, clinical application and research progress of seminal vesiculoscopy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of seminal vesiculoscopy-assisted thulium laser ablation (SVS-TLA) in the treatment of oligoasthenozoospermia or azoospermia induced by ejaculatory duct obstruction (EDO). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data on 42 cases of EDO-induced oligoasthenozoospermia or azoospermia in our Clinic of Andrology from April 2018 to January 2020, all definitely diagnosed and treated by SVS-TLA. We followed up the patients regularly after operation, obtained their routine semen parameters at 3, 6 and 9 months postoperatively, examined them by t-test and compared them with the baseline. RESULTS: Operations were successfully completed in all the 42 cases, with an average surgery time of 52.7 minutes. Compared with the routine semen parameters collected 2 weeks before surgery, the semen volume, sperm concentration and total sperm motility of the patients were all significantly improved at 3, 6 and 9 months postoperatively (P < 0.01). Sperm were found in 40 cases at 3 months and in the other 2 cases at 6 and 9 months after surgery. Postoperative complications were observed in 7 cases, including epididymitis, perineal or testicular pain, and hematuria, which all disappeared after corresponding symptomatic treatment. No such serious complications as retrograde ejaculation, rectal injury, urethral stricture or urinary incontinence occurred in any of the cases after operation. CONCLUSION: SVS-TLA is a safe and effective option for the treatment of EDO, which can significantly improve the semen quality of the patient without causing serious postoperative complications.

Genitourinary anomalies constitute a large proportion of congenital malformations. However seminal tract anomalies, particularly ejaculatory duct (ED) anomalies are very rare and little information exists on the topic. We are reporting a very rare case of bilateral ectopic EDs opening in the bladder trigone in a 33-year-old gentleman presenting for evaluation for primary infertility. The patient's semen analysis showed low-ejaculate-volume, fructose negative, acidic pH and azoospermia. His hormonal profile was normal. Cystoscopy revealed an empty posterior urethra, and the verumontanum and the openings of the EDs could not be identified in the posterior urethra. The ED openings were found inside the bladder trigone. Vasography combined with cystoscopy confirmed the opening of the ED in the trigone following Intra-vasal injection of methylene blue. Our patient had a successful intracytoplasmic sperm injection using testicular spermatozoa that resulted in a healthy baby boy. We also did a formal literature review through PUBMED, MEDLINE and Google Scholar with the search term (ectopic ED). Search results were filtered to exclude vas deferens ectopia. Our literature search revealed five studies comprising 24 patients with ectopic EDs. Mean age at diagnosis was 29.88 ± 12.88 years. The most common presenting symptom was hemospermia. The ectopic EDs most commonly opened in a midline cyst (21 cases), bladder trigone (1 case), or bladder neck (1 case). The most common management used for symptomatic patients with ectopic EDs opening in the midline cyst was through transurethral fenestration. In conclusion, ectopic ED openings in the bladder trigone are very rare. Management varies by case depending on the presentation, anatomy of underlying anomaly, associated complication/s and desire for fertility.

This study aimed to compare the success rates of two approaches for seminal vesiculoscopy: through the interior of the prostatic utricle and through the neck of the prostatic utricle. The patients were divided into two groups based on the seminal vesiculoscopy used. Group A was an interior of the prostatic utricle group (152 cases), and group B was a neck of the prostatic utricle group (146 cases). The general clinical data, intraoperative conditions and surgical results of the two groups were compared. Compared with group A, group B had a higher surgical success rate (94.5% vs. 62.5%, p < .001), a shorter operation time (33 min vs. 45 min, p < .001), less blood loss (0.5 ml vs. 2 ml, p < .001), a higher pain relief rate (86.6% vs. 52.3%, p < .001), a higher remission rate of haemospermia (82.2% vs. 58.5%, p = .011), a lower recurrence rate of pain (10.4% vs. 35.4%, p < .001), a lower recurrence rate of haemospermia (15.6% vs. 37.7%, p = .014), a higher symptom remission rate of the lower urinary tract (90.9% vs. 50.0%, p = .030), a higher remission rate of scrotal moisture (84.6% vs. 45.5%, p = .042) and a higher remission rate of frequent spermatorrhea (80.0% vs. 55.6%, p = .033). Seminal vesiculoscopy undertaken through the neck of the prostatic utricle has the characteristics of high success rate, short operation time and good surgical effect and is worthy of promotion and application.

BACKGROUND: Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) parameters are not standardized, especially in men of reproductive age. Hence, the European Academy of Andrology (EAA) promoted a multicenter study to assess the TRUS characteristics of healthy-fertile men (HFM) to establish normative parameters. OBJECTIVES: To report and discuss the prostate and seminal vesicles (SV) reference ranges and characteristics in HFM and their associations with clinical, seminal, biochemical parameters. METHODS: 188 men (35.6 ± 6.0 years) from a cohort of 248 HFM were studied, evaluating, on the same day, clinical, biochemical, seminal, TRUS parameters following Standard Operating Procedures. RESULTS: TRUS reference ranges and characteristics of the prostate and SV of HFM are reported herein. The mean PV was ∼25 ml. PV lower and upper limits were 15 and 35 ml, defining prostate hypotrophy and enlargement, respectively. PV was positively associated with age, waistline, current smoking (but not with T levels), seminal volume (and negatively with seminal pH), prostate inhomogeneity, macrocalcifications, calcification size and prostate arterial parameters, SV volume before and after ejaculation, deferential and epididymal size. Prostate calcifications and inhomogeneity were frequent, while midline prostatic cysts were rare and small. Ejaculatory duct abnormalities were absent. Periprostatic venous plexus size was positively associated with prostate calcifications, SV volume and arterial peak systolic velocity. Lower and upper limits of SV anterior-posterior diameter after ejaculation were 6 and 16 mm, defining SV hypotrophy or dilation, respectively. SV total volume before ejaculation and delta SV total volume (DSTV) positively correlated with ejaculate volume, and DSTV correlated positively with sperm progressive motility. SV total volume after ejaculation was associated negatively with SV ejection fraction and positively with distal ampullas size. SV US abnormalities were rare. No association between TRUS and time to pregnancy, number of children or history of miscarriage was observed. CONCLUSIONS: The present findings will help in better understanding male infertility pathophysiology and the meaning of specific TRUS findings.

This study aimed to establish animal models with different degrees of ejaculatory duct obstruction. Forty-eight male rats aged 14-15 weeks were randomly divided into three groups (n = 16): control, complete ejaculatory duct obstruction (tied around the lower seminal vesicle gland and ductus deferens with a 2-0 silk ligature), and partial ejaculatory duct obstruction (padded with a wire guide). Mortality, complications, seminal vesicle morphology and histopathology were compared in the three groups at 4 and 8 weeks postoperatively. In the complete ejaculatory duct obstruction group, seminal vesicle weight decreased gradually with increased obstruction time compared with those of the control group (p < 0.05); moreover, stone-like material was occasionally observed. In the partial ejaculatory duct obstruction group, there was an increase followed by a decrease in seminal vesicle weight in the postoperative period compared with that of the control group (p < 0.05). Histopathological lesions of seminal vesicles were observed in the complete and partial ejaculatory duct obstruction groups (8 weeks postoperatively). We successfully established animal models of complete and partial ejaculatory duct obstruction, which provide an easy-to-use tool for studying seminal vesicle changes after ejaculatory duct obstruction.

RESUMO

Zinner's syndrome is a rare congenital abnormality of the Wolffian ducts in male patients. It consists of the triad of renal agenesis, ipsilateral seminal vesicle dilatation, and obstruction of the ejaculatory duct. Symptoms often occur after puberty and can include hematospermia, painful ejaculation, dysuria, and local discomfort. We present the case of a 15-year-old patient with this rare condition who was treated surgically after the diagnosis was confirmed.

Objectives: The current study aimed to evaluate the long-term outcomes of TURED (transurethral resection of the ejaculatory duct) in treating male infertility due to ejaculatory duct obstruction (EDO) to the short-term follow-up. Methods: From 2000 to 2010, we retrospectively reviewed 30 men with infertility resulting from EDO who underwent TURED. Information on preoperative evaluation of patients was collected from the medical records. Standardized semen analysis was performed 6 weeks, 3 months, and 12 months postoperatively, as well as after a 7-year follow-up. Results: The average age of patients was 35.5 ± 2.6. All patients had low ejaculate volume and normal range of the mean serum hormone levels (gonadotropins and testosterone). Transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) assessment revealed midline cysts in 46.7% (n = 14 cases), a seminal vesicle dilatation in 83.3% (25/30 cases), and ejaculatory duct dilatation in 76.7% (23/30 patients). In addition, two patients (6.6%) underwent MRI pelvis to confirm equivocal EDO by TRUS. After short-term and long-term follow-up, semen parameters improved significantly in 90% of cases vs 63.3% of cases, respectively, with statistically insignificant differences in all parameters (p ≥ 0.1). Based on subgroup analysis, semen parameters improved in all partial EDO and cystic EDO cases vs complete EDO and noncystic EDO, respectively. Spontaneous pregnancies were achieved in 10 (33.3%) vs 8 (26.6%) cases after short and long term, respectively. Regarding post-TURED complications, we reported 23.3% (n = 7). Conclusion: TURED is an effective treatment for EDO. It significantly improves all semen parameters and improves the symptoms related to EDO after short and long-term follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Ductus deferens may manifest in a variety of anomalies such as its absence, duplication, ectopy, or diverticulum. Ectopic seminal tract opening has two main types, ectopic ejaculatory duct opening, and ectopic vas deferens opening. Generally, ductus deferens anomalies affect approximately 0.05% of the population. Patients may be asymptomatic or complaining of urinary tract infections and/or epididymitis. Most of these cases are associated with renal dysplasia. To confirm the diagnosis Cystourethroscopy catheterization and retrograde urethrogram should be performed, but the definitive diagnosis is done by vasography. The definitive treatment is complete surgical resection of the pathological urogenital connection. This case is commonly discovered while exploring other findings such as testicular torsion and inguinal hernia. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of an 11-year-old male who presented with gross hematuria and numerous congenital malformations including a left polydactyly clubfoot, polyorchidism, with several surgical procedures, and left kidney dysgenesis. Surgery was performed for a left inguinal hernia, during which a third undescended testicle was discovered incidentally and was eradicated. A retrograde urethrogram was performed to establish the diagnosis. A fistula- that is connected with the left ureter- was resected. The histopathologic findings confirmed the diagnosis of true duplication of the Vas deferens, with communication between the ureter and the vas deferens. By follow-up, the kidney function tests were within normal limits. CONCLUSIONS: This case report aims to highlight the early diagnosis and management of the duplicated vas deferens and the associated congenital malformations to improve the prognosis and kidney function and to avoid long-term complications.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical effect and safety of transutricular seminal vesiculoscopy in the treatment of refractory hemospermia. METHODS: Using 6Fr ureteroscopy through the prostatic utricle, we treated 103 cases of refractory hemospermia with distal seminal duct obstructive lesions, including 12 cases complicated by distal seminal duct cyst. We rinsed the seminal duct cavity, cleaned out the stones, removed the cyst wall with holmium laser and followed up the patients for 12 months postoperatively. RESULTS: The operations were successfully completed in all the cases but 1 (0.9%), in which the ureteroscope failed to enter the bilateral seminal vesicles. The operation time was (47 ± 9) min. No rectal injury or acute epididymitis occurred intraoperatively, nor fever, long-term dysuria or long-term hematuria after surgery. Postoperative follow-up showed that bloody semen symptoms vanished in 93 (90.3%) of the cases, improved significantly in 4 (3.9%) and not significantly in 2 (1.9%), and 3 cases of recurrence (2.9%) were all relieved after reoperation. CONCLUSION: Transutricular seminal vesiculoscopy has the advantages of clear anatomic vision, minor invasiveness and significant effectiveness in the treatment of refractory hemospermia. What's more, holmium laser is better than plasmakinetic resection in removal of the cyst wall.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the diagnosis and treatment of ectopic seminal duct opening into the urethra. METHODS: We reviewed the literature and retrospectively analyzed the clinical data on a case of sex development abnormality. The patient was a 16-year-old gender female seeking medical improvement of female signs, admitted to hospital with "clitoris hypertrophy, no menstruation and chromosome karyotype 46XY", treated by bilateral orchiectomy, and simultaneously examined by seminal vesiculography and cystoscopy. RESULTS: Seminal vesiculography showed the ectopic opening of the right ejaculatory duct into the urethra accompanied by dysplasia of the seminal vesicle. Cystoscopy exhibited a fissrure-like opening in the right wall of the urethra but no verumontanum. Postoperative pathology revealed bilateral undeveloped testes and epididymides. CONCLUSION: Ectopic opening of the seminal duct into the urethra is extremely rare and often complicated by many malformations, for the diagnosis of which the most reliable options are seminal vesiculography and retrograde radiography through the ectopic orifice under the cystoscope. The treatment of the disease should follow the principles of timeliness, individualization and consideration of associated malformations.

RESUMO

This study described the anatomy and histology of the male reproductive system in Chrysomela populi, which is an economically important species belonging to the family Chrysomelidae. Therefore, reproductive biology has been studied to combat this insect. As well as, the characters associated with the reproductive tract have been potential to discuss aspects of the system and to better understand the reproductive dynamics. The male reproductive system of C. populi has a pair of testes, a pair of vas efferentia and deferentia, a pair of seminal vesicles, a pair of accessory glands, an ejaculatory bulb, an ejaculatory duct, and an aedeagus. The testis consists of two flower-shaped lobes. Each testis has 20 sperm tubules (testicular follicles) containing cysts of germ cells at various developmental stages within the light orange peritoneal sheath. Testicular follicles are composed of three different (growth, maturation, and differentiation) zones. In the middle region of each testis joins with the vas efferens. The testis is attached to the seminal vesicle by a small stalk like vas efferens. In the lumen of the vas efferens, seminal vesicle, and vas deferens, sperms form clumps in the form of thin threads. The proximal end of the vas deferens is connected to the common ejaculatory duct. It joins with the ejaculatory bulb. Around the ejaculator bulb, there is a pair of convoluted, flat-surface tubular structure accessory glands. Posterior ejaculatory duct joins with the aedeagus.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the transrectal and scrotal ultrasonographic features of acquired obstructive azoospermia and evaluate the role of ultrasonography in the location diagnosis of acquired obstructive azoospermia patients. METHODS: Retrospectively analysis of 92 cases of acquired obstructive azoospermia in recent years. All the patients underwent transrectal and scrotal ultrasonography. The ultrasonographic features were observed of testis, epididymis, scrotal segment of vas deferens, seminal vesicle, ejaculatory duct and prostate. Eighty cases with normal semen were taken as control group. RESULTS: Among the 92 cases of acquired obstructive azoospermia, 28 cases were prostate midline cyst, 32 cases were stone or calcification of the ejaculation duct and 21 cases were chronic seminal vesicle inflammation, which were found through transrectal ultrasonography; 27 cases were vas deferens dilation, 30 cases had abnormal mass of epididymis tail, 31 cases were epididymis thickness with reticular change, 8 cases were cystic dilatation of rete testis, which were found through scrotal ultrasonography. Compared with the control group, ultrasound examination increased the detection rate of distal seminal duct lesions and epididymal lesions in acquired obstructive azoospermia patients (p<.01). Comparison of testicular volume between case group and control group did not reveal significant difference (p>.05). The thickness of the head, body and tail of epididymis in case group was significantly bigger than that in control group (p<.01). CONCLUSION: Transrectal and scrotal ultrasonography can find lesions in different parts of the seminal passage. Acquired obstructive azoospermia patients have increased rate of distal seminal duct lesions, epididymal lesions and epididymis volume. Transrectal and scrotum ultrasonography can provide reliable imaging evidence for the location diagnosis of acquired obstructive azoospermia.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of real-time transrectal ultrasound-guided seminal vesiculoscopy (TRUS-SVS) in the treatment of azoospermia secondary to ejaculatory duct obstruction. METHODS: This retrospective study included 40 cases of azoospermia secondary to bilateral ejaculatory ducts obstruction treated by TRUS-SVS from June 2016 to June 2018 after failure to enter the vesiculoscope through the ejaculatory duct or prostatic utricle. We analyzed the success rate of surgery, operation time, postoperative complications, treatment results, and application value of TRUS-SVS. RESULTS: Real-time TRUS-SVS was successfully performed in 36 (90.0%) of the cases, 33 through bilateral and the other 3 through unilateral seminal vesicle, with a mean operation time of (32.8 ± 16.6) min. Thirty-seven of the cases were followed up for 6-15 (mean 9.3) months, of which sperm were found in 31 at 1-3 months and in 25 at 3-12 months, and pregnancies achieved in 9 cases within 12 months after surgery. No serious complications as retrograde ejaculation, urinary incontinence and rectal injury were observed postoperatively, except 2 cases of epididymitis and 2 cases of hematuria, which were all cured. CONCLUSIONS: For the patients who failed in seminal vesiculoscopy through the ejaculatory duct or prostatic utricle, real-time TRUS-SVS is a recommended procedure with the advantages of a high success rate, less damage to the prostate and rectum, and benefit to the improvement of semen quality.

Herein we present a previously unreported rare case of mucinous adenocarcinoma arising from a congenital ejaculatory duct cyst. Radiographic and endoscopic examinations revealed the tumor occurred in a cyst running through the prostate. Initially, the immunohistochemical pathology results showed that it was a metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma, but no other primary lesions were clinically evidenced. Based on the embryonic development process of the male urogenital tract, the malformation of the patient's ejaculatory duct, and the pathological examination of the resected specimen, we considered the tumor to be a primary mucinous adenocarcinoma which originating from the hypoplastic ejaculatory duct. The tumor may have developed from the foci of intestinal metaplasia from cloacal remnants during embryonic development.

RESUMO

Zinner syndrome (ZS) is a rare congenital malformation due to abnormal development of the urogenital tract. It is caused by a growth failure of the distal part of the Müllerian duct in early embryogenesis. It is characterised by the triad of unilateral renal agenesis, ipsilateral seminal vesicle cyst and ipsilateral ejaculatory duct obstruction. Over the years, several cases have been reported in the literature since the initial report by Zinner in 1914. This syndrome is frequently misdiagnosed because it may present different patterns and the symptoms may be not specific. In this paper, we present two patients with two different patterns of presentation of Zinner syndrome.

Peptides present in the seminal fluid of Drosophila melanogaster can function as antimicrobial agents, enzyme inhibitors and as pheromones that elicit physiological and behavioural responses in the post-mated female. Understanding the molecular interactions by which these peptides influence reproduction requires detailed knowledge of their molecular structures. However, this information is often lacking and cannot be gleaned from just gene sequences and standard proteomic data. We now report the native structures of four seminal fluid peptides (andropin, CG42782, Met75C and Acp54A1) from the ejaculatory duct of male D. melanogaster. The mature CG42782, Met75C and Acp54A1 peptides each have a cyclic structure formed by a disulfide bond, which will reduce conformational freedom and enhance metabolic stability. In addition, the presence of a penultimate Pro in CG42782 and Met75C will help prevent degradation by carboxypeptidases. Met75C has undergone more extensive post-translational modifications with the formation of an N-terminal pyroglutamyl residue and the attachment of a mucin-like O-glycan to the side chain of Thr4. Both of these modifications are expected to further enhance the stability of the secreted peptide. The glycan has a rare zwitterionic structure comprising an O-linked N-acetyl hexosamine, a hexose and, unusually, phosphoethanolamine. A survey of various genomes showed that andropin, CG42782, and Acp54A1 are relatively recent genes and are restricted to the melanogaster subgroup. Met75C, however, was also found in members of the obscura species groups and in Scaptodrosophila lebanonensis. Andropin is related to the cecropin gene family and probably arose by tandem gene duplication, whereas CG42782, Met75C and Acp54A1 possibly emerged de novo. We speculate that the post-translational modifications that we report for these gene products will be important not only for a biological function, but also for metabolic stability and might also facilitate transport across tissue barriers, such as the blood-brain barrier of the female insect. BIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Seminal fluid peptides of D. melanogaster function as antimicrobials, enzyme inhibitors and as pheromones, eliciting physiological and behavioural responses in the post-mated female. A fuller understanding of how these peptides influence reproduction requires knowledge not only of their primary structure, but also of their post-translational modification. However, this information is often lacking and difficult to glean from standard proteomic data. The reported modifications, including the unusual glycosylation, adds much to our knowledge of this important class of peptides in this model organism, par excellence.
