RESUMO
The clinicopathological features of fifteen cases of granuloma inguinale diagnosed over a six-year period (1980-1985) are reported. The biopsy sites included cervix uteri, penis, vulva, perineum, anus, endometrium and vaginal wall, in decreasing order of frequency. The incidence was roughly equal in both sexes with an age range of 16-78 years. In females, the most frequent clinical diagnosis was carcinoma. The findings indicate that the clinical and histopathological diagnosis of granuloma inguinale entails a high degree of suspicion in a community where the disease is uncommon (AU)

In this study a series of postgranulomatous vulval carcinoma is analysed. The epidemiological and clinical aspects are studied and guidelines for management of such tumours are given. The problem of clinical staging of this variety of tumour is discussed (AU)

Between the years 1958 and 1973, 119 patients with primary invasive cancer of the vulva were treated at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Jamaica. Seventy-seven (64.7 percent) were premenopausal women. Because the pattern of the disease differed from that in late middle and older aged Jamaican women, the results of the disease are presented. The analysis stresses that vulvar carcinoma before menopause in our community is rare in the absence of various sexually transmitted granulomatous diseases of the vulva (AU)

VDRL tests were carried out on 774 adults aged 35-54 years in two typical African and East Indian communities in Guyana. Results were weakly reactive in 11.2 per cent. at reactive in 6.9 per cent., the reactivity rate being higher in Africans than in East Indians. Reactivity was not due to previous infection with yaws which has been absent from most of Guyana for many years in contrast to some parts of the West Indies. Clinical evidence of syphilis in Guyana is surprisingly infrequent in view of the high reactivity rates. (AU)

The incidence of lymphogranuloma venereum (L.G.V.) and of granuloma inguinale (G.I.) in Jamaica in 1960 was respectively 481 and 143 cases. This suggests that perhaps 42 or more cases may reach the United Kingdom in a year. The mode of spread is not necessarily venereal and auto-infection is possible. Although one may find a "typical" case both clinically, histologically, and serologically, in many cases exact diagnosis is not possible. The most effective treatment today, for both conditions, is tetracycline in large dosage. Surgery is sometimes necessary and its indications and difficulties are considered. Massive hypertrophy of the labia may occur in either disease. G.I., and probably L.G.V., predispose to development of carcinoma of the vulva. In such cases there may be a slower lymphatic spread (AU)

Data on 61 cases of carcinoma of the penis treated at the College Hospital, University of the West Indies, are reported, covering a period of six years. The various etiologic factors are discussed, with particular reference to granuloma inguinale. The literature is reviewed, and the observations here set forth are compared with those obtained by other investigators. (AU)

These two diseases are frequently confused with each other, partly because of the similiar names which they have been given, and partly because they often occur in the same communities, in the same type of patient, and sometimes in the same individual. Both produce chronic ulceration of the genitalia. The differential diagnosis is often difficult and must also take into account other diseases such as syphilis, chancroid, tuberculosis, amebiasis, schistosomiasis and carcinoma which may produce lesions of somewhat similiar appearance (AU)
