The lack of commonly agreed terminology in pharmacy field is highly prevalent and may have influence on the relevance and robustness of the area, especially how others see pharmacy literature. Potential consequences of this poor perception of pharmacy field by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) could be the omission of several pharmacy-related Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) or the low indexing rate of pharmacy practice journals in MEDLINE. Journal name abbreviation, under the responsibility of the NLM, is the unambiguous way to identify a journal in bibliographic references and catalogs. The present study investigated the consistency of pharmacy journal abbreviations in the NLM Catalog. For the 290 journals containing any word with the root pharm in their names, a consistent procedure for NLM title abbreviations was found for 27 of the words in journal names but not for the abbreviation "Pharm", which represented several words with very different meanings: pharmaceutical, pharmaceutics, pharmacists, and pharmacy. The use by the NLM of different abbreviation for pharmaceutical and pharmaceutics would increase journal identification clarity.

The recognition, disambiguation, and expansion of medical abbreviations and acronyms is of upmost importance to prevent medically-dangerous misinterpretation in natural language processing. To support recognition, disambiguation, and expansion, we present the Medical Abbreviation and Acronym Meta-Inventory, a deep database of medical abbreviations. A systematic harmonization of eight source inventories across multiple healthcare specialties and settings identified 104,057 abbreviations with 170,426 corresponding senses. Automated cross-mapping of synonymous records using state-of-the-art machine learning reduced redundancy, which simplifies future application. Additional features include semi-automated quality control to remove errors. The Meta-Inventory demonstrated high completeness or coverage of abbreviations and senses in new clinical text, a substantial improvement over the next largest repository (6-14% increase in abbreviation coverage; 28-52% increase in sense coverage). To our knowledge, the Meta-Inventory is the most complete compilation of medical abbreviations and acronyms in American English to-date. The multiple sources and high coverage support application in varied specialties and settings. This allows for cross-institutional natural language processing, which previous inventories did not support. The Meta-Inventory is available at https://bit.ly/github-clinical-abbreviations .

Twenty-years ago, considering the host specificity of Pneumocystis species, the human-derived Pneumocystis, Pneumocystis carinii formae specialis hominis, was renamed Pneumocystis jirovecii. Pneumocystis carinii formae specialis carinii was finally renamed Pneumocystis carinii and kept for the species derived from Rattus norvegicus. P. jirovecii is now widely used by most authors. The PCP acronym that initially referred to "Pneumocystis cariniipneumonia" was contemporaneously redefined to stand for Pneumocystispneumonia in order to avoid changing the acronym of the name of the disease that clinicians have used for several decades. Using analysis of multidata bases on PubMed, we have noted a recent acceleration in the use of PJP for Pneumocystis jiroveciipneumonia, which may be grammatically correct but not in accordance with retaining PCP, which was proposed in the early 2000s. Through this reminder, in order to standardize the literature on P. jirovecii, we plead for the use of only one acronym, PCP. LAY SUMMARY: Through this reminder on Pneumocystis nomenclature, we plead for the use of only one acronym, PCP, the retention of which was proposed in the early 2000s, and which currently stands for Pneumocystispneumonia.

BACKGROUND: The Science, PE, & Me! (SPEM) curriculum is a concept-based physical education curriculum that offers students coherent educational experiences for constructing health-related fitness knowledge through movement experiences. The purpose of this study was to evaluate students' motivational response to the SPEM curriculum from the situational interest perspective. METHODS: The study used a cluster randomized controlled design in which 30 elementary schools in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the eastern United States were randomly assigned to an experimental or comparison condition. Although all students in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades in the targeted schools were eligible to participate in the study, a random sample of students from the experimental (n = 1749; 15 schools) and comparison groups (n = 1985; 15 schools) provided data. Students' motivational response to the SPEM curriculum or comparison curriculum was measured using the previously validated Situational Interest Scale-Elementary. Data were analyzed using structural mean modeling. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that the experimental group (as reference group) showed significantly higher enjoyment (z = -2.01), challenge (z = -6.54), exploration (z = -12.195), novelty (z = -8.80), and attention demand (z = -7.90) than the comparison group. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that the SPEM curriculum created a more situationally interesting context for learning than the comparison physical education curriculum.

Introduction: We are currently at the dawn of a revolution in the field of fatty liver diseases. Recently, a consensus recommended 'metabolic (dysfunction) associated fatty liver disease' (MAFLD) as a more appropriate name to describe fatty liver disease associated with metabolic dysfunction, ultimately suggesting that the old acronym nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) should be abandoned.Areas covered: In this viewpoint, we discuss the reasons and relevance of this semantic modification through five different conceptual domains, i.e., 1) signals, 2) reasons, 2) promises, 4) challenges and 5) steps ahead.Expert opinion: The road ahead will not be traveled without major challenges. Further research to evaluate the positive and negative impacts of the nomenclature change is warranted. However, this modification should encourage increased disease awareness among policymakers and stimulate public and private investments leading to more effective therapy development.

This letter discusses the limitations of the use of filters to enhance the accuracy of the extraction of parenthetic abbreviations from scholarly publications and proposes the usage of the parentheses level count algorithm to efficiently extract entities between parentheses from raw texts as well as of machine learning-based supervised classification techniques for the identification of biomedical abbreviations to significantly reduce the removal of acronyms including disallowed punctuations.

Some acronyms are useful and are widely understood, but many of the acronyms used in scientific papers hinder understanding and contribute to the increasing fragmentation of science. Here we report the results of an analysis of more than 24 million article titles and 18 million article abstracts published between 1950 and 2019. There was at least one acronym in 19% of the titles and 73% of the abstracts. Acronym use has also increased over time, but the re-use of acronyms has declined. We found that from more than one million unique acronyms in our data, just over 2,000 (0.2%) were used regularly, and most acronyms (79%) appeared fewer than 10 times. Acronyms are not the biggest current problem in science communication, but reducing their use is a simple change that would help readers and potentially increase the value of science.

Acronyms frequently occur in clinical text, which makes their identification, disambiguation and resolution an important task in clinical natural language processing. This paper contributes to acronym resolution in Spanish through the creation of a set of sense inventories organized by clinical specialty containing acronyms, their expansions, and corpus-driven features. The new acronym resource is composed of 51 clinical specialties with 3,603 acronyms in total, from which we identified 228 language independent acronyms and 391 language dependent expansions. We further analyzed the sense inventory across specialties and present novel insights of acronym usage in biomedical Spanish texts.

OBJECTIVES: The objective is to identify studies that have assessed methodological shortcuts for undertaking rapid reviews (RRs) and mapping these to review conduct stages and Methodological Expectations of Cochrane Intervention Reviews (MECIR) guidance. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We conducted a systematic scoping review. We searched multiple databases (e.g., MEDLINE, Embase), which were supplemented by grey literature searching. Methods were defined a priori in a published protocol. RESULTS: Out of 1,873 records, 90 publications were divided into four RR categories: formal evaluation (n = 14), development, which included four subcategories (n = 65), comparison (n = 2), and applying reporting guidelines/critical appraisal tools (n = 3), and a systematic review surrogate category (n = 6). Four formal evaluation studies were composite evaluations, including more than one shortcut simultaneously. The remaining 10 studies evaluated viable (e.g., including English-only publications) and unviable (e.g., single-reviewer screening) shortcuts, covering five key dimensions and five 'other' (e.g., involving stakeholders) considerations while conducting a review. Because of complexities around shortcuts evaluated, only a cursory mapping to MECIR criteria was possible. CONCLUSION: Some methods shortcuts may be valid in the context of RRs, but limitations in the studies may limit their applicability. The results will serve to inform discussions within Cochrane regarding possible future implementation of RRs.

Telemedicine is rapidly becoming ubiquitous as the medical profession adjusts its practice to provide optimal care to patients in the context of the COVID19 pandemic. The ability to provide accurate dermatological advice via telemedicine is dependent on the receipt of high-quality clinical images and accurate clinical context, on which clinicians receive little education during medical school and subsequent training. Clinicians can improve their capture, delivery and storage of images using the CLOSE-UP acronym, which encapsulates important considerations in the clinical photography process.

OBJECTIVE: To develop an algorithm for identifying acronym 'sense' from clinical notes without requiring a clinically annotated training set. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our algorithm is called CLASSE GATOR: Clinical Acronym SenSE disambiGuATOR. CLASSE GATOR extracts acronyms and definitions from PubMed Central (PMC). A logistic regression model is trained using words associated with specific acronym-definition pairs from PMC. CLASSE GATOR uses this library of acronym-definitions and their corresponding word feature vectors to predict the acronym 'sense' from Beth Israel Deaconess (MIMIC-III) neonatal notes. RESULTS: We identified 1,257 acronyms and 8,287 definitions including a random definition from 31,764 PMC articles on prenatal exposures and 2,227,674 PMC open access articles. The average number of senses (definitions) per acronym was 6.6 (min = 2, max = 50). The average internal 5-fold cross validation was 87.9 % (on PMC). We found 727 unique acronyms (57.29 %) from PMC were present in 105,044 neonatal notes (MIMIC-III). We evaluated the performance of acronym prediction using 245 manually annotated clinical notes with 9 distinct acronyms. CLASSE GATOR achieved an overall accuracy of 63.04 % and outperformed random for 8/9 acronyms (88.89 %) when applied to clinical notes. We also compared our algorithm with UMN's acronym set, and found that CLASSE GATOR outperformed random for 63.46 % of 52 acronyms when using logistic regression, 75.00 % when using Bert and 76.92 % when using BioBert as the prediction algorithm within CLASSE GATOR. CONCLUSIONS: CLASSE GATOR is the first automated acronym sense disambiguation method for clinical notes. Importantly, CLASSE GATOR does not require an expensive manually annotated acronym-definition corpus for training.
