RESUMO

Even if references to the tools required to intervene after an accident can be found in the works of Bernardino Ramazzini (1633-1714) or Johann Peter Frank (1745-1821), it was only with the development of industrial manufacturing that the need to study means to prevent and intervene in cases of accident became evident. In October 1894 the III Congrés International des Accidents du Travail et des Assurances Sociales was held in Milan. The following year, the Milanese trade union movement acknowledged the necessity to address the problem of industrial accidents. In 1896 the Association for Medical Assistance in  Industrial Accidents was founded in Milan. A specific medical institute was set up, appropriate first aid tools were collected and first aid rooms in the main Milanese factories were inaugurated. Nevertheless, few data seem to be available regarding the manufacture and use of this equipment in industry. We analyzed more than fifty catalogs of European industrial products, between 1843 and 1914, to study the evolution of first aid equipment for industrial use. They reflect and attest to the evolution of medicine and surgery, although some models seem to be related to certain industrial categories (railways, electrical appliances), some were similar to ordinary first aid boxes, others were strictly related to surgery; some could only be used by physicians, and others only by workers. Identification, conservation, and reappraisal of these tools is essential for historians of occupational health because these objects were normally not preserved. The catalogues of industrial production are also precious sources, since they are rarely preserved in public libraries and deserve to be used for historical studies.

RESUMO

This article explores how medical practitioners read, used, and experienced medical trade catalogs in late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Britain. Reader responses to the catalog, a book-like publication promoting medical tools, appliances, and pharmaceuticals, have been chronically understudied, as have professional reading practices within medicine more generally. Yet, evidence suggests that clinicians frequently used the catalog and did so in three main ways: to order medical products, to acquire new information about these products, and to display their own product endorsements and product designs. The seemingly widespread nature of these practices demonstrates an individual and collective professional desire to improve medical practice and highlights the importance of studying professional reading practices in the cultural history of medicine.

RESUMO

For more than 30 years, Compendium has provided its readers with university-based continuing education and editorial, demonstrating the latest advances in clinical procedures and techniques. Using the same peer-reviewed format and influence/direction from Compendium's distinguished editorial board, Special Report will provide insight on the latest advances in product technologies and the resulting benefits to both you and your patients. A discussion by the author on new clinical/laboratory research and product development strategies, as well as what the results could mean for dental treatment, will also be included. Focusing on one product category per issue provides a detailed review of the category and a comprehensive resource to help guide your treatment planning process.

RESUMO

Recently we had prepared a recombinant antigen (Ld-rKE16) from a newly isolated Indian strain of Leishmania donovani (MHOM/IN/KE16/1998) with high sensitivity and specificity and the same has been commercialized. While comparing the sequence data of kinesin gene of this (KE16) strain and its expressed protein with another commercially available recombinant antigen (Lc-rK39) from kinesin gene of L. chagasi we found significant genetic and amino acid variations. This prompted us to undertake the present study to unravel whether the kinesin gene and its expressed protein from another old but Indian isolate of L. donovani (MHOM/IN/DD8/1968) had any genetic and amino acid heterogeneity. Sequencing of the kinesin gene revealed that the kinesin gene of DD8 strain is 3016bp long and has immunodominant region consisting of 4.8 tandem repeats, 117 base pairs each. Further blast analysis of the immunodominant regions of 5 strains of L. donovani revealed that it has only 79% homology with L. chagasi, and 80% homology with L. infantum; while it had 82% homology with Sudan strain of L. donovani, 82% with another (Morena) strain of Indian L. donovani but highest homology of 83% with L. donovani KE16 strain of India. We also evaluated the diagnostic potential of the recombinant DD8 antigen (Ld-rDD8) and compared the results with that of Ld-rKE16. The study revealed that Ld-rKDD8 antigen was less sensitive and specific as compared to rKE16 antigen for the diagnosis of visceral and post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis. This was probably due to prolong in vitro culture maintenance of the DD8 strain.
