Depleted uranium: an overview of its properties and health effects

There has been much debate about the use of depleted uranium in the Gulf War and its health effects on United States and European war veterans. However, studies on the impact of this radioactive substance on the residents of the surrounding Gulf region are far from adequate. Depleted uranium introduces large quantities of radioactive material that is hazardous to biological organisms, continues to decay for millennia and is able to travel tens of kilometres in air. If depleted uranium were used in the Gulf War, its impact on the health of people in the area would have been considerable. This review of depleted uranium-its origin, properties, uses and effects on the human environment and health-aims to trigger further research on this subject

Ядерная энергетика: переработка и удаление высокорадиоактивных отходов: отчет о совещании ВОЗ, Брюгге, 2–6 июня 1980 г.

Европейское региональное бюро ВОЗ при поддержке правительства Бельгии провело 2–6 июня 1980 г. совещание Рабочей группы по медико-санитарным аспектам захоронения высокорадиоактивных отходов. Это было третье совещание из серии проводимых в Бельгии встреч по медико-санитарным аспектам ядерной энергетики. Цель указанных совещаний состояла в том, чтобы удовлетворить потребность органов здравоохранения й охраны окружающей среды европейских стран в необходимой как им самим, так и населению информации о последствиях для здоровья людей новых разработок в области мирного использования ядерной энергии. Безопасное захоронение высокорадиоактивных отходов привлекает пристальное внимание как государственных органов, так и населения. В настоящей книге представлена значительная часть необходимой информации об этом жизненно важном аспекте ядерной энергетики. Она будет особенно интересна тем странам, которые сейчас.развивают ядерную технологию и промышленность.

Energie nucléaire : la gestion des déchets de haute activité : rapport sur une réunion de l’OMS, Bruges, 2–6 juin 1980

Le Bureau régional de l’OMS pour l’Europe a réuni du 2 au 6 juin 1980, en collaboration avec le Gouvernement belge, un groupe de travail sur les incidences de l'évacuation des déchets de haute activité sur la santé. Il s’agissait là de la troisième d’une série de réunions tenues en Belgique et consacrées aux conséquences pour la santé de la production d’énergie électro-nucléaire. Ces réunions répondaient à un besoin : tenir informés les responsables de la santé et de la protection de l’environnement, ainsi que le grand public, dans les pays européens, des conséquences que peuvent avoir pour la santé les nouvelles utilisations pacifiques de l’énergie nucléaire. La sécurité de l’élimination des déchets radioactifs de forte activité est un problème qui, depuis longtemps, préoccupe beaucoup les autorités autant que le public. Le présent ouvrage donne des informations très précieuses sur cet aspect primordial de l’industrie de l’énergie nucléaire, et sera d'un intérêt particulier pour les pays qui commencent à se doter d’une technologie et d’une industrie nucléaires.

Nuclear power: management of high-level radioactive waste: report on a Working Group, Bruges, 2–6 June 1980

The WHO Regional Office for Europe, in collaboration with the Government of Belgium, convened a Working Group on Health Implications of High-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal in June 1980. This was the third in a series of meetings arranged in Belgium on the health aspects of nuclear power production. The purpose of these meetings was to respond to the need for national health and environmental authorities in European countries to keep themselves and the general public well informed of the consequences for health of new developments in the peaceful uses of nuclear power. The safe disposal of high-level radioactive waste is a topic that has caused great concern to governments and the public alike. This report provides much needed information on this vital aspect of the nuclear power industry and will be of particular interest in those countries that are now developing their nuclear technology and industry.

Énergie nucléaire et santé : rapport sur la réunion d’un groupe de travail, Bruxelles, 1er – 5 décembre 1975

Le Bureau régional de l’OMS pour l’Europe a réuni à Bruxelles, du 1 er au 5 décembre 1975, un groupe de travail pour étudier, débattre et évaluer les effets produits par l’industrie nucléaire sur les gens et l’environnement. Cette réunion se justifiait, pour une part, du fait des préoccupations que cause au grand public la sécurité de la production d’énergie nucléaire. Le présent rapport, qui repose sur les connaissances et l’expérience collectives des membres du groupe de travail, ainsi que sur la documentation existante, apporte certaines indications destinées aux autorités de santé publique. La réunion a groupé 19 conseillers temporaires venus de 12 pays européens et des Etats-Unis. Six grandes disciplines ainsi que cinq catégories professionnelles y étaient représentées, ce qui assurait dans le débat une approche multidisciplinaire. A la réunion assistaient aussi des représentants de cinq organisations internationales, gouvernementales ou non gouvernementales. Le groupe de travail a dressé le bilan des constatations faites à l’occasion de la construction et de l’exploitation de centrales nucléaires et évalué les risques qu’elles présenteraient pour la santé. Il a également étudié les estimations des risques associés à la production d’énergie électrique à partir d’autres combustibles. Le groupe de travail s’est penché aussi sur le problème de l’ampleur des risques courus par la population en général et par les travailleurs de l’industrie nucléaire. Les conclusions et les recommandations du groupe de travail figurent dans la partie 1 du rapport. Le programme de la réunion, la liste des documents de travail et la liste des participants constituent respectivement les Annexes Il, III et IV.

Health implications of nuclear power production: report on a Working Group, Brussels, 1–5 December 1975

The WHO Regional Office for Europe convened a Working Group meeting in Brussels in 1975 to study, discuss and appraise the effects of nuclear power industry on people and the environment. One of the reasons for the meeting was the concern of the general public about the safety of nuclear power generation. This report, which is based on the collective knowledge and experience of the members of the Working Group, as well as on the available literature, provides some guidelines for public health authorities. The meeting was attended by 19 temporary advisers from 12 European countries and from the USA. Six major disciplines and five professional categories were represented, thus ensuring a multidisciplinary approach to the discussions. Representatives from five international governmental and nongovernmental organizations were also present. The Working Group reviewed the experience gained from building and operating nuclear facilities, and made estimates of the attendant health risks. They also considered estimates of the risks associated with the generation of electrical power from other types of fuel. They discussed the magnitude of these risks to the general population and to workers in the nuclear power industry. The conclusions and recommendations of the Working Group are given in section 1 of the report. The programme of the meeting, a list of working documents and a list of participants are given in Annexes II, III and IV.
