The authors describe the development and application of an intellectual model fitted to the environmental health sciences. The model became the basis for the design of a new study plan in addition to providing the strategy for recruitment of the faculty for the new School of Public Health of the San Diego State University in San Diego, California. They give an account of the circumstances leading up to the establishment of this institution, the gradual consolidation of the different health science programs into a single school with graduate studies leading to masters degrees in six main fields: environmental health, occupational health, epidemiology, maternal and child health, health services administration, and health development. The authors see the beginning of a redefinition of the function of the basic sciences represented in environmental health in the light of new knowledge and technology, and believe that all fields of knowledge (microbiology, parasitology and health development) will contribute as a unified whole to increase the capacity of public health to place both biological and environmental health problems in a context that society can control (Au)

The model for evaluation of the curriculum of a medical course presented in this paper was designed and used in the academic evaluation done in the School of Medicine of Lisandro Alvarado West-Central University, in Venezuela. The model includes an evaluation of program structures, the formulation of objectives, consistency among objectives, subject matter and exercises and between the institution's activities and objectives, the balance between theoretical and practical instruction, and the vertical transfer of the curriculum. Matrices were designed for all the variables used in the evaluation, and permitted the identification of relevant and irrelevant subject matter and of shortcomings in the curriculum that were hindrances to learning (Au)

The article describes the models of surgical care designed and tested at Valle University Hospital in Cali, Colombia, for the provision of more coverage of patients without detriment to the quality of their care. The program was based on an analysis of preliminary studies done on operations performed in the department of Valle del Cauca. The surgical problems were analyzed by the systems approach, and taking account of the physical, educational and administrative resources and the evaluation of those components. Finally, prototype models have been designed that have been successfully used to demonstrate the feasibility of increasing the coverage of patients by 80 per cent and attaining 90 per cent satisfaction of the patients themselves. Later, one of the models was put into practice at San Cristóbal, Venezuela, with similar results (Au)
