RESUMO

A series of 96 patients who were diagnosed with 120 ovarian neoplasms at surgery have been reviewed. Nine types of benign ovarian cysts were encountered. Benign cystic teratoma with an incidence of 30 percent was the commonest tumor. The majority of these were in the 20 - 30 year age range. The mean age of the patients with mucinous cyst adenoma and benign cystic teratoma was significantly less (p< 0.05) than those with serous cyst adenoma. The incidence of ovarian malignancies of 8.3 percent was low, and none of the malignancies was bilateral. There was a high incidence of 8.3 percent of milignant change in benign cystic teratomas. Abdominal pain and swelling were the symptoms most frequently experienced in patients with benign ovarian neoplasms. (AU)

RESUMO

A statistical survey of the incidence, age and sex distribution, and preferential sites of occurrence of tumours of the central nervous system observed at the University Hospital of the West Indies during a 15-year period is presented. Four hundred and seventy-six histologically confirmed neoplasms were recorded. Intracranial tumours were 7 times as common as those of the spinal cord. Of 416 intracranial neoplasms, there were 40 percent neuropithelial tumours, 21 percent meningiomas, 15 percent pituitary adenomas, 9 percent metastatic lesions, 6 percent congenital tumours, 5 percent vasoformative tumours, 3 percent nerve sheath tumours and 1 percent unclassified neoplasms. Men and women were equally affected. Meningiomas and pituitary adenomas were more frequent than in other reported series. Metastases were relatively more frequent in the spinal than in the intracranial group. Of the primary spinal tumours, those of nerve sheath origin were nearly three times as common as the meningiomas (AU)

RESUMO

Three hundred and fifty pituitary glands were studied in an selected autopsy series. The ages of the cases ranged from newborn to 104 years. None had clinical manifestations of pituitary dysfunction. Thirty-five glands (10 percent) showed 40 microadenomas which were distributed equally among males and females, occuring most frequently in the 8th decade. The clinical and autopsy records and X-ray films of the patients with microadenomas were reviewed. Of these, 50 percent were hypertensive, 20 percent were known diabetics and 14 percent were mildly to moderately obese. Two of the eight available X-ray films showed minor abnormalities of the sella turcica. The tumours were less than 5 mm in diameter and half of them were located away from the periphery of the gland. The findings were compared with those of other series (AU)

RESUMO

This report describes the investigation and treatment of a 30-year-old woman with Conn's Syndrome caused by an aldosterone-producing right adrenocortical adenoma associated with the classic triad of hypertension, hypokalaemia, and metabolic alkalosis. Removal of the tumour resulted in the reversal of these abnormalities. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of Conn's Syndrome in the West Indies. It is hoped that, with the presently improved diagnostic facilities in the region, this report will stimulate interest in finding other cases of this rare but important and treatable cause of secondary hypertension (AU)

RESUMO

A case of bronchial adenoma is reported which presented radiologically as an extensively calcified hilar mass on a routine chest radiograph of a patient undergoing surgery for varicose veins. This is of interest because, although bronchial adenomas may present in this way (Zellos, 1962; Baldwin and Grimes, 1967), calcification is not regarded as one of their radiological features. (AU)

RESUMO

Pure adenoma of the breast was seen in a 21-year-old Negro woman. The fibroadenoma shows a predominantly glandular component differentiating it from the lactating adenoma with which it has often been confused. A review of 300 cases of "adenomatous" breast tumors are presented and a classification is suggested. A world literature review revealed only two cases which fulfilled the criteria of pure ademona of the breast, emphasizing its extreme rarity. (AU)
