RESUMO

AIM: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) nursing has become more prominent with the increase in chronic HIV infections. This study examined articles related to HIV nursing to determine how the profession has developed and its future direction. DESIGN: A bibliometric analysis was conducted. METHODS: HIV nursing-related articles published in the Web of Science core collection between 1999 and 2022 were searched. VOSviewer was used to identify the contributions of countries, institutions and authors in HIV-related care. Collaborative maps, hot topics and keywords trends were analysed using VOSviewer and CiteSpace. RESULTS: A total of 1513 publications were extracted. An increase in articles published between 1999 and 2012 was observed. After 2012, the increase in the number of publications was relatively stable. Since 2016, a downward trend in the number of publications has occurred. The USA, South Africa and the UK were the leading contributors to publications related to HIV nursing. The focus of the HIV nursing research has gradually shifted from "HIV infection", "risk factors", and "transmission routes" to "social support", "depression", and "public health". The result shows that increased collaboration among countries/regions can improve the development of HIV nursing and effectively reduce the global HIV infection rate. The mental health of patients has become a research centre in the field of HIV nursing. This study provides direction in clinical practice and future research areas in this field.

RESUMO

Healthcare is a highly regulated industry whose practitioners are responsible for adhering to laws, regulations, policies, and standards of care. When poor outcomes occur, a malpractice case can arise, thus beginning the litigation process. Because nurses are leaders in the delivery of care, they may become involved in legal claims. The purpose of this article is to provide information, as a foundation for nurses who are unfamiliar with navigating the litigation process in a legal claim, and to help nurses build confidence in the process. An overview of the litigation process, nursing licensure, and essential legal terms is provided. A case scenario is introduced that addresses the role of a nurse in an orthopaedic medical malpractice case.

RESUMO

Team cohesion, as a necessary condition for the cooperation and development of a team, has been shown to have a strong association with team performance. However, the mechanism of this internal correlation is unclear and more in-depth studies are lacking. The study aimed to explore the complex links between the dimensions of team cohesion and performance in nurses. A total of 1639 practice nurses from 118 nursing teams were included in this cross-sectional study. Data were collected using the Team Cohesion Scale (including consistency of affection, behavior, and cognition) and the Team Effectiveness Scale (including cooperation satisfaction, and task performance). Using network analysis, the team cohesion and performance network was constructed, and the strength and bridge strength of nodes were calculated. The results showed that the edges between team cohesion and performance dimensions were all positively correlated. Cooperation satisfaction and consistency of affection are the core variables in the network. Interventions targeting cooperation satisfaction and consistency of affection need to be developed at the team level to maximize team cohesion and performance among nurses.

RESUMO

Does nursing possess a character? The idea that professions have characters is hard to sustain, and the possibility that nursing as a collectively or occupation lacks a character is worth considering. To this end it is argued that absent robust theoretical and/or evidential scaffolding it is implausible to suppose that nursing has an objectively real (reality describing) character, and if 'nursing's character' is chimeric or illusory, aspects of our conception of professionalism require reappraisal. Specifically, traits and values that attach to nursing and are implicated in the concept of character are, shorn of their moorings, untethered. This may be significant.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nursing disciplines do not currently have a shared understanding of addiction or recovery to address their contribution to their patients' needs. Recent developments of addiction nursing models, alongside an international move to standardise language, is slow to be reflected in nurses' perceptions in acute hospital settings. AIM: To explore nurses' understanding of addiction and recovery in acute general hospitals. METHODS: A qualitative study with semi-structured open-ended questions informed by a prior literature review was undertaken with nurses working in an acute general hospital in Dublin, Ireland. RESULTS: The identified themes were the knowledge of addiction, including physical and psychological needs, and the understanding of recovery, patient-centred services and the impact of the individual's environment. CONCLUSION: Standardising language for addiction and recovery and improving addiction education will give nurses a better understanding of the chronic nature of substance use and the importance of this in providing high-quality health care.

RESUMO

The onset of COVID-19 and the murder of George Floyd shed light on social justice inequities, disparities in health care and the continuing rise of racism within society. Studies conducted by the American Nurses Foundation also revealed acts of racism within the nursing profession. The creation of the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing and the American Nurses Association's issuance of an apology through its Racial Reckoning work have begun a revolution within the nursing profession to address this phenomenon. This commentary will provide a brief overview of collaborative initiatives currently underway and address ways in which nurses can do their part to obliterate racism from the nursing profession.

RESUMO

A nurse graduating in 2018, Noémie's guiding principle has always been her desire to discover IDE practice outside our borders. To this end, once she had her diploma in hand, and in parallel with her nursing practice in her native Isère region, she enriched her knowledge by taking a university diploma (DU) in "international solidarity action in humanitarian health". When she obtained her diploma, she decided to settle in French Polynesia, a French territory at the end of the world. Here, she shares her experiences as a nurse in an isolated island environment, highlighting the added value of this experience.

RESUMO

U.S. Supreme Court rulings on reproductive rights and affirmative action inadvertently present the nursing profession with a propitious opportunity to capitalize on the nation's rich mosaic of iceberg demographic identities-inherited and acquired traits that may not be visibly apparent-to address imminent challenges such as worker shortages and other perplexities within the workplace milieu.
